Progressive Authoritarianism and the Fluking of America [Darleen Click]
As an addendum to Jeff’s post on Left/Progressive/Liberal “morality” and their earnest belief that those that refuse to submit to it are either evil or the pawns of evil; which, in turn, calls for evermore control of society by law and regulation, democracy be damned when it doesn’t cooperate.
In many ways it explains the grudging envy many Leftists have for Arab-Palestinian jihadists or Chinese communists.
Behold in New York City, the rejection of private charity
So much for serving the homeless.
The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless. […]
For over a decade, Glenn Richter and his wife, Lenore, have led a team of food-delivery volunteers from Ohab Zedek, the Upper West Side Orthodox congregation.
They’ve brought freshly cooked, nutrient-rich surplus foods from synagogue events to homeless facilities in the neighborhood. (Disclosure: I know the food is so tasty because I’ve eaten it — I’m an OZ member.) The practice of donating such surplus food to homeless shelters is common among houses of worship in the city.
DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers. A new interagency document controls what can be served at facilities — dictating serving sizes as well as salt, fat and calorie contents, plus fiber minimums and condiment recommendations. […]
The ban on food donations is the direct result of work by many city agencies, all led by a mayoral task force.
Can you imagine that? How much money was spent, directly and in manhours, to write up pages of regulations on if/when/what kind of ketchup was going to be allowed for the hungry homeless to dip their State Certified, fiber-qualified, salt-free, fat-free, shredded-cardboard sticks into?
Of course this is more than mere “We need to protect our homeless from the exploitation inherent in home-cooked kugel”; it is just another step in the march to crowd out private charity in favor of Nannystatism.
This is more than the usual Left dismissal of private charity as ineffectual or jeers at conservatives who hold that charity is quite capable of doing the Good Works they always have – this is active, blatant hostility turned into law that forbids a charitable donation …
Or even parent volunteers
In Culver City, parents can set up non-profit organizations and pool donations to provide a better education for our children. For many years parents’ donations have paid for native-speaking adjuncts (at El Marino Language School) to provide vital help in language immersion classrooms, as well as other booster club-supported positions, such as classroom helpers at Linwood E. Howe School. Other schools have similar programs, or would like to start similar programs.
1. The union Assn. of Classified Employees, ACE, wants to take over these programs and force booster club- financed adjuncts and other part-time employees to join the union, and they threaten a lawsuit. […]
According to the District, the origin of this “crisis” is the threat of a lawsuit against the District issued by the leader of the Assn. of Classified Employees, Debbie Hamme. The District has told parents that all booster club (parent-funded) positions and other volunteer work by parents that could be seen as taking away work from members of Ms. Hamme’s association may have to stop. The parents would then be responsible to give enough funds to the District so that it could hire union members of ACE for those positions. […]
The booster clubs would be expected to continue paying for the programs, but lose all rights of hiring, control, supervision or decision-making.
And don’t forget, too, that the Progressive idea of “democracy” and “republic” is only those politics they have deemed legitimate.
Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke said on Tuesday that candidates running for office should have to pass a pro-woman litmus test in order to get elected.
Fluke, an advocate for the Obama administration’s plan to force health insurers to cover birth control, was on Capitol Hill for a forum on “Opportunities and Challenges for a New Generation of Women,” in celebration of Women’s History Month.
“There should be a litmus test that they be pro-women so our votes have to include that requirement at least,” Fluke said. “And it should be a litmus test that applies to male candidates as well.” […]
“Numerous American women have actually written to me in the last few weeks saying that I should run for office, and maybe someday I will.”
Fluke would make a fine Diana Moon Glampers.Tags: bloomberg, culver city, fascism, food donations, new york city, sandra fluke, statism, volunteers
