Objectivity [Dan Collins]

What could be more objective than a chart that plots major websites on a horizontal axis of scurrility-earnestness, and a vertical one of opinion-news?

One conservative site, Instapundit, squeaks into the intersection of the news/earnest quadrant.

  1. Rob Crawford says:

So FireDogLake and Crooks and Liars are more “news” and “earnest” than Instapundit? Good, Lord, what universe do these people live in?

(Oh, and nice of them to forcibly resize my browser window. Asshats.)

  2. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – So then, you maybe were expecting the SecProggs to say they are demagoguing partisan hacks, who can’t present a word of news without spinning it to cover their lying propaganda. Sure. Thats going to happen.

  3. ThomasD says:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&defl=en&q=define:earnest&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title

characterized by a firm and humorless belief in the validity of your opinions

In that sense FDL is light years more earnest than Insty.

  4. The Lost Dog says:

Not surprisinly, it gave me a Father’s Day headache.

But, scurrility is a gteay word!

  5. The Lost Dog says:

    Ummm…

    …great…?

  6. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

I dunno…”gteay” sounds kinda scurrilous. I’d stick with it.

  7. Slartibartfast says:

That might be interesting if “Earnest” and “Scurrilous” were on the same spectrum.

Plus, it’s got Media Matters on the News/Earnest axis. David Brock?

  8. ThomasD says:

The Dems always said that dissention is the highest form of patriotism, so I’m sure Obamessiah will not mind any of it.

  9. ThomasD says:

    That last item belongs elsewhere…

  10. B Moe says:

I will give them earnest, its the news thing that made me blow coffee out my nose.

  11. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

No, no really. When I think of “earnest news,” I think of Jane Hamsher.

  12. Slartibartfast says:

The blackface thing was news, wasn’t it?

  13. Mikey NTH says:

Do you mean ‘news’ as in commenting on it or ‘news’ as becoming the subject of it? If the latter then FDL falls under ‘news’.

  14. Karl says:

To be scrupulously fair, NewsBusters is in the earnest news quad as well, to balance MediaMatters.

I hope everyone checks the descriptions in the rollovers. My fave is the reference to Excitable Andy’s “clear eyed political commentary.” Y’know, like the “airing” of the Alex Jones stuff.

  15. Dan Collins says:

    Thanks, Karl. Missed that one.

  16. Karl says:

Of course, Insty does not consider himself conservative, so there’s really only one conservative site in that quad.

  17. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, but then, as you´ve noted, Teh Moderate Voice &ct.

  18. mojo says:

Hey, whadda ya want from a NT fag mag?

    Sorry – was that scurrilous?

  19. Fletch says:

    Karl-

My fave is the reference to Excitable Andy’s “clear eyed political commentary.”

I think mine is “Duncan Black… interacting with a huge number of prolific commenters.”

    OPEN THREAD!

  20. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – FDL and “news”. Maybe if you definition of “news” is fantasizing amd delusional echo-chamber sycophant cheering. I especially enjoyed the “How we beat Lieberman like a drum” series of Hamsher and her fellow barking moonbats. That there was some “earnest” bullshit, it was.

  21. serr8d says:

What is this ‘Wonkette’ (wittiest political blog around) crap?

Can you go there for sugartits?

  22. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

“Can you go there for sugartits?

    – I don’t believe so. Ann-Marie was an “ass” girl, all the way.

  23. geoffb says:

So all those left wing site more closely resemble a Jim Varney movie than right wing sites? I’ll go with that.

  24. David R. Block says:

Anyone who expected differently from Vanity Fair isn’t thinking.

  25. warmbats flew out my ass says:

So where does PW fit on that grid? To the Left of Little Green Footballs I am thinking.

  26. McGehee says:

If the bats that flew out of your ass were cold, I’d be worried.
