Prisoner of Patriarchy Denigrates Prisoner of War [Dan Collins]

With friends like Gloria Steinem, it’s easy to see why Senator Clinton is having her ass handed to her in Super Slo-Mo:

McCain was, in fact, a prisoner of war for around five-and-a-half years, during which time he was tortured repeatedly. Referring to his time in captivity, Steinem said with bewilderment, “I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so.”

Steinem’s broader argument was that the media and the political world are too admiring of militarism in all its guises.

“I am so grateful that she [Clinton] hasn’t been trained to kill anybody. And she probably didn’t even play war games as a kid. It’s a great relief from Bush in his jump suit and from Kerry saluting.” *

To the Observer, Steinem insisted that “from George Washington to Jack Kennedy and PT-109 we have behaved as if killing people is a qualification for ruling people.”

But read the whole thing, since it’s chock full of further stupidities, including a shout-out to Amanduh.  Oh, and here are Allah Pundit and Cap’n Ed on these and related issues.

* Hahahaha. Of course not. Lady Macbeth procures the actual killing so as not to incarnadine her hands.

I dunno. The left in Texas, the Dem primary voter kind, is very Gloria Steinem, especially in the Baracky areas. Their irrelevance there has really for real stoopidized them to where I don’t think this hurts Hillary at all. Crawford Peace whatever is not really a one-off kind of thinger. They represent. Molly Ivins is not for real dead.

  2. Dan Collins says:

Sure. If Gloria Steinem’s dumb comments could be hermetically sealed within TX, it might benefit Hillary. But they can’t be. And her pandering about Austin pisses (dopey, young) people off in other wannabe-hip locales.

  3. happyfeet says:

Ok. But Austin is for real hip. I can’t explain it, but they’ve walked this line where they don’t tip into Seattle or Portland dirty anarchisty angerness or Santa Monica/San Francisco loopy enviro whacky fascist socialism.

  4. […] Well, yes, it’s the ensuing 25 years in the Senate that are generally cited as McAmnesty’s actual political experience. […]

  5. data2dave says:

Damn, Dan. incarnadine her hands is another reason to frequent here for the ‘creativity’. Been wondering why this place is called “protein wisdom” for awhile. Last time I noticed the office for the Dartmouth Review is next door to a Thai resturant. Do they keep the feral cat population under control and supply the Thai’s cutlets at the same time?

This place is addictive but b moe says I better get back to work.

And I have no problem with a lady for President, but this Lady McClinton has a Big Dog on chain that I’d rather never see again.

  6. Dan Collins says:

The Dartmouth Review was just starting up when I was there, and I never had anything to do with it, preferring to limit my affiliation with the College to classes, the library, my frat and skiing. I commuted from across the river almost the entire time I was there.

But the use of “incarnadine” on my part isn’t all that creative, considering Shakespeare neologized it in that play, AFAIK.

“from George Washington to Jack Kennedy and PT-109 we have behaved as if killing people is a qualification for ruling people.govern, they don’t rule.

But it’s true: scratch a lefty, find a fascist.

  8. N. O'Brain says:

    Let’s try that again….

“from George Washington to Jack Kennedy and PT-109 we have behaved as if killing people is a qualification for ruling people.

Interesting Freudian slip there, Mzzzz Steinem.

    Presidents govern, they don’t rule.

But it’s true: scratch a lefty, find a fascist.

  9. Dan Collins says:

Sure, I know Austin’s pretty hip, hf. So’s Madison, WI, and so are other places.

  10. Ric Locke says:

Texas Democrats = California Republicans, plus or minus media coverage.

Happyfeet, they have walked that line because they get more or less continual infusions from the rural/small-town areas, where Democrats survive by a sort of social inertia. Up until the Sixties Texas was as solidly Democratic as any part of Dixie, and those times live on in the county courthouses. As people move up into State politics they provided much-needed balance. They were, and remain, both conservative and religious. They are almost all old, though, and the new ones, the younger ones, mostly have (R) by their names.

A red/blue map of Texas would also be a map of population density, with red meaning lots of folks. As the cities grow their cores become insulated from rural and suburban concerns, but Texas’ land-use laws allow (the word may be “encourage”) low-density development, which considerably mitigates the effect.

Austin is a special case. As a broad generalization with many exceptions, the Democratic Party attracts people who want to run things and be In Charge, where Republicans are by and large people who would rather get on with their lives. Austin is the capital, so it naturally sucks in a majority of the former.

    Regards,
    Ric

Oh – I definitely agree there. When people in my little town ran for office, Democrat or Republican, you went to this old Democrat geezer and kissed his ring as courtesy before you announced. He’s dead now though.

The moonbats must be in a gleeful swirl at Gloria running with their sainted, anti-military creed. Of course, the only thing that gets taught to a soldier or sailor is the means to KILL AND KILL AGAIN. The fact that military memebers are taught reasoned decision making under pressure, organization, command structure, usefull trades and skills, teamwork and are aggresively educated is all secondary to the Code Pinkish simpleton world of Killbots! and Baby Rapers!! and Those Who Join Because of No Other Prospects!!

Speak up, Gloria, so the rest of the world can see the transcendant bigotry and ignorance of you and yours’ world view.

  13. Jack Klompus says:

Congrats Hildebeast, you just sealed your coffin. Yes Austin is PC central for Texas but there are a lot of military people here and friends and family of military who don’t take kindly to these jabs. And why would anyone have a useless, withered, old has-been hag of a cunt like Steinem doing anything or your behalf?

  14. BJTexs says:

And why would anyone have a useless, withered, old has-been hag of a cunt like Steinem doing anything or your behalf?

I believe, Jack, that you just described Hillary’s New Hampshire winning base. I wonder how all of those Wesley Clark bureaucratic military people who signed on with the hildebeast are feeling this morning.

  15. McGehee says:

I know I’ve cautioned here against using this line of attack against Sidney, but that was for the benefit of my friends. Democrats and their sympathizers like Steinem are more than welcome to entertain me by talking this way.

The only downside in my opinion is that it increases the chances of Sidney winning the election.

  16. BJTexs says:

    ?Sidney? Inside joke?

  17. Rob Crawford says:

    ?Sidney? Inside joke?

    McCain’s middle name.

  18. Mikey NTH says:

    John Sidney McCain III.

Who wants to talk about middle names now? ;)

  19. Jim in KC says:

Stop with the dog whistle, McGehee. You’re raising my midwestern redneck hackles at the thought that McCain has a girl’s name. Kinda like that “Hussein” thing making Barack Obama sound all foreign and stuff.

  20. BJTexs says:

    reddens in embarrassment

I’m going to attend a high schoool current events class as punishment.

    slinks away

  21. JD says:

    Sidney-ists!!!!

  22. JD says:

    Androgynous middle name-ists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Techie says:

Wow, did she really just attack George Washington? That’s a winning campaign strategy if I’ve ever seen one.

  24. ThomasD says:

If we elect on the basis of killing prowess why didn’t we have Sherman instead of Grant and Tibbets instead of Eisenhower.

  25. happyfeet says:

Obama promises genocidey goodness. I bet he’ll win for sure.

  26. Mikey NTH says:

Or LeMay – especially if you count raw desire to kill.

  27. happyfeet says:

Hey. Has anyone noticed that HP ad?

The 1930s through the 1950s can perhaps claim the title “Golden Age of Paper Dolls,” as their popularity during those years has never been equaled. During the Great Depression, paper toys could be afforded by all. Despite the product shortages of World War II, paper dolls were still manufactured, though on lesser-quality papers.

I just that that was kinda interesting. There’s like everything you never wanted to know about paper dolls here. The lady who wrote this might could be nuts though. She says, “And what woman (or man) over thirty does not remember paper dolls as the cheapest, yet most fascinating toy of childhood?” Anyway. Bless her heart. There seemed to be something of a lull is all. So there’s that.

  28. happyfeet says:

Oh. I just *thought* that that was kinda interesting.

    – cause of the Great Depression angle, which is what I mostly associate that concept with – it was an odd marketing gimmick for HP to run with right now I think.

  29. kelly says:

“I am so grateful that she [Clinton] hasn’t been trained to kill anybody. And she probably didn’t even play war games as a kid. It’s a great relief from Bush in his jump suit and from Kerry saluting.”

Steinem continued: “You see we progressive types are against killing. Now if a few hundred million people happen to die as a result of any form of totalinarianism, them’s the breaks.”

  30. kelly says:

Actually she might have said totalitarianism.

  31. Andrew says:

Since when is Sidney a girl’s name? It’s clearly ambisexual.

    That’s so much better.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone as smart as Steinem is supposed to be cannot fathom how throwing a bunch of sterile garbage at the concept of military service only strengthens it in the eyes of those to whom it matters. Does she really thing that these ideas are fresh or persuasive?

The way people like Steinem put it, you’d think that West Point was a one-way ticket to the White House the way the legions used to be for the consular chair. Let’s play count the Generals, shall we?

    Washington
    Jackson
    Harrison I
    Taylor
    Grant
    Hayes
    Eisenhower

That’s 7 out of 43. Sure, lots more have served in the military in time of war. But would anyone like to play Count the Lawyers? Please.

  32. BJTexs says:

Besides, kelly, there’ll be a patriarchy to blame. Somewhere.

If moms were world leaders there’d be no more war, just timeouts in thebillions!!

  33. Rick says:

    N. O’Brain stole my point. But it’s remarkable how casually the proglodytes refer to “ruling.”

Then they state that a President “runs the country.” They wish. Indeed, they do wish that. Ardently.

    Cordially…

  34. kelly says:

Warming to her theme, Steinem added, “Like all good progressive people we abhor people trained to kill. D & E is nothing more than a procedure. No different than an appendectomy.”

  35. BJTexs says:

Andrew, it’s reflexive and instinctual in those of her ilk. The dumb ones join goofball outfits like Code Pink because they don’t care. Non of the candidates are going to meet their looney criteria, anyway.

Steinem allowed her intellectual mask to slip in that comment, probably out of frustration at the way the melanin patriarchy is crushing the sistah. She’ll be in hiding for the next week and a half until Medea stops giving her the clenched fist salute and most of the rest of the country stops giving her a slighly less empowering gesture.

BTW: Wasn’t Clinton the first president never to have previously served in the military in any capacity?

  36. Mikey NTH says:

FDR was assistant secretary of the navy, but that really isn’t military service.

  37. Mikey NTH says:

John Adams didn’t do any military service either.

  38. happyfeet says:

Earlier this year, a group calling itself “New York Feminists for Peace and Barack Obama,” circulated an online petition that was a nuanced endorsement of the Illinois senator. It was so popular that the words “New York” were dropped from the name, and the effort went national.

Katha Pollitt, an author and columnist for the Nation, is one of the signers.

“Even if it were true that white women were more oppressed than black men” – as Steinem suggested – “that still doesn’t mean you should vote for Hillary Clinton,” Pollitt said. “It might mean you should fight for better enforcement of anti-sex-discrimination rules, but it doesn’t mean you should vote for the candidate most likely to wage a war.”*

It’s logic, that’s what that is. Cause of the thinking.

  39. Andrew says:

Looking deeper into my earlier comment, I’ve found a lot of interesting information re: Presidential military service, which I’m going to post in the pub as soon as I’m able. I’ve found a few more who were generals, but suffice to say, It doesn’t look good for Steinem.

  40. Rusty says:

Shit. I didn’t even know that old broad was still alive. What is she, a hundred?
