You Have the Right to Your Disgruntlement [Dan Collins]

Or maybe, it’s like a gruntitlement:

The massive recovery package has stirred consternation among Republicans who say their ideas are not being adequately considered. But Democrats have a comfortable majority in the House and stressed that fact in a talk with reporters.

“If there is somebody who is disgruntled, so be it. But we will have an overwhelming vote,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. She and more than a half-dozen other Democrats touted the bill and chided Republicans for pushing what they called the kind of failed policies that led to the economic crisis.

I think it might be time for a Million Pig March on Washington.

Save us, Algore!

    House Passes $819B Stimulus Package
President Obama’s plan to revive the economy cleared its first hurdle when House members passed their version Wednesday on an $819 billion stimulus package.

    FOXNews.com

    Wednesday, January 28, 2009

The House of Representatives approved an $819 billion economic stimulus package Wednesday that President Obama has said is necessary to revive the economy.

The final vote was 244-188, mostly along party lines as expected.

A year from now, dems will scurrying like rats to get away from it. Don’t let them.

  23. Comment by John Cheshire on 1/28 @ 6:22 pm #

Pelosi can spew her BS all she wants but I think that a majority of Americans are concerned about what is in the package. We are only a few short months removed from the TARP bill when Bush was saying pretty much the same thing as O! is saying now, “Don’t worry about what is in it, just pass it”. However, we have since learned that the TARP, which was designed to get credit moving again, has done nothing of the sort.

Obama won by getting people who would otherwise not pay any attention to politics to pay attention. The downside for the dems is that those folks are, well, paying attention. The negative press surrounding TARP has only heightened people’s awareness. Pelosi also needs to consider that while folks were unhappy with Bush, they were more unhappy with the Congress she leads. Much of it stemming from unproductive and childish behavior like today’s spectacle.

  24. Comment by Sdferr on 1/28 @ 6:27 pm #

the TARP, which was designed to get credit moving again

I’m not so sure that is the story John, with all due respect. Rather I think the idea was finally settled as recapitalization to prevent the immediate collapse of the greater part of the banking sector. And it seems that it worked. I know the story Paulson was telling changed in a matter of a couple of weeks, but that change was due to the utter futility of his initial plan, which to put it simply, stunk because they couldn’t make it work fast enough.

“A year from now, dems will scurrying like rats to get away from it. Don’t let them.”

I think that the election has given the dems a false sense of security. They believe that people blame Bush for the financial meltdown because of his policies. Some do but I think that most knew the real cause but wanted to provide cover for Obama so he could be elected. I think most blame Bush simply because he was in charge. As they say, “The buck stops here”. Myself, I blame Bush for seeing it coming and not doing enough to stop it.

I think the dems are going to get a bit of a nasty shock when the ownership of this POS gets placed right at their feet.

    Comment by Sdferr on 1/28 @ 6:27 pm #

The greater point I was making, poorly, was the media and even politicians framed it as a bill to get credit moving again. True or not, the public is noticing that it has not lived up to the framing. Even more important are some of the selective but highly publicized stories about companies abusing the TARP funds or not being able to tell us where the money has gone. All this leads to a public that is very skeptical of this current bill.

I mean the damn thing is over 600 pages long. I bet not one legislator has read the whole thing and I bet there are more people out there thinking the same thing. Why are they voting for something they barely know about?

I could be wrong…that is why I come here to discuss.

‘Cause yous guys are wicked smaht.

  35. Comment by Sticky B on 1/28 @ 7:00 pm #

I think the dems are going to get a bit of a nasty shock when the ownership of this POS gets placed right at their feet.

I think you are way underestimating the ability of the press to cover for their boy. They got this boy elected and they aren’t about to start reporting the truth now if it might shine a bad light on their boy. Remember a couple of years ago when 4.8% unemployment and 30sumpn straight quarters of growth was the worst economy since Hoover? 12.5% unemployment and 6 straight quarters of negative growth will be the fuckin’ shiznet by this time next year. I might be a little overly suspicious of the MSM. But then again, I might not.

  36. Comment by Sdferr on 1/28 @ 7:04 pm #

Yes, you are totally right about the framing thing John C, totally. And people didn’t understand it (how could they, the people pushing it didn’t understand it either! And truth be told, probably still don’t, since the problem is way outside human ken.) And they framed it in the same “We’ve got to hurry up” mode that they’re doing again right now, when the better thing would be to slow the fuck down and think, or just not do anything, as Russ Roberts quipped in his title “Don’t just do something, Stand there!”
