Reuters:  “you say tomato, we say ‘insurgents.‘“

Car bombs kill 34 children in Baghdad”:

Insurgents have detonated three car bombs near a U.S. military convoy in Baghdad, killing 41 people, 34 of them children, and wounding scores.

In two other attacks, a suicide bomber blew up his vehicle near a U.S. checkpoint outside the capital, killing two policemen and a U.S. soldier, and a car bomb killed four people in the restive northern Iraq town of Tal Afar.

The Baghdad blasts coincided with crowds gathering to celebrate the opening of a new sewage plant. It was not clear if the event or a U.S. convoy passing nearby was the target.

It’s ”not clear”?  Um, did you even read your own next sentence?

The first explosion was followed by two more that struck those who rushed to the aid of the initial victims.

Seems to me the “insurgents” were going for a big body count—and using all available bodies to achieve it—not aiming at a specific military target.

Of course, to draw such a conclusion, one must surrender the romantic notion of a heroic Iraqi resistence movement—of brave “insurgents” carrying out symbolic attacks in the name of nationalism against an imperialist aggressor.  But then you wouldn’t be reading Reuters.

Incidentally, Ayman al-Zarqawi’s network is reportedly claiming responsibility for blowing up those imperialist kiddies.  Which, just thought somebody should mention it.

Yes, these killers are the same people Michael Moore refers to as “minutemen” leading some sort of noble revolution.

    Just thought I’d add that…

Insurgents? MFin’ Insurgents?  The second car bomber had to KNOW there were emergency personnel and other Iraqi civilians were around and STILL pulled the trigger!  These guys are terrorists, plain and simple.

“All hail the glorious resistance to the Great Satan who would feed you and give you electricty!  We must smite the imperialist dogs by blowing up your children, so that you may again be be hungry and in the dark for the greater glory of Allah.” Me?  I don’t think the 72 virgins are quite worth it.

    JFH:

Sad to say, they *did* know.  The idea is to kill/scare off rescuers.  Think of the sniper scene in “Full Metal Jacket” – wound the guy in front of his buddies to draw them into the killing zone.  Or, get them to stay put while they try to figure out what to do.

    No, blasts 2 & 3 were deliberate.

And that’s why, when you hear an explosion outside, you *don’t* go to the window to see what happened.

The problem is that they don’t see the quotes, and are actually trying to understand the evil demented child killers. And to register them to vote.

‘Cause, you know, even evil demented child killers have rights, and stuff.

Exactly, leelu and McG–and BTW, it’s also wrong for us to judge the actions of the evil, demented child killers because now we are exhibiting our ethnocentricity and the lack of a sophisticated world view.  I’ll risk ignorance and continue to call evil precisely what it is–EVIL.
