Obama and Clinton are in Unity; their backers not so much [Karl]

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton may be wearing matching outfits in well-choreographed appearances, but their supporters are not singing from the Sir Paul & Jacko songbook quite yet.

The first hint should have been that their Thursday evening meeting with donors and fund-raisers was initially closed to the press.  The Obama campaign ultimately relented, allowing a pool reporter to cover the event.  The pool report by the Washington Post’s Shailagh Murray suggested both candidates were warmly received, and that Obama got a standing O! when he said he had told his donors to help retire Clinton’s campaign debt.

But after Murray was ushered from the room, Obama was subjected to some edgy questions and had an awkard encounter with Lanny Davis.  Marc Ambinder quotes one attendee as saying the mood was one of “guarded optimism.”  However, Howard Fineman surveyed some of the Clinton donors at the event (and some Obama fundraisers) and finds relations between the two camps remain strained.

The situation here seems simple on the surface.  Obama needs access to — and money from — Clinton’s donors.  Clinton wants Obama to help retire her campaign debt.  A variation on The Godfather rule would seem applicable: “It’s not personal, it’s politics.”  But Democrats tend to believe the personal is the political — and vice versa.  And so the soap opera seems destined to drag out for longer than it should.

I guess someone wants some CHANGE to go with that shake.

    – Its always refreshing to see the Left has feet of clay like all the rest of us. Except of course in their case, the clay continues all the way up into their cranial pans.

  3. ProggressiveHero says:

I do find it pretty freakin unbelievable that after her and her husband make over 100 million in the last couple years, they still want to bilk their own supporters for just a little more CHANGE so they can pay off THEIR debt. I guess there wasn’t any Chinese willing to back a loser.

  4. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – And before you whine ProgHorn, you have to admit that at PW at least you get insulted with panache’. (or would that be pan-ache’?)

  5. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Ugh. Did I just hear the other Shu drop?

  6. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

If McCain is smart enough to choose Palin, he’ll grab a good 25-30% of Hillary’s base right off the top.

  7. ProggressiveHero says:

I think right about now Shu would be better off taking all his money and putting it on 31 black than on Hillary’s chances on winning the nomination or Vice Presidency.

Yes BBH the insults here do have some flavor. Thank you for feeding my black hearted inner troll.

Tis sad times when passing ruffians can say “nigh” to an old woman!

Somehow, I think there is a lot LESS drama than there appears to be on the surface.

But it is entertaining to speculate.

    Well said.

  14. Karl says:

    Lisa,

There may be less drama between O! and H!

But among the donors, there’s probably still some residual PUMAtude.

  15. happyfeet says:

When you’re a donor, writing a check is the easiest thing in the world though. It’s kind of like the every problem’s a nail deal I think.

  16. Lisa says:

Possibly. It is very clear that the backers and donors were literally scratching each other’s eyes out. They are still licking their wounds. And a lot of the resentment is that these Baby Boomer Murphy Brownish Linda Bloodworth-Thomason types were SURE that the 90s were coming back and they were gonna be back in the saddle – but More Freaking Awesome Than Evah!! They were sooooo not ready to pass the torch and see it as having been snatched away by a bunch of arrogant and impatient ingrates. I am thinking that that rift will probably never truly mend.

I heard some of Rush today, for a couple minutes, and had to search out this transcript…

…She knows that everybody knows that she’s standing there because she needs $10 million from this little rookie hick who wiped her out, took away her only chance, perhaps, to achieve what she thought was hers by virtue of Gennifer Flowers, and Paula Jones, and Monica Lewinsky, and Juanita Broaddrick, and all the others. It’s gone, poof! Twenty-two million in debt. She’s standing there listening to this guy go on and on and on, and she knows full well that the only difference between what he is saying and a bag of manure is the bag. She’s standing there while looking admiringly and in awe at Barack Obama, cursing her campaign staff, her husband, and everybody involved in her campaign, and she is really teed off at whoever it was that convinced her to show up in Unity, New Hampshire, today, to stand there like an irrelevant, defeated candidate looking admiringly at somebody she’d like to squash like a cockroach, except there would be too many witnesses if she did it today. We all in life, folks, some days, we all have to eat the excrement sandwich. Some days we get mayonnaise, some days we get mustard, some days it’s plain. Today was plain.

Here, I’ll help him out…Hillary ate a shit sandwich today.

And had to beg for more. Nice!

Karl, I am sick of you pricks. You will agitate any little occasion; step back and look how silly you seem.

  20. Pablo says:

    cynn, you’ll be missed.

  21. Karl says:

    Just for you, cynn:

“I bit my tongue many times. Many times. I bit my tongue many times during this campaign,” Obama told his colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) last week during a private meeting. He repeated the “I bit my tongue” phrase three times during the meeting, the sources said.

The comments suggest that Obama believes that he did not unfairly attack Clinton but held back after feeling the sting of political barbs.

This is a man who has already made history and wants to be the most powerful person on Earth. Tell me who seems silly and petty.

  22. B Moe says:

Did Romney hit McCain up for money in return for his backing, cynn? Did the losers hit up Kerry in 04, or Gore in 00? Can you name one time in the history of American politics anything this crass, brazen and downright low rent has ever went down? And yet the press acts like it is perfectly fucking normal.

  23. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Yes, it’s Karl’s fault that the Dems have flown the Good Ship Identity Politics right into the ground.

    Heh.

  24. daleyrocks says:

“Karl, I am sick of you pricks.”

    Yet she keeps returning.

  25. The Lost Dog says:

    WOW! Cynn.

I hope that I am one of “you pricks”.

“Pricks” apparently meaning “You logical dinosaurs”.

  26. SevenEleventy says:

Karl, I am sick of you pricks. You will agitate any little occasion; step back and look how silly you seem.

WTF, do you know how silly you seem typing, “Karl, I am sick of you pricks.”, without using an exclamation mark(!).

  27. thor says:

Haha, cynn got sick on your prick.

  28. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Hey, cynn:

    I will not suck PW prick;
    Classic lib’rals make me sick.
I will not suck it here or there,
I will not suck it anywhere.
I do not like PW prick,
    I’d rather munch Obama’s dick.

Is this thread dead? Because I stumbled across this bit of (nearly) fresh frothmeat from a feminist near-feral over Hillary’s fall…

I think that non-feminist Obama supporters, and particularly male non-feminist Obama supporters, have this idea that we are just irrationally angry, our feelings are hurt and we should get over it or we’re just silly, don’t we know how bad McCain is, maybe they’ll just tell us one more time. The choice not to support Obama is a long-run rational choice. Right now, there is a party that hates women all the time, and a party that used to humor us, but hates us when it is convenient. It is our job to never, ever let it be convenient again, or there will be no one in government advocating for our rights.

We are not your sweeties, who just need candy and flowers to come around.

We are not your bitches, that is not a leash in your hand. Our bodily integrity is not a choke chain you may use to threaten us. If you think it is, you are no better than the Republicans. And yes, the “But! But! But!” Roe stick is just that – a threat. Politically involved women know exactly where we stand on Roe, and we know the Democrats haven’t been all that bothered to even look like they’re trying to protect it, these last seven years. We know what an anti-choice Supreme Court looks like, because we read Gonzales v. Carhart and our hearts broke in fear for ourselves and our sisters and nieces and daughters.

When you tell us that we’d better get in line and vote for Obama, OR ELSE ROE, you are holding our own bodies hostage against us, as if they were yours to take. You are actively, proudly, literally threatening us with our lives. Is that the change we should believe in?

I don’t think I would ever support a party that ‘hates women all the time’. And because I have concerns about unborn women that makes me hate women?

Sheesh. There’s absolutely no reason in that poor person’s head. She’s filled to the gills with mistaken identity.

    Hey, Spies, Brigands and Pirates:

Cynn has developed an intelligent writing style. Stick to giving discreet math pop quizzes. You are not her.

  31. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Hey, thor: don’t try to run with the big dogs or I’ll have to publicly humiliate you again.

  32. thor says:

Looks like my pointing out you can’t run with cynn has hurt your “Big Dog” pride.

How’s summer school going, are your kids well behaved?
