One of the cable news channels (okay, it’s FOXNews again) is running a story on how the folks who hand out Oscars® tend to love big-screen villains. The two most memorable “bad guy” performances snubbed for Oscar® nods? Nick Nolte in Sidney Lumet’s Q&A (opposite Timothy Hutton and Armand Assante) and Richard Gere (yes — the Benighted Buddha himself) in Mike Figgis’ Internal Affairs (opposite Andy Garcia and Nancy Travis) — both from 1990. Just my two-cents. Post yours below.

Kevin Spacey in “Se7en” and Mariah Carey in “Glitter”?
How can you not include Darth Vader? And Darth Vader again (in Empire)? A millenial snub if ever there was one—JB
Nobody knows who played Darth Vader. Probably some giant Swede.
I vote for Linda Blair in the Exorcist (the Devil is the ultimate badassss) and Michael Rooker in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. That movie still gives me nightmares.
This is a wierd one, because the movie is a comedy, but I loved Michael Caine’s hammy evil in Deathtrap. I haven’t seen either of the two movies you mention, but now I’ll be forced to rent them instead of getting any real work done.
Thanks Alot!
Gere WAS truly disturbing in that movie, wasn’t he. I’d forgotten. I have not seen the Lumet film, which is unusual because I really enjoyed the, uh, Wiz. Have you ever seen the Texas Chainsaw massacre? Leatherface’s brother was absolutely chilling. Along the same lines, the lead Hillbilly in Deliverance deserved either a Best Supporting Oscar or an alcohol bath. I’ve never been able to look at Ned Beatty without taking pity on him, and the hillbilly is responsible.
