Sympathy for the Blago [Dan Collins]

To Frank Rich of the New York Times (D-Bankrupt), he’s a timely whipping boy. I like my whipping boys to be timely. But he’s getting two cheers from Rich, because his principal significance is that he offers an opportunity to regurgitate a bunch of venom about the eeeeeeevil Booooooosh Regime.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Chuckie?

Charity begins–and ends–at home.

Time for corrupt Chicago pols trading cards.

Real teenagers are stupid, dreary, garish and gross, which is why I write about TV.

I think I’ve figured out the difference between the political parties. Both freely spend money they don’t have. Both are corrupt. The ones with “R” after their names go to jail when they get caught.

Also, thorie, hows that “local” paper of yours these days. The Blago story is getting ink in LA, Washington DC, Boston, NYC, and Atlanta.

But, I’m sure the Samford, FL Dispatch will get around to eventually.

  9. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Techie, I thought it was parsnip who was using his “local paper” as evidence that the Blago story had gone away. Or was thor making that claim, too?

  10. Revvy says:

… that last link really annoys me. Mostly because I AM a teen, and the attitude that woman has about us is just… UGH.

It’s the reason why I don’t try to strike up conversations with most adults outside my parents – whenever I try to actually start a real conversation (rather than just politely nodding and smiling), I get the ‘Oh my God!! It speaks!!’ look. Really now.

I’ve been able to hold a mature, adult conversation – about anything from politics to office work to movies – since I was 15. Give the teens at least the benefit of the doubt, you might find they have something interesting to say.

  11. Techie says:

Dunno, could be, I try to avoid expending too much mental energy keeping all the trolls straight.

The venom toward the Bush Regime is not inappropriate as the the larger and more costly Culture of Sorruption.

“Fitzgerald was not pleased. “It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals,” he said at the time.

Not in the Bush era, man. Though the president had earlier vowed to fire anyone involved in leaking the classified identity of a C.I.A. officer, Valerie Plame Wilson — the act Libby tried to cover up by committing perjury — both Libby and his collaborator in leaking, Karl Rove, remained in place.

Accountability wasn’t remotely on Bush’s mind. If anything, he was more likely to reward malfeasance and incompetence, as exemplified by his gifting of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to George Tenet, L. Paul Bremer and Gen. Tommy Franks, three of the most culpable stooges of the Iraq fiasco.”

All corruption roads lead to Iraq.

I’ve been lurking over at several of the “feminist” sites…not only is the Blago affair conspicuous by its complete absence of coverage, the projection that the non-left is both racist –due to Obama’s not getting to move into Blair House early — and homophobe — more Prop 8 stuff — are the only nails these sacks of hammers want to pound.

That statement would make a lot more sense if Democrats didn’t pass nearly every bill associated with Roosevelt’s policies and if the Dems didn’t have a large majorities in both houses at the time. It took a couple of Jewish chicken merchants (that voted for Roosevelt, by the way) to start to put the brakes on FDR’s haphazard social experimentation. Thanks for demonstrating your ignorance of history again, sugartits.

  26. Techie says:

Um, does Cleo know that the Democratic Party had filibuster proof majorities in both Houses for most of FDR’s Presidency?

    Right?

  27. Techie says:

Actually, I take that back. The Democratic Party controlled BOTH Houses of Congress for the ENTIRETY of FDR’s 4 terms. Republicans didn’t even must the number required for a filibuster until the 1940 elections and between 1933 and 1935 (in the Senate).

Cleo, this is where you spout “Redumblicans!” and claim victory.

  28. Semanticleo says:

    SPiehole;

Semantics, semantics. The ‘lengthening’ of the Great Depression
has as much to do with the survival of those with the least protections (working class poor) as it does with the general economy…http://newdeal.feri.org/survey/40b14.htm

“THE REPUBLICAN OFFENSIVE IS DIRECTED NOT AT THE SOCIAL objectives of the New Deal but at the economic measures by which the Roosevelt Administration has wooed recovery. Republicans refuse to admit that they are any less interested in social welfare than the adherents of the New Deal. This is clearly expressed by the program committee:

Among most Americans, regardless of party, there is not much difference of opinion about the social goals towards which, as a people, we want to move. . . . That Americans unemployed, through no fault of their own, should be shielded from suffering and their self-respect kept alive pending their return to normal employment is an axiom that no leadership, worthy of the confidence of the nation, will dispute. That the old, the sick, and all those who, handicapped by forces over which they can exert no control, are unable to provide for themselves, must be safeguarded by society, is a long and almost universally acknowledged principle.

    #
Such generalities in themselves may mean much or little. In this instance, however, they are supported by the specific declarations of the program committee and the candidates. There are, it is true, in the Republican ranks some diehards who hate the New Deal with such virulence that they would undo everything which has been done in the last seven years. They are, however,, relatively few in number and notably less vociferous than in 1936. They will have, if the program committee and the candidates mirror party opinion, little influence in its councils.

    #
The great majority of Republicans are convinced that the country has been irrevocably committed to the essentials of the social program or the New Deal. It is impossible to tell how much of this attitude is due to genuine social enthusiasm, how much to regretful recognition of the inevitable. Most human conduct is a compound of free will and social compulsion.

    #
The spearhead of the Republican attack is aimed at the spending, borrowing, taxing, and business regulating policies of the Roosevelt Administration. It vigorously assaults the New Deal position that the country has entered period of “mature” economy in which the opportunities for private investment and, consequently, employment in private industry will be much less than in the past. The program committee devotes a long section of its report to what it calls New Deal defeatism. It finds “that the private economy of America has not come to a dead end . . . but is crowded with possibilities of fruitful growth and profitable expansion.” Candidate Dewey has made the defeatist attitude of the New Deal the theme of several speeches. He denies categorically and with evidential detail that “the American people are finished. America,” he says, “is at the morning of its destiny.”

Republican opposition is much the same today with the vociferous
opposition to bridge loans to the Big Three. Unions are the target just as they were when Roosevelt made Collective Bargaining
a norm instead of an anomaly.

    “let them eat cake”

  29. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Semantics, semantics.

Translation: You lied. Poorly. You got caught.

Now declare victory and run away, like a good little screechbot.

  30. Semanticleo says:

    Techie;

And the Redumblicans are once again, in the minority for good reasons. But that doesn’t prevent them from taking a dump in the recovery punch.

  31. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

. There are, it is true, in the Republican ranks some diehards who hate the New Deal with such virulence that they would undo everything which has been done in the last seven years

Which means what, liebot, given that the Dems had a filibuster-proof majority?

    Oh, right: you’re stupid.

  32. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Hey, Semen: here’s a novel idea. How about you post something that’s marginally on-topic?

How about starting with an explanation of why Obama lied to the press about being in contact with Blagojevich?

  33. Pablo says:

Republican opposition is much the same today with the vociferous
opposition to bridge loans to the Big Three.

Democrats doing as they damned well pleased extended the depression by 7 years. The Republicans did nothing but talk, having no power to obstruct. Your comparison is, as usual, moronic.

    Semantics, semantics.

    Oh, now that’s funny.

  34. B Moe says:

So what exactly do you disagree with here, ‘cleo? Are you seriously going to argue now that it was a “mature” economy with no room for growth?

    Seriously?

It is one thing to be pig-headed about current events, but to try to use something this ridiculous as evidence defies fucking belief.

See, you just THOUGHT that this thread was on the on-going Illinois Gov. scandal, but in actuality, it’s about misconceptions with the political environments of the mid-30s. They were just kind enough to correct us.

We owe the trolls more than we can ever know.

It was your fucking quote, pinhead. I focused on the part I wanted to address. The only vacuum around here is between your fucking ears.

What you referred to was the ‘official’ line, which, as you may know, leaves a few key issues exempted.

Like what? The official line of the Democrats pushing the New Deal was the economy was “mature”, hence stagnant. Their position was freeing up money for the private sector wouldn’t work because no more growth could be expected, which in hindsight I would say has been proven rather spectacularly wrong.

That is from your quote, if you have other material that says other wise, then bring it.

  51. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

How about Obama intentionally lying to the press?

    Semen? Yo, Seeeeeemen!

Pinhead, eh? That’s rich coming from a motorhead.

See if you can ignore this again….

Let me answer for you: the same way they do today………

No, let’s see if you can ignore this again:

Why did Obama deliberately lie to the press?

Nice duck and twist – so Blagojevich negotiating the appointment of a US senator and what was offered to him by whom brings up a reference to the Great Depression, which had nothing to do with the sale of a senate seat. The Great Depression had even less to do with the Teapot Dome scandal some years prior, which has even the favor of slight connection due to both being scandals.

Nice beclowning, Cleo – here’s your rubber nose.

    typical totalitarian Leftist

Remember how you then got schooled? I’ll remind you of that too. Here.

Now you’re clinging to some work relief canard that is both indecipherable and irrelevant. No one gives a fuck. You could pitch that across the intertubes and you’re not going to make a sale anywhere. So, let’s get back to business.

Any here old enough to remember when payroll taxes were 1-2%?
A direct result of the Budget Deficits from VooDoo Economics, which required borrowing from SS to keep checks going to recipients, it now sits at about 12%.

You know, the tax increase that ISN’T a definitive tax increase?

  236. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Hey, could it be that he thinks he’s being clever?

Well, he could be that delusional.

Or maybe he just gets off on public humiliation.

  237. Pablo says:

Is that all you guys got?

This is just today’s offering. There’s a long litany already discussed that I don’t need to detail because you could Google it, unless you’re a moron. Tomorrow, there will be something else because your guy has a tin ear and a bad habit.

    Now, why is He lying?

  238. N. O'Brain says:

“Or maybe he just gets off on public humiliation.”

    I call ’em “masochist trolls”

They read the insults posted in response to the inane drivel they write and sit in front of the computer playing “yankee-my-wankee”.

Maybe that’s why the has the phrase “seman” in his username.

Now, why did Obama lie to the press?

  239. N. O'Brain says:

    “why HE has”

  240. Semanticleo says:

Kevin Drum; “Still Fools for Scandal”

.Peter Baker writes today that Barack Obama and his team have learned a lesson from the scandal-driven “moral jihad” of the Clinton presidency:

Even though Mr. Obama had no known personal involvement, the Clinton veterans understood that was only part of the issue. They had Mr. Obama publicly declare he had never spoken with Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich about the Senate appointment. They imposed a cone of silence on colleagues so they would not make a remark that could come back to haunt them. And they ordered an internal inquiry to document any contacts with the governor’s advisers.

Republicans were ready to pounce, rushing out statements linking Mr. Obama to Mr. Blagojevich within an hour or so after the governor’s arrest was reported. They too knew the script and that any opening must be exploited. Politics in this hyperpartisan age, after all, is the ultimate contact sport.

  241. Semanticleo says:

    ‘Moral Jihad’, indeed……………

All this newly emerging concern about, lies….it’s so out of character.

  242. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

They had Mr. Obama publicly declare he had never spoken with Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich about the Senate appointment.

He didn’t say “never spoken”. He said “had no contact with the Governor or his office”.

    Which was a lie.

Why did he do that, semen?

  243. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

All this newly emerging concern about, lies

    Why did Obama lie, semen?

    Going to answer?

  244. B Moe says:

They had Mr. Obama publicly declare he had never spoken with Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich about the Senate appointment. … And they ordered an internal inquiry to document any contacts with the governor’s advisers.

So he lied because the Clinton’s told him to?

  245. Semanticleo says:

    The 16 famous words….

“The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”

    LIAR !!!!

  246. Semanticleo says:

Now that’s an epic lie. Wanna compare?

  247. Semanticleo says:

How ’bout that national Sales Tax?

  248. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

If you want to know what I consider the most likely reason for the lie, it’s that he panicked.

He panicked, and came up with a spur-of-the-moment excuse that was about as transparently false as a five year old’s “Nothin'” response to a parental inquiry after the parent hears a loud crash.

  249. bmeuppls says:

    Hillary told me to!!!!eleventy!

New excuse for the Obama administration.

The grownups call for a timeout for the whole damn bunch.

  250. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

“The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”

    Yawn.

Now, why did Obama lie, semen?

  251. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

How ’bout that national Sales Tax?

How ’bout telling us why Obama lied?

    Why did Obama lie, semen?

    Going to answer?

    Dew yu leak Engrish!

  253. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Dew yu leak Engrish!

Going to explain why Obama lied, thor?

  254. thor says:

  255. cranky-d says:

    So if I know BMoe thinks NoBrain is fucking his mommy, and I know it’s mot true, but say;

‘BMoe has learned NoBrain is fucking his mother’, aren’t I a LIAR!!!

  257. “The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”

    that’s not a lie.

The Butler report’s conclusion that British intelligence was “credible” clearly doesn’t square with what US intelligence now believes. But these new reports show Bush had plenty of reason to believe what he said, even if British intelligence is eventually shown to be mistaken.

now, why did Obama lie to the press?

  258. Semanticleo says:

“I haven’t seen one manage to shine yet.’

I dunno. Seems yer pretty good at shinin’ yer turds.

  259. bmeuppls says:

    Why did Obama lie?

    Ditto.

    Megaditto.

  260. N. O'Brain says:

“The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in the 1990s that Saddam Hussein had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb. The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.”

-President Bush in the State of the Union address January 28, 2003

    seman is the liar, now.

So, why did Obama lie to the press?

  261. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Shoe fly shoe!

Funny, that doesn’t look like an answer to “Why did Obama lie to the press?”

I’m just not gettting the “context”, I guess.

    Try harder, thor.

  262. N. O'Brain says:

    “Try harder, thor.”

    thor never gets hard.

  263. dre says:

Due to gravity empty suits do lie.

  264. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Seems yer pretty good at shinin’ yer turds.

Semen has given up on trying to deflect, and has switched to grade-school insults.

    Not going to work, Semen.

Why did Obama lie to the press?

  265. B Moe says:

How ’bout that national Sales Tax?

Go read the info at the link I gave you, then post your critique at the Pub and I will be happy to discuss it with you, but from your initial response it is obvious you haven’t read past the title.

  266. Semanticleo says:

Yeah, yeah. Bush was lawyered up for that carefully parsed statement.

Plausible Denialism; Basic principle of lying. Stay as close to the truth as you can for maximum cover.

“What is to be learned from these findings? Not necessarily that Mr. Bush and his top aides are innocent of distorting the facts on Iraq. As we have said, we believe the record shows that they sometimes exaggerated intelligence reports that were themselves flawed.”

  267. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Yeah, yeah. Bush was lawyered up for that carefully parsed statement.

    How nice.

Now, why did Obama lie to the press?

  268. B Moe says:

Plausible Denialism; Basic principle of lying. Stay as close to the truth as you can for maximum cover.

That is what the Clintonistas are teaching Obama? According to you and Drum?

  269. happyfeet says:

People are free what weren’t, Semanticleo person. That Baracky and his willfully deluded dirty socialist tribe can’t appreciate that doesn’t augur well I don’t think. We’re in big trouble.

  270. B Moe says:

Obama is lying because even if they didn’t outright break the law they behaved poorly, and it is going to reflect badly on him. He isn’t smart enough to know how to minimize his losses, and it’s making him look even worse.

  271. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

That is what the Clintonistas are teaching Obama?

A Clinton would have never come up with a clumsy lie like that one.

Say what you will about him, but Bill is a master of the literally-true-yet-totally-misleading statement.

I’ll bet he winced when he saw Obama’s performance.

  272. That is what the Clintonistas are teaching Obama?

they aren’t doing to good of a job. oh well. Then there was that time that Obama never said he would meet with the leaders of Iran without preconditions.

    heh.

  273. Pablo says:

Yeah, yeah. Bush was lawyered up for that carefully parsed statement.

Uh, no. That is from a State of the Fucking Union address, which one does not lawyer up for.

Why is O! lying? And when do you expect he’ll lawyer up?

  274. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Breaking: Blago NOT planning to resign tomorrow.

  275. N. O'Brain says:

Yeah, “what the meaning of is is” is a classic.

Unlike Obama’s clumsy lies to the press.

Can anyone explain why he did that?

  276. sranky-lee says:

Breaking: Blago negotiating redumblican bail out.

  277. B Moe says:

“Not true — the Gov has no plans of resigning tomorrow,” Lucio Guerrero, a spokesman for Democrat Blagojevich, said today in an e-mailed statement.

Der’s been a liddel holdup in de, er, negoshe’ashuns.

  278. aw, maybe not so lawerly:

But what he said – that Iraq sought uranium – is just what both British and US intelligence were telling him at the time. So Bush may indeed have been misinformed, but that’s not the same as lying.

hind-sight is 20/20. Like when Obama realized that what he originally said about nobody having any contact with Blago about his senate replacement was kinda not really what happened.

  279. N. O'Brain says:

“Blagojevich Doesn’t Plan to Resign, Spokesman Says”

  282. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

  285. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

The legend lives on from the South Side on down
Of the man they call Barry Obama
    Campaign flash and bribery cash
Filled the news of December with drama.

To court with subpoenas for Blago and more
Mister Peter Fitzgerald, he brought ’em
The Lightworker True was a bone to be chewed
When his buddies, the grand jury caught ’em

Barry was the pride of the Progressive side
Coming back from vote theft in Wisconsin
As the candidates go he was Greener than most
So the hippies all sucked on his johnson.

They were pocketing bribes from a few aldermen
When they left fully cashed-up for DC
Later that night came the FBI
With warrants for Blago’s big crime spree.

When payoff time came, Blago held out his hand
Saying fuckers this thing is golden
At 7PM the indictments came in
Barry said “Rod, your nads are swollen”.

The tap on the wires made a tattletale sound
    Axelrod started the stalling
But Emanuel knew, and Obama did, too,
T’was the men with the handcuffs come calling.

The Hope came late, the inauguration had to wait
The indictments came out in torrents
When January came it brought mis’ry and pain
In the form of a federal warrant.

The Tribune wired in they saw charges coming in
And the Lightworker cried for his mama
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Barry Obama.

  286. Semanticleo says:

Now, why did Obama lie to the press?

  288. Semanticleo says:

  289. Pablo says:

Why did Obama lie to the press?

  299. All this newly emerging concern about, lies….it’s so out of character.

not so much, but then you haven’t yet been able to provide an example.

so, that Obama… kinda changes his story a lot doesn’t he? I wonder if you could tell us why that is?

  300. Semanticleo says:

“I’m going to set the DVR now.”

    Good.

Now please tell me why you are suddenly concerned about POTUS lies?

  301. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Why did Obama lie, semen?

  302. you mean PEOTUS. sorta, the electoral college hasn’t met yet…

  303. Semanticleo says:

  305. I suppose they’re character flawed as well. must be tough being the only one with “character”.

  306. uh, factcheck.org disagrees.

really, just the facts in general. but then, you know stuff.

but not why Obama lied about contact with Blago.

  307. Pablo says:

Now please tell me why you are suddenly concerned about POTUS lies?

  309. Pablo says:

    Why?

  334. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Think it will last you 8 years?

Oh, this is only the beginning, snippy.

Now, why did Obama lie to the press?

And why do you think he’s going to last eight years if this is how he behaves before he even takes office?

  335. B Moe says:

Think it will last you 8 years?

I don’t think it will last more than four. This deep of shit and he hasn’t even taken office yet?

    Buncha stooopid rubes.

  342. parsnip says:

    It’s not a question, SBP, it’s a smear.

    Haha.

  343. B Moe says:

Bush gets shoes thrown at him the same time the world discovers Obamas feet of clay.

    Coincidence?

  344. Obama the Hopeychangey, the new political savior; the newest and bestest Democrat evah! The ONE!

    But,

Why has he (already) started to lie to the press, proving that all of his promises were just political flatulence as usual?

Is this his first lie? Or just the first lie the press has bothered to notice?

Four years of hopeychangey sameyness ahead.

Fuckin’ right that’d be weird, uhuhuh.

  349. guinsPen says:

C’mon thor, sing along with me now; Why, why, why-y-y-y-y, he lie O?

  350. Ric Locke says:

    Heh.

Obama, we are assured, had no contact with Blagojevich, the Governor of the State he represents.

A Senator who doesn’t chat occasionally with the Governor of the State he represents would be, well, the first word that comes to mind is irresponsible.

When the Senator is giving up his seat, the Governor of the State he represents will be important in deciding who will occupy it later — and the Senator has a definite interest in who that will be, out of political concerns if nothing else.

So he’s either lying (in the case where he did have such contact) or an irresponsible fuckhead (in the case where he did not.)

    Which is it?

And, for the record, insofar as the substantive issue is concerned, I don’t really give a damn. But it’s interesting, isn’t it, that he hasn’t even taken office — Hell, the Electoral College hasn’t confirmed his election yet — and we already have a case where something minor to the point of triviality generates a brouhaha.

    So: Liar or incompetent. Which?

    Regards,
    Ric

  354. Nan says:

I can tell you why he lied. It’s really very simple. He’s a product of the Chicago Democrat machine. This is what they do. They lie, they cheat, and when called on it, they throw somebody under the bus to take the blame (with cashy goodness as reward for taking the fall). That’s the change that’s coming; a machine with decades of experience, and the likes of which DC has never seen up close. That’s the change. I have no idea what the hopey part is.

  355. guinsPen says:

Like a shitty Chinese ceramic, plate, thor?

  357. thor says:

Yes, right about now our lame duck shoe-catcher-in-chief is probably bobbing on a Saudi Prince like Sarah Palin’s daughter on prom night. The Prince’s jacuzzi foams and bubbles while Bush bobbles and makes muffled animal sounds in the steamy chug.

  358. Ric Locke says:

    Interesting subjects, thor.

But not the one under discussion. The subject here is: why did Barack (His Holy and Glorious Name Be Praised) Obama tell a transparent lie to the Press?

I know you’re desperate to change the subject. Not buying.

Why did Obama lie? When either the truth or a somewhat more plausible lie would have served him better?

  361. SteveG says:

    Obama lied.
My guess is that somewhere around Christmas Eve, that Obama’s people dump all their information.
My other guess is that Blago is now solicting pay offs to stay quiet… probably from a pay phone outside a Dunkin Donuts he hopes isn’t bugged.
Blago could really hurt Obama if he talks. Not that Obama is dirty, but Blago is such a moron he’ll make it all worse every time he opens his mouth.

  364. Ric Locke says:

Look! Over there! It’s thor’s sock-puppet (different context)!

Not buying it. The subject under discussion is Barack (The Angels Sing Praise of His Glorious Name) Obama’s press conference, in which he either lied through his teeth or confessed incompetence. Other testimony confirms the “lie” hypothesis.

Why did Obama lie to the press, thor?

    Regards,

Wait, we already showed you that.

At this point, there is not a single poster or writer on this site that assigns ANY of you the benefit of the doubt or will give you the presumption of good faith. You are literally shrieking into the wind. Sorry that the O! isn’t Teh One Lightworker. We feel your pain, we really do.

Cheer up, B Moe. It won’t be nearly that repetitive and boring. They will alternate between “BOOOOOOOOOOSH!” and “RAAAAAAAACIST!”, with occasional forays into “HE’S A GOOD MAN WITH BAD ADVISORS!” and “HE’S NEW, GIVE HIM A CHANCE!”

What we ought to do is set up files for the four categories, and as things come up decide which category to assign to them. This one, clearly, is a Number Four.

  382. Sticky B says:

  383. Darleen says:

He missed. Twice. The President still has his jet pilot reflexes.

    So.

Why did Obama lie to the press?

  392. Ric Locke says:

#388 cranky-d: That’s just the problem. Barack (Choirs of Angels Sing Praises To His Glorious Name) Obama won the election. Emphasis on “won”. He gets the shiny trophy and the special jacket and the bonus from his sponsors, and everybody goes “Yay!” except the ones who bet on a different driver. Kewl.

Trouble is, what he won… is a job. He doesn’t get to go home and set the shiny new trophy on the shelf, arrange little high-intensity pinlights to bring out the glitter, and bask in the glow of his triumph. He now has to perform — and every indication is that he is, at best, woefully unprepared to do so, and very possibly incompetent. This is at least as evident to the trolls as it is to everybody else.

So what they have to do is extend the glow of triumph for as long as possible. alphie/parsnip will repeat, incessantly, that Obama won! Kewl! Semanticleo and thor will confidently assert that this is a repudiation of private capitalism, and also remind us that Obama Won! He de Man! He won! In this way they will delay as long as possible the horrid realization that not only will there be another race, Barack (Sing Hosannah In The Name of the Great and Good) Obama’s performance over the next little while will be a big part of the handicapping for it.

Just laugh. And stay on topic. Why did Obama lie, parsnip/alphie? The truth would not only have served him better in an absolute sense, we’ve already had several flat statements to the effect that it would have been accepted. If we assume that “Bush lied!” is accurate, at the very least he lied for a purpose (one you don’t like). What was the purpose behind Obama’s lie?

There are thousands of interesting topics, and not all of them attract the magpie obsessions of the Press.

This is one of them. Obama lied, in a situation where the lie was immediately exposed and where no visible purpose was served by the lie. Why did he do that?

He can say he misspoke because he was not informed about some of the contacts his team had made, which just makes him look like and idiot and incapable manager, or

He can tell the truth and admit he lied.

Now Obama on the other hand lied for what? Say what?

  445. Topsecretk9 says:

    Why did he lie?

    Neophyte or neck deep.

Anyway, I see the stars are aligning for a Fitz dump. Bush holds the keys and me thinks that Obama will be recalling how valuable that chit is. Bush, Obama? Obama is the chocolate Bush. Not quite peas but the pod will be familiar.

  446. daleyrocks says:

McCain needs Palin to bitch slap some sense back into him and have him ask the same question everybody but the trolls is asking here – Why did Obama lie.

  447. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

insist he was telling the truth bt some insane Clintonian word parsing.

As I noted above, he’s nowhere near Clinton caliber when it comes to that sort of thing.

The Kevin Drum attempt at deflection is that Obama said that he’d never “spoken” to Blago. Now that would’ve been Clinton-quality dissembling. What Obama said, though, that he had “no contact” with Blago. A blatant and provable lie.

If I exchange letters to someone, I am “in contact” with that person, even though the letters are delivered by a third party (in this case, the post office, in Obama’s case, Emanuel).

    So, why did Obama lie?

This will be one point where lefties start hating Fitz. Fitz’s habit of extra-judicial presser comments, he tried his case in the public saying way more than his assignment allows. NOW Blago knows it’s biz as usuall in Chicago and he’s not even close to being alone and he KNOWS the other side of the wiretapped conversations that Fitz did not release.

Blago actually has a LOT of leverage right now. And if I was advising him and he had ANY goods on high players and Rham and Obama he’s be dripping them out to “educate the public” so they new what they might be weighing. In other words, you want the public- future jury pool – to think that convicting Blago is convicting Obama and since Chicago is not likely to do that you have to equal the playing ground.

If Obama is involved – messiah almighty – do we validate this criminality?

So expect all kinds of drip, drip, leaks about Rham and Obama.

(is what I think will happen)

Dear Dairy, day 40, post Obama victory Republican Agony Watch: Their collective agony is severe, washing ashore in continuous waves of post-election depression. I remember when we used to banter in the mornings, JD, Alpp, Dan and me, like a foursome on the back nine playing a best ball scramble. No more. In the quiet hours (that’s what I like to call the morning) there’s never more than a water-cooler nod to the others existence as the r-wingered have grown too tired to fake it anymore. Their burn out feels awakening in a tent filled with hippies after a ecstasy-fueled 5-day Bonaroo music festival. Some are unable to fully lift their heads, others simply can’t summons the energy to type. The energetic smirking we-own-you clowning is gone and been replaced with frayed nerves, depression and intermittent states of total hopelessness.

The campaign’s never predicted ending, the full climax, if you will, many here never saw coming. Sympathetic figures of defeat? Not so much.

Their usual chest beating and tribal whelping is now slowed, predictable and feeble, weakened not only by their full defeat but from their long-crazy 8-year overdose of overconfidence.

    Until tomorrow.

  477. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Ah, I just love the smell of fresh coffee and roasted wingnuts in the morning.

    Liars lie.

  479. Ric Locke says:

Well, yeah, Major. A politician lied, ho hum. A Chicago politician wants to do pay-for-play. Snow fell in Chicago in December. Quelle sorprîse!

The surprising bits, in no particular order:
    1) No one seems to be denying that Obama lied. Even Obama himself is admitting it, in his own peculiar way.
    2) There’s no visible reason for the lie. Even if believed it wouldn’t accomplish anything Obama and/or his supporters want. In fact, if the statement were true or believed it would cast a very unfavorable light on his performance as Senator.
    3) There doesn’t seem to be any “spin” coming from the Usual Suspects. Yglesias doesn’t have a Talking Point designed to deflect the matter. That leaves the trolls operating in scattershot fashion, with each of them bringing his or her own peculiar <harrumph> talents to the table.
    4) To the extent there is a unified response, it consists of people who have obsessed to the point of mania over “lies” being cavalier and blithely dismissive of this one.
    5) The Press is actually covering it. We learn, this morning, of a maneuver designed to mitigate the worst of the effect, but it isn’t nearly enough to sink it. Nor is a particularly juicy distraction.

    ’tis a puzzle, no?

    Regards,
    Ric

That’s cool. You see, I have no time for sashal, so I can’t say that I love all people and I don’t have paisley bubbles shooting out of my ass. But I don’t take any more time than the random insult to consider him. If you’re laying awake at night hating George W, you’ve got a serious problem. I don’t defend him to you. George W is my kind of guy. I’m sticking.

I’m thinking Obama would have pissed his pants if someone threw a shoe at him. I don’t hate him though, I’ve got a life. But he’s not my kind of guy. He says one thing in an instant and then he needs the weekend to let the news cool down and formulate his explanation. He campaigned on failed George Bush policies, and now he’s fully entrenched in those policies. He comes from a cesspool, yet I’m supposed to believe he’s got no cess on him. Not buying it.

thor, you accused Karl of racism because he put the time in to deconstruct the Obama myth. You felt that Karl was just running on racism. Now you call sashal bright, because all he could do was write “presidunce”. That doesn’t make any sense my man.

Why did Obama lie to the press?

  504. thorichka says:

The essence of my many arguments against KK was his faux analysis was all a cloak meant to disguise his terminal buck-toothed hick woofing over Rev. Wright’s right to be angry and insane. White preachers are also often angry and insane therefore to become arrogantly fixated on a black preacher of the same stripe that that creates questions in itself. Is to preach about past racial transgressions in church go against the White Christian God?

So miffed was KK that a black dared to see things differently than him that he set about to use his boiling fury to impugn the one parishioner in Trinity seeking elected office that he knew, Barack Obama, in a oddly desperate attempt to put one man’s words into the mouth of another.

People see things differently. Fine people like Maj. John fight for our right to voice all our opinions from however we see the world. Freedom of speech’s end game is that people like you and me and Barack Obama might learn from listening to viewpoints of differing vantage. Yes, Jose Marti had the right. Yes, Aime Cesaire had the right. Yes, Rev. Wright has the right. If you believe them to be desperately wrong-headed fine, but don’t sit there and pretend anyone who reads or listens to others with different views is thereby guilty of association and conjoined thought. Fuck that. Too cheap. Too stupid. And I believe that mentality has a motive attached. When it comes to denying that a black man has a right to his perspective I call it as I see it, meaning it’s simple race-based bigotry. Rev. Wright not only has the right to speak but he – especially in his case as a former marine – has the right to a perspective entirely of his own making. One didn’t need to look too hard to find Barack Obama had an entirely different perspective than Rev. Wright, he wrote two books, after all, so to watch KK do his all-day everyday gymnastics as required to politically slime one man’s reputation by rote of association with another should and was questioned.

I was in the right, me thinks anyway.

And, we’re also free to criticize Teh One for sitting in a pew listening to that bullshit. Until we actually forbid him from sitting in that pew, we (including Karl) are completely w/in our rights.

  510. Mr. Pink says:

  511. Mr. Pink says:

They got up and cheered when they heard that, they responded to it in a positive way and there was no surprise upon hearing it. To believe O! sat there with freakin earmuffs on and was the only one in the church not cheering is retarded. You have to literally throw all common sense out the window to believe that. 530. alppuccino says:

Now, why did Obama lie to the press?

thor doesn’t speak for Obama. Only Obama speaks for Obama. There can only be one Obama at a time.

But it’s fun to speculate as to why he lied. I’m guessing it’s because he’s black.

Too simple? Well – if a slave could read and someone asked him if he could read, he would lie, because, though reading is fundamental, it was illegal for slaves to be literate. So imprinted on Obama is the feeling that, though he spoke with Blago, and it’s perfectly natural for the outgoing Senator to discuss his replacement, he wears the chains of prejudice, and he lied to avoid the cat-o-ninetails of presumed corruption. So though he was carried to the Oval Office on the slave-ship of political correctness, he will run the plantation from the slave-quarters of low expectations.

Either that or he just has trouble telling the truth.

  531. That’s nice, thorazine.

Now, about Obama’s untruthful statement …

  532. thorichka says:

Retreat redumblican soldiers to your White churches for prayer and consolation from Jesus, and to plot your r-wing liar-liar-lie revolution!

  534. Retreat redumblican soldiers to your White churches for prayer and consolation from Jesus, and to plot your r-wing liar-liar-lie revolution!

Are you retarded? Didn’t I already explain I don’t attend a “white” church. Before I moved, my Catholic church basically supported the education of all the local (black) kids fleeing the public school system who couldn’t afford the tuition.

Thor, you seem to be rather impervious to facts. How do you account for this?

    Also, why did Obama lie?

  535. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

  544. Pablo says:

    FALSANI:
    Do you still attend Trinity?

    OBAMA:
Yep. Every week. 11 oclock service.

    Why did Obama lie, thor?

  545. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Carin, he’s never going to grow out of his juvenile hero worship until he has his nose rubbed in the fact that his Messiah has feet of clay.

Most of us face up to that fact somewhere in our teens (in my case, it was meeting Ozzy Osbourne that did the trick), but thor has somehow reached adulthood with the critical thinking skills of a 12 year old girl fantasizing over the latest issue of Tiger Beat.

(assuming that Tiger Beat still exists)

Retreat redumblican soldiers to your White churches for prayer and consolation from Jesus, and to plot your r-wing liar-liar-lie revolution!

Are you retarded? Didn’t I already explain I don’t attend a “white” church. Before I moved, my Catholic church basically supported the education of all the local (black) kids fleeing the public school system who couldn’t afford the tuition.

Pretend you read enough to recognize what’s metaphorical.

  547. Pablo says:

I read enough to recognize what’s insanity. Why Barack be lying, thor?

  548. cranky-d says:

Even if there were no Tiger Beat, the idea of Tiger Beat lives on.

BTW, why did Obama see fit to mischaracterize his actions?

  549. Pretend you read enough to recognize what’s metaphorical.

Yea, but not only do I not attend a “literal” white church, I don’t attend a “figurative” one either. See, if I say Obama attends a “black church” … it’s not a metaphor.

Oh, and was Obama’s lie a metaphor? Or an analogy?

  550. See, when we say Thor has a Tiger-beat crush on Obama, it’s not a figurative thing. It’s a metaphor!

  551. Neidermeyer says:

    Answer the question, maggots!

  552. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    I think it’s technically a synecdouche.

It could be a golf thing.

  554. SarahW says:

I do wonder why Obama dissembled. It suggests dirtiness.

I do wonder why Obama dissembled. It suggests dirtiness.

Unless it was a “Do these pants make me look fat?” moment, which would suggest weakness.

  556. Roland THTG says:

    Good Grief!
560 comments and semanthornip still can’t come up with, “He misspoke”?

“This is the operative statement. The others are inoperative.”
Maybe they can dig up Ron Ziegler.

  557. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

That would require admitting that Teh One isn’t infallible.

    So, not gonna happen.

  558. Bod says:

However, it does seem like ‘teh narrative’ is in:

    Governor ‘Panicked’,’Delusional

  559. Bod says:

(Sounds like a lot of ‘progressives’ too)

  560. Bod says:

What we haven’t seen in what seems like a very long time is a ‘WORM’ (What Obama Really Meant). They seemed to stop about the time he ascended to the Peacock Throne.

Why do you think that was? The campaign was afraid to interpret the literal word of The Messiah, lest they corrupt the next 153 volumes of his autobiography?

Oh, btw, why *did* Obama lie to the press, trolls?
