White People Are Racister Than Thought [Dan Collins]

One reason racism persists is that many people imagine they would respond strongly to a racist act but actually respond with indifference, a new study led by York University shows.

The research examines why acts of blatant racism against blacks still occur with alarming regularity, even though being labeled as a racist in modern society has become a powerful stigma.

“People do not think of themselves as prejudiced, and they predict that they would be very upset by a racist act and would take action,” said lead author Kerry Kawakami, a psychology professor in York’s Faculty of Health. “However, we found that their responses are much more muted than they expect when they are actually faced with an overtly racist comment.”

No word on what happens when the roles are reversed; wouldn’t be prudent.

  1. CFB says:

I used to teach high school English in Miami. The two most racist comments ever said in my presence happened during that time, both of them — I’m sad to say — were perpetrated by black boys/men.

The first racist comment occurred when I was teasing one of my students, a light-skinned young black who was born in the British Virgin Islands. He fancied himself something of a rapper. One day in my calssroom, overhearing a negative comment he made about the rapper Bobby Brown, I said, “You’re just jealous because Bobby Brown is right out of high school and is such a success.” My student responded, “I could never be jealous of Bobby Brown because he’s darker than I am.”

The second racist comment occurred one day when I complimented another young man in my 10th grade class on how nice he looked in his red shirt. His response was, “My momma doesn’t like me to wear red. She says it makes me look too dark.”

White people are not hung up on the various shades of black of the negroid race. Black people, however, manifestly are.

  2. I have to deal with rude teenagers on a regular basis. The other day, one of them called me the N-word. I suppressed an urge to say that there was only one of those here, and it wasn’t me.

  3. dicentra says:

Those who actually experienced the event were less distressed and were as willing to work with the person who made racist comments as someone who did not.

Dovidio argues that participants who witness racism were much less willing to pay the emotional cost of confronting a racist than they thought they would be. That in turn means the racist pays less of a cost in social ostracism by expressing bias, he said.

Well, yeah. If you’re dealing with a real-live bigot, better not mix it up with him or who knows if he’ll shiv ya right there in front of God and everyone.

It is interesting that they test this for racism but not for, say, class snobbery. Or other slights of equal weight.

CFB: I saw this same thing in Colombia. I had thought that because all the races were more or less interbred, the binary black/white thing we have going in the U.S. wouldn’t be around, because how are you going to be prejudiced against Africans if you’re grampa was one?

I was right: They went by degree of darkness, unless you were pure Indian, in which case you were at the very bottom of the totem pole. Being white, I was sometimes deferred to by those who saw me as socially superior. Creeped me out but good.

It’s true what they say: If we woke up tomorrow morning to find that all our current differences had been erased, we’d find nine more ways to divide ourselves up before breakfast.

The Koreans in South Central were unavailable for comment.

  5. Sticky B says:

I play card with two brothers who are black. Which I guess makes them brothers on two levels, but I digress. They constantly call each other and all of the rest of us the N-word. We actually kinda had a lot fun with it. Until we all went out to Vegas one year and they both sat down at a black jack table with a black woman as the dealer and started in on our regular schtick. She wasn’t amused. Had us all removed by security even though the two black men were the only ones who used the slur. Guilt by association I guess.

  6. panther girl says:

My dad lives in a small town down south. Very overtly racist attitudes. Throwing the N-word around and meaning it. My dad, who has always been quite prejudiced as well, did some work in Nigeria for months at a time on several occasions. One time, he brought back a Nigerian bride who was much darker than any of the locals (although, it must be said, a good 25 years his junior). The reaction was interesting. His brother quit speaking to him. But most of the other folks had no problem with his marriage – even though she’s darker (which is definitely “bad” in their eyes). He even managed to avoid a tussle with some good ol’ boys who stopped them in the truck together. Turns out that since she’s Nigerian instead of American, its okay that she’s black. Glad I don’t live in that culture b/c I don’t have the patience to figure it out. (That, and all the men would look at me funny when I’d say something; guess I was speaking out of turn.)

  7. I’ve found, by dating several African-American women, that skin tone is VERY important. Which confused me a little, since my preference was for darker skinned women, that they were looked down on by their families. The level of, for want of a better word, racism, was mind-blowing…

  8. Bob Reed says:

In the study, students who think they are waiting for an experiment to begin are exposed to racism…The first group watched a black man, posing as a fellow participant, slightly bump a white confederate also posing as a participant…

Now I’m not going to say that no racism was revealed in the study, but I do have some questions about the charade…

What kind of experiment were they allegedly waiting to do? If it was something delicate, then maybe some people chose to work the racist, regardless, rather than the “bumper” who had demonstrated what could be percieved as reckless or clumsy behavior; that may effect the success of their mutual task, or force them to take more of the responsibility on…

Or perhaps there are some elements of peoples desire not to have their personal space invaded, as the “bumper” had demonstrated a willingness to do. Although the racist was possibly vile about his prejudice, he wasn’t touching them…

    Not excusin’, just speculatin’…

“…the racist pays less of a cost in social ostracism by expressing bias…”

You mean like Messers. Farrakhan or Wright? I’m with Dan on this; we wouldn’t even consider the experiment with a reversal of racial roles…

But, this is more of the multi-cultural mindset of identity politics at work. One must already take most sociological studies involving race, done by academics, with a large helping of salt. But those done in the multi-culti UK..?

As they say in Brooklyn; fuhgeddabowdit!

  9. I am sick to death of the whining about racism. I have never seen anything, not even during the race riots of the sixties, that is anywhere near as bad as the antisemitism on display around this country right now. It is sickening. The pictures at Atlas Shrugs break my heart. So much hatred and viciousness on display.

Most of what people call racism nowadays is just crudeness rather than racism. Being lewd and crude is the in thing these days, so I’m told by the younger generation around me.

  10. Angie says:

No word on what happens when the roles are reversed Thank you! I’m just glad I’m not the only one with this thought. The Bay Area is rampant with race issues right now over what looks like a horrible accident. Just seems as tho some want to find a reason to claim it’s a race issue over looking at the facts.

  11. There are two protected groups in this country today, blacks and gays. You are forced to like every one of them, whether they are total jerks or outstanding people. I meet lots of white people I would never invite into my home or socialize with just because I don’t hit it off with them, we have nothing in common, or because they are total a@@holes, but you aren’t allowed that choice if a gay or black is involved. And, in my own experience, the intolerance/bigotry comes at me not from me and I don’t see why I should make the extra effort if the other side isn’t interested. For instance, if you think Barack Obama is a total putz, it cannot be because he is a total putz and empty suit, no, you are a racist.

When I was the guardian of a young black teenager, I overheard a friend of his say he should get out of our house because I was such a racist. The young man asked why? I was shocked when I heard that I was a racist because I didn’t allow gangsta rap in the house and I made him speak “white man’s English” rather than jive talk. To my Ward’s credit, he told his friend that because of my constant attention (nagging) he was getting straight As in school and had 3 letters of intent from 3 very good universities and that he had no intention of being a loser like him.

  12. B Moe says:

….even though being labeled as a racist in modern society has become a powerful stigma.

It used to carry a powerful stigma, now it is routine.

  13. MAJ (P) John says:

#12 – True, the “labeled” part has been worn out by over-use in situations where it is not warranted. As Jeff (is he ever going to return here?!)has often pointed out – words can be corrupted away from original meaning. A pity that the same label is flung at someone who disagrees with a policy decision the same as a group like the Aryan Nation.

  14. BJTexs says:

Leave to some media outlet to find the results of an obscure, contrived study from a backwater University (in BC fer cryin’ out loud) and generate traffic by using the narrowly defined results to proclaim TEH RACISM STILL EXISTS!!!

  15. Cowboy says:

It’s true what they say: If we woke up tomorrow morning to find that all our current differences had been erased, we’d find nine more ways to divide ourselves up before breakfast.

So true, dicentra. I was raised in Montana and until my family moved to Indiana, had never experienced racism against blacks or anti-semitism…not because there were no racists in Montana, but because there were no African-Americans or Jews!

Of course, the racism against the local Blackfoot Indians was palpable. Also, though I had never heard a “Polish” joke until I moved to the midwest, I was raised on a steady diet of jokes about South Dakotans.

    Really.

  16. Mr. Pink says:

This probably makes it pretty hard to watch Kings of Comedy.

  17. Alec Leamas says:

The event was probably one of those stealth things that most people don’t know is racist. At this point, I think it would be a lot easier if they just gave us a list of things that aren’t racist – that being shorter than the list of things that are.

  18. JHoward says:

Kawakami led the study at York with graduate student Francine Karmali. University of British Columbia professor Elizabeth Dunn, an expert on people’s ability to predict their future emotional responses, and Yale University professor John Dovidio, an expert on prejudice, are co-authors.

MAj, what’s the story of race in the armed forces? Does army green, or Marine Red and Gold, trump skin color?

  20. Rob Crawford says:

John Dovidio, an expert on prejudice

Well, there’s your problem. Dovidio should try to be less prejudiced!

  21. Rob Crawford says:

Actually, JHoward, it sounds to me like they found exactly the results they were looking for. The “expert on people’s ability to predict their future emotional responses” found that (other) people are so good at predicting their future emotional responses, and the “expert on prejudice” found prejudice.

  23. Mr. Pink says:

Nothing trumps being a freakin moron. I have met racists of both black and white persuasion in the military. When you actually meet a real racist, not just someone that is not PC, but someone who actually will say “I hate all white people” or vice versa, it is pretty disgusting. Ignorant as hell too. The term is being defined down to just making insensitive comments now.

  24. Mr. Pink says:

I had one of my old sergeants take me around and point out racists to me. I didn’t believe him when he said this other sergeant was a racist. He told me to just go up to him during detail and slip in a comment or say something to give him an opening to say something racist. Within 10 seconds the guy starts ranting how they are good for nothing but moving lawn furniture. It made me physically ill listening to it.
The other side of the coin we had some perennial E4 guy with a huge chip on his shoulder from Alabama who literally hated all white people. He would tell you. I had to live with the guy too. Fun stuff.

  25. bigbooner says:

Not sure this study takes into account the “I don’t want to get involved or I shouldn’t judge other people” thing. Just watch any group dynamic where someone is doing something somewhat irregular. People will just ignore it. Don’t want no part of it. Later on they might say something but most people just go about their business. Then they play the “this is what I shoulda said” game.

  26. TheGeezer says:

Since hoomins are depraved as a result of deprivation (we’re talking Grace here, not socioeconomic status), is it any wonder that racism seems perpetual, universal, ubiquitous, contradictory, and hateful? The wired thing is, why is lighter-colored better, most of the time? Would being clear be the best of all? Yuck…you’d see all those guts…

  27. TheGeezer says:

    wired = wierd.

Although we may be wired that way, being depraved and all…

  28. Alec Leamas says:

“Since hoomins are depraved as a result of deprivation (we’re talking Grace here, not socioeconomic status), is it any wonder that racism seems perpetual, universal, ubiquitous, contradictory, and hateful?”

Perhaps, but racism isn’t racism anymore. If you’re white, simply wanting to be left alone qualifies as racism. Lefties think that they have a mandate to bother people in the interests of what they perceive to be justice – “teachable moments” and such.

  29. Mr. Pink says:

Well if 97% of white people voted for the white guy in the election I am sure the howls of “Teh Racist!!!!!” would be heard around the world.

  30. Pablo says:

Well if 97% of white people voted for the white guy in the election I am sure the howls of “Teh Racist!!!!!” would be heard around the world.

They did that last time, because of the racism. Also, approximately half of all Democrats are sexist.

  31. Andrew the Noisy says:

First time I ever experience racism was in elementary school. Two black kids were harassing this Polish kid (as in, he was from Poland and had escaped from behind the Iron Curtain with his family) from my neighborhood, poking at him and kicking his backpack and promising to “kick his little white tail”. They did this surrounded by at least 7-10 other white kids, including me, who did absolutely nothing.

A week before, I had seen these same two young gents sticking their heads out the window of our bus, shouting “Bigots!” I didn’t even know what a bigot was.

Since then, I’ve found the allure of race grievance industry quite easy to resist.

  32. Curmudgeon says:

Is it worse than the anti-semitism displayed around the country during hte sixties? Like, say, by the terrorists that killed jewish civil rights workers in the south?

  38. Log Cabin says:

I must quibble with the term, “racist act” used in the story. To me, a “racist act” is when you don’t hire, sell to, rent to, etc. a person due to their ethnicity or color. If this occured in my presence, I would scream about it to high heaven. Descrimination is wrong and in most cases, illegal.

But if what they are objecting to is merely “racial slurs” such as use of the “N” word, I am not about to walk around policing every fool that insults, blacks, jews, asians, etc. I just don’t have the time or the inclination. Besides, we supposedly have free speech in this country, whether it’s stupid speech is beside the point.

I really believe the hidden message here is that whites are bad because if don’t call everyone out in public for politically incorrect
    infractions. Good little Obama-bots should!

  39. Curmudgeon says:

Way to illustrate the point, gimp! Did you know the term “clowning” is “racist” too? Now go fellate Raul, since Fidel is not around, unless you are really into political necrophilia too…

I spent a couple years on the Blackfeet Res, and witnessed/experienced overt racism from every conceivable angle.

Local C-store clerk in cut Bank treating the customer ahead of me (visibly Indian)like dirt, while treating me just fine. Strangely enough that white looking clerk could have been an enrolled tribal member for all anybody knew – a lot of members are very mixed and have been for generations – and she still would be hating on the dark skinned people.

A good friend who related to me how he caught serious grief from his mother when he, pure Blackfeet, chose to marry an enrolled member of the Rocky Boys Res. Mom didn’t come around to the arrangement until she saw the first grandchild.

Me, average white boy, having total strangers (Tribal) spit on the ground as I walked past. This was routine, and there were a few no-go spots in town but otherwise non-natives are actually safer on the Res than locals – for whom life can be very very rough.

Hearing conversations among ostensibly highly educated Indians on who was a ‘real’ Indian and who was a wannabe.

A friend (white) with two children, one a fair skinned daughter who had to go to school in Cut Bank because going to school in Browning would have been near suicidal, and a son who was dark haired and dark skinned to the point that pretty much everyone who didn’t actually know him assumed he was indian, even though he was not, and who graduated from Browning HS.

Although, most of the jokes I heard were about North Dakotans. The best summation of my years out west would be that Washingtonians joke about Idahoans, Idahoans joke about Montanans, Montanans joke about North Dakotans, and North Dakotans have no sense of humor.

I’m not sure what these people would have done throughout history in the Jewish ghettos of Europe. Or the Irish ghettos of the new world. Or any other historical ghetto. Not all blacks live in the ghetto and not all ghetto dwellers are black. But it’s simple and if there’s one thing we know, it’s that the reflexive left love simplicity. It’s easy on their brains and satisfies their hearts.

    Cowboy,

I spent some time growing up in Bozeman, MT and I remember the jokes being about North Dakotans and not South Dakotans, but it was a long time ago.

Anyway, I remember my Jr High Earth Sciences Teacher loved ND jokes more than life itself. I was not a getting a good grade in his class and was on the verge of failing but every Semester He had a big project that could make or break your grade. Needless to say I was determined to do well on this project but of course, I procrastinated to the end. Road to hell and all that.

The project was to find 25 different plant seeds tack them on a big piece of poster board and label what kind of plant they were for and a little bit about each plant. I was thinking that is would be easy to find 25 seeds. Not so much. I had 19 and I needed at least 20 to get the grade I needed to pass his class. There I was the night before the damn thing was due, searching our yard for the 20th seed with no luck. I spent the entire evening beating myself up for waiting until the last minute. If I just would have started one day before! The next morning I had this brick of dread in the pit of my stomach and could barely eat my breakfast of Cheerios. It was that breakfast of cheerios that saved me though. I had an epiphany! I quickly grabbed my sad looking poster board, scotch taped a Cheerio on it and I labeled it a “North Dakotan Donut Seed”. It was a hit. I should have only received a C+ for the project but the Teacher loved the ND joke so much he gave me a solid B.

So, you know, prejudices are good for something I guess.

There was a Jewish kid in my neighborhood though and everybody liked him. He had a dog that had lost one of its front legs chasing cars. It was really a good time to watch that dog chase cars with only three legs as it was surprisingly fast. He also had a really big nose and people made fun of him for it but not because he was Jewish. He was a very good basketball player so we always said that he had a nose for the game. We called him “nose guard”. He liked the nick names and he handed out a few himself. He called me “road flare” after an unfortunate fireworks accident. Is it considered racism to make fun of a physical feature that is common among a particular ethnic group? My folks were both from the south so I was very acquainted with what racism was but I did not think of the other kids clowning on his nose as racism and I don’t think he did either. Who gets to make that call?

Taken as a whole, these donations say little more than that the Madoffs were Democrats — though there are a scattering of Republican officials to whom they donated. For figures like Lautenberg, moreover, the loss of cash from his charity foundation far exceeds the relatively minor donations his campaign committee received.

Because of the locker room towel slapping and old boy’s network of really important business conducted at strip clubs.

In the end, “equal pay for equal work” is oppressive. If I’m an employer, and employee “X” is a competent man with five children to support and a wife who stays at home, and employee “Y” is a competent single woman, I’m a sexist and soon-to-be Defendant if I pay “X” more in light of his family obligations. But what is the outcome of “out group” racism? Nothing! What are black Americans going to deny white people of? Rap video appearances? Spinning rims? They don’t have nearly the power of white America, so there’s no punch to it – unless you invoke that unstated premise, then all racism seems tantamount, which is absurd on it’s face.

We also need to re-think racism as an implicit reaction we carry, and not cross burning hatred. Telling white people they’re “racists” is not the answer, and in most cases is innaccurate. No, just infinitely better than trying to run a business by bureaucratic ukase.

    Infinitely.

  171. N. O'Brain says:

    Case in point, via Ace:

” This just in — bureaucrats make for awful businessmen. California state pension money was invested largely in real estate, at the peak of the market.

    Brilliant.

Oh, and the result is perfectly predictable: Increase taxes on employers.”

  175. Eric says:

Meh. I guess I’m one of those people who doesn’t care that much about racism. Yeah, it exists, but so what? There are plenty of opportunities available to people of all races in the US, and racism is used as an excuse for failure far more often than it’s an actual reason for failure.

All this PC nonsense is far more corrosive to society than racism ever was.

  176. JPS says:

“However, we found that their responses are much more muted than they expect when they are actually faced with an overtly racist comment.”

Not too long ago, I found myself sitting in a group, having lunch, while some pretty nasty ethnic slurs were made. No one present knew that those slurs applied to me. I’d grown up in a part of the country where such sentiments are nearly unheard-of, and so was naively surprised to find that yes, some people really do still think like this.

I let it pass. Part of me was disappointed in myself: Should have taken a stand, should have brought the guy up short. But I didn’t keep quiet out of fear. I knew I could say what was on my mind. The speaker would certainly have been embarrassed, the others would’ve felt bad for laughing or nodding along.

I just didn’t feel like getting into it. There are jerks out there, and this guy was still going to be one after I shamed him into shutting up. Not worth the bother, sometimes.

  177. assclown says:

Alright, shut up thor and parsnip. I want to read more deep thoughts from the lily white pw.com commentors on the nature of race. Specifically, I need MORE examples of other races being racists/assholes and a cute explanation of why this means it’s ok for white people to be racist. Precious. And quite revealing how proudly ignorant they are. Please continue, kids.

  185. well, we all know what that’s code for, Dan.

Considering all of the anti-discrimination legislation at the federal and state level, and the federal and state boards, and the easy access to the courts in the United States, it would be very strange to find any governmental or corporate body that will wink and smile at any display of proscribed discrimination, including racism.

At the personal level, outside of work or government? That can exist, and will exist; just ignore/avoid those fools as you would any other lamprous troll. I mean, there can’t be a law against stupidity or else Congress would be incacerated.

And, why do Farrakhan and Wright get a pass on make vile racial and ethnic slurs and references when no whites would? And why can Bobby Rush, Burris, and Obama play the race card, even pre-emptively and be successful, but to even disagree with their sentiment would make me a RAAAAAAAACIST!

Please start by addressing these examples…Believe me, I can provide maaaaaany examples of reverse racism if you’d like; but I’m the kind of guy who let’s those kind of things roll off my back…

That is, you don’t know what the Hell you’re talking about, get defensive when anybody suggests you should, and spend your days making criticisms that fall wide of the mark because you don’t have the least inkling of what they’re about.

The “Magic Negro” phrase was invented by that well-known, lily-white, gay-hating NASCAR fan, David Ehrenstein of the LA Times. To my knowledge he used it first in the comments to Cathy Seipp’s blog when that lovely lady was still with us, and he was specifically using it to criticize the attitude you exhibit.

I don’t listen to Rush; that is the sort of clever coinage he’d pick up on, but he, and I, understand what it means and how its originator used it, which you clearly do not.

Yeah, the term in common usage today is “nigger”, or the “nigga” variant. You should always use the term that the possibly offended group uses, as their use denotes what terms are acceptable. You will not hear a young black man greeting his friends with “What’s up, my negroes?”

    United Negro College Fund.

Hah! I said it! I’m such a bad man!

  257. alppuccino says:

    United Negro College Fund.

Now can that really help with the advancement of colored people?

  258. assclown says:

I said it before and I’ll say it again – if you are so right, use those words as much as you can. In public. Quit your pathetic mewling about how darn unfair it is you can’t use any word you’d like. Make a stand! Call your black coworker a “colored” or “negro” but carefully explain to them you reject their implied meanings. Show them this blog if you must. I know Jeff has written extensively on this angle. Hearts and minds, people!

  271. Mikey NTH says:

    So many comments here.

The study proves the obvious, that humans divide themselves up into ‘family’, ‘clan’, and ‘tribe’; and when it gets to the point that they do not know another person they use things such as coloration, complexion, grooming style, clothing, speech patterns, etc., to find people who are like them and favor those people over others.

Now that the frickin’ obvious has been noted by another study, can we just get back to encouraging people to keep their nasty opinions to themselves and treat one another in a civil manner?

  272. Mikey NTH says:

And ‘treat them in a civil manner’ should have an added part: until they prove themselves not deserving that treatment.

  273. B Moe says:
