Elderly South African Rhodesian White Woman [Dan Collins]

insists Obama will be assassinated if elected, unless subservient to Miss Daisy, thus projecting her racism onto Americans:

If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing predicted in a newspaper interview published here Saturday.

Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in US history, “would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him,” Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Lessing, who won the 2007 Nobel Literature Prize, said it might be better if Obama’s Democratic rival Hillary Clinton were to succeed in her bid to become the first woman president of the United States.”

The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together. Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama,” she said.

It’s time for your jello cup, Doris. That’s a good girl.

I figure it’s wishful thinking. If he IS killed, she and her friends get to congratulate themselves on being so much more enlightened than those jerks across the pond.

  3. Taisa says:

Of course he’ll be killed, because unlike Mandela or Mbeki, he’s going to be leading a country with a long history of political oppression of minorities…..

  4. B Moe says:

Come on, you really think we aren’t more backward than the rest of the world?

Remember when NBC News sent some women in Islamic dress to NASCAR events, trolling for racist incidents? They just KNEW they’d get some reactions!

Except they didn’t. I bet the newsroom folks were bewildered for weeks.

  6. Topsecretk9 says:

Hillary is a very sharp lady.

Sharp enough to know when a good cry come in handy.

  7. Topsecretk9 says:

Also – “It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama”

    Driving Miss Daisy much?

  8. Synova says:

Don’t you know that failing to provoke racist incidents at a NASCAR race only means that it’s even worse than they thought because the racism was expressed in secret code words?

  9. Synova says:

The secret kind you can’t detect is the absolute worst.

  10. daleyrocks says:

They have Crackers in South Africa? Who knew? What was that apartheid shit all about anyway?

  11. Synova says:

Waitaminut… maybe she means that the CLINTONS would murder him.

Maybe she’s not a senile racist bat after all.

I have been a NASCAR fan since the 60s, and forget sometimes other peoples impressions of us. During the last ten or twenty years when the fanbase really started to grow, I would often go to races with friends checking it out for the first time, and one of the things that would always surprise them was the large number of black people in the stands. Most of them wearing Earnhardt jackets, by the way. Anyone who has ever been to a race knows that fanbase is one of the most misrepresented groups in the media.

  13. Does this just ‘sound silly’ to you, or do you have strong reasons to believe she’s being absurd?

  14. happyfeet says:

Strong reasons to believe she’s being fundamentally cowardly I think. Craven, even. Racist. Can’t you see that or is it a profound thought-piece? Should we go out on the grass and sit in a circle and rap about it? Jesus God.

  18. Well, I tend to think Obama would have the courage to take office even knowing this to be true – but I admire you for coming to his defense. Lessing’s solution is wrong, but the problem is real.

I don’t think the idea of an assasination threat against him is laughable, it’s worth seriously thinking about and preparing for. Of course, all Presidents and even candidates are carefully guarded.

I think the idea that Bush (and Cheney) have been more susceptible to assassination plots sans threats is more plausible, but when I read lefty blogs I am supposed to believe it’s freedom of speech, these threats.

But that is not what she said, this:
If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated…
Obama…“would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him,”

is what she said. Who is “they”, do you think? And don’t you think her statement is maybe just a little more absurd than your interpretation of it?

Chelsea attacked and made victim. United Obamasian Exclusionary African Church in America making history has chosen work for Hillary. Chelsea will be needing some too, so what’s good for her?

State Department employees come out about being Republican , ‘you should know I’m African American(like we want strokes and pain)’, and black. Powell, ‘my secret service officers must be African American,’ comes out for the United Obamasian Exclusionary African Church in America and Rice promises to come out later. State Department heads are so busy solving the world’s problems, maybe they should get jobs at the United Obamasian Exclusionary African Church in America too. There is Oprah, ‘how did you think my viewers would vote, what am I?’, who wants to be VP but she is talk show, so who?

It’s San Francisco’s Official Ice Cream! is all I know really. We just call it gay ice cream cause of the rainbows. And the San Francisco. And the carton thingies have Steve & Mike being all flirty about how the milk they use isn’t all hormoney. I guess I don’t know for sure if Steve & Mike really are all I love you Steve oh Mike I love you too, but until I find out different it’s sort of a strong hypothesis. The pumpkin is the best but that’s seasonal. And that is the story about the ice cream I bought today at Trader Joe’s.

Please research your topic before making blanket statements about:
    1. Lessing being South African.
    2. Lessing being a racist.
Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doris_Lessing Lessing is British. Born in Iran and grew up in Zimbabwe.
Lessing is a communist and her comments need to be seen from that angle.

  35. A. Pendragon says:

True, Ron – British people can never be racist, although if Mr. Show is to be believed, they (and they alone) can fly.

  36. daleyrocks says:

    Mary Poppins flew.

    And pans can’t talk.

  40. Rusty says:

Gosh. Ron. And here I thought that she was just a senile, old, racist idiot. Turns out she’s a senile, old, communist, racist idiot. Boy! My consciousness has been RAISED!!

  41. Challeron says:

And here I thought that Rhodesia was named after Cecil Rhodes, he of the Rhodes Scholarship, who believed that the White Man was Destined to Rule The World.

    No racism involved there….

  42. Log Cabin says:

Wait a minute! Shouldn’t it be Zimbabawe, not Rhodesia?

    Beware the racism!

  43. Rob Crawford says:

Lessing is a communist and her comments need to be seen from that angle.

And we *ALL* know communists can’t be racists!

Actually, I suspect her bigotry is particularly against white Americans.

  44. B Moe says:

Lessing moved to Salisbury to work as a telephone operator, and she soon married her first husband, Frank Wisdom, with whom she had two children, before the marriage ended in 1943.

So she parted ways with Frank Wisdom well over a half century ago.

  45. Ron says:

I haven’t a clue as to why the old bird was asked to comment about American politics. She does not have any credentials in the field. I think she meant to say that someone should assassinate old Bob M. It happens that names are confused when the batteries on hearing aids arn’t fully charged!

  46. Ron says:

OK, I agree. Bigotry would be a good description of her comments. My opinion is that communists being racialist seems a contradiction.

  47. Mikey NTH says:

Why should I take her analysis of US politics seriously? She’s a novelist; not a political analyst. This is one of those problems where a person who is an expert/talented in one field is given deference when she babbles about a totally unrelated topic.

For example, Sean Penn is an expert on acting; seamanship? Not so much.

  48. BJTexs says:

Oh Mikey. Haven’t you heard that celebrities (especially literary celebrities with their wordly ways and fictionally gravitas) deserve their big, bad soundstage for their views on EVERYTHING! Now that gentle Doris has been sanctified with the holy Nobel (see Gore, Al) her pronouncements on great and expansive political events gain divine status, just as the Oscar granted special analytical insights to Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.

Now please excuse me as I have to go find the curest little dog in my neighborhood and kick it like a PAT.

(Bmoe and Maggie: Of course I’m kidding about the dog. I’d only do that to a child.)

  49. Jeff G. says:

Obama is currently winning the popular vote among Dem primary voters, and — to many on the Right — is even preferable to McCain.

It’s quite possible a racist nutjob could assassinate Obama, were he elected. But such an action can only be attributed back to other folks superficially “like” the assassin (for purposes of argument, let’s say he’s White, middle-aged, and calls himself a Christian) by way of the kind of poisonous identity politics and hermeneutic sleight of hand that was popularized in the west by communist and socialist theorists.

Lessing lives in a tautology. Which, I hear, can be quite damp, and make one irritable. And have bad teeth.

  50. Sean M. says:

Personally, I’ll reserve judgment until Harold Pinter tells me what to think about it.

The worst genocidal political philosophy in history seems a contradiction?

Flying is easy. You just jump… and miss the ground.
