This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Talk about a mashup. It’s the ultimate confluence of Marshall McLuhan, Andy Warhol, and Iggy Pop. It exists in that strange universe that could only be possible in this media age of total connectivity. When The Red Army Chorus did the “Yes, they do” answer, my coffee went up my nose.
Somewhere, Ronnie Van Zandt is smiling.
Update: I should have noted that one of the first things that struck me was the professionalism. Having seen some of the stuff that comes out of Eastern Europe, I was expecting something that was entertaining for its weirdness quotient, and nothing more. The production values, from the sound, to the video, to the staging, were the equal of anything you’d see here, and the band could play anywhere. The whole thing could have been a production number at the Oscars, which I think is the key to making it so surreal.
Update 2: It does appear that it took place at the 1994 MTV Awards, as BBR guessed in comments. I thought that production was a little too good for the Russkies.
Happy Christmas: Cold War Is Over
As Mr. Chekov would say, "Unbeliewable!"
H/t: CraigC at PW.
Somewhere, Ronnie Van Zandt is rolling on the floor clutching his sides and finding it hard to catch his breath.
Those commie soldiers were having the time of their lives.
Wow! I mean … uh … wow! That was … ah …it was like … um … I never … ever … holy … the hair and … stripes …
Wow! Great googly moogly! Oooooooh… faints
Seems to me that a particularly vivid LSD flashback would look and sound something like that. Especialy if the entire stage imploded at the end of the song.

Not that you would know anything about that. ;-)
Oops
Um, yea, JD, it’s just what I’ve heard, ah, you know, from other, err, people who, ah, did that.
*sneaks away*
speaking of Stoli.
Guys, check http://konstantin2005.blogspot.com/2005/09/how-to-drink-vodka-and-stay-sober.html>this out.
Have fun, and drink responsibly.

BJ – That is one flashback I never want to experience. Now, if I could figure out how to flashback on shrooms and peyote, without actually taking it, that would be kind of fun ;-)
I’m pretty sure this performance is way old, because it makes my college-nostalgia sense tingle. I’m thinking it’s from an MTV awards show in 1994 (back when The New Russia was funky fresh!), which also might account for the atypical slickness.
That makes sense. I used to work in TV production, and that struck me as a very Western production.
Wow, you guys are having a discussion on production values, completely ignoring the reality that that performance was like the aftermath of a toad licking! ;-)
You forgot Dr. Suess among the influences, otherwise spot on. These guys have a ton of you tube videos, so far Stairway to Heaven and a warp speed Enter Sandman have been absolutely stellar. I am in love with these guys, they should move to Athens, they would fit right in.
This is beauty…
Finland isn’t really eastern Europe (Nokia is Finish) and I’m pretty sure the video is much older than “a little while ago”.
… I know I’ve seen it before.
Hahahaha! I just saw “Pretty Fly for a White Guy” with the Russian Army chicks (I think) singing “Give It To Me, Baby! Uh-huh, Uh-huh”
Hahahaahaha! Priceless.
Totally surreal!
I know the band is Finnish. The show was in Russia. And BJ, did I not point out that it was nutzoid?
uh…uh…uh…hmm…OK….
(yeah…acid flashback…that’s it…;)
Mashup, spot on – where are the lower prices? It’s all free, right?
Foreigners who say things like mash up and spot on really aren’t okay. Somethings wrong.

Dude, that has Jimson Weed written all over it.
