Kondracke Calls it for Obama! [updated]

On Hume’s show.

Early, sure. But how can anybody doubt Mort?

Socialism is on the move, people. Embrace the volk!

****
update: The end is near. Americans have chosen socialism. Or, more precisely, Americans have been carefully trained, over a number of years, to chose a candidate based on the most superficial of features (age, appearance), and for the most contrived of reasons (the campaign is “historic”; the candidate represents the “ideal of diversity,” etc).

But sorry: if Georgia and Indiana are too close to call at this point, the transition to a nannystate is just about complete.

Time to regroup and prepare ourselves for the lean years.

  1. Bob Reed says:

Mort was a Hillz guy, but has fallen in line with O! since the end of the primaries.

Although he will admit to O!s flip-flops and shortcomings, he’s still a lefty when it comes right down to it…

Not as far left as Kos, Chris Tingle, and Olberdouche, but a southpaw all the way!

    Best Wishes

  2. Dan Collins says:

In the 1996 sci-fi film Independence Day, Mort Kondracke appears in the beginning of the movie on a morning talk show speaking about the ineffectual leadership of President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) saying, “Leadership as a pilot in the Gulf War is completely different from leadership in politics.”

  3. lee says:

    I saw that too.

Hume was like; “none of that Mort, there will be time for all that later.”

    Pretty funny.

  4. McGehee says:

Well, I know that when I want an infallible forecast of a future event, I rely 100% on a guy who is constantly being corrected on the facts in front of millions of people by Brit Hume.

  5. cranky-d says:

Mort’s okay in my book. That book is called, “Mort’s Okay.”

  6. happyfeet says:

Good catch, D. Also Mort is wrong. How sad for him. My country is a vibrant nation of free enterprise what has a robust respect for the individual and is notably a place where dirty socialist righteous winds the fruited plain do not bestir. Like ever.

  7. cranky-d says:

Once Brit retires, I wonder who will be keeping the pundits in line. He lays a smackdown on Juan Williams around once per month I think.

  8. Sdferr says:

When your tortillas aren’t good and fresh, like, right off the griddle, your tacos just won’t be snappy good. Get ’em hot, well yes, good eats. Get ’em tired and old (like Mort) they’re damn near inedible.

  9. Benedick says:

I hope y’all are going to be around here tonight. I am. Peeks at The Corner here and there, but I’m going to need interactiveness as the Jack Daniels sets in.

  10. Benedick says:

Plus, the awesome girlfriend who is a Democrat but voted McCain and put the smack down on the local liberal elections officials today is still sick, so no temptations in that direction.

  11. dre says:

The O! has a waiting list for fellatio from many quarters.

  12. Benedick says:

But we need to pick a thread and roll with it. Jeff’s prolific publishing today has scattered the banter. Not a complaint — just sayin’.

  13. Sdferr says:

Who ran against Warner for Warner’s seat in Va?

  14. dre says:

@13 Mark Warner is the former Gov running against Gilmore for John Warners’ seat

  15. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

But we need to pick a thread and roll with it.

    Good point.

Jeff, how about a designated post for election returns?

  16. C. Smith says:

    @Sdferr:
Gilmore ran against Buck Teeth, but BT was highly popular as governor. So VA will have probably the two most conservative Democratic Senators going, in Warner and Webb.
BTW, the proper quote is “embrace the suck”.

  17. happyfeet says:

that one is already called for Warner it says

  18. Sdferr says:

Gilmore, former RNC chair, not to mention Gov, no? Not the Va. I grew up in any more, looks like.

  19. lee says:

Jeff is probably busy sweating or something. This post would be appropriate I think.

  20. and Mort continues to disappoint me. *sigh*

  21. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Fox claiming VT for Obama, KY for McCain.

Says McCain up by 53-46 in FL, but the number of votes counted is minuscule.

  22. Benedick says:

Will MSNBC air Olbermann’s suicide if McCain wins?

  23. Sdferr says:

Mort, for all his pretense of evenhandedness, has always been a nasty piece of work as a rhetorician. oh, I meant, he’s a narrow minded jerk.

  24. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    WV now called for McCain.

  25. Carin says:

Hubby says maybe we should move to Ky. I say top-thread is the best for kvetchen. Is it too early to start drinking?

  26. Is it too early to start drinking?

    hells no

  27. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

McCain romping in VA so far. Down a bit in North Carolina, but I expect him to do better when the rural votes come in.

  28. lee says:

FOX just had the popular vote at 51-48 Obama, close to 1.1 million votes each.

  29. Carin says:

I refuse to check any other network but Fox. If anything funny happens on one of those channels yousguys will have to tell me.

  30. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Fox has EV at 8 McCain, 3 Obama.

  31. lee says:

Is it too early to start drinking?

I’ve been asking myself that question since I got up this morning.

The answer has always been “no”.

  32. Carin says:

    Kondracke is useless. Humorless.

  33. Benedick says:

I’m on Drink Three. Expect the typesmanship to deteriorate. Plus a steady increase in the use of non-words like “typesmanship.”

  34. Carin says:

I hate exit polls. I’m not really interested in why and who voted for whom.

  35. I’m debating whether or not I should wait for RTO to get home.

  36. Benedick says:

    Drink, maggie, drink!

  37. Carin says:

Benedick, are you drinking Benedicten? Or “B&B”? By any chance? Because that would be so totally appropriate.

  38. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Hmm… just remembered that I have some Bushmills I’ve been saving.

  39. Carin says:

How long till he gets home? I mean, any chance you’ll be totally plowed by the time he arrives?

  40. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Whoah…. McCain 70% in Georgia. I mean, yeah, Georgia, but still.

  41. Carin says:

Humn … I have Absolute. And CC. And, Rum (variety). I don’t drink that stuff – it’s for entertaining. But, if things get desperate… I’ll hit it.

  42. How long till he gets home?

I don’t know, really. some time after the polls close.

I mean, any chance you’ll be totally plowed by the time he arrives?

    well, it doesn’t take much.

  43. Sdferr says:

Have a Dr. Pepper maggie. A proud texican institution prune/chocolate soda.

  44. mmmmmm, Dr. Pepper.

  45. kelly says:

“Is it too early to start drinking?”

Is this some sort of a sick question? I cast my vote at 8:30 this morning, dammit. I’ve been waiting all day for this. I mean, I just voted for McCain. But entre nous, it wasn’t all that hard. He’s only somewhat less socialist than O! And only somewhat less of a Global Warmer putz. Gah.

  46. Carin says:

OMG, they’re showing the chicago party now. My husband is reminded of Nurnemberg.

  47. lee says:

    Maggie,

In the old movies when the dashing warrior returned home, his best girl would have a Martini shaker ready to pour.

We never could tell if the shaker was full when she poured it for him of course.

    Just saying.

  48. Carin says:

Baracky has really driven all that need to drink to vote for McCain out of me. I did it sober.

  49. fine, I’m heatin’ up the tasty garlic bread pizza and havin’ a beer.

  50. Jeffersonian says:

Will MSNBC air Olbermann’s suicide if McCain wins?

That one’s going pay-per-view. And I’m ordering it.

  51. Benedick says:

I’m on Jack Daniels tonight. Cut with just a splash of Coke, since I’ll be imbibing for somewhere in excess of six hours. If I kill the Jack, I’m moving on to Grey Goose. Tomorrow’s hangover will be the stuff of Irish ballads.

  52. Carin says:

We could really use a troll here. Liven things up.

  53. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Delaware called for Biden –er– Obama. No surprise there.

  54. Benedick says:

FNC just called South Carolina for McCain. Game, set, match.

  55. Carin says:

Oh, I think I have some Jack too. I may have some bushmills. Man, I’ve got a shitload of alcohol.

  56. Carin says:

    YEA, South Carolina!

No Citron. I could use a Cosmo.

  57. kelly says:

The better half and I decided we’re not even going to turn on the TV tonight. Which isn’t all that big of a hardship since we rarely watch anything but 30 minutes of the local news and college football.

  58. happyfeet says:

I think I’ll pick up some wine at Ralph’s.

  59. Sdferr says:

Radio says WV is sending the imbecile Rockefeller back to the Senate. Crushing stupidity really.

  60. happyfeet says:

    Also, chocolate soy ice cream.

  61. The better half and I decided we’re not even going to turn on the TV tonight.

I’m not turning it on, either. yet…. RTO may have other ideas, though I suspect he may just pass out, what with being up since 4:45 this morning.

  62. BushHitler Junior can never win. Obama is bringing hope and light and joy and sweetness and joyfulness and change and hope to everyone. We will have peace on Earth, and all the ReThuglicans will die horrible deaths. You Nazis can’t steal this one like you stole the last two!! ARBEIT MACHT FREI, MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!!!

  63. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

He was going to be an election judge or poll watcher, right, maggie?

  64. Sdferr says:

Is House preempted for election coverage tonight? god I hope not.

  65. dre says:

I think “exit polls” is what the tv people use as a segue to the real polls. Make one side “winning” and then to pump viewers show the other winning.

  66. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Maybe we should try saying some bad things about Orlando Bloom or Zack (?) Ephron (?) or whoever he is.

  67. kelly says:

Guess I’ll have to open a big old Italian red wine. Y’know, as an homage to the original fascists.

  68. He was going to be an election judge or poll watcher, right, maggie?

yes, he’s an alternate (meaning other party from the main) precinct judge.

  69. Benedick says:

Wolf Blitzer is a passionless dweeb.

  70. Carin says:

That’s really sweet, Benedick-troll. But, it’s just not the same. Plus, you can’t really parody those folks anymore. They’ve really destroyed the genre.

  71. lee says:

Say, that wasn’t a bad impersonation!

  72. happyfeet says:

oh. I just realized we are thorless.

  73. Mr. Pink says:

Troll impersonation: You guys can’t steal this one because our stealing efforts outmatch yours this year. See we learned from you and perfected it. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHHA

  74. Carin says:

There will be no “House” on the night of Baracky’s ascendancy. Remember the “Hope” sticker in the one scene last season?

  75. guinsPen says:

    “Cujos” to JG.

  76. happyfeet says:

    thorless and somewhat jeffless

  77. Sdferr says:

It wasn’t too bad a rant, BIAT, but BIAT just doesn’t get it. How’s about BIATCH or sumpin or other?

  78. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Oklahoma goes McCain. Again, no surprise.

  79. Carin says:

Don’t make me check out that other thread. I like it here. What did Orlando say? And, why the fuck does a citizen of the UK think he can insinuate himself in our politics?

  80. Guantanamo abu ghraib Nazi cocksucker shit fuck Karl Rove queer fag moose bitch!!!!!!!

  81. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    IL Obama. Duh.

  82. And, why the fuck does a citizen of the UK think he can insinuate himself in our politics?

because we rule the world! but we shouldn’t.

  83. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

I’m sure every twelve year old girl in the country would vote for Obama if she could, Carin.

  84. Sdferr says:

No House!!!? The fuck you say! late evening ruined, damnit, ruined I says.

  85. Carin says:

Jeff should be here later, shouldn’t he? Thor won’t show his face until things are looking O’s way. Oh shit, they’re calling a bunch of states of O! thor incoming any moment now.

  86. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    South Carolina McCain.

  87. Carin says:

That one was better, Benedick. You still need to curve your spelling into a bit more phonetic.

  88. Sammy Sosa says:

    Cujos to you, JG.

  89. kelly says:

Better, BIT, but you need to toss in some reference to Calvino, call everyone racists, and then remind everyone how damn smart you are. I’d give it ‘6’. Tighten it up for the next round.

  90. dre says:

“And, why the fuck does a citizen of the UK think he can insinuate himself in our politics?”

Because O! has a nice internet site that takes his money wherever he is.

  91. pdbuttons says:

  92. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    TN now marked as McCain.

  93. Sdferr says:

SC called for the feygelah Lindsay Graham, schade.

  94. Rob Crawford says:

I’ll be catching up on the DVR, checking out what the blogosphere’s talking about, and waiting for the Librarian to call.

I took this afternoon off. Voted, dropped the laptop off at the Apple store (hey! the repairs it needs are still covered under the warranty on the last repairs for the same problem!), and dropped the car off at the body shop. Got a rental — and have decided that I could never buy a Nissan Serta or whatever it is.

Supposedly, everything’ll be repaired by the end of the week.

  96. Sdferr says:

NC Senate called for Kay Hagan over Liddy Dole. Hasta la pasta Liddy.

  97. Carin says:

Tonight Rob? Isn’t enough happening? You need to add the Librarian into the mix?

  98. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Anyone heard anything on the Murtha race?

  99. Benedick says:

Mitch McConnell hanging on is big. Liddy Dole losing sucks.

  100. Benedick says:

I’m looking, SBP. One district over from me.

  101. lee says:

Mcgruder, what do ya got against capitalization?

    Help a brother out!

  102. Sdferr says:

Zero vote count on Murtha race thus far. Fox election tracker site here, plug in your interests on the left.

  103. Sdferr says:

No count on the Ron Klein, Allen West race in Fl. dist. 22 yet either.

  104. Jeffersonian says:

PA for Hugo Chavez, Jr. Not good.

  105. lee says:

OK, I girded my loins and ventured over to MSNBC.

They got the EV at 103-34 Obama.

  106. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Fox now showing Mac in the lead in the popular vote.

  107. lee says:

That Gregory Character is hosting it looks like.

  108. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Thanks, Sdferr.

  109. mcgruder says:

  110. dre says:

Looking at the line I faced today with a government run program, why anyone thinks that the government can be “efficient” in extending its control is a mystery.

  111. Benedick says:

Carl Cameron is like a puppy.

  112. Rob Crawford says:

Tonight Rob? Isn’t enough happening? You need to add the Librarian into the mix?

She works late on Tuesdays, and we talk during her drive home.

  113. dre says:

    “#Comment by Jeffersonian on 11/4 @ 7:18 pm #

That precinct was the one with the “The New Black Panthers”

  114. Benedick says:

Barone on PA: Exit polls show big margin for Obama, but no precinct returns, so relax.

  115. Sdferr says:

Ugh, they just called NH Senate for Shaheen over Sununu

  119. Benedick says:

Is it just me, or are they calling states WAY earlier than last time?

  120. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

  124. kelly says:

Second bottle of Italian red. Damn fine fascist wine, trust me. Go McSlain!!

  125. MarkD says:

The tragedy is that the Contract with America would probably have led to another Republican sweep of the House. It appears that fiscal conservatives have been run out of both parties. Don’t blame me, I voted for loser who lost, not the loser who won.

I will, however, pay. I have a job.

  126. phreshone says:

I just came to a realization. Reagan didn’t end up winning the Cold War…

  127. Jonas Sedlar says:

Time to regroup and prepare ourselves for the lean years.

    Yep.

I know this is gonna sound kind of, uh, collectivist. But this is where we really stick together, y’all. This is the point where we stick together, quietly for now if need be, and figure out how to transform America back into what it originally was: an idea. Liberty.

  128. happyfeet says:

oh. It’s more humpty dumpty than that. There’s no going back, but tomorrow can be better.

  129. kelly says:

Been nice knowing you folks. Hope we can meet up at the re-education camps.

    We can make lanyards together.

  130. kelly says:

Oh, wait. No lanyards. Finger painting of Our Dear Leader.

  131. kelly says:

No macrame either. No shoe laces as well.

Songs. Lots of songs to Dear Leader.

  132. Jonas Sedlar says:

There’s no going back, but tomorrow can be better.

Yes it can, in a phrase. Maybe “going back” wasn’t quite the right way for me to put it. But I do think the overall trajectory — the truly big, zoom-all-the-way-out picture — is in the favor of individual liberty and rights. It’s been the steady upward course of man for millennia. The dips here and there have been just that: little dips in the graph. The arrow ultimately points up.

We may be stuck with this weird soft socialism stuff for the rest of our lifetimes, but over the long run, humans will keep figuring out how to be more free.

Yeah, that doesn’t help us much tonight, I know.

  133. Boots says:

I guess we took it for granted that when Reagan won the Cold War & killed off communism, that it would stay dead. Instead it slithered off to an upscale suburban neighborhood and reinvented itself.

  134. Rusty says:

Honest to god. I had no idea there were that many stupid people in this country.

  135. jim says:

    Obama, socialist?
    LOL!
Damn, dude, I’ll have what you’re smoking.

However … as for E-begging online: now THAT’s some REAL wingnut-welfare socialism that we can believe in, my friends!

    Pot, kettle, both black.
    Much like your next president.

  136. McGehee says:

I had no idea there were that many stupid people in this country.

    Um, 1992?

And they’ve been reproducing since then.

  137. JET says:

It seems that the entire right wing needs to read up on what the words Socialism and Communism really entail. The way they’ve been thrown around as scary buzz-words, they’re really in danger of losing their original meaning.

Look, using any international metric, Obama – like most prominent Democrats – is right of center. Just because the dividing line in US politics has been moved quite far to the right doesn’t mean that anything to the left of that is Socialism. Get a grip, grow up, read some non-partisan books on politics and history, and then try again. Right now you’re only embarrassing yourselves.

And now you have to suck it up and respect the president, just like you’ve been demanding people do of Dubya. Or else you would be…*gasp*…hypocrites.

  138. Jeff G. says:

I wonder if Jim really did LOL!

No, seriously. I wonder about such things.

And of course, jim reads Andrew Northrup, so one would expect that he wouldn’t know the difference between charitable donations made of one’s own free will to fund an enterprise that one enjoys, and “spreading the wealth around” — to include “tax cuts” for people who don’t pay taxes (in the form of checks written in the names of those who do).

As for JET, maybe he needs to read Harper’s 2006 piece on Obama, who talks about why he’s been forced to be “pragmatic” — and how only once the Dems (read: progressives) have enough political power can they attempt to implement their agenda.

National Journal called Obama the most liberal member of the Senate, and the 4th most partisan. He is hardly “right of center” — unless by that he means that, as I’ve been writing since 2004 at least, he’s so far left he’s circled back around to join the paleocons and America Firsters. Congrats on that, “liberals”.

We’ll see what he does with trade.

As for the last bit, all I can say is I respect the democratic process. But I’ll work to see that the mainstream press is no longer considered “objective,” and that idiots like jim — perhaps even accidentally — stumble upon a clue, rather than waiting back for Andrew Northrup to tell them who to sneer at.

And really, if you don’t like the word “socialist,” try on fascist for size. Because that’s what progressive politics is. Inevitably and inexorably. It’s in the DNA.

  139. McGehee says:

Look, using any international metric, Obama – like most prominent Democrats – is right of center.

Too bad he wasn’t running for international president.

  140. says you! McGehee. Obama maybe thought otherwise. kinda explains the Berlin to do.

    Why they hell not.
