You guys are stuck with me … I can’t comment at Ace’s. It’s like being banned, but I’m not. Comments just don’t go through. Aren’t you guys glad that never happens to me here?
That brings back memories of watching Soul Train on Saturday morning and watching my idiot sister try to do all the new dances. And Don Cornelius…and that Soul Train dancer with the Worlds Longest Hair Extensions…
I used to watch that, too, Lisa. One of my favorite songs, which I covered with some friends in a band years ago, is the Cornelius Bros’ “Treat Her Like a Lady.” We sang it for all the radical humanities grad students.
In a way, what is happening to Obama is unfair. He was no doubt just cynically using Wright all of these years for black cred, the way most politicians do with their base, whatever it happens to be. I’m sure we could all find examples of Republicans cozying up to noxious Religious Right figures in order to gain cred with social conservatives.
For all of those years, the unwritten rule in the culture and the press was that the Religious Right crazies like Pat Robertson were fair game, but ethnic crazies were off limits. Al Sharpton, who is every bit as bad as Wright, was even accorded the dignity of being a Presidential candidate for a major political party.
How was Obama to know that the rules would suddenly change in the middle of the game? Maybe his claim to be the post-racial candidate even contributed to an atmosphere in which the press would finally feel emboldened to scrutinize Wright in the same manner that they would scrutinize any other candidate’s inner circle associates.
The real shame is not that Obama was as cynical as every other politician, but that we have had 20 or 30 years of stifling political correctness in which no one dared to challenge the Wrights and Sharptons of the world.
My Summer mix CD last year paired the Cornelius Bros. with Candi Staton’s cover of “Stand By Your Man,” which I’m guessing would have been just as popular with Dan’s radical grad students.
And here’s the link for Iowahawk’s “Dear Barry” column mentioned above.
#11: LOL. And important distinction.
#12: I would love to see pictures of you in your groovy cover band. Did you have some awesome flair pants and stack shoes?
the Cornelius Bros’ “Treat Her Like a Lady.†We sang it for all the radical humanities grad students.
Don’t forget Sister Rose! My first band did Treat Her Like a Lady and another one by them, maybe Ride Captain, Ride? Imma have to go Googlin’ now, lol.
Ace really nails it with his post on Wright today.
Of Spades rants about typical white people today.
Ace said “niggling.” Bony finger of accusation in 5…4…3…
I’d say Bill Moyers’ rehab job is pretty much dead by now.
When I lived in Milwaukee, I attended Our Lady Queen of Spades parish.

Must’a been named after Pushkin’s tale. Well, maybe not.
They smile in your face
All the while they want to bait your race
Those B’rackstabbers.
Ohhhh you fucker. I tried so hard not to laugh. But that was too good.
Yeah, this is right up there with the “Unelectable” duet.
In fact, if this is not Insta-lanched, I will call for an investigation.

Don Cornelius was the Man. Not “The Man,” but the Man.

What they do!
The Pips are doing commercials now, y’know. Sad.
Burdge!
Letters to Barry was pure Genius!
In a, you know, combination of angel dust laced pot and homemade LSD and a bottle of Maddog 20-20 kind of genius.
You too, Collins.

They played songs?

Woops! I meant “an important distinction”.

Have I damaged my authenticity by not doing humanities grad student songs and, instead, pimping ourselves exclusively to the drunken frat boy crowd?
I mean, playing Lynyrd Skynyrd. Cream, Zep and Allmans was so much more fun. That and the sloppy drunkeness.
I wish I had the flairs and the stack shoes. Not that groovalicious, alas.
Ride, Captain, Ride was Blues Image. Great tune, though.
Damn, the blog ate another comment.
