Is the headline to Daniel Politi’s round-up of newspaper coverage of Blagogate. All I have to say is that Illini are pretty damn ‘incurious,’ considering “that Blagojevich is the fifth Illinois governor to be charged with criminal conduct over the last 50 years.”
Mind you, this is the site that gave ought-to-be disgraced Ex-Prosecutor-Turned-Governor Eliot Spitzer a column. It’s going to be interesting to see what Spitzer has to say on this subject, if anything.
From the end of this piece, we hear again from our old pal, licensed journalist Tim Egan:
In an op-ed piece, the NYT’s Timothy Egan says that the complaint against Blagojevich “showed a man trolling the depths of darkness,” where nothing was sacred and anything could be used for political and personal gain. “It would be somewhat comforting if there were a larger lesson here, or a map out of the banality of evil,” writes Egan. “But there is no trend or modern twist, no evidence of a greater criminal web, no overarching moral. Like a kid who beats up old ladies just because he knows no other way, the allegations against Blagojevich amount to what Fitzgerald called a crime spree, of the political variety.”
So squalid is this corruption, according to Egan, that it must be sui generis. No lessons here. No moral. No contamination. Move along.
In comments to a previous post, geoffb notes the Volokh post by Jim Lindgren in which the following appears:
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, Obama denies personal knowledge of the corrupt proposal.
“I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.”
As I’ve said before, as with Bill Clinton, Barack Obama’s words should be read carefully to see what he is saying and not saying. Apparently, Obama started to say that “we were not†“aware of what was happening,” but corrected himself by saying that “I was not aware of what was happening.”
That language leaves open the possibility that his staff was aware, but he personally was not. But why would Obama’s staff withhold information from him? I assume that Obama is telling the truth about not having spoken to the governor himself, since that might be easily refuted.
CONCLUSION:
From the evening of Nov. 10 until yesterday, Blagojevich, Obama, and his transition team acted in ways that are consistent with a knowledge of Blagojevich’s bribery attempt and a rejection of that attempt. What doesn’t fit easily with the timeline is Obama’s statement yesterday.
It should be noted that it is not a crime to fail to report a bribery attempt. The federal misprision of felony statute would seem to make it a federal crime to fail to report a federal felony:
Whoever, having knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military authority under the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. 18 USC s.4.
But case law has conclusively determined that mere non-reporting is not enough. Active concealment or the acceptance of a benefit for concealing is required.
Yet, looking at this timeline of Blagogate, it seems quite possible that someone in the Obama Camp is either lying or at least not revealing what they know. I also find it hard to believe that Obama’s closest advisors were hiding major corruption from him, especially as he was making decisions about where to place Senate candidates such as Jarrett.
Something important is missing from this story. Let’s hope that, whatever it is, the absent fact or explanation will allow the narrative to fit Obama’s denial more naturally.
Since by all accounts, the Obama camp refused Blagojevich’s bribery attempt, it would be extremely unwise to lie about it. Remember, it’s not the crime that trips you up; it’s the cover-up.

Incurious? Naw. As a former resident of that state, I can tell you that it’s just business as usual. In fact, compared to thirty or forty years ago, this sort of thing is nuthin’. There was a time when you couldn’t buy a roll of toilet paper without the mob gettin’ it’s cut. In recent decades, the government took over from the mob, and as with all things which are organized and operated by the government…

The amazing thing is that Blago keep flapping his lips, even when he knew the Feds were circling. Normally the local crooked politcos (yes, I know, that’s redundant) are far more cautious than that.
In terms of the blatant shakedowns, etc.? Hell, that’s standard operating procedure in this state. Frankly, if they want to withdraw the troops from Iraq and use them to bring regime change to Illinois, I am totally cool with that.

In Egan’s defense, I shared a similar reaction when digesting yesterday’s events. Blago’s actions were stunning not only for their stupidity, blatancy, and criminality, but also for their banality. There was no evil mastermind hatching some nefarious plot; there was just a political boss engaging in bribery and extortion.
To be sure, the accusations are huge. But they’re not complicated. It’s just pay-to-play blown up to a really big size.

Wright than I can my own grandmother, then less than 2 weeks later disown him because his poll numbers drop 15 points, and survive politically and with full throated support, I seriously doubt that this will harm him. Hey, sdferr, the linky in your #11 post to the KHQA story stating that The One met with Blago is down the memory hole. All you get now is “Content for Src=”217582″ of Type=”application/html; src=cms-id” is unavailable.”
Comment by Rob Crawford on 12/10 @ 3:05 pm #
Good thing I got a screenshot.
If the story was wrong, they could have made a correction. They could have just linked to a correction. Deleting the whole damned thing makes them look like they’re covering up an inconvenient fact.
Comment by Sdferr on 12/10 @ 3:08 pm #
Interesting Darth, you called it I guess. That thing has been linked to a fair-thee-well across the tubes today and I’d guess KHQA is tired of having to give out their non-answer or in the alternative have “decided” the story wasn’t true after all, wot?

Maybe they should just stop printing news altogether and just quote the ONE when HE speaks? Seems to be they willingly throw themselves under the bus when HE tells them to so why don’t we just skip all the bullsh@t about news articles, stories, and journalism. They could just print us all little red books to carry around in our pockets filled with HIS words instead.

I just put #116 up cause I was investigating his gayfacedness and then I was startled is all. The story, as maggie correctly pointed out, was way project-y (which we should have seen by now — projecting the not yet as if they know what will come — is what “journalism” has reduced itself to these days, like they are shaman-magicians foretelling the future) and could easily have been based on unsubstantiated rumor or leak, so, easily given up without a fight. Is there to be shame in shamanism and hence apologies forthrightly offered to offense to good judgment? Pah!

This is one of the things that’s really pushing my buttons. The left has abandoned even the figleaf of intellectual integrity. Sometime in the last eight years, they realized they could just out-and-out lie and get it accepted as the truth by enough people for the lie to be useful. So you get the “Bush said Iraq was an imminent thread” lie, the “Bush said Saddam bought uranium from Niger” lie, the whole host of lies covering up the statements — often more hawkish — from Democrats. They definitely realized what they could get away with before September of this year — they mobilized their army of liars against Palin as soon as her name came out, and worked so hard at it that people think she really said lines from a fucking comedy sketch.
Now they’re fucking airbrushing history to cover for the One.
The totalitarian impulse is strong in the country. And that both infuriates and scares me.

The reactionaries like thorazine and seman and alpo and asscrust were standing with their fingers crossed, eyes closed, clicking their heels together, Hoping and Hoping and Hoping to be transported to Castle Obamalot, and sure enough there they are, standing with The Magnificent O! (PBUH), ready to cross the drawbridge into the socialist utopia, and along comes the Eeeevil Black Knight Blago riding at full tilt and splatters The Magnificent O! (PBUH) with mud and horseshit.
Ain’t it delicious?

Me? I’m just glad the government has been taken away from Republicans. They need some time to regroup.
I believe you don’t give a shit about Republicans. Your identity is tied up in HATING a caricature of the left that exists only in your mind. To you Obama=communism and America=Republican values. Because you will always be disappointed.
Comment by happyfeet on 12/10 @ 7:16 pm #
One time like three years ago the Chinese guy at the shipping hut we went to cause our machine ran out of ink or something, we just paid him for stamps and then he put them on for us. That was the best Christmas ever so far. Actually this will be NG’s second Christmas and it goes a lot faster with her and she’s actually helpful unlike OG who is only minimally helpful except boss person made her redo some cause her labels were crooked and now she’s sort of dreading it this year. He will be gone this year probably for most of it so this year might be more pleasant than I’m expecting maybe. And that is the story of Christmas cards and how they relate to ennui and the lesson is make sure your labels are on straight. Peace.

The free market has nothing to do with gay marriage, I will leave that for another to explain as I really don’t feel that strongly about it.
My only gripe with stem cell research, and I would venture the position of most of the regulars here, is that I have no problem with it as long as it isn’t government funded. I feel that way about most research, if it has the potential to be profitable, let the profiteers fund it. Do I really need to explain how that fits in the free market?

Wrong and wrong. Again: You can’t identify either what you think or why you do. You don’t know what it is you reject, excepting your projections. Statements like that one are ample proof.
It’s not the politics that “work” or “fail”. The question is what underlies the motives and intents that create the politics. Just as the spectrum of motive points to the asymmetry of the application of principle — cheats insisting on equal footing while extending anything but fair play — so go the outcomes of policies.
You’ve a serious cart and horse issue, which is part of why you don’t know what conservatism fundamentally is.
Comment by assclown on 12/10 @ 10:23 pm #

No sweat, clio: Bush is no conservative.
Like all “progressives”, Semen can’t even imagine that someone might approve of some of Bush’s policies (e.g., vigorous prosecution of the war on terror), while disapproving of others (e.g., unrestrained government spending in other areas).
With them, it’s either blind obedience or pure hatred. If you support any of Bush’s policies, you must support all of them.
Binary minds.
Again, see Hoffer on this.

Do we know yet if Obama remembers how many states there are?

It doesn’t change how Baracky lied about him and his friend Blago not talking about who to pick to take his Senate seat. What this means is that Baracky is a liar on top of everything else and you can’t believe him when he says stuff. He’s really getting off on the wrong foot.

Obama knows the 29 states that voted for him, maggie.
The few that voted against him, well, better buy some kneepads.

If you guys learned to debate instead of always falling back on infantile insults, you might win an election once in a while.

The few that voted against him, well, better buy some kneepads.
And tuberhead won’t even understand my amusement.

I wonder if he was assigned to us by the dark lord Kos, or if he just shows up on his own..?

Obama’s Blagojevich story is crumbling.
Obama insisted that none of his staff had a part in the attempted selling of his Senate seat by Gov. Blagojevich. “I have never spoken with the governor on this subject. I am confident that no representative of mine would have any part in any deals related to this seat,” Obama said. It appears that Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, has been talking to Blagojevich. The details of those discussions are not yet known.
