It Is Time for You to Stop All of Your Smirking [Dan Collins]

I agree with Ezra Klein that there’s nothing funny about prison rape.

Other things about which there’s nothing funny include foetal alcohol syndrome, cholera epidemics, mobile phone-induced brain cancer and Carrot Top.  Feel free to add your own.

Sponge Bob is funny, though. Can we agree on that?

  2. Slartibartfast says:

    Gender-selective abortion: not funny.

Also completely devoid of funniness: Sadly, No!

Unless you’re amused by the mentally impaired, I mean.

  3. Slartibartfast says:

    Good morning, Carin.

  4. Mikey NTH says:

Fatal transmission disease isn’t very funny.
Well okay, when it happens to the jerk down the hall who has that Lexus, then it’s funny.

  5. Dan Collins says:

Carin: I’m not going to let you jack this thread.

  6. Carin says:

    Morning Slart. Dan.

  7. Pablo says:

There’s nothing funny about Ezra Klein, except for him being named Ezra. Oh, and broccoli.

  8. Dan Collins says:

You see? There’s a distinct difference between “isn’t very funny” and “there’s nothing funny about.”

  9. Carin says:

RACIST. What do you have against sponges?

  10. Carin says:

Even though Bob and Patrick may be teh gay. And you theocons won’t let them get married. That’s not funny either.

  11. Slartibartfast says:

What do you have against sponges?

    They’re breeding grounds for bacteria.

Which could be fun for the bacteria, I guess, if they had any self-awareness.

  12. Slartibartfast says:

You know what is funny, though? Pictures of guys with the tops of their heads conveniently cropped out. You just know they’re shiny up-top, when that happens, so why the hiding?

Plus, the first sentence in my link is, possibly, one of the most unintentionally funny things I’ve read so far this year.

  13. Richard Simmons says:

raped by up to five black men and two white men at a time
Who do I have to kill to get on that cell block?

  14. Dan Collins says:

You know, Slart, that would be threadjacking, but tragically, his head is flat.

  15. Dan Collins says:

    Sweatin’ to the Uglies?

  16. alppuccino says:

I would think that the unfunniness of prison rape would have more to do with staging and production rather than material. Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.

  17. The Thin Man says:

“raped by up to five black men and two white men at a time”

Wow. That’s a shtupping to fellatio ratio I can’t even begin to calculate.

  18. serr8d says:

Sheepiness in the prison system: nuttin’ funny, honey.

  19. serr8d says:

A bit screwy, maybe. But they took away stocks. And scourging.

  20. alppuccino says:

Bringing the pillory back would also solve the problem of what to do with all that rotten unpicked produce due to new immigration laws.

  21. Enoch_Root says:

    Bill Maher – decidedly un-funny

  22. Enoch_Root says:

And Spongebob is not teh Gay. I like to think of him as artistic.

  23. Carin says:

So, Spongebob and Patrick are just really good friends? Come ON! Sandy is SUCH an obvious beard.

  24. Dan Collins says:

There’s a definite South Beach vibe to Bikini Bottom.

  25. JD TWP says:

I like the episode where Sandy beats the holy hell out of Sponge Bob with her karate. But I am a homophobe. And a racist.

  26. MayBee says:

Ezra (at his blog) “We could also, however, spend that hefty sum of money on interventions known to reduce criminality, which include everything from universal pre-kindergarten “

Using prison rape to sell your universal pre-K idea: kinda funny

  27. jon says:

California uses 4th grade reading levels to decide how much prison space will be needed later. Those nine-year-olds getting viewed in that way? Kind of funny.

Not funny, haha funny. Just funny.

  28. JD TWP says:

interventions known to reduce criminality, which include everything from universal pre-kindergarten

I would be interested to know where this universal pre-kindergarten has been proven to reduce criminality. I thought our school systems were already a mess. Might as well indoctrinate them earlier.

  29. Carin says:

Well, it’s a shame to that we have those government barriers to education, jon.

  30. McGehee says:

There’s nothing funny about Ezra Klein, except for him being named Ezra. Oh, and broccoli.

    He’s named Ezra and Broccoli?

You’re right, that is funny. “Broccoli Klein.” It sounds like something you’d find on a chart illustrating just how much broccoli would have to be in a dish before former President Bush (41) would refuse to eat it.

  31. McGehee says:

California uses 4th grade reading levels to decide how much prison space will be needed later. Those nine-year-olds getting viewed in that way? Kind of funny.

Also funny that way is that, where I live, eighth-graders spelling at a fourth-grade level win the county spelling bee.

  32. serr8d says:

It sounds like something you’d find on a chart illustrating just how much broccoli would have to be in a dish before former President Bush (41) would refuse to eat it.

Or how much Al Gore could eat before having to pay for more flatu carbon credits.

  33. Slartibartfast says:

    Feminist jokes are not funny.

  34. alppuccino says:

    Feminist jokes are not funny.

The ones with parrots, lepers, and cannibals are.

  35. McGehee says:

    Why parrots?

  36. alppuccino says:

    Why parrots?

    You know – plumage.

  37. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

If we’re making Pretenders references, wouldn’t “Tattooed Love Boys” be a beter choice?

    Heh.

  38. Slartibartfast says:

    That’s not funny.

  39. SarahW says:

“Tragedy is I cut my finger. Comedy is if you fall into an open manhole and die.”

    -Mel Brooks

  41. Slartibartfast says:

Thank God he didn’t go with Space Invaders, that’d have been excrutiatingly not funny.

  42. Darleen says:

Hmmmm… stats show that the majority of male prisoners grew up without a father.

Is Ezra willing to state that intact marriages reduced criminality and is willing to support programs to encourage, support and promote marriage?

  43. Jim in KC says:

I doubt it, Darleen. Just universal pre-K. Starting at birth.

  44. cranky-d says:

In the past, at least, I have laughed at some of Carrot Top’s antics. So your premise is a sham, and the whole house of cards you have built has collapsed.

    GET THEE BEHIND ME, THEOCON!!!!

  45. Andrew says:

“If we’re making Pretenders references, wouldn’t “Tattooed Love Boys” be a beter choice?”

TLB has jumped the shark due to its involvement with Guitar Hero II. It is thus not acceptable to reference until such time as GH2 becomes ironically cool again. Say, around 2025.

  46. daleyrocks says:

Glenn Greenwald attempting to write a truthful post or claiming that one of his posts contains the truth is pretty funny.

  47. datadave says:

jacks are funny, esp. stepping on them.
I’ll speak for all the other Jack Fathers: Darleen’s are funny.

Yeah, for the Patriotic Gays picketing the Westboro Baptist Church. They’re just plain having Fun!

    Peckerheads are Funny too.

Ezra Klein did a fine article, thx dan. And he was bipartisan about it pointing out a Democratic Governor’s son being a jerk. It’s sad that America condones both an overabundance of prisons and what goes on in them…at least a lot of America does apparently.

  48. JD TWP says:

Is it too much to ask dd to actually make sense every now and then?

  49. cranky-d says:

Is it too much to ask dd to actually make sense every now and then?

    Yes. Yes it is.

  50. Darleen says:

    an overabundance of prisons

overabundance of ignorance (willing or otherwise) indicated by such a sentiment.

  51. Rob Crawford says:

In the past, at least, I have laughed at some of Carrot Top’s antics.

This weekend, suffering from a sore throat, I watched a movie titled “The Aristocrats”. It’s a documentary on the joke with the punchline “The Aristocrats!” — if you don’t know the joke, Google it.

Carrot Top was in it, for about a minute. He was funny, mainly because he made fun of himself.

Funniest was Bob Saget, half afraid of ruining his squeaky-clean image, half afraid of ruining his comic bona fides by not telling the joke.

  52. Enoch_Root says:

12 inch? good God, man… is that really appropriate given the thread?

  53. John Cheshire says:

    paully shore – not funny

  54. Rob Crawford says:

    paully shore – not funny

Except for the movie “Pauly Shore is Dead”, which *was* funny.

  55. JD TWP says:

I must be one of a handful of people that thought “The Weasel” was hysterical.

  56. ArteneBratry says:

    thanks much, dude
