Professor Kingsfield: “Mr. Hart…! That is the most intelligent thing you’ve said all day. You may take your seat.”

  1. Nathan says:

“Speak louder, Mr. Hart! Fill the room with your intelligence!”

    Best Line:

“I think I shall have to dispense with the privilege of ringing you further”

That said, I HATE this movie because it’s the “Top Gun” for lawyers… Gimme a break, everyone thinks their field is a lot tougher than “outsiders’ think it is.

One of my favorite stories: I once sat in on the first day of the Harvard 1L contracts class (the class Kingsfield teaches in the movie).  Things went pretty much exactly like this:

Professor: My name is Professor , this is contracts class, Mr. Wong what is asumset? [not too sure on the spelling there–just going on phoenetics–as I, much like Mr. Wong, haven’t a clue what it means].

    Mr. Wong: …?

Prof: Mr. Wong, what is asumset?

Mr. Wong: … ummm … (flips through papers)

Prof: Mr. Wong, did you do the assigned reading for this class? (did I mention that this was the first day of classes?)

Mr. Wong: Yes! (Brightening here, as he thinks he’s about to sail into safer waters).

Prof: Did you understand the readings?

    Mr. Wong: Yes!

Prof: Mr. Wong, please read the second sentence from the assigned readings.

Mr. Wong: blah blah blah asumset blah blah–

Prof: Well if you understood the reading, you must know what asumset is?

    Mr. Wong: umm uhh ahhhhh

Prof: So then you DIDN’T, in fact, understand the reading?

Mr. Wong: uh, well, I, uh.

Prof: People, when you’re reading something, if you encounter a word you don’t know the meaning of, LOOK IT UP.

She then went on to ask close to a dozen additional people what asumset meant before finally finding someone who had actually toted their Blacks Law dictionary to class and had time to look it up before being called on.
