Needed: More Congressional Oversight [Dan Collins]

Rob at Say Anything:

But now comes the news that Congressional leadership, including Democrats, were notified of the CIA’s intent to destroy the tapes two years before the tapes themselves were destroyed.

Two years.

So here’s a summary of the situation: With the left in high moral dudgeon over alleged human rights violations about the Bush administration, the CIA was worried that the tapes would be leaked to be used as political propaganda.  A reasonable fear given the number of politically-motivated leaks coming out of the CIA in recent years.  This, obviously, would put both the intelligence gained during the interrogations and the agents conducting them in danger, so they decided to get rid of the tapes and rely on the written reports of the interrogations which they deemed sufficient.  So the CIA notified the appropriate bi-partisan Congressional leadership, waited two years, and destroyed the tapes.

Hey, haste makes waste (of political opportunism). They needed some time to read the reports, I guess.

  2. B Moe says:

“Jennifer Daskal, senior counsel with Human Rights Watch, said destroying the tapes was illegal. “Basically this is destruction of evidence,” she said, calling Hayden’s explanation that the tapes were destroyed to protect CIA identities “disingenuous.”

There are plenty of torture tapes to be found on Al Jazeera, what is Human Rights Watch doing about those? One thing these assholes are experts on its being “disingenuous”>

  3. Scrapiron says:

We should not worry about the destruction of the tapes, but should really worry about the moles/enemy/democrats (same) in the intel community. They are more dangerous than the terrorists and have killed far more people.

  4. serr8d says:

A secret agency destroys secret tapes to avoid some sort of ‘Plame’ revelation (unlike the Plame name game, information on ‘real’ agents divulged from these tapes would be seriously damaging…)

I would hope this incident is merely business as usual in the CIA.

    Quite a bit, actually.

  6. Fat Man says:

CIA heroes on Monday, Zeros on Friday.

Must be tough to be a liberal these days. To go from lionizing the CIA to demonizing them in 4 days. Give you wiplash for sure

Note. I understand that the NIE was isued by a different bureaucracy* than the one who tortured the freedom fighters, but I doubt that one person in a hundred outside the permanently obsessed and geeky knows that.

*Probably “The Knights Who Say Nie”.

  7. JD says:

The faux moral outrage from the Dems yesterday was almost breath-taking. It was almost like they were pissed that they could not use the tapes in their campaign commercials.

  8. B Moe says:

    “Quite a bit, actually.”

Complaining about Egypt. Thanks for helping me make my case.

  9. Good Lt. says:

    >>“Quite a bit, actually.”

Right, but what are they DOING about it?

  10. Drumwaster says:

Isn’t it enough that they care more than we do?

Or at least pretend to do so for their own political purposes?

  11. well, B Moe, he linked three articles about the same reporter… that’s a lot. isn’t it?

  12. Sandy Berger says:

I had nothing to do with the disappearance of those tapes. Honest.

  13. As I understand it, that’s pretty much the story as it happened. Pretty straight forward and without malice.

  14. The Lost Dog says:

Isn’t it ironic that these do-gooders, who get a wild hair about people trying to save our butts, would be the first to have their heads removed if Al Qeda got it’s way?

    Morons, one and all.

  15. daleyrocks says:

I urged them not to destroy those tapes! What were those morons at the CIA thinking. They needed to be preserved for future partisan leaks.

    Behold, the Democrat mantra.

  16. JD says:

It is incredible that not one of those Dems ranting about this yesterday mentioned the fact that they were informed of this two fucking years in advance. Even more incredible was the fact that the media did only just not call them on it, but then went and reported it without noting their dishonesty. I should no longer be surprised. The sheer audacity is really remarkable.

  17. Pablo says:

Well, someone has to, because I don’t care the tiniest little bit. However, I would like to know what law Ms. Daskal thinks was broken by the destruction of the tapes.

  18. steve says:

No pattern? Y’all are cool with the executive losing/destroying documents/emails/videos etc. – all coincidences?

I think it’s sadly hillarious that accountability is only asked for by people in the opposition parties. Brand loyalty – gotta love it.

Why you always gotta be hating on Bill Clinton?

  20. steve says:

“Why you always gotta be hating on Bill Clinton?”

I realize Bill Clinton’s slick, and I never voted for him.

    So what’s your point?

  21. Dan Collins says:

I think his point is, this kind of stuff was even more prevalent during the Clinton years. You realize, right? that the bipartisan Congressional Committee that was supposed to oversee this stuff was notified long before the stuff was destroyed.
I mean, Sandy Berger? He’s serving in an advisory capacity for Hillary after what he did, which still hasn’t been explained?
So, if that wasn’t a bigger problem for you, what’s your point?

  22. JD says:

Coincidence, steve? Give me a fucking break. Congressional oversight was notified TWO fucking years in advance. Over 700 days. And now the sky is falling. Mendacity at its finest.
