Hell, I’m just going to repost this here, because I think it deserves more commentary:
Many American Atheists Are Unhappy Douchebags
because they are victims of the religious:
American atheists, by contrast, are often left out of community life. The studies that Brooks cites in Gross National Happiness, which find that the religious are happier and more generous then the secular, do not define religious and secular in terms of belief. They define it in terms of religious attendance. It is not hard to see how being left out of one of the dominant modes of American togetherness can have a corrosive effect on morality. As P.Z. Myers, the biologist and prominent atheist, puts it, “[S]cattered individuals who are excluded from communities do not receive the benefits of community, nor do they feel willing to contribute to the communities that exclude them.â€Â
The sorry state of American atheists, then, may have nothing to do with their lack of religious belief. It may instead be the result of their outsider status within a highly religious country where many of their fellow citizens, including very vocal ones like Schlessinger, find them immoral and unpatriotic. Religion may not poison everything, but it deserves part of the blame for this one.
See that? Your pursuit of happiness is responsible for others’ pursuit of happiness not resulting in happiness, you selfish bastages. I’m sure all of these unhappy douchebags would be happier if only I would invite them to Mass at my parish.
Related, at Rachel Lucas: Vandal Upsets Goths
invite them then! can’t hurt anything, unless they go militant on you like these homosexual rioters.
Okay, jefferson:
All you unhappy atheist douchebags are invited to my parish for Mass.
Who gets the unhappiness rollover minutes?
This is what the Episcopal Church exists for. You can believe whatever you want there.
So the atheists are unhappier because they feel excluded from those religious institutions from whom they loudly, happily choose to be excluded?
Um … wha?
Let me get this straight: Athiests loudly denounce religon and religous believers as misguided/delousional/etc. and then feel they are excluded from the at-large religious community? That just reads funny to me.
Also, any athiests out there are free to attend any United Methodist function you desire. Just be sure to bring the 3-bean casserole. Open Minds, Open Doors and all that jazz.
Excuse me while I summon the Waaahmbulance.
Perhaps we can hold a BooHooster rally for them?
I think we should invite them to a day of silent, secular meditation at the emo wall.
Me, “It isn’t that I don’t like people, it’s just that I feel so much better when I’m not around them” – and so do they.

The UU’s love them some atheists. They worship God, together. Or something like that.
This sounds like some people just can’t accept their own choices.
Also, I swear I know how to spell “religion”. Curse distracting AIM windows.
I just wonder if these unhappy atheist are the ones that fall into that 12% of atheist that beleive in God…
And, of course, the solution to this problem is to get rid of religion so that we can all be unhappy together, thus being happier in our shared misery. I get it now.
According to the atheist bus thread, atheists feel offended and criticized if they are invited to church. Maybe we should leave off the services and just invite them to potlucks?
It seems like the lack of socialization is the problem with atheists. No church = no friends or commitments outside work, apparently. Considering my church attendance has been non-existent since I moved, I understand the isolation. You’re not alone, atheists! You always have a place at the potluck!

Your Mom.
‘Cause she had you.
Some seem to be worshipping the government and the POTUS now.
I don’t recommend this, but at least the options have broadened.
Even everyone walking down the street looks at me funny – damn Religionists! If they look at all – snif.
Only an academic or a moron could write that not wanting to be a part of an organization with rules leads to not following the rules.
My invitation to the next Democratic party fundraiser is in the mail, I’m sure.
I just like that you called people douchebags in your post title. that priceless. And thing the illuminati, which many are atheists, even if they play the religious card fro political reasons will be found out soon enough.
The sorry state of American
progressivesatheistsSome people going to Church an hour a week just seems to drive them up a tree.
EW, the quoted article essentially calls atheists “douchebags”.

well played!
Jeez. You choose a belief system (and that’s exactly what atheism is) that puts you outside of 80+% of the populace, and then whine about being “all alone.” You are, indeed, a bunch of loser douchebags.
The Vandallas? What, did they bust into “(Love is like a) Heat Wave” or somethin’?
I’m and atheist and I’ve been in the dumps the last two weeks, because my family man, God fearing supervisor ran up $40,000.00 on a couple of credit cards, then called me while I was in Biloxi blowing $2,000.00 to tell me I suck (I’ve only paid him $120,000.00 this year) and quit. He then sent me an e-mail the next day (After I spent $700.00 to fly my wife and I back home) to offer to do sub contract work for me. He then took the Simms card out of his company phone and has been soliciting all of my clients this week.
On Tuesday when they arrest him, I’m going to be the absolute happiest atheist on earth. Trust me.
All that said, being in the bible belt, damned near all of my friends are pretty religious and I love them all. They’re nice people.
Oh, and his wife…which is gonna make me estatic.
But best of all Chris Elliot’s daughter is joining SNL this weekend. She appears to be quite the piece of ass. From the loins of Chris Elliot. Really. Which really makes this atheist really happy.
Right on, Donald. Being a Christian is no excuse for being an asshole. Amen.
There are plenty of self described “Christians” who act disgracefully. most of us Godbotherers understand that humans are inherently flawed and are presented with the evidence of that truth everyday, from within our own lives and the lives of others.
The writers of that study have failed to understand that behavior doesn’t reflect the belief system (except for the tiny proportion of religious radicals.) It reflects the behavior of individual humans.
Do you really want an atheist to go totally over the top douchebag? Tell them you’re agnostic. To them its even more of an affront than being a Christian.
They want to be part of community life? Then join Kiwanis, or Lions, or Civitans, or some other club and get involved in your communities; you know, the people who live around you.
Whiny little idjits.
So rather than work a little harder to prove their worth and be included, they sit and sulk because people aren’t as trusting of those who don’t share their beliefs.
Riiiiight.
Here are a couple of other dudes who think about this stuff and their various and sundry links and comments for more.

[…] Hey, they want to organize and do good works? Good for them. I’m glad at least that I won’t be held responsible for their misery. […]
