Progressive Authoritarianism and the Fluking of America [Darleen Click]

As an addendum to Jeff’s post on Left/Progressive/Liberal “morality” and their earnest belief that those that refuse to submit to it are either evil or the pawns of evil; which, in turn, calls for evermore control of society by law and regulation, democracy be damned when it doesn’t cooperate.

In many ways it explains the grudging envy many Leftists have for Arab-Palestinian jihadists or Chinese communists.

Behold in New York City, the rejection of private charity

So much for serving the homeless.

The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless. […]

For over a decade, Glenn Richter and his wife, Lenore, have led a team of food-delivery volunteers from Ohab Zedek, the Upper West Side Orthodox congregation.

They’ve brought freshly cooked, nutrient-rich surplus foods from synagogue events to homeless facilities in the neighborhood. (Disclosure: I know the food is so tasty because I’ve eaten it — I’m an OZ member.) The practice of donating such surplus food to homeless shelters is common among houses of worship in the city.

DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers. A new interagency document controls what can be served at facilities — dictating serving sizes as well as salt, fat and calorie contents, plus fiber minimums and condiment recommendations. […]

The ban on food donations is the direct result of work by many city agencies, all led by a mayoral task force.

Can you imagine that? How much money was spent, directly and in manhours, to write up pages of regulations on if/when/what kind of ketchup was going to be allowed for the hungry homeless to dip their State Certified, fiber-qualified, salt-free, fat-free, shredded-cardboard sticks into?

Of course this is more than mere “We need to protect our homeless from the exploitation inherent in home-cooked kugel”; it is just another step in the march to crowd out private charity in favor of Nannystatism.

This is more than the usual Left dismissal of private charity as ineffectual or jeers at conservatives who hold that charity is quite capable of doing the Good Works they always have – this is active, blatant hostility turned into law that forbids a charitable donation …

Or even parent volunteers

In Culver City, parents can set up non-profit organizations and pool donations to provide a better education for our children. For many years parents’ donations have paid for native-speaking adjuncts (at El Marino Language School) to provide vital help in language immersion classrooms, as well as other booster club-supported positions, such as classroom helpers at Linwood E. Howe School. Other schools have similar programs, or would like to start similar programs.

1. The union Assn. of Classified Employees, ACE, wants to take over these programs and force booster club- financed adjuncts and other part-time employees to join the union, and they threaten a lawsuit. […]

According to the District, the origin of this “crisis” is the threat of a lawsuit against the District issued by the leader of the Assn. of Classified Employees, Debbie Hamme. The District has told parents that all booster club (parent-funded) positions and other volunteer work by parents that could be seen as taking away work from members of Ms. Hamme’s association may have to stop. The parents would then be responsible to give enough funds to the District so that it could hire union members of ACE for those positions. […]

The booster clubs would be expected to continue paying for the programs, but lose all rights of hiring, control, supervision or decision-making.

And don’t forget, too, that the Progressive idea of “democracy” and “republic” is only those politics they have deemed legitimate.

Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke said on Tuesday that candidates running for office should have to pass a pro-woman litmus test in order to get elected.

Fluke, an advocate for the Obama administration’s plan to force health insurers to cover birth control, was on Capitol Hill for a forum on “Opportunities and Challenges for a New Generation of Women,” in celebration of Women’s History Month.

There should be a litmus test that they be pro-women so our votes have to include that requirement at least,” Fluke said. “And it should be a litmus test that applies to male candidates as well.” […]

“Numerous American women have actually written to me in the last few weeks saying that I should run for office, and maybe someday I will.”

Fluke would make a fine Diana Moon Glampers.

  1. Diamond insists that the institutional vendors hired by the shelters serve food that meets the rules but also tastes good; it just isn’t too salty. So, says the commissioner, the homeless really don’t need any of the synagogue’s food.

What do you bet some of those institutional vendors also donate to mayoral campaigns?

  2. Even Bob Beckel was ticked off at Bloomberg about the “no kugel for you!” rules.

  3. Obviously they’d rather the homeless dumpster dive for their dinner….

  4. It’s NYC, Swen. The homeless will have to fight with the Freegans for those day old bagels.

“One of my predecessors, President Rutherford B. Hayes, reportedly said about the telephone: ‘It’s a great invention but who would ever want to use one?'” Obama said in remarks in Maryland on Thursday.”He’s looking backwards, he’s not looking forward. He’s explaining why we can’t do something instead of why we can do something.”

hey what’s happening in st. louis?

who is this guy Carl Schurz ?

In 1876, he supported Hayes for President, and Hayes named him Secretary of the Interior, following much of his advice in other cabinet appointments and in his inaugural address.

who knew rutherford hays was the thread this country hangs on

  6. I have no idea what kugel is, but it won’t be long now before the Synagogue won’t be able to serve it at their events

Unless it’s been prepared by a DHS approved and certified chef.

You know you can’t trust those grannies to not poison the guests! Home cooking isn’t controlled and regulated like it should be.

  7. Kugel (Yiddish: ?????; also ???? kugl, pronounced IPA: [?k??l?]) is a baked Ashkenazi Jewish pudding or casserole, similar to a pie, most commonly made from egg noodles (Lokshen kugel) or potatoes, though at times made of zucchini, apples, spinach, broccoli, cranberry, or sweet potato. It is usually served as a side dish on Shabbat and Yom Tov.

It’s good stuff, Maynard. ‘Though not dietetic.

  8. Hmm. WordPress no likey hebrew characters, it seems.

  9. So should I only vote for women who have mens’ interests at heart?

  10. New York City: the tamest little city with a tight dog collar on it that makes even Canadians shake their head at all the wasteful constraining pointless bureaucratic bullshit.

  11. Obama : ” and as Socrates famously said “Hey, I didn’t order this, send it back”. Yep. He was a real kidder right to the end. Always asking questions though. “

  12. Those weren’t hungry animals stripping the bark off the trees in Central Park this winter.

  13. litmus test that they be pro-women

Did no one ask what this meant? Ask her to define pro-women? How are we to know who passes the test?

  14. LOS ANGELES (CBS) — City Council members were one step closer on Wednesday to becoming the first in the nation to adopt a resolution condemning certain types of speech on public airwaves.

Councilmember Jan Perry introduced legislation this week that would call upon media companies to ensure “on-air hosts do not use and promote racist and sexist slurs” on radio and other broadcasts.
The proposal cites a “long history of racially offensive comments as well as deplorable sexist remarks, particularly towards women and Black, Latino, and Asian communities” at KFI 640
“It is easy to become desensitized to what other groups find intolerable which ultimately fosters an environment where negative comments can go unchecked and corporate guidelines and policies are no longer being enforced,” the resolution reads.

Remarks from syndicated talk show host Rush Limbaugh referring to Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke as a “slut” and a “prostitute” for testifying on Capitol Hill about women’s access to contraception were also cited in the proposal.

My bolding. LA leading the way.

  15. Why anyone would want to live and/or work in New York City at this point, is beyond me.

  16. *Did no one ask what this meant? Ask her to define pro-women? *

Pro-woman = votes democratic. Sheesh, everybody knows that.

  17. leigh says March 21, 2012 at 8:09 pm
Kugel (Yiddish: ?????; also ???? kugl,

    Also Polish.

I wasn’t aware that being a woman was a handicap needing federal regulation to enforce.
So. This “equality” thing, where is that going now?

  18. Did no one ask what this meant? Ask her to define pro-women? How are we to know who passes the test?

Pro-woman means pro-choice. Period. You can have a documented history of sexual harassment — cheating on your wife, abusing your position of State authority to take advantage of women, stealing hair products from campaign workers and knocking them up — and all will be forgiven if you bite your lip with sufficient sincerity and vote to keep abortion safe, legal and rare free, convenient, and respectable.

  19. Well, see, that just follows, definitionally. As has been well-documented, you can’t even be a woman unless you support free abortion-on-demand.

    Ergo, pro-woman == pro-abortion, end of story.

Which, I suppose lends some credence to that standard Lefty Troll accusation that conservatives engage in various forms of faggotry. I mean, since so many of us routinely have sex with not-women

  20. You forgot “desert a drowning woman,” Squid.

  21. You have to be a Democrat though. That’s the immunity idol.

    Just ask Bob Packwood.

  22. Say what you will, that’s still the best name for “guy caught in a sex scandal” ever.

  23. …well, at least until Peter Bonerz gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

    So to speak.

  24. I was taught that Kugel was German for “ball.” Hence my Bic pen was a Kugelschreiber.

  25. Also, the last thing I would want would be to insult a Jewish woman’s cooking, lest she kick me in the kugels.

  26. Matt, Squid, and John. Yes, we know the definition.

I just want her forced to say it, explain it, in public. This is one of those things the left does but never explicitly says out loud. I also know that the answer will be a mish-mash of left wing tripe dressed up in $24 words.

However, the left has been engaged in a 40 year experiment in evolutionary selection in the academe. They have valued ideological purity and fervor over intellectual heft. An affirmative action program for progressive ideologues.

I think it is our duty to have the results of this experiment prominently and publicly displayed whenever possible. There is a reason she only “testified” before a fake committee of the like minded.

  27. I’m guessing that the people who wrote this legislation are patting themselves on the back about how much they’ve “helped” the homeless, unlike those weirdos who actually give them food.
Just another act of selflessness and superiority by forcing other people to live their lives according to your rules. Why should Mrs. Obama have all the fun?

  28. Kugel is German for ball. It has to do with its appearance when it is hot because it is puffed up like a ball.

  29. Or, you could go to the other use of kugel: UMC 9mm Browning MC 95grain – Kugel Faustfeuerwaffen – Munition
As in, if you keep screwing with me, I’ll shoot you in the Kugels with 9mm Kugel munition.
    Danke sehr!

  30. Damn eliminationist rhetoric. Down, boy! Back in the cage! Schnell!

  31. It seem like if you give a liberal activist enough microphone time, they always end up sounding crazy like Cindy Sheehan.
