Friday Fiction: 100 Word Challenge [Darleen Click]

The inspiration:

100wordSmoke

A story:

“He’s at it again, Mr. Tate.”

Her cat answered with a yawn, returning to sleep.

Gladys sighed, turning to peer through the curtains, watching her new neighbor silhouetted against a backyard fire.

Gladys took pride her in observational skills, keeping a journal of neighborhood comings & goings, compiling gossip & license plates. The enigmatic newbie was an exciting addition. Odd night hours, odder night visitors, strange shadows cast by intense, nearly smokeless, fires.

Gladys started, suddenly aware the fire was no longer tended. She was leaning towards the window when a hand gripped her shoulder.

“Dear, do come join us.”

” Liberty forms an oxide like anything else.

    Let me show you, Timmy.

When the ill begotten passions of a mob, long tormented, long kept snarled in a state of agonized confusion, long suspended between the crushing weight of senseless shame and the blissful release of incoherent sanctimony, reach sufficient concentration the ruin of the human spirit releases an animal heat.

The higher thoughts catch flame! They produce a salty ash, a wisp of particulates curling high, raise on a column of escaping sentience scorched from the ruin of a human mind.”

“Oh golly Mr. Wizard! I sure didn’t know that!”

    My hand……..

MY HAND! I see it for the first time.

    There it is.

It clenches and spreads. It collects all the light and cuts itself out of the darkness like a coupon.

MY HAND! Five fingers. A palm. A document of my labors and ills. The key to my future says a fortune teller’s lie. A union of digits and a meaty callused mitt.

A paw made into something more.

A manipulator. A grip. A poor substitute for a ping pong paddle. A flipper insufficient to the task of cutting water.

The mind opens: MY Hand becomes a bong.
