I think I just threw up a little in my mouth

The (Establishment) Empire Strikes Back.

Here’s a clue: teaching people how to best massage the truth while speaking in euphemisms and empty platitudes, is not civil. It is dissembling in dulcet tones, using gentle language.

And the more we reward empty, feel-good rhetoric, the more we reward the emotionalism and bumper-sticker politics of the left.

So. Fuck your “civility.”

Dicks.

    Rush hit that.

It’s worse. The gubmit wants to contract with software companies to help them game social media sites.

    Virtual Concensus!

  2. Shaitan says:

If you don’t like what we are saying, you are not being civil.

  3. SGT Ted says:

Its just more “Stupid teabagger racists need to shut up” bullshit.

  4. McGehee says:

    “National Institute for Civil Discourse”?

    Fuck that shit.

  5. bh says:

They can suck my dick. Seriously. Fuck them.

  6. Gary says:

As the elite say — “Civility for thee, not for me!”

    Fuck that shit.

Is that something like the “Peace Studies” departments some “forward-thinking” universities have started?

  10. LBascom says:

“Our country needs a setting for political debate that is both frank and civil,” Bush said in a statement.

Read my lips old man, the country needs politicians to tell the truth and keep their pledges.

Isn’t there an airplane somewhere you should be jumping out of?

  11. Bob Reed says:

Interestingly, I hear no wailing, gnashing of teeth, and garment rending over the lack of civility and downright lying by the public employees protesting in WI.

    Imagine that…

Among my personal favorites is the outright lie that Walker’s going to call out the WI National Guard to bust protester’s heads; which reveals the warped idea that the guard would do such a thing anyway.

Oh, and all of the talk about DEMOCRACY=NEGOTIATIONS!; which is vapid on it’s face, and ridiculous in that Walker and the Rethugs! ran on a platform of reigning in the power of the public employees unions to adversely influence the WI budget-the democratic debate took place already, and the people rendered their verdict in November. This phony call for “negotiations” is just the Democrats in the minority trying to still steer the legislatures agenda against the will of the WI electorate; is that supposedly “how democracy works”?

And for all of the talk of FREEDOM!, why isn’t anyone concerned about the freedom of the public employees to opt out of union membership?

A whole lot of civility there, eh?

  12. LBascom says:

Although the Tucson shootings were not linked to public discourse, she said, they “created a space for us to think about civil discourse.”

“If anyone should lead this conversation, it should be the University of Arizona,” Hay said.

See, it’s when I read stuff like this that makes me think I’m better off for skipping college.

  13. LBascom says:

I know I yelled fire in a crowded theater when there was no fire, but dammit, people were hurt and there’s no better place than that theater to gather top fire experts to discuss what to do in case of fire in a crowded theater.

  14. cranky-d says:

There are plenty of bullshit “studies” degrees out there already. I’m not sure one more makes a difference. It will be progressives preaching to progressives, and promoted by progressives. I think the market is already saturated.

  15. Jeff G. says:

OT: I’m sure Hannity is a nice guy. But listening to him on talk radio is like listening to 3 hours of nails being dragged along a chalkboard. NOBODY LOVES TEACHERS MORE THAN HANNITY! AND NOBODY LOVES FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICE MORE THAN HANNITY! WHO LOVES THEM MORE THAN TEACHERS, EVEN WHILE LOVING TEACHERS ABOVE ALL ELSE! Are they underpaid as a rule? YES! Blah blah blah GOP GOP GOP catchphrase catchphrase unholy alliance I LOVE TEACHERS BUT blah blah Great American AAAAAAAaaarggghhh.

  16. LBascom says:

Hannity is a bulldog. He will come up with three talking points a day, and repeat them in as many different forms as possible for the entire show. Very annoying. I haven’t listened to him for a couple of years, and when I did it was only ‘cuz he had good guests sometimes.

Still, the people that like him are generally on our side, so I don’t say much about him.

  17. Abe Froman says:

I used to listen to Hannity on occasion when he was only on in NY. I’d put up with him because he had good guests, but given all the options out their now I’d rather jab an ice pick through my ear than listen to that dope.

  18. Jeff G. says:

I was just thinking that, L. He gets good guests, and he means well.

I suppose he serves his purpose. But yeah, it’s the catchphrase repetition that irks me, I think. Plus, it’s obvious that he’s reading things half the time that he’s trying to make sound like he’s speaking unscripted.

  19. Entropy says:

Are they underpaid as a rule? YES!

    Hell no.

  20. cranky-d says:

It seems that if teachers manage to stick around a few years past their “break-in” period then end up doing pretty darn well, especially considering the abilities and education they need to possess.

  21. serr8d says:

Sean used to do sit-ins for Rush years ago, well enough to have earned his own show, but now he’s sandwiched between Rush and Levin and isn’t very …well let’s just say that I miss Rush and Hannity on most days, but hate it when I miss Levin. For a damned lawyer, he’s pretty good.

  22. davisbr says:

    Succinctly put.

  23. Slartibartfast says:

I stopped listening to Hannity several years ago. I find most talk radio annoyingly condescending, or annoyingly preachy.

And I don’t know who wrote into FCC regs that talk-show hosts had to have the most ridiculously inflated egos. Honestly, sometimes I yearn for the days when Glenn Beck was consciously over-the-top, when he wasn’t apologizing for being a reformed something-or-other and hence unworthy to be on the air at all.

Maybe I’m remembering that part wrong, but Beck was, once upon a time, a very different personality on the radio.

Don’t even get me started on Michael Savage.

  24. stinkylegs says:

I just get bored listening to Hannity. And how does he know all those people are really great Americans? But I do loves me some Rush and Levin (except when he’s hating on Glenn, which he seems to have eased up on).

  25. McGehee says:

The first time I heard Hannity he was sitting in for Rush. I emailed Rush and told him this guy isn’t up to doing radio.

Nor TV either, I’ve since decided.

  26. zino3 says:

    MADEILINE ALBRIGHT???!!!

Jesus, Jeff. I couldn’t even hold that barf in my mouth for more than two seconds when I read that. I have to go change my shoes now.

It’s all for the “children!” And the “children” are our leaders…funny how that works out, huh?

    Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…..

  27. zino3 says:

    Oh.

And as far as Hannity goes, he reminds me of the kid in high school who would pick the stall without a door on it to take a dump.

I don’t dislike him, but too often he veers into NewsMax territory.

It’s hilarious to hear Mr. Goody Two-shoes tak about what a badboy he was.

Like swiping a fingerful of icing off a cake is serious business.

  28. guinsPen says:

Former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush will serve as honorary chairmen of a new center at the University of Arizona that will focus on civility in political debate, university officials will announce Monday.

The National Institute for Civil Discourse – a nonpartisan center for debate, research, education and policy about civility in public discourse – will open Monday in Tucson. It was created in the aftermath of the Jan. 8 shootings in the city where six people were killed and 13 injured, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

Former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor and former Senate majority leader Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.) will serve as honorary co-chairmen. Board members will include former secretary of state Madeleine K. Albright; Kenneth M. Duberstein, chief of staff to President Ronald Reagan; Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren; Trey Grayson, director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics; and former representative Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.).

“This institute is the right people in the right place at the right time,” said Fred DuVal, vice chairman of the Arizona Board of Regents and former co-chairman of Giffords’s finance committee.

National Institute for Civil Discourse to open at University of Arizona

Damn, I’m definitely gonna need the remedial courses offered there.

Here. some music for ’em. Good luck with that.

  32. Old Texas Turkey says:

Lets say this much. If you are depending on Hannity or Gateway Pundit as intellectual backing in an argument, you’ve lost. They are the lowest common denominator. I’ve listened to weak arguments run over Hannity if it wasn’t in his talking points wheelhouse that day.

Malkin and Coulter are attack dogs as well, but to their credit, they come loaded for big game.

The only reason to watch Hannity is to compare his mellon with that of Fred Flintstone. That only takes a couple of minutes.

  33. Blake says:

    OTT,

Michelle Malkin has an outstanding track record of spotting bullshit and calling bullshit bullshit.

Malkin used to grate on me until I realized she damn well knows what she is talking about.
