Strange Bedfellows [Dan Collins; UPDATE]

At the same time, the CIA has denied a request by former Vice President Dick Cheney to declassify documents that he said would show the harsh interrogations were effective. The agency isn’t permitted to declassify documents that are the subject of pending lawsuits, it said.

Human-rights groups have brought a lawsuit demanding release of the documents. Those groups said Thursday that their lawsuit shouldn’t stand in the way of making the information public.

UPDATE: Amazing. Krauthammer, confined to wheelchair, nevertheless deftly trampolines on Nan’s face.

If we are going to have this debate, have the debate. I disagree about EIT, but Cheney is right to bring the argument back to the Democrats. Pelosi and her fellow Democrats are hypocrite liars. And Andrew Sullivan and his cohorts calling for war crime prosecutions are frankly modern versions of the lunatics of Salem.

  2. ThomasD says:

Maybe that ‘human rights’ group could have written a letter first, kinda like Cheney, before they went all litigant.

Seems like the best thing to do would be withdraw the suit, assuming they really are interested in human rights.

  3. geoffb says:

Let’s see if I get this right. They can’t declassify the papers, because they are being sued, to declassify the papers.

I can’t pay my mortgage, I can tell my wife, because the bank is threatening to foreclose because I haven’t paid my mortgage.

If this is a workable legal reason it could be very helpful. On the other rational hand, this is an “intelligence” agency? WTF.

Take the poor, innocent denizens of Gitmo’s blackest black hole, fly them up to Washington. Line them up, kneeling and blindfolded, on the National Mall and have a hooded executioner walk down the line shooting them in the back of the head. Televised. Live.

Hey, it’s what Che would do!

Come to think of it, we could have them wearing Che t-shirts…

  5. bigbooner says:

Is the ACLU in on this? Because they are all over the photos that they want released. Remind me, what does the “A” stand for in ACLU? Do they actually have a dog in this fight?

  6. Jeffersonian says:

You can probably get a good deal on them in bulk at a kiosk outside Gitmo. Then again, there are probably more of them being worn in DC these days.

  7. Jeffersonian says:

Oh, and is anyone else loving seeing the walls close in on Comrade Nan? That they are the very walls she erected makes me that much more gleeful.

    No, it’s the CIA.

  9. SBP says:

I think Granny Botox is learning the hard way that you don’t fuck with the CIA.

  10. LTC John says:

Speaker would have been best served by letting the thing drop… what if the CIA has the fellow who briefed her trot and and say – hey, ’twas me and I said it right to her face. What would she do at that point? It is one thing to flail away at the nameless, faceless ‘CIA’ – but if some GS-15 is standing there …

It is one thing to flail away at the nameless, faceless ‘CIA’ – but if some GS-15 is standing there . . .

That would be a sputtering meltdown worth recording and saving for posterity.

  12. geoffb says:

I suspect she would continue with the bit that they lied to her but personalize it to the GS-15 this time. “You lied, I cried”.

  13. TheGeezer says:

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if, while on camera contradicting herself, her uterus prolapsed?

The metaphorical Pinocchiosities would be hysterical!

(I’m sorry, I’m just imitating liberal dinner party humor.)

  14. BJT-FREE! says:

She’s going to be icing those hematomas for days after that pummeling that Krauthammer gave her. The Graham Greene quote was a classic:

“I prefer the truth: It’s easier to memorize.”

    OW!

  15. BJT-FREE! says:

Wow! The only thing that came to mind as I watched Pelosi jerk and twitch through that press conference was Jackie Gleason:

    HAMANA … HAMANA … HAMANA … HAMANA …

  16. Sdferr says:

So now National Nanny Nan has a new story. “I didn’t mean the CIA lied to me, you are confused… I love the CIA… see, I meant the Bush Administration lied to me… get it?”

Oh, well then, that’s ok Nanny Nan, old girl! We can all get on board with the Bush-hate. All’s well, ‘cept, next time, don’t leave us hanging, having to badmouth the CIA all night, will ya? Just clear it up before the day’s over so we don’t all look like idiots trying to backfill your “CIA lies” story. M’kay?

  17. Sdferr says:

For the record, a link to a transcript of Pelosi’s press conference of 5/14/2009.

  18. SBP says:

You know, a sufficiently paranoid individual might start wondering if O! is pulling a Trotsky on Granny Botox.

  19. Sdferr says:

How do you mean a Trotsky SBP?

  20. Swen Swenson says:

Liar or fool? Pelosi opts for “fool”, now claiming that Bush and the CIA duped congress. Gotta love it when a politician’s defense against accusations of being a politically-motivated lying asshat is “I’m such an idiot! I was duped!!”

‘Course I’d argue that it’s not an either/or situation. Pelosi is quite clearly a liar and a fool.

  21. SBP says:

I mean that if you’re operating under the assumption of a permanent Fascist Democratic majority, the most dangerous challengers will necessarily be the other powerful members of your own party.

    Cui bono?
