The only question now is whether Venezuela’s government or economy will completely collapse first.
The key word there is “completely.” Both are well into their death throes. Indeed, Venezuela’s ruling party just lost congressional elections that gave the opposition a veto-proof majority, and it’s hard to see that getting any better for them any time soon — or ever. Incumbents, after all, don’t tend to do too well when, according to the International Monetary Fund, their economy shrinks 10 percent one year, an additional 6 percent the next, and inflation explodes to 720 percent. It’s no wonder, then, that markets expect Venezuela to default on its debt in the very near future. The country is basically bankrupt.
That’s not an easy thing to do when you have the largest oil reserves in the world, but Venezuela has managed it. How? Well, a combination of bad luck and worse policies.
Venezuela imagined themselves unbreakable due to their oil wealth, now that oil is sliding to $20 a barrel, they’re screwed.
I can see a parallel here, with the dollar. Our leaders think we’re unbreakable because we can print as many as we like…
Greetings:
A while back, the Progressive (née Public) Broadcasting System treated me to a Sean Penn extravaganza via its “Charlie Rosie” interview program. (Media Disclaimer: Mr. Rosie is a bisystemite who also sucks at one of the Columbia Broadcasting System’s many teats.)
The purported focus of the interview was Mr. Penn’s latest journalistic accomplishment, to wit, an “interview” with a Mexican drug cartel leader/owner/hefe who operates under the “llama de drogas” El Chapo” (the capital “E” is “de riguer”). Now, some high school graduates out there might think that, you know, actors (and Mr. Penn is also one of those) are male folks who are practiced at repeating the words and portraying the emotions of others, so my uneducated journalistic sense always goes a bit to the queasy side when they offer their assessments especially to what used to be any of our surviving legislative branches. But, be that as it may, Mr. Penn gave his performance in an almost Obama-esque demeanor with much knitting of his now (post Spicoli) well-creased brow and all the angst of a man whose great talent, repute, and pecuniary means have not been sufficient to protect him from the slings and arrows of both outrageous fortune and the country that used to be the USofA.
And all the while, I’m sitting there like a bump on one of those logs my mother was so familiar with thinking “Where’s the El Chapo and El Chavez ‘Compare and Contrast’ question ???”
