Faces of Crisis [Dan Collins]

AP: Ohio Shooting Puts Face on Mortgage Crisis

Not Very Publicized Faces of Health Insurance Crisis

(h/t Darleen!)

Bushit for kids!

I was thinking of building an adobe Obama, but that would be racist, somehow, I’m pretty sure.

    Dan

You can use my screenshot from #2.

  2. lee says:

“if you want health insurance, get some”

    That’s crazy talk!

  3. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Darleen, next you’ll be telling me that I have to get up and get my own beer from the refrigerator.

Shouldn’t that be the government’s job?

  4. happyfeet says:

This is fun having Dan and Darleen here. It’s sort of retro. I get a kick out of it anyway.

I was just thinking the same thing. Those rollicking ought-sevens. It’s like looking in a box and finding your old chemistry set and thinking “good times”.

  6. Dan Collins says:

I can’t believe I had that much ephedrine.

By the time deputies came to escort Addie Polk out of her home of 38 years, the 90-year-old had taken out her life insurance policy and placed it next to her pocketbook and keys in the neatly kept house.

Polk took out a mortgage in 1997 and refinanced several times after that, court and property records showed.

She took out a 30-year, 6.375 percent mortgage for $45,620 four years ago when the house was appraised at $31,230.

    Seriously??

Polk’s cause was taken up by U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich and fueled blogs on reckless lending practices rampant during the housing boom. Mortgage finance company Fannie Mae dropped the foreclosure, forgave her mortgage and said she could remain in the home.

Really? I guess I really am a yutz for saving my money, only borrowing what I can pay back, and doing without. It is unfortunate that she’s 90 years old (which makes me an AGEIST! I suppose), and there is the possibility that there are age-related issues going on here. (My grandpap (86) keeps getting snookered into giving $10 here and there to “charitable” organizations, but I can’t imagine him being snookered into taking out a mortgage on his paid-for house.)

I guess if the elderly are being kicked out of their homes and young people can’t even afford health insurance, Bush’s policies must have been worse than I thought.

  8. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Although a “reverse mortgage” can make sense for elderly who have no offspring…

They give you a monthly payment against the value of your house. When you die, the house is sold to settle up.

  9. panther girl says:

    Okay, fair enough.

Unrelated, I just watched part of the Bull**** video. You guys are just trying to bum me out today aren’t ya? ;-) I need to log off and play with my kid.
