An Inconvenient Find [Dan Collins]

You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!

According to the BBC’s Tom Housden, reporting on the Cambay find:

map showing siteThe vast city — which is five miles long and two miles wide — is believed to predate the oldest known remains in the subcontinent by more than 5,000 years.

The site was discovered by chance last year by oceanographers from India’s National Institute of Ocean Technology, who were conducting a survey of pollution.

Using sidescan sonar, which sends a beam of sound waves down to the bottom of the ocean, they identified huge geometrical structures at a depth of 120 feet.

Debris recovered from the site — including construction material, pottery, sections of walls, beads, sculpture, and human bones and teeth — has been carbon dated and found to be nearly 9,500 years old (BBC article).

Several reports confirm this estimate. Housden added, “The whole model of the origins of civilisation will have to be remade from scratch.”

Unheard-of Scope of Cambay Ruins

The BBC article tells us that the remains of this ancient city stand upon “enormous foundations.” Marine archaeologists discovered them with a technology known as “sub-bottom profiling.”

Author and filmmaker Graham Hancock, an authority on archaeological investigations of ancient civilizations, reportedly said that the evidence was compelling. For example, he said that the oceanographers had found two large blocks that were larger than anything that’s ever been found. “Cities on this scale,” Hancock told BBC Online, “are not known in the archaeological record until roughly 4,500 years ago when the first big cities begin to appear in Mesopotamia.

Theorists are postulating that the area where this city exists was submerged when the ice caps melted at the end of the last Ice Age.

Or maybe not!

    Hmmmm.

*shrug* IMO the human species has been around for 70,000+ years but our technological civilization has only been around for 10,000 or so years. It’s entirely possible to me that several highly technological civilizations have come and gone since then. Consider one of the goals of engineering products today is to design in materials to match expected lifetime. Nobody builds an ipod to last centuries so the greater the level of technological sophistication the faster such devices would decay. Even now there are people studying how to -make- such devices decay faster to lighten the load on garbage handling. The idea that a highly technological society rose at some point in the past and then fell apart with nothing remaining is entirely possible to me.

On the other hand it’s also entirely possible that human beings have spent the previous 60,000+ years pretty much doing nothing more than jerking off.

As a human being I can certainly attest that some days I want to erect civilization … and on others the erection itself captures my entire interest.

Memo, I’ve thought about it and I came to the conclusion that even once evolution (or divine intervention by FSM or whatever) bestows an ability on a critter — even a bipedal primate — it still takes time for that critter to fully explore what that ability makes possible. When no creature before or since has been able to consciously design the trappings of civilization, the first and hardest step to doing so is not even going to be realizing it can be done.

A whole bunch of intervening realizations have to come about first.

Tens of thousands of years sitting around jerking off doesn’t seem so unlikely under those circumstances, especially if that’s what it takes for one of those hairy old goons to think, “It’s too bad I can’t look at something to remind me what the real thing feels like.”

Yeah, it’s also my theory that p0rn has been the impetus for every single leap forward by humanity. What of it?

Sure, Graham’s a crank. But that doesn’t really speak to the reality / unreality of the dating of this elderly ruin. It just means that other scientists don’t want to look at it for fear of being associated with him.

Because while the theory of science may be profoundly rational, the practice is more like a soap opera.

We’ve “lost” more recent civilizations for thousands of years, like Hattusha and the cannibalistic Moche, so I’d not be surprised to find some 10kyo city somewhere like this.

India is the least well-explored of the three cradles of civilization, still some surprises to be found.
