Truth or Kosequences [Dan Collins]

Zappatero at Kos comments on Colorado Representative Doug Lambert’s Lamborn’s “threatening” phone call to a couple whose letter to the editor accused him of taking casino money, stating, “this is beyond the pale. This will be repudiated even by the most rabid local wingers. And this, most likely, will get Doug on Keith Olberman’s Worst Person in the World list — if I have anything to do with it.”

Now, I don’t know anything about Doug Lambert Lamborn, and don’t much care. But I do wonder, was Tennessee John Ford ever on Keith Olbermann’s Worst Person in the World list?

happyfeet has more on our explosive expose:

The Denver Post chose not to print the full voice messages. Wonder why.

That said, the AP, drawing on a conversation they had with Lamborn, writes that:

Asked what he meant by consequences, Lamborn said: “When someone tells a lie, it just has bad consequences.”

That is all of a defense the AP hack allows Lamborn, failing to steno this passage from The Post:

Three days after leaving the messages on the Barthas’ voice mail, Lamborn wrote an open letter to Greg Garcia, chair of the El Paso County Republicans, asking him to investigate.

In an open letter to the party on Aug. 8, Garcia said the local party would not tolerate false or misleading statements in campaigns.

“That’s a lot of what I’m thinking of when I talk about ‘there are consequences,’ because Greg Garcia had said earlier that there is going to be a punishment if people tell lies in the course of a campaign,” Lamborn said.

The Post is trying to obfuscate the chronology:

Aug. 8 – Greg Garcia warns that “false or misleading statements” will not be tolerated.

Aug. 24 – Bartha’s letter is printed.

The Post does not report (!!?!) when Lamborn left his messages, but it would have had to have been August 24 or later, which makes really quite odd the AP’s statement that “No comment was available from the couple Sunday [Sep. 2]. A person who answered the phone listed in their name said they did not live there.”

It gets worse. The AP writes that…

Federal records confirm the donations were accepted, but Lamborn said he returned them. He did not say when and The Post said there is no federal record of them being returned.

Here’s what The Post actually said:

Nancy Brown, a spokeswoman for Jones Vargas, a law firm in Reno, Nev., that represents IGT, said the company’s PAC sent a $1,000 contribution to Lamborn in January. She said Lamborn returned the check, although she could not provide the date of the return.

Federal records do not show that the check was returned.

Civilian deaths rose in August to their second-highest monthly level this year, according to figures compiled Saturday by The Associated Press.

The Detroit Populist Times gets it completely wrong.

Meanwhile on this side of the pale…

“I hope you don’t have any earmarks in the defense appropriations bills because they are gone, and you will not get any
earmarks now and forever,” Murtha told Rogers, according to the draft transcript given to The Politico.

“This is not the way we do things here – and is that supposed to make me afraid of you?” Rogers replied.

“That’s the way I do it,” Murtha said.*

  2. B Moe says:

Slow day over there, huh? Some lame-ass non-threat in a Colorado Republican internecine spat is all they have to fuss about?

If “you better take that back or you will be sorry” were a resignation worthy threat DC would be a pretty desolate place.

  3. Major John says:

“And this, most likely, will get Doug on Keith Olberman’s Worst Person in the World list — if I have anything to do with it.”

Which leaves Mr. Lambert only two choices; suicide or exile.

  4. BumperStickerist says:

lest we forget Dan refused to indentify the Representative as ‘Republican’, probably relying on ‘context’ or ‘metanarrativeness’ or perhaps he thought it was ‘blindingly obvious’ that a Republican representative from the hotbed of canine combat that is Colorado would threaten action against a godless Hippie who wrote a letter to the paper.

  5. Kevin says:

Zappatero’s statement is ridiculous. This will get Zappatero on O’Reilly’s Most Ridiculous Item of the Day – if I have anything to do with it.

    Oh wait, I don’t :(.

If that was a threat, it was by far the mildest threat I’ve ever seen. Of course, being a conservative, nuance is not my forte.

What the hell is wrong with these Lambert people, and is this something John Edwards’ health plan can screen for?

  10. buzz says:

Well, to get on that Worst Person In The World you either have to be rational and conservative OR be Bill OReilly. Nothing to lose sleep about. Unless, of course, you become Bill OReilly. As far as the phone threats: “”We felt very threatened and intimidated, and quite frankly, scared,””
    Pussies.

  11. mishu says:

Sounds like getting on Keith’s list has the same ring as Jakov Smirnoff’s joke about the punishment for homosexuality in the USSR. “Ten years in jail with thousands of other men. There’s a ten year waiting list.”

It’s also quite funny that this diarist actually wants to name himself after that ineffectual putz in Spain.

  14. happyfeet says:

So these are the actual messages…

FIRST MESSAGE: “Hello, this is Doug Lamborn calling for either Jonathan or Anna. Something very serious has happened. There was a letter to the editor that you both put in your names to the editor of the Woodmen Edition and there is something that is blatantly false in that letter.

“I would like to get together with you and show this to you and appeal to you as a brother and sister in Christ. You didn’t give me that opportunity but I am happy to overlook that and deal with you on that level because I think that is the right thing to do and show you where you made a blatant, wrong statement.

“Now there are consequences to this kind of thing, but I would like to work with you in a way that is best for everyone here concerned. So please call me at your earliest convenience. It is now 2:40 (p.m.) on Saturday afternoon.

SECOND MESSAGE: “Hello, this is Doug Lamborn again, I’m finishing up my message from a moment ago. I got cut off. It is critical that you get back to me as soon as possible on this because I’ll be going back to Washington here in a few days and I have to make sure that this is resolved one way or another. And like I said I’d rather resolve this on a Scriptural level but if you are unwilling to do that I will be forced to take other steps, which I would rather not have to do. So please call me. This is essential. Call me by tonight, Saturday night and we can get together sometime Sunday afternoon.”

  15. happyfeet says:

You got to figure he mostly got his Jesus on cause the guy he’s leaving the message for is a Focus on the Family guy. I guess though that they didn’t want to be his brother or sister in Christ and handle this on a scriptural level.

You can go to hell for that I think.

  16. B Moe says:

“I would like to get together with you and show this to you and appeal to you as a brother and sister in Christ. You didn’t give me that opportunity but I am happy to overlook that and deal with you on that level because I think that is the right thing to do…”

I can see where that could be fairly horrifying to your average partisan campaign hack.

  17. When you use a phone to threaten someone, it’s a damn felony, same goes for a computer, end of story. I’m sorry that you’ve got your damn head so far up George W. Bush’s ASS that you cannot see that. Azzhat.

  18. happyfeet says:

    To that I reply:

So do Half White, Half Chinese chicks wearing shirt insulting liberals. Truth be known, The damn shirt was made in a sweat shop that Malkin Owns, somewhere.

You see why I cannot stand Michelle Malkin, She’s a flippin’ Moron, going to sell shirts like that. What an a$$hole!

She should be glad some of Americans haven’t gotten together and chased her ass out of the damn country. The way I see it, it was her KIND of people that bombed us in 1941. Just that damn simple. idiot slant-eyed bitch.

This is different than the tone Doug Lamborn took with the Barthas.

  19. ccoffer says:

What was the nature of the threat?

  20. happyfeet says:

Update: To the person who left the snide comment about me being wrong thinking that was a threat. It isn’t about my personal opinion. It is about what is the law and what isn’t. This man threatened two people using a telephone and that is a felony. End of story. If I or anyone else had done it, we’d be in jail, period. So, take your damn snide remarks and stick ‘em pal.

The consequences referred to are those promised by the Republican Party Chairman of the state for any false statements published by members of a campaign for the hotly contested seat.

In point of fact Lamborn was upset that he had been accused in the letter of accepting a casino campaign contribution which he had not accepted.

(Yes, but does that excuse the that that he commited a potential felony? I think not… -Editor)

I dunno. I think that sort of thing can shape your worldview. Most people I know from Detroit have a somewhat less refined sense of what constitutes a threat is all.

So you are upset with Lamborn for being upset with what the Bartha’s wrote. And you are deleting comments that you don’t agree with. With a computer. Walking a fine line there buddy.

  21. B Moe says:

“She should be glad some of Americans haven’t gotten together and chased her ass out of the damn country.”

Sure sounds like a threat to me.

“The way I see it, it was her KIND of people that bombed us in 1941.”

It was the Philipines that bombed Pearl Harbor? That attack was even sneakier than we thought!

  22. happyfeet says:

Oh – the blockquote didn’t take … the “So you are upset…” part was not part of the comments Mr. Populist deleted.

  23. happyfeet says:

This was Mr. Populist guy’s reasoning for deleting my comments, just so they’re here since his site seems somewhat fluid.

Update: To the person who left the snide comment about me being wrong thinking that was a threat. It isn’t about my personal opinion. It is about what is the law and what isn’t. 24. Dan Collins says:

Chuck seems a little angry. I can’t imagine that he’d be the sort to leave an upset message on someone’s answering machine.

  25. happyfeet says:

Oh – I already grabbed that.

It’s hot. And I’ve never been deleted before, except for that trackback thing which I kind of understood about.

  28. Major John says:

So, Chuckles. Where is your head, that you couldn’t read the whole transcript of Lamborn’s actual recorded phone messages, or that you can’t recognize context?

‘Cause, you know, there can be consequences for that kind of thing. Consequences like, being seen for a fool and a partisan wackjob.

But hey — you might consider that a badge of honor. And consequences, some of them are desirable. In the case of you being seen for a fool and a partisan wackjob, even “win-win.”

Zappetero has the brain capcity the size of an ant —Colorado representative Doug Lamborn has just made the final doo-doo step it what will be the shortest and most lackluster career the House has ever seen. Doug Lamborn’s recorded threats to a pair of voters critical of his views has now reached the pages of both the Denver and Huffington Posts.

    May 08, 2004

Dow faxed Stark a letter Thursday afternoon saying he was “appalled” by Stark’s vote against the resolution, noting many of Stark’s constituents are serving in the military with pride and distinction. Dow wrote that Stark’s vote shows he doesn’t support troops selflessly serving their nation, and “is a disgrace to the people of this district who have elected you.”

“I urge you to stop your contemptuous display of bitter partisanship and your politicization of this war,” he added. “Your actions are very divisive and destructive to the morale of our troops and the morale of our nation. I know that a majority of the population of the 13th Congressional District are very strong in their support of our soldiers and in their support of the war in Iraq. Your ‘NO’ vote today reflects that you are way out of touch with the people of this district.”

Stark soon left Dow a phone message saying that Dow didn’t know what he was talking about, and that Stark believed someone had put Dow up to writing the letter, perhaps even writing it for him: “I doubt if you could spell half the words in your letter.”

“But I’ll call you back later and let you tell me more about why you think you’re such a great, goddamn hero, and why you think that this general and the defense department who forced these poor enlisted guys to do what they did shouldn’t be held to account — that’s the issue,” Stark said. “So if you want to stick it to a bunch of enlisted guys, have your way, but if you want to get to the bottom of the people who forced this awful program in Iraq, then you should understand more about it than you obviously do. Thanks.”

    Chuckiepoo

When you use a phone to threaten someone, it’s a damn felony,

Sure it is, but (1)the couple has to file a police report (2)the police have to review the message and see, if it does, rise to minimal level of threat (3)forward it to the District Attorney to see if that office also sees it if constitutes a real threat (4)the DA then actually files a complaint

Have any of those things taken place? Well, then… I’d say the Bartha’s running first to the press about being “threatened” by someone they already possibly defamed in print makes their credibility suspect.

The editorial goes on to say that this “was reminiscent of the 2001 debate when Stark made a reference to the children of Rep. J.C. Watts, R-Okla., all being ‘born out of wedlock.”

Liberals are angry and racist. I’ve read that it used to not be this way.

Fun Fact: In 2007, International Game Technology (IGT) PAC has given money to NO Republican Senator that was not a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership.

The gave to Coleman (facing reelection in 2008), Collins (2008), Smith (2008), and McCain (2010), leaving out only Olympia Snowe (2012) and Arlen Specter (2010).

Of all their donations to individual Republican candidates or associates PACS – Representatives and Senators ($42,500), $21,500 (50.6%) has gone to Republican Main Street Partnership members.

The Republican Main Street Partnership is funded in part by George Soros, who also funds CREW, which has played a role in several other scandals of late in which the media have been largely compliant if not complicit.

I don’t know what this means, but Lamborn says he would not have solicited the donation.

  48. happyfeet says:

Ack – IGT did give $1000 to John Sununu, who is not a RMSP member, but a fellow traveller. I didn’t included that when I figured the above percentages, but I set his data aside because it’s kind of ambiguous. Clearly though, this is a PAC that’s interested in pulling the Senate to the left.

I understand, Chuck, that you delete comments that challenge your perception of an event even when the facts themselves demonstrate you are wrong.

So while both Dan and my comments that you deleted or would not post were in no way trollist or nasty or baiting, you’ll have none of it.

Hey, your sandbox your rules. But I, as someone who works in the judiciary, thought you’d like to know in the real world how the telephone messages you, yourself, posted would be considered by real life police/ddas … and I gave an apt analogy (a teacher calling a parent to resolve an issue before going to the principal).

I believe that constitutes bringing something new to the discussion.

Heck, I certainly don’t expect this comment to get by moderation…you’ve made yourself clear that you brook no dissent from your pronouncements regardless of facts. Just wanted to let you know you fool no one but yourself and your continued misrepresentation of the comments you deleted do not speak well of your credibility.

Chuck reminds me of the loser wimp on the Alltel commercial – the “leader” of the alternative cell phone company reps who are always chasing after the Alltel guy Chad, only to get frustrated at every turn. Based on Chuck’s screed where he lays out his disdain –in fourth-grade grammar no less — for all things telephonic, I suspect he is a blogger who truly does live in his mom’s basement.
