Meh. All specifics on how much statism we need and who can best implement it, no discussion of fundamentals. I miss Ross Perot; populist nut or not, he served to raise awareness of how debt is, you know, something that needs to be addressed. And I suppose it’s too much to ask for Barr’s number two to have been invited; he could have taught both VP wannabes a thing or two about folksy charm.

I think that she knows perfectly well that she reads very little and that any honest answer would reveal that she reads absolutely nothing which would provide her with good information on the world around her. There’s an old photo of her with a John Birch pub, though, so she already knows that Eisenhower was a commie stooge, I guess. That may come in handy. But, yeah, I’d be pretty surprised if she was caught reading The Economist or Foreign Affairs or anything like that.

For good or ill (and I think ill), we are stuck with a two-party system in which both parties have been moving steadily leftward as long as I can remember. I don’t expect this to change any time soon. I don’t like the fact that all third-party candidates get stamped with the “crazy” stamp, but that seems to be the way it is. I blame George Bush.

I tend to think Palin is being hamstrung on the credit mess until the bailout is done. The election will turn on whether or not McCain wants to play pretend statesman and stay “collegial,” blaming the mess on “greedy Wall Street” or if he suddenly “learns” that there are lots of factors involved that point back to Dems and, in particular, Barack Obama.
Maybe by that time he’ll discover the guy’s ties to radicalism, too, and fucking broadcast it. Could be waiting till the last election to drop the Ayers bomb. Because I have a feeling most Americans simply aren’t aware of the connections, and that McCain simply must be saving it up for when he thinks it will have the most impact.
As for Krauthammer, I suspect it galls him he has to vote for a statist ticket that is supposedly “conservative.” Also, he resents that Palin gets him all hot in the trousers.

I totally agree and I feel that was a big mistake on President Reagans part. I wasn’t clear enough on my main point, In that Reagan would have recognized his mistake and taken responsibility for that wrong decision.
