post-racial racialism

This matches, I believe, nearly the precise definition of irony. Were irony to be dressed in a rumpled suit and speaking with a sneer on its wrinkled puss. Or maybe it’s parody I’m thinking of. Or tragedy.

Pathos?

Meh, who can keep it all straight anymore:

The head of the county bureau of elections hasn’t encountered any suspected voter registration fraud, but allegations in other parts of Pennsylvania have sparked a lawsuit and a verbal exchange between a state official and the Republican Party.

The Pennsylvania Republican Party filed a lawsuit to assure the vote count is accurate – a move that Gov. Ed Rendell’s press secretary described as a “Jim Crow attitude.”

Much as wishing to enforce existing immigration laws was depicted by many of our “liberal” betters as socially criminal (remember, this is precisely how Barack wants to influence the courts), here we have an example of wishing to prevent voter fraud is being cast as socially racist — leaving us with the surreal condition that best ways to avoid the charge of racism are 1) make sure you vote for a candidate based on his color; and 2) make sure you don’t interfere in any of the mechanisms put in place that might prevent the fraudulent election of a man based solely on his color — because any appeal to the law is by its very nature intended to disenfranchise those who are not allowed to vote. Which, too, is racist.

Or, to put it another way, in Obama’s post-racial world, the best way to avoid being labeled a racist is to act like a racist.

Irony. Parody. Tragedy. Pathos.

You tell me.

(h/t Hot Air, where Ed Morrissey notes, “And, by the way, let’s remember which political party imposed Jim Crow, and kept it in place until the federal government forced an end to its practice.”

To which the obvious response is some half-realized, intellectually incoherent set of buzzwords sputtered about “Southern strategy” and “Dixiecrats”.

Robert Byrd’s Kleagle hood was out being starched and could not be reached for comment.)

“Deep Stupidity” wasn’t on your list of choices, so I get I will have to go with irony.

  2. N. O'Brain says:

“And, by the way, let’s remember which political party imposed Jim Crow, and kept it in place until the federal government forced an end to its practice.”

OOOO OOOO [hand in air] THE DEMOCRATS, TEACHER!

  3. N. O'Brain says:

“…it wasn’t the GOP that opposed the Emancipation Proclamation. Nor was it the GOP that opposed the Thirteenth Amendment prohibiting slavery, the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteeing equal protection, or the Fifteenth Amendment guaranteeing voting rights. (In fact, Republicans voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act in greater percentages than did Democrats.)
Moreover, it wasn’t the Republican party that opposed Teddy Roosevelt’s anti-lynching legislation or that filibustered or otherwise opposed more than a dozen other anti-lynching provisions during the 20th century.
Republicans didn’t institutionalize Jim Crow, implement school segregation, or establish poll taxes and literacy tests to keep non-whites from voting. Bull Connor, George Wallace, Lester Maddox, and Orval Faubus weren’t Republicans.
It wasn’t a Republican who ordered the internment of Japanese-American citizens (or Italians or Germans) during World War II. Nor were Republicans behind the Chinese exclusion acts or licensing requirements that discriminated against non-white businesses and tradesmen.

    “Irony. Parody. Tragedy. Pathos.”

Less like irony and more like Doublethink.

  5. dicentra says:

    3) make sure you don’t show a black man in the vicinity of any white wimmen.

  6. N. O'Brain says:

    OT, but I like this:

On American reporting on the Tet offensive in South VietNam in “The Big Story” by Peter Braestrup:

“Drama was perpetuated at the expense of information,”

    Sounds familiar, eh?

  7. Jeffersonian says:

This is sheer nonsense. I remember distinctly FDR getting on TV in 1929 to denounce all those Republican Klansmen just before he sent the Green Berets to clear Hezbollah out of Lebanon.

  8. Aldo says:

Also occurring in Pennsylvania, testimony on ACORN’s voter registration fraud implicates Team Obama:

A former staffer for an affiliate of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now testified today that the organization was provided a “donor list” from the presidential campaign of Barack Obama in late 2007 for fundraising efforts.

Moncrief said she has a copy of a “development plan” that outlines how Obama contributors who had “maxed out” under federal contribution limits would be targeted to give to Project Vote, and that it was her job to identify such contributors.

Moncrief testified that ACORN and Project Vote were virtually identical.

Moncrief said she had received repeated warnings to “back off” from testifying today by people she knows at ACORN.

“I thought it was powerful testimony. She took a great personal risk,” said Heather Heidelbaugh, an attorney representing the state GOP.

Meanwhile, the LAT is still racing DU for the latest updates on Wardrobegate. (I’m not joking. They really are calling it that at the LAT Opinion blog).

Wasn’t Pathos one of the Three Musketeers?

  10. urthshu says:

    Not Pathos – Murthos.

  11. happyfeet says:

The more corrupter Baracky’s community organizey thugs are the less people will have to feel like they have to treat him like a for real respectable president if he wins I think. That’s good cause already it’s hard for me to take him seriously as anything other than a dirty socialist what NPR decided should be president.

  12. Mr. Pink says:

If Murtha wins his constituents really are fuckin idiots.

  13. happyfeet says:

But I maybe should wait until I see his infomercial before I say that. Dazzle me, baracky.

  14. Mr. Pink says:

I hope they interupt it for the Sham-Wow infomercial. Sham-Wow would never take any of that socialist bullshit.

  15. Sdferr says:

You don’t need to wait to see if Murtha’s constituents will put him back in office one more time to know whether they are idiots or not. They have been compiling evidence to that effect for many years.

  16. JD says:

    It is racist to …

    Say Baracky’s middle name.
Point out that Rev. Wright was an America-hating asshat.
Even infer that Teh One might know Ayers.
    Say Baracky is skinny.
    Say Baracky is articulate.
    Say Baracky is clean.
Say that he is a socialist.
Say that he is ignoring campaign finance laws.
Vote for anyone not named Baracky.
    Enforce the laws.
Do anything other than submit to the will of Teh Messiah.

  17. A fin scotch says:

Since I haven’t seen JD around in a while, I’m preemptively denouncing this thread and everyone who comments herein.

    Consider yourselves denounced.

  19. HeatherRadish says:

the best way to avoid being labeled a racist is to act like a racist.

That’s because you are using an outdated definition of “racism.”

Racism in the 20th century: Treating people differently based on the color of their skin.

Racism in the 21st century: NOT treating people differently based on the color of their skin.

  20. Rick says:

‘The Pennsylvania Republican Party filed a lawsuit to assure the vote count is accurate – a move that Gov. Ed Rendell’s press secretary described as a “Jim Crow attitude.”’

I gather from the Jim Crow reference that the governor’s flack imputes inaccuracies and cheating to the African-American communities. Hey, he said it.

    Cordially…

  24. Jim Ryan says:

This post strikes me as vaguely racist. I didn’t really understand it, but I’m going to recommend for indictment and demotion to one of the harsher gulags.

  25. sashal says:

Obama revealed as love child of Karl Marx and Rosa Luxembourg. Utah: McCain + 25.

Palin poses nude for Foreign Affairs. Utah: McCain + 25.

McCain shoots Larry King live on set. Misses. Utah: McCain + 25.

Obama endorsed by Adam Smith, Ayn Rand, Ronnie Reagan and Bill Buckley, via seance. Utah: McCain + 25.

Mississippi and Montana go blue, California asks for new color. Utah: McCain + 25.

    What’s up with Utah?

  26. B Moe says:

  27. pdbuttons says:

is it racist to buy a KFC bucket and get pissed off at those little “wingy” things? cuz I do..
then eat contents of said bucket and put eye-holes in it and put it on my head
    -cuz I do..
then drive to the burger king and order a chicken sangy
and chat up the drive thru voice greasily
    cuz i do…
just hope the fries are hot/and my change is correct

  28. Mikey NTH says:

Or, to put it another way, in Obama’s post-racial world, the best way to avoid being labeled a racist is to act like a racist.

Racisim can only exist one way, much like sexism, or oppression,or any other “bad thing”. And if you are capable of believing that then go for the pancakes at Milliway’s.

“If you’ve done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliway’s—the Restaurant at the End of the Universe!”

  29. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

See also: “Feminism”, as it applies to Sarah Palin.

  30. Mikey NTH says:

    #1 cranky-d:

Never discount the deep, yearning, desire for power over others. Then ‘deeply stupid’, or ‘irony’, or anything else becomes the Will to Power. Everything else – reality itself – is subservient to the Will.

You know, too many people read ‘If’ and don’t see the stanzas as metaphors, but rather as a guide to ‘how things actually work’.

  31. Mikey NTH says:

    #30 SBP:

    Duly noted.

  32. Mikey NTH says:

    #6 N. O’Brain:
I read Braestrup’s book, and it was a big part of my term paper in senior English. The parts where the press was comparing Khe Sahn to Dien Bien Phu was very enlightening, because I could, even at 17, see the differences between the two locations and the composition of forces.

But the drama took precedence over understanding how the NVA was being placed into the meat-grinder – they couldn’t have been more so unless they all fixed bayonets and went over the top.

And I am not surprised that no one pointed that out to them at the time.

Because I don’t watch political things on TV (not since Firing Line and Brinkley disappeared), I almost missed O!’s daily ‘cism:

The Obamamercial was scheduled at the same time as the first tipoff of the NBA on ESPN — which he and his people didn’t know, or they knew and didn’t care, or they did it on purpose to keep the brothers down (in the ratings).

  40. Ric Locke says:

Mossberg, sashal is marveling that the people of Utah would continue to vote for McCain despite (what sashal sees as) horrid things.

Of course, if Obama had used his half-hour tonight to give an impassioned tribute to Stalin against a background of red flags, sashal would have swooned over his true Americanism and wondered why anybody could fail to vote for the Messiah. It’s all in the attitude.

    Regards,

Isn’t it due to racism? Now, I’ll have to re-think the whole “fashioning-my-opinion-around-interviews-with-Charles-Barkley” thing. It doesn’t seem to be as reliable as I believed it to be. Go figure!

Guess I’ll have to go back to reading the NYT and LAT…oh wait!

  51. MarkD says:

How are they supposed to make the vote count “accurate” when a certain city in Pennsylvania has more registered voters than adults?

They care about alcohol, guns, sex offenders, drugs, and they really care to make sure you pay every nickel of taxes you owe. Why don’t we care half as much that only eligible voters may vote, once?

I don’t feel any particular obligation to abide by a fraud. I’m not sure about the rest of you chumps.
