Music Calms the Savage Breast [Dan Collins]

Picture yourself beside a glassy calm bahia on Mexico’s Pacific coast at sunset, with your favorite companion, having a nice margarita as the seabirds wheel in the distance. You are tanned, sated, happy, relaxed. You feel the still-warm sand between your toes as as the gentlest of breezes stirs your hair softly. You still have many such days ahead of you, and you plan to return to your nicely appointed quarters and shower before a delicious dinner of fresh seafood. Maybe you’ll go out dancing, or just sit out on the balcony and watch people stroll by.

You feel calm. Complete. Take a deep, cleansing breath.

And then slag each other over which music you prefer.

    QOTSA, of course.

  2. Rob Crawford says:

with your favorite companion… before a delicious dinner of fresh seafood

Nope. She’s deathly allergic to seafood.

  3. Carin says:

    Dan/anyone: have you seen this:

Let’s fight a larger battle, namely to have government catch up to human behavior. That means recognizing the legitimacy of a wide range of consensual, non-exploitative romantic partnerships, each of which should probably have its own distinct label.

In the U.S., the highest priority should be to give official recognition to cohabitation, which is, in effect, renewable short-term marriage. Married households are now in the minority in the U.S., and cohabitation is increasing, especially among the elderly. Cohabitors are wary of lifetime commitments (in part, perhaps, because such commitments so often prove to be illusory in our culture), but many would probably like the option of getting the same rights and benefits during their cohabitation that married people have.

See, Gay marriage doesn’t go far enough.

  4. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, and I commented on it over there.

  5. Dan Collins says:

I hope there will be at least a cash bar at all the Fuckbuddy ceremonies.

  6. happyfeet says:

rap is just so unbearably common I think. But anyhoo where’s JD? I don’t think he’s checked in lately and we should know he is good and getting better I think. Maybe I’ve just missed him?

  7. happyfeet says:

I haven’t caught up with my nishi tunes from yesterday but I can’t get through my day without this one. I am a lot the musical inverse of Carin I think. I like lyrics. Happy ones mostly. Not lightning crashes a new mother cries her placenta falls to the floor ones.

  8. cranky-d says:

What is it about some people that need the government to legitimize their behavior? Can’t they just do their thing and expect to be left alone?

Yeah, I know, another stupid question. The answer is obviously no. Since the government has become their parent, they cry for approval from said parent.

  9. Carin says:

Well, now I like lyrics too. Tool is awesome for the lyrical shit. And, as we mentioned yesterday, The Hip has lyrics that are very poetic. Metallica? QOTSA? Guitar driven, of course, but Josh Homme has a voice that makes me …

    I’ll be in my bunk.

  10. Carin says:

Of course, I don’t think any of the Tool songs could be described as “Happy” songs …

  11. BJTexs says:

HF: I heard from JD a few days ago. He’s been on the road for his new job, a wonderful job that has him giddy as a Japanese schoolgirl. He was headed up to a famous football player’s high school where he was to meet the famous football player, which made him even giddier. He’s recovering nicely from the bladder and bile fiasco and giggles a lot on the phone which, I admit, is very disconcerting.

All in all old JD is doing just fine.

Carin: Or “Korn” songs for that matter. Some of the most depressing songs ever written.

  12. Carin says:

    Or Radiohead.

Now, QOTSA? Most of their songs are about sex …

  13. happyfeet says:

Yay!. Ok mostly I have bad new job jealousy. I looked on one industry job board yesterday and there were 3 whole listing for LA, none of them interesting. There are other boards but that’s not a good sign I don’t think. Stupid industry. I need to plan on staying put probably through 09 I think but I need to redo my 09 goals. One must have goals.

  14. Jeffersonian says:

I’ve been listening to a lot of Bach, Mozart, Puccini and such lately. Have I fallen behind?

  15. BJTexs says:

Then there’s Rage Against the Machine, the perfect combination of driving, catchy music with insufferably overbearing lefty activist lyrics. My understanding is that they broke up because the rest of the band had finally had enough of the lead singer’s pontifications.

I mean, any multimillion dollar rock singer who writes lyrics like “Mumia, my brother!” should be baked in to the world’s largest coconut pie and topped with a sizable dollop from the whoop ass can.

  16. happyfeet says:

oh. *listings* I meant. I’ll try the old networking thing first though but lots of peoples I know are a little concerned about their own future and my dead end job has about as much securitah as you could hope for, so I think it would be ungracious not to appreciate that for the nonce. Ha. I said nonce. How cool am I?

  17. BJTexs says:

Jeffersonian #14: No, not at all. Just stand up every now and then and clear the cobwebs.:-)

  18. ginsocal says:

I rarely listen to music that has words anymore. Pink Floyd and Chritmas music are the only exceptions.

  19. Jeffersonian says:

I’ll put on some Ramones or Stevie Ray Vaughn for that, BJ.

  20. TheUnrepentantGeek says:

I am a musical goat and have no taste. Actually I do – it’s just juvenile taste. With that said:

I likes me some metal. Anything hard rock, angry, and guitar driven. Also some electronica. Perhaps a dash of classic rock. Sprinkle liberally with some Industrial add an ironic taste for Dragonforce and bake at 375 for one hour.

I think that went off the rails at some point.

  21. Obstreperous Infidel says:

    Hip Hop-D12/Swifty McVay/Eminem, NWA
Classic Rock-Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Neil Young
Easy Listening-Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin
Industrial-VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, Velvet Acid Christ
    Folk-Damien Rice
Alternative/Punk-The Pogues, Black Flag, The Misfits
    Metal/Hard Rock-Type O Negative, Metallica, Iron Maiden

  22. BJTexs says:

Folk, O.I. What no Nick Drake?

BTW: Have you seen the 30th anniversary show that Rush gave in Germany? The lyrics are still muddled hippy crap and Geddy Lee in the upper ranges of his voice still sounds like a herd of cats being fed into a furnace but man, oh man, those guys have lost nothing as musicians.

  23. Benedick says:

    Definitely Barney’s Greatest Hits.

  24. B Moe says:

I have been listening to some old Charlie Pickett and the Eggs stuff lately. Americana back when we just called it rock and roll.

  25. Slartibartfast says:

Sprinkle liberally with some Industrial add an ironic taste for Dragonforce and bake at 375 for one hour.

    Result: one loaf of Bread.

  26. Obstreperous Infidel says:

No, BJ. I haven’t seen it. Yeah, Geddy’s voice has been faltering for years, now. But the music is still the music. And they are still very tight. It’s funny. I’ve always loved their lyrics, though.

  27. Sdferr says:

Jeffersonian, give these a try and see what you think. Bartok, Romanian Folk Dances (Sz 57)

  28. Sticky B says:

Gary Moore. Blues guitar that speaks to my soul. Especially the live shit. Blues probably should never be recorded in a studio.

  29. BumperStickerist says:

  30. BJTexs says:

    Slart: High-Larious!

    O.I. Yes, indeed, still tight.

  31. Jeffersonian says:

Excellent, Sdferr! Thanks for that, and not too hard on the glassies, either.

  32. Pellegri says:

Unrepentant Geek and I have a lot in common, it appears. I’m especially hooked on Assemblage 23, but that’s mostly because the guy who pretty much is the band is frigging awesome.

Although I’ve had a hankering lately for … oh, what’s her name. Sang Planets of the Universe, Rhiannon… Good stuff. I’ll need to check my music stores on my external HD.

  33. Pellegri says:

Ooo, oo, also I was raised with a lot of Paul Simon and Little River Band, those are hawt.

  34. Sdferr says:

Jeffersonian, here’s another (even better to my mind) I couldn’t find anywhere else as a freebee, so it is a bit of trouble for you to go to. but worth it, I’ll guarantee. So, click to this page (at Rhapsody), scroll down to number 518: Three Hungarian Folksongs from the Csik District (Live) and click the black arrow on the far left to give it a listen. Very short, but shortest of all, and most thrilling to my taste is the last piece, maybe 37 secs. of pure joy (and an absolute devil to play).

  35. happyfeet says:

Daryl Hall is very cool I think. Is he still alive?

  36. Slartibartfast says:

Alex Lifeson is I think underrated as a guitar player. Not the best, but certainly WAY beyond “workmanlike”.

This is probably my favorite Rush instrumental (double bonus: no herd of cats). There are other versions on Youtube; this may not be the best. Awesomely tasty drumming by Peart, as well as great guitar by Lifeson.

  37. God says:

‘Daryl Hall is very cool I think. Is he still alive?’

He’s not only alive, but still corn-holing Oates.

I’m not surprised none of you mention Clapton. Genius improves with age, but the shock of recognition, as a nerve pathway, doesn’t exist for trollops whose taste is found only in their mouths.

  38. happyfeet says:

See I never knew for real if they were super special friends or not. Has VH-1 done any Behind the Rock or whatever with these two?

  39. cranky-d says:

You can change your name, trolls, but your personality eventually shines through.

  40. Rasputin says:

    “your personality eventually shines through.”

Sorry. It just seemed there wasn’t enuff ‘slagging’ going on.

  41. Curmudgeon says:

Then there’s Rage Against the Machine, the perfect combination of driving, catchy music with insufferably overbearing lefty activist lyrics. My understanding is that they broke up because the rest of the band had finally had enough of the lead singer’s pontifications.

I mean, any multimillion dollar rock singer who writes lyrics like “Mumia, my brother!” should be baked in to the world’s largest coconut pie and topped with a sizable dollop from the whoop ass can.

They were definitely the Dead Kennedys of the 1990’s, right down to the obnoxious asshole lead, who alienated the rest of his band. Although Tom Morello is no better.

  42. Curmudgeon says:

Yeah, Geddy’s voice has been faltering for years, now.

I think he needs to rework his live songs in a way that works with his aging voice. Just like Robert Plant did.

  43. dicentra says:

This year and last I’ve decided to collect good versions of the Wexford Carol and the Sussex carol, then I put them in their own iTunes playlist, and then I play them on infinite repeat.

I can actually endure stuff like that. Don’t hold it against me, plzkthx.

  44. dicentra says:

Sorry. It just seemed there wasn’t enuff ’slagging’ going on.

What? This isn’t AoSHQ, ya know.

  45. Carin says:

Dicentra – Yo-Yo Ma put out a Christmas album with a nice version of the Wexford Carol. I’m all about Christmas music. I just pulled a pity-party for myself (turned 41 today) and went out and bought it.

But I don’t think anything beats the Cheiftan’s version. Theirs is the ultimate Christmas album.

  46. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

And Tommy doesn’t know what day it is…

  47. Salt Lick says:

Sorry, hf, but the Kim and Matt video was disturbing because Kim’s little titties reminded me my wife said her newly transexualized co-worker might ask me to dance with her at their Winter Season office party because he/she has begun feeling pretty good about his/herself. My wife has been very supportive of said person and so said person might hit on me to help him/her in his/her dancing debute.

Fuck. What the fuck is happening here?

  48. dicentra says:

    Carin:

I gots “O the Holly She Bears a Berry” and “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by the Chieftains. Good stuff. I’ll check out their Wexford.

I listened to a slice of the Yo-Yo Ma version of Wexford and it wasn’t bad.

But Dourdan has the best instrumental version, IMAO. I’ve also got Anúna, MoTabs, and Nightnoise.

For Sussex, I’ve got Nightnoise again, MoTabs again (with the King’s Singers), and some Windham Hill dewds.

I really like the old, half-forgotten European carols. Especially when Mack Wilberg arranges them for the MoTabs and they blow your soul halfway into the sky.

  49. dicentra says:

And kudos to Dan for saying “breast” instead of “beast.” It’s actually the correct version, not a sign of Dan’s perverted mind.

  50. lee says:

I love rock, jazz, and blues. I’m not sure rap even qualifies as music, like listening to a beat poet you ask me. Most of it really bad poetry.

OK, you want to commence with the slag? I really like No Doubt.

    Have at me.

  51. mojo says:

Can you say “breast” on the innernet anymore now that the Messiah has come?

In a non-cooking context, I mean, of course. Back off, Emeril…

  52. Semanticleo says:

    BNoe;

    YOU have taste………

  53. SDN says:

#20, how about “hard rock, angry, and bagpipe driven.” I recently came across a band called Off-Kilter which has done some interesting music that way.

  54. happyfeet says:

hah. Salt Lick – my little brother’s next reunion will feature a guy what used to be a girl and a girl what used to be a guy. It’s really the darndest thing but you play along as best you can I think and set a tone of respect and you really distinguish yourself as he who is of good character. I know it’s wrong to use them like that but it’s low-hanging fruit so to speak.

  55. Sticky B says:

    Which begs the question:
If you had to choose one, and there was no backing out, I mean seriously, you fucking had to, you know…..pistol to the head and the whole nine yards. Would you fuck the guy who used to be a girl or the girl who used to be a guy?

  56. Dan Collins says:

At that point, Sticky, I guess it might be a question of which of them might enjoy it more.

  57. B Moe says:

Which one is hottest, and how fucked up am I?

  58. McGehee says:

Sticky, what caliber is the gun?

  59. happyfeet says:

oh. That’s a conundrum. I would go with whoever had the better teeth I think. Always a good rule of thumb.

  60. McGehee says:

I’d probably have to consider the question more seriously if it’s a small-caliber gun that might leave me alive but a vegetable. I could pick one of those transy types to do, and then go home and blow my own brains out the right way.

    But if we’re talking, like, a .44 Magnum…

  61. Bob Reed says:

    Carin,
Happy Birthday, and many happy returns! May you have mnore in front of you than you have already put behind…

On the subject of music, as a former player, I really like it all-except rap, I find it to be completely vile; the same is true for the allegedly romantic analogue to hip-hop–woo-woo music…

But I think if we were on the west coast of Mexico, and listening to live music..?

Entonces, nosotros eschuchamos Los Vocalistas canto di musica folklorica, tal como “Guadalajara; asimismo los Mariachis…

Sorry, I know here in America we speak English! But, I mean, after all we are imagining being in Mexico-right?

  62. Daniel Dare says:

I like heaps of different kinds of music; but I’ve always had a special soft spot for Joaquín Rodrigo’s, Concierto de Aranjuez, 2nd Movement, here played by John Williams.

  63. Daniel Dare says:

And if I’m going to mention John Williams, I suppose I have to include his Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. Because he’s not bad at strumming the old guitar our Johnny.

  64. J. "Trashman" Peden says:

I like all music. If I like a song I like it, even Barbra Striesand! Promises, The Love Inside – on some Album with Barry Gibb. Anything, but need guidance badly.

“Music makes me walk right”. But I’m mostly about 30yrs. behind and even moving backward. [More currently, Matchbox Twenty was my latest “discovery”.]

  65. flicka47 says:

Ah,yes. The song for all us lurkers out there…

Waiting in the Weeds – The Eagles

  66. Daniel Dare says:

I always assume that the stuff linked on you-tube is legal, because, especially if it’s been up for a while, then youtube would have taken it down by now if it wasn’t.

A lot of record people use you-tube to promote stuff, hoping you’ll like some low-quality clip and go and buy the video or cd. Which I’ve often done myself in the past, seen something on you tube, liked it and then bought the cd/dvd

If anyone knows it’s not legal, please feel free to break the links I’ve made above.
