I began my resistance campaign this morning at the Barnes and Noble coffee shop by placing a copy of each magazine with a hagiographic photo of Barry on the front (about 10 of them) on the cafe tables, along with a “2009 Obama Calendar — Words of Hope and Inspiration.” It looked creepy, but I thought I’d save them the trouble ’cause they’ll do it in the aisles in a few weeks anyway.
Wife said that was mean to the waitstaff, but they always wrinkle their noses when I buy a conservative magazine with my latte, so, “Yes I can!”
I know, I know. I’m trying hard not to despair.
Interestingly, my hubby and his best buddy went to volunteer to be “Observers” on Election Day. The lady said that due to security concerns (i.e., specific threats), every McCain-Palin office in PA now has 24-hour security. The nice lady my better half talked to was armed with a gun and pepper spray and, in Mr. Goodfellow’s words, “Holy HELL, was she ever jumpy.”
But all the rage and nastiness, natch, is coming from the elephant side of the ticket. Bah.
Recommend that your hubby and his buddy work as a pair, Puck, but not obviously together (that way if trouble starts, the one not involved can call for backup before stepping in).
They should have cellphones with a lawyer’s phone number ready to go at the punch of a button — one who will commit to showing up in person on short notice. Arresting pollwatchers is an old-school machine politics trick.

It is strange to hear so much talk of human on human violence in the context of a mere quadrennial election. I mean, Heyzeus, we’ve only been doing these things for 210 yrs, it’s not like we’ve had any practice at it.
Is the seeming novelty of the phenomenon just a function of forgetting history? Or never having learned enough history to begin with? Or is it born of an expectation that the trust earned over years of cooperation between political opponents wouldn’t disappear so easily?
Most of my life passed under the constant control of congress in the hands of one party. It wasn’t salutary, but it wasn’t hell on earth either. That period, though, was a time with a big difference, a different condition which no longer exists. Its name was USSR. Who knew that such a threat papered over such a nasty distrust?

Yes, and yes. If there’s one thing to remember about the left — and that includes Frank Rich et al. — it’s that they are ahistorical, and plagued by a glaring lack of perspective. Most don’t even know the basic roots of their own ideology, which is a point Jonah Goldberg and others have emphasized for many years.
It’s the reason, for instance, that someone such as George W. Bush — who by any objective definition is a moderate, even center-left figure — could be held up as a radical conservative, his policies decried as “fascist.” With the left, it’s a continuous game of goalpost-moving. The further left we’ve moved as a society, which is the story of the past century, the more vicious have become the attacks on “conservatives” of increasingly moderate stripes.
I often wonder if it’s a function of the constant influx of young people into the left. There’s no drive to know history, to discern broader trend lines, to dig down to foundational premises, when you’ve adopted an ideology because it “seems right” and feels good.

In modern America, the left is these “certain people.” It’s a princess-and-the-pea phenomenon: Ever smaller discomforts — e.g., some random yahoo yelling an epithet during a rally — are treated as grave, damnable offenses. The princess, unaware of her hypocrisy and lack of perspective, doesn’t realize how breathless and overheated she looks as she bitches about it.

I am so open minded, that I have visited those site repeatedly, yet rarely have seen anything worth serious consideration. As for Kristol, I fail to see the disconnect between Kristol advocating Palin going on the attack, and what he writes today. I think McCain’s advisors are doing a very poor job.

If fairness to Kristol his real point this morning is that you don’t go half way with those attacks. If you go down the smear road you’ve got to go all the way. He was angry at McCain for having some sense of decency. McCain just doesn’t have enough Lee Atwater for Kristol’s taste.
