Maya Angelou [Dan Collins]

Her poetry is crap.  Does that make me a racist?

I totally never got her really but I thought her Hallmark line was astutely marketed. Toni Morrison’s Tar Baby I thought was very very cool and also it had hot lesbians but Beloved I never finished and then lost interest.

Nope. I’ve taught literature longer than Obama’s been breathing–Angelou sucks.

  3. Most modern poetry is horrible, like most modern art and attempts at classical music.

hmmmm…..i like quite a bit one thing angelou said…
it is very poignant especially when applied to the clintons…..

“…when someone shows you who they are….believe them.
    the first time.”

    But she’s so well spoken.

Christopher, I think that a lot of ‘poets’ have yet to figure out that random punctuation and line breaks does not make a diatribe a poem.

I blame marx for this. Because a lot of poets are marxists and, well, he’s dead and can’t fight back.

You can almost spell ‘glamour’ from her name, but you can spell ‘mangle you’. If she wasn’t black she’d never have gotten published.

Angelou is at best a mediocre poet. She’s still better than the swill that gets past off as poetry, which pays attention neither to rythmn, meter, or anything else of the art, which is better described as anti-poetry.

Anti-poetry came into existence for a reason, namely the stultifying encrusted dullness of a signifigant portion of 19th century Romanticism. But enough is enough.
I like writing sonnets. The form is ingeniously malleable.
