“Ditching unwritten rules for freshmen, Paul does it his way”

— Which, that’s not very helpful, I don’t think.

I mean, that’s what we have Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin for, right? To keep the fringe purists distracted with shiny sequined dresses while the pragmatists do the adult work of figuring out ways both parties can benefit — while selling expansionist programs and ever-increasing entitlement spending to the voters in the feel-good language of reform?

Compromise. It doesn’t have to be a dirty word, people!

Daniels is a squishy RINO that really hearts government controlled healthcare and here is how he wants to control your lives because he is a statist compromising prolly socialist at heart.

  2. Bob Reed says:

Half a trillion off the top sounds like a nice start-for this year at least.

  3. JD says:

Mitch Daniels would be willing to compromise and increase spending by only 500 billion instead of 1 trillion. He is helpful.

  4. Obstreperous Infidel says:

“The smart move is to stay quiet for a while until you figure out our footing, to pick out a few issues and carve out an issue of expertise,” said a Republican strategist.

The quote missed a couple of adjectives for the “Republican strategist”. I would suggest, “unprincipled moron”. Yes, Republican strategist, your “smart” move has worked out so well over the years now hasn’t it. Unless creeping leviathan really is what “Republican strategist” craves?

As for Rand Paul…He’s his daddy with energy. Obviously, I’ve got a qualm with an issue or two with him, but overall, he’s just what the doctor ordered.

no no no mr JD. mitch would insist that if the federal government is going to grant itself a right to your body, they have to fuck you assways with a free-market condom.

Keeping the Medicare-Medicaid-SocialSecurity-ObamaCare entitlements complex in perpetuity is the key. Only government knows the way. Trust Obama. Otherwise, Granny gets it in the neck.

    “Hello, Bitches! Taste my blade!”

    I like it.

  9. Obstreperous Infidel says:

And if they ever did manage to kill his dad, he could go the Inigo Montoya route…

Hello, my name is Rand Paul. You killed my father. Prepare to die…

  10. geoffb says:

I have seen, not here, objections to the $500 billion cuts that even at that level it is only 1/3 to 1/2 of the deficit so why bother?

The $500 billion has two separate effects upon the economy. There is the effect of taxing the present private sector or the future private sector with borrowing which imposes a drag on economic activity. That is the effect that is most obvious.

There is another cost to that $500 billion. One which would show up quite clearly if the government still taxed and borrowed the same amount as they do but took the $500 billion and just held a bonfire with it.

If the taxing of the $500 billion is seen as an anchor holding back the ship of the economy then what is done when the government actually spends it, the things Rand Paul wants to cut out, should be viewed as the anchor chain being tangled around the propellers. That tangle does much more damage than the taxing does. In that respect there is a multiplier effect to government spending, a negative one.

Sweet Lord, how bad is it that $500 billion is deemed so trivial a savings to generate a response of “why bother”?

I admit that I’ve been desensitized to the numbers being bandied-about these days with respect to the federal fiscal situation, but $500 B is half a trillion. That’s about $1500 per citizen of the United States.

    Yes, please, bother.

    Keep it up.

  13. Joe says:

Rand Paul has broken with tradition by eschewing the unwritten rules for freshman senators: Keep a low profile, learn the chamber’s arcane procedures and cozy up to senior colleagues.

So what exactly is “cozy up to senior colleagues” and does it involve trips to the Senate cloakroom? NTTAWWT

  14. LTC John says:

Real fun would be seeing the Dems herded into a binary choice pen – Rand Paul’s solution or Paul Ryan’s…

What? I can dream can I not?

  15. Old Texas Turkey says:

Well McConnel did endorse Rand’s primary rival for the Senate seat. So Mitch shouldn’t be surprised if he is on the recieving end of the finger.

  16. Entropy says:

Paul’s most significant opposition came from republicans.

  17. Obstreperous Infidel says:

Just like his Dad, entropy. When you’re pissing the statists off on both sides of the aisle, you’re doing something right.

  18. Jeff G. says:

Paul’s most significant opposition came from republicans.

Impossible. They are all staunch and want nothing more than to slash government. They have heard the TEA Party message! I know, because they told me so.

  19. Entropy says:

    The deuce you say!

Well that will teach me to rely on a shoddy, do-it-yourself interpretation of current events cobbled together for free by a complete amateur. You get what you pay for!

From now on I will get all my opinions from approved sources of credentialed, expert opinion, such as the august New York Times and whatnot.

  20. motionview says:

They have heard the TEA Party message
    And their response: Get real

  21. Entropy says:

For clarity’s sake I was referencing myself as the complete amateur.

Not that Jeff doesn’t qualify. I have it on high authority that not only are his opinions lacking in any editorial oversight whatsoever, but have a habit of being rather unhelpful to boot.

  22. Squid says:

“He’s an institution in Washington, DC. Over the years, few senators have garnered more respect on Capitol Hill than Indiana’s Richard Lugar . He’s been a fixture in the Senate since 1977; seemingly unbeatable at the ballot box.”

I think I see the problem here. He’s been on Capitol Hill for so long that he thinks the respect of other people on Capitol Hill is worth something! Poor sucker.

Methinks Mr. Lugar wouldn’t know real if it hit him on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper.

  23. JD says:

    Lugar is lousy.

  24. McGehee says:

    Lugar is “not helpful.”

    Heh.

  25. Slartibartfast says:

I’ve never really liked Luger, myself. The tan, the long blonde hair, the bodybuilder physique, the suplex…just not my idea of wrestling, really.
