What Have They Done to Our Beautiful Narrative? [Dan Collins]

Bastards!

Friedman:

What seems to have happened in Iraq in the last few months is that the Iraqi mainstream has finally done some liberating of itself. With the help of the troop surge ordered by President Bush, the mainstream Sunni tribes have liberated themselves from the grip of Al Qaeda in their provinces. And the Shiite mainstream — represented by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the Iraqi Army — liberated Basra, Amara and Sadr City in Baghdad from both Mahdi Army militiamen and pro-Iranian death squads.

Blankley:

Fighting and winning always impress. Even merely fighting and persisting impress. Shortly after the fall of Soviet Communism, I had dinner with a then-recently former senior Red army general. He told me that the Soviets were astounded and impressed by the fact that we were prepared to fight and lose 50,000 men in Vietnam, when the Soviets never thought we even had a strategic interest there. They thus calculated that they’d better be careful with the United States. What might we do, they thought, if our interests really were threatened?

The full effects of the vigorous martial response of President Bush to the attacks of Sept. 11 will not be known for decades. But if history is any indicator, military courage, persistence and a capacity to kill the enemy in large numbers usually work to the benefit of such nations.

Let the gnashing begin.

UPDATE: Gnashing at TNR already, by Noam Scheiber.
See Robert Powell’s comment, though.

Huzzah! Another opportunity to employ newly favorite aphorism!

Kill the chicken, let the monkey watch.

  2. mojo says:

Yeah, you’d think that wiping the floor with the biggest, baddest military in the middle east in 3 weeks flat would give some people pause. Especially those fielding out-dated soviet equipment and tactics.

    But apparently not.

  3. ProggHero says:

The world would be better off if we never invaded either Afghanistan or Iraq. WTF are you guys smoking to think invading these countries and killing hundreds of thousands of people is a good thing?

  4. Ouroboros says:

Hard to imagine why Clinton’s ’98 Cruise Missile attack on an empty base ddint have the same effects…

  5. steve says:

Obama voted against the war, but he was actually for the Iraqi people. Now that the Iraqi people are doing better, he is clearly been vindicated. Obama was right all the time. He’s so cool!

  6. ProggHero says:

Really love the reference to Vietnam being a good thing. You guys are too rich.

  7. JD says:

Yes, Froggy Hero is right about something. Our surrender in Vietnam was a disgrace. My wife did not really need all of those pesky little relatives.

  8. lee says:

Yeah, I’m thinking there are many swarthy types who have rethought the wisdom of 9/11 since cheering for it nearly seven years ago. There hasn’t been much terrorizing going on in the US since. Just affected outrage from the code pink asshats.

  9. Dash Rendar says:

Ruh-Roh. Straw man alert: …killing hundreds of thousands of people is a good thing…

Now who is doing all that killing PH? I’d venture a guess the chaps that fill the trunks of cars with artillery shells and roll up to the local fruit market. Of the ~160-175,000 Iraqi deaths thus far, ~90% are estimated to have been the result of Muslim-on-Muslim, Shiite-Sunni, Al-Qadea vs. market type violence. A foul tyrant is gone the epidemic of war in Afghanistan finally has a chance to come to an end. PH, implementing your policies is what results in 9/11, is the extension of the Clinton doctrine of hitting soap factories in Khartoum, bombing empty huts in the Hindu-Kush and calling it a day.

I happen to be smoking a nice southfarling weed btw.

  10. Sdferr says:

Proggy, you forget Obama’s bring a gun if he brings a knife et sequentia? Remember how that speech ends?

Why, because a communist “victory” that inflicted millions of deaths and hundreds of thousands of refugees is, what, a good thing?

    FOAD, reactionary.

The progressive movement would have had a hard time making a go of it without it. You have milked it like a borrowed cow for how many years now?

Al Qaeda 9/11 After Action Analysis

Gains: 15 minutes of dancing in the street, shooting AKs in the air and making that weird ‘La La La’ sound.

Losses: 5 solid years of being mercilessly slaughtered in Iraq, Afghanistan and (quietly) elsewhere..

All in all a net sum loss.

  17. BJTex says:

Huh, poked his head up again.

    WHACK! WHACK! WACK! WHACK!

  18. Rick Ballard says:

“All in all a net sum loss.”

Gotta factor “virgins earned” into the equation. Plus the excitement of getting to go to Iraq on the part of all those AQ fellas who unwittingly decided to spend the rest of their short lives there.

    Still a net loss though.

  19. lee says:

You have to admit JD, those fifteen minutes were very inspirational for all the progg hero’s out there.

You know, the biggest backers of Obama…

  20. lee says:

    Damn! Sorry.

    Sorry.

    That was Ouroboros, not JD.

    Shit!

  21. Salt Lick says:

We may one day look back on this as Iraq’s real war of liberation. The one we led five years ago didn’t count.

Friedman proves once again that he is a contemptible little putz willing to summarily dismiss everyone else’s blood, sweat, and tears if it helps him garner another Pulitzer and prove his brillance and foresight.

I’ve always believed that there is only one good thing about extremists: They don’t know when to stop….
Eventually, this Muslim-on-Muslim oppression seemed to spark the “we’re-not-going-to-take-this-anymore” rage

Friedman doesn’t have the class to admit it was brilliant strategy to fight for democracy in the very heart of AQ’s proposed Caliphate. Remember right after 9/11 how we heard that billions of Muslims hated us and, given our commitments to Israel, just how were we going to deal with that without a world war? Bush-Cheney figured it out. Get on the side of Muslim freedom.

The only thing Putzy Friedman has always believed in is opportunistically watching for the next media wave and riding it to another Pulitzer book and numerous TV appearances in which he assures everyone he foresaw the future. Having supported the invasion of Iraq and then bailed on it, he’s now paddling his little board furiously again, and that tells me surf’s up on Iraq’s future.

Still think PH is a parody. It takes pharmaceutical grade stupidity, arrogance and groupthink to vomit up the threadbare talking points he’s been doing.

    Oh, wait…

  25. lee says:

Not only that kelly, he is trotting out 2005 talking points.

He’s like a Monkyboy in a 747 cockpit, madly pushing every button in sight, getting exited over the distressed sounding voices of ground control wafting from the radio…

  26. ProggressiveHero says:

In my wild parody fantasy I could not come up with the whopper told about Vietnam having the benefit of scaring the Soviets. Yes 50 + thousand soldiers killed and us retreating in defeat really scared them.

  28. ProggressiveHero says:

“In my wild parody fantasy I could not come up with the whopper told about Vietnam having the benefit of scaring the Soviets. Yes 50 + thousand soldiers killed and us retreating in defeat really scared them.

    – And that junior, is because you have no idea what the real reason we were in VietNam if the first place is. Most from that era do not know, let alone the indoctrinated gaggle of current lolly gaggers that have been raised on a constant diet of “oh how we showed the man back in the day” by all the old assed hippies still trying to relive the “glory” dats.

    – They were had, and now you’ve been had. Right on dude.

I learned about it the hard way.. just like Pvt Conrad Vig did.. I was cheering the US invasion during Gulf I and thought a little ululating was in order… A Syrian friend promptly busted up laughing and explained “Men dont do this..”.

  42. Big D says:

    PH,

It wasn’t the hippies that ended the war in Vietnam. It was the fools in Congress that were wedded to defeat that cut off funding. The military had both the VC and the north on the run but were done in by the mother’s of Congress. If you would bother to pick up a history book you would know that. I suppose that would be too much to ask. What happened after we left? Millions were slaughtered in the killing fields. US credibility was devastated for years. No one trusted us. That was your policy in action dumbass. You are either a parody or the dumbest person on the planet.

  43. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

“The repugnants narrative about “Vietnam was only lost because of hippy liberal scum” is getting kinda old.”

    – Nam was not about, caused, made, unmade, effected, not effected, by either the Liberal Marxist scum, or Nixon. That was a lot of noise and bullshit.

    – We went into Nam under Eisenhower and Kennedy, stayed there due to the persistence of the State Department, and got the fuck out the minute we had MAD deployed, which was the plan from the very beginning. Could have saved a lot of lives if Kennedy and Johnson haden’t wasted time playing moon cadets.

    – Get a bit of truthful learning junior, then come back and tell us what you’ve learned. Til then go back to your WarCraft role playing.

So why don’t you go committ suicide and improve the gene pool?

  51. Ouroboros says:

Come to think of it, does the word “Ululate” even exist in Arabic? Does the Arabic language have onomatopoeia ? I’m thinking that to the average none-to-educated Arab on the street the word for that sound actually translates as “weird la la la sound that women say”

  52. ProggressiveHero says:

See, it’s this kind of talk that has me thinking he is for real. Progressives can not understand the difference between fact and opinion. They also can not understand that truth is a defense. Hence, Goldberg can point out that the Nazis were influenced by Darwin and they go bat shit. They can not understand that the truth can be a defense of the statement (re: to collectivists, the narrative is the highest good and all must come under it / their politics). To the rest of us, it’s either a fact or not a fact. It need not have deeper meanings than what it is (re: the fact, or not, that the Nazis were influenced by Darwin does not say whether Darwin was right or not… or whether the Nazi’s interpretation was valid or not… et cetera)…

Anyway, that Russian General either said those things… or he did not. They were either an accurate reflection of the leadership of the USSR’s thoughts.. or not. Whether he likes the either of those… or not… is not relevant.

You are insulting FDR, PH? Or the country at that time?
Or are you arguing that only those who have been to war should decide when the US should go to war? Kind of makes a hash out of the civilian control over the military thing, doesn’t it?

Hi, thor. Sorry, I haven’t been in this thread until just a little while ago. I’ve been very busy with real life.

  99. Dan Collins says:

    I think FDR was Navy.

  100. Big D says:

Besides only idiots join the army, so which are you an idiot or a liar?

I agree about the Army. You’ll notice that my service was with the USMC. That’s the United States Marine Corps, boy. Look it up. No disrespect to the Army intended. Well, maybe a little bit of interservice rivalry.

Call me stupid boy. Where did you serve?

  101. Big D says:

    #91 Thanks Dan

  102. ProggressiveHero says:

Never “served” anywhere grandpa. I do not think I have to join a brainwashing cult and go to other countries to kill brown people to prove my manhood.

  103. Dan Collins says:

    Sure, Big D ;-P

  104. Uh-huh says:

#90 “Besides only idiots join the army…”

    Support the troops much?

  105. Dan Collins says:

You’ve never served anything, Proggy, except yourself.

  106. Uh-huh says:

I vote it must be parody.
    C’mon, fess up.

He served as Ho Chi Minh’s butt-boy.

  108. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Tell you what widdle PH. I’d rather be a chickenhawk (witch I’m not with two tours of duty, even by your ass downside up arguments) than a chickenshit.

    – Tell us some more about your theories of history, the KKK thing and the Nam rewrite bullshit were mildly amusing.

  109. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

“I do not think I have to join a brainwashing cult….”

    – Well you already screwed the goose on that one LARPboy, what’ll you do for your next trick?

    – If you have a working brain cell and you honestly don’t know your in the cultiest of cults you could find, about one notch down from Heavens-Gate, or the Peoples temple, you need a brain transplant. Even the one working cell is putrified.

  110. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

“I do not think I have to join a brainwashing cult and go to other countries to kill brown people to prove my manhood.”

Don’t look now jackass, but you’re neck deep in a brainwashing cult…and it hasn’t done anything for your manhood.

You must get punched in the face a lot.

Sorry your son may fight and die for nothing NOBrain, but you can blame bush for that not me. Keep telling yourself it is for some noble cause though.”

    I’ve thought about this.

IF, and it’s a big if, my son were to die in Iraq, he would die a hero.

“ProggressiveHero” (and note the irony of his name) would still be an oxygen stealing collection of random atoms.

What a pitiful way to go through life.

I really feel sorry for you, ph, for the futility of your existence.

  112. mojo says:

“Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.”

    PH,

My grandfather served in the USMC at Belleau Wood. My Uncle was in the fifth Marines in WWII, a recipient of the Navy Cross, the nation’s second highest award for valor in combat. My father was in the eigtth Marines in Vietnam. I was in the fourth Marines in the Gulf War.

What have you done for your country?

Do I need to say that I think you are worthless?

  114. Big D says:

    N’Obrain,

You must be so proud of your son! I hope that I raise mine as well as you have.

  116. N. O'Brain says:

    Snap.

My comment wasaimed at YOU, Big D.

  117. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – He doesn’t see himself as futile NO, he sees himself as “smart”. Thats because with an incomplete education he doesn’t realize that phony cover ups do not work when you have a poor self image, they just serve to make it worse becuase they rob you of the life experience that makes other people grow. And then theres karma.

    – Cowardice, even when its all dressed up in a pile of pretty drug store psychology, will go on eating away at his manhood until hes too old to change.

    – Really a miserable way to cash out, as he will find. A man has to face his fears and personal monsters, false ideas and excuses don’t work in real life.

  118. N. O'Brain says:

    And, yes, I am proud.

Have I mentioned the he just received a NAM?

  119. Big D says:

Have I mentioned the he just received a NAM?

    Again, you must be proud!

  120. Sara says:

@@@@@@@@OTFL. That’s okay PH, tomorrow maybe she’ll let you cop a feel UNDER her blouse. Doubtful though, even high school girls tend to reject the guy who is always picked last.

  121. Big D says:

    N’Obrain,

With the NAM, is your son a Marine, or one of those lesser services? If he is Navy, no problem. We always appreciated them taking us to work!

More of the interservice rivalry! Ooh Rah!

  122. B Moe says:

I do not think I have to join a brainwashing cult and go to other countries to kill brown people to prove my manhood.

    Cpl. Matt the Marine, USMC.

  124. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – NO. Everyone whos actually an adult on here is proud of your son, and all the sons that put it on the line for the rest of us. My son just registered so he may be joining your soon.

    – When the people that have any pride in their country and the smallest amount of personal principles are out there every day putting their libes in harms way so assholes like Proggass can sit at home in his elitist cacoon and play video games, and then take potshots at the very people who make it possible for his useless ass to be safe, you just want to smack the shit out of them.

    – Its simply true that some people never learn. PH is so damn smart he doesn’t see the irony in kicking his own country while he mouths off the totalitarian ideas of a bankrupt, inhumane ideology that sprang from a country we spent 50 years getting rid of, while they continuously threated us with nuclear destruction. That takes a special brand of immature cognitive dissonance.

    – Proggs are either cowards hiding behind their truthiness and lies, or just plain illiterate.

  125. john pigott says:

Maybe ProggHero is the “You can”t have him” woman’s kid, come back from the future. Yay, time travel works!

  126. N. O'Brain says:

Yeah, a 24 yo corporal, out in the field for 3 1/2 weeks at Ft. A. P. Hill, and running food services for the batallion, actually a job 3 pay levels higher.

Oh, and he got a Commander’s Coin from the CO, a LTC, also.

  127. happyfeet says:

Yay! ok so I had to look it up it’s still cool

  128. Dan Collins says:

  129. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – john – Think you’d be referring to “alex”, or as Darleen calls him, “momma’s boy”.

    – And yes, that would fit our “coward hero”.

  130. Big D says:

    BBH,

I don’t think that PH is smart enough to make the connection. He bemoans the loss of freedom under the Bush admin, but is all for the fairness doctrine, all the while ignorant of the irony. Ahh, to be young and so sure you have it all figured out.

This is one of those unspoken facts of history that people never consider. Korea and Vietnam were wins, in the larger strategic purpose they served. The reason we got involved in both was to stop the aggressive spread of communism through proxy armies. That worked.

  132. Big D says:

    NO,

It’s got to drive PH crazy that he is at AP HILL, one of the great civil war generals.

  133. N. O'Brain says:

  138. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – It also worked in Nam. Unfortunately we spent way too much resource on chasing moonbeams, which took away from the MAD deployment, some in the industry believe by as much as 5 years, so a lot of guys died that otherwise may not have.

    – So then you have the jackass’s that got lead around by their noses by the SDS and Weathermen underground, both self described Marxist/Commie orgs, actually bragging about getting duped.

    – And just exactly what are they so proud of? Maybe the 2 million souls that were slaughtered after we left?

    – Stupidity always runs rampant in the young and impressionable.

  139. Big D says:

    BBH,

Well said. By the way, you are either a safari hunter or you work for NASA? I’ve been trying to figure it out.

  140. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Did a stint with NSA Big D. My transmitters are on Hubble. That was one job we did for NASA, but never worked directly for them.

  141. Big D says:

Hubble rocks! Literally. Sorry, that was cheap.

  142. ProggressiveHero says:

Whats wrong with SDS I was a member in college. All we did was get signatures in the cafeteria for different causes and sit around talking about politics. I did not consider myself a “commie” when I was participating in it. Oh yeah we did a couple anti-war rallies in 2004 too.

  143. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Big Bang is from my 45 years in Aerospace – “Hunter” is to honor a German Shepard scout dog that got ny oldest son through Nam alive, and saved so many other GI lives he got the CMH, and a slew of other medals, and unlike lurch, he never shot himself in the ass with grenade launcher. (he didn’t do it twice either like sKerry.) I think he was the most decorated canine from the war.

    So?

  145. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Cluebat Proggass. If you still have contact with the SDS people, ask them to tell you what they were doing in Kent for two weeks before the “event”.

    – I’d be seriously surprised if they were honest and told you. You don’t honestly believe these people (like the Winter Soldiers) are actually going to tell you what they want to achieve do you? I mean naive is one thing, totally blind, and shame on you.

  146. Mikey NTH says:

#100 Dan. Assistant Secretary of the Navy. A civilian post. Frankiln ZRoosevelt was never in the uniformed military.

So? Got it all figured out do you?

  148. Ric Locke says:

Returning to the original subject of the post, or something related —

As I said above, Friedman in particular is a weathervane. He subscribes to the Opportunist Theory of Leadership — find a parade, get a baton and a fancy suit, and get out front with enthusiasm. As such, he also serves as a leading indicator.

Iraq is starting to look more and more like a success, and the Left cannot ignore that any longer. They do, in fact, eventually face physical facts, especially when their faces are rubbed in them, but do so in their own way. They can and will admit that the outcome is favorable; what they cannot do under any circumstances or in response to any force is give George W. Bush any credit for that. It would be rather like the Church giving Satan credit for perseverance.

So what they have to do is find a formula that declares Iraq a success while denying that Bush had anything to do with it other than obstructionism. Note the concordance between what Friedman wrote and what I’ve been saying — the importance of the Awakenings, the function of the Surge as enabler and catalyst rather than prime mover, the machinations of Mookie. There’s enough material there, especially if (as usual) they ignore facts on the ground in favor of Teh Narrative™.

What you want to watch for is Yglesias to take it up. He’s smarter than Friedman, and even less scrupulous; Friedman is just an opportunist, where Matt is an ideological fabulist. He is good at what he does, though, and it’ll be interesting in a train-wreck sort of way to watch it evolve.

    Regards,
    Ric

  149. Big D says:

I mean naive is one thing, totally blind, and shame on you.

    Very well said, BBH.

PH, come back when you grow up.

  150. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – A lot of people that join these orgs in college do it from an honest position of “sticking it to the man”, but they never are told what the core people are after. Thats just the way it is. All these years later I have friends from that era I get together with once in awhile to shoot the shit and have a beer, and most of them just laugh and look at me sort of perplexed and say – “how could I have been so damn stupid and gullible, what the hell was I thinking”.

    – I understand, but it doesn’t change anything.

  151. Mikey NTH says:

Last Monday at USCG Station Belle Isle the crew of a small boat received coins from headquarters for a rescue. A boat had capsized and they had arrived and rescued the passengers. One Coast Guard gave his coin to the Canadain Coast Guard boat crew from Amherstburg who also responded in the rescue, and righted and dewatered the capsized boat. They also did a rescue of one of the passengers.*

PH has no idea what he is talking about, but talk he will. Service and duty are beyond his ken.

*I was there for the fireworks patrol, that is what I heard when it was announced at the briefing – and there was more honor in that crowd – Canadian and American, various L.E. and auxillary – than PH could muster in a month of Sundays.

  152. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – I think the turning point, if you can put your finger on it was when the Arab Brotherhood Clerics came right out and called Bin Ladens efforts backwards, and “less than useful”, pointing out that all hes managed to really achieve since 9/11 is bring the wrath of the West (Bush) down on their heads, and get a lot of Arabs and other ME people killed.

    – BTW, there was a report today that said that so many companies, big and small, are trying to invest in Iraq now, the Iraqi gov. is having a hard time keeping up with the requests.

    – Soon the Left can add Iraq to its wall of shame, along with Cuba, and Viet Nam.

  153. Mikey NTH says:

BTW – my older brother was Marine reserve; younger brother is RA and a major – has been to Iraq and Afghanistan. My oldest nephew is finishing basic at Pendelton and will graduate as a PFC (mom said he is a squad leader during training). I am USCG Auxiliary because I am too old to go regular or reserve (tried before and after 9/11, they said “no dice”).

So, do you do anything to help your community, PH? Belong to a club like the Kiwanis or Lions or Jaycees? Anything to give back to the community you live in? Or do you just carp and whine?

  154. CArin -BONC says:

Mikey – I haven’t enjoyed the fireworks since way -back-when they used to allow boaters to basically anchor beneath the fireworks. After that, any view from either side paled in comparison. So, you had the best seat in the house!

You know better to ask whether or not Proggs helps the community! That is what the government is for! Doh.

  155. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

= Mikey, I think he set page #2 of his talking points on fire with his blunt, and took off.

    – At any rate hes piled up so many aw-shits at this point it hardly matters anymore.

  156. Mikey NTH says:

CArin – the anchor zones are pretty well set year-to-year: no further up river from River Front Towers (just west of the Joe Louis Arena); no further down river than Tricentennial Park (about a half mile from the Ren Cen).* It’s for safety, and yes – the view from the water is spectacular. You also see a lot of freighters making with the hurry to get through before the river is closed for the fireworks barges to be brought out.

*Just look for the two black-hulled Coast Guard cutters. They mark the extreme ends of the anchorages – and they are black-hulled because they are icebreakers and bouy tenders – that is they have jobs they are going to get dirty with – hard working vessels are both Bristol Bay and Neah Bay.

  157. Mikey NTH says:

BBH – I agree. PH came in and didn’t quite realize that most commenters here are forty years old and up. My question last weekened, and other comments as drawn out, has confirmed that. Most here have first-hand experience, or know people with first hand experience, so we do not talk out of our nether regions on these subjects. We have seen it before, and advertising hype falls kind of dead around here. As a kid, and a teenager, I was susceptible to advertising. After age 22, that fell off – because I grew up. Amazing how that works, eh?

But still, a self-selected community like this is going to be even less susceptible to hype than the average person, and is going to be skeptical about a political campaign built on hype as if that was a campaign for a new soft drink. thor should ponder that little bit of information, but I know he won’t.

Or to recall an old ad (and politcal) campaign – “Where’s the beef?”

(Come on thor; you can work with that – right?)

  158. ProggressiveHero says:

  163. Mikey NTH says:

Comment #161 is telling – you really have nothing to say other than ‘says you’ PH. All of the old memes have fallen apart due to overuse.

Really, you should try to come up with some new ones. Where supporting a Baathist dictator doesn’t leave you being pro-fascist; where supporting the Taliban doesn’t make you pro-Theocratic. The United States isn’t perfect, but compared to its enemies – it is so far ahead that an argument against her and for them is laughable to anyone who isn’t reflexivly anti-American. At least the Soviets talked a good game; but the Islamofascists? You want to tie in with them?

Well, good luck scoring that 72 in Allah’s celestial brothel.

  164. mishu says:

Carter was ahead of his time, if we had enacted his energy policy all those years ago we would not be where we are today with 4 dollar a gallon gas.

Hahaha. We’d be paying $8/gallon *and* would have to check the calendar to see which day we could fill up. (Even license plate can fill on even days. :P) Also, the price of sweaters would be through the roof.

  165. Good Lt. says:

    >>All we did was get signatures in the cafeteria for different causes and sit around talking about politics

And you thought you could get stink finger doing that…

  167. ProggressiveHero says:

Well GoodLt. the point was to personalize it because obviously some of the people here view SDS as some sort of commie organization bent on world domination ala Pinky and the Brain.

  168. Good Lt. says:

    >>Carter was ahead of his time, if we had enacted his energy policy all those years ago we would not be where we are today with 4 dollar a gallon gas.

If the Democrats had not let Jane Fonda run the nation’s nuclear policy, we’d have enough power to light every home and city in the nation 100 times over forever by now.

And O! is against building new ones. No particular good reason why – just a mindless adherence to the failed ideas of the Carter administration.

If we had started drilling and refining our own oil a decade ago, we would be at least marginally less reliant on foreign oil.

But again, Democrats were there to prevent energy independence. Heroes, they. Heroes, I tell you.

  169. ProggressiveHero says:

Oil is destroying the enviornment. If we have to pay more so people do not drive huge ass SUV’s then I am all for it.

  170. Good Lt. says:

SDS was a waste of time, as was the entire leftist/populist movement of the 1960’s. Nine years of your life you won’t get back.

From the WikiEntry on SDS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Students_for_a_Democratic_Society_(1960_organization)

SDS developed from the Student League for Industrial Democracy (SLID), the youth branch of a socialist educational organization known as the League for Industrial Democracy (LID). LID descended from the Intercollegiate Socialist Society, started in 1905. Early in 1960, SLID decided to change its name into SDS. The phrase “industrial democracy” sounded too narrow and too labor oriented, making it more difficult to recruit students. Moreover, because the LID’s leadership did not correspond to the expectations and the mood on the campuses, the SLID felt the need to dissociate itself from its parent organization. SDS held its first meeting in 1960 at Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Alan Haber was elected president. Its political manifesto, known as the Port Huron Statement, was adopted at the organization’s first convention in 1962, based on an earlier draft by staff member Tom Hayden.

Socialists, huh? Yeah. Collectivism had nothing to do with communism. In fact, the reason the organization crumbled was because one faction of the leadership condemned communism too harshly and the other realized that yes, Virginia, communism was objective inferior to the capitalism.

    Funny, that.

  171. RTO Trainer says:

    What’s Wrong with SDS?:

19 May 1972 — The US Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia is bombed by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest US policy in Vietnam, especially US mining of Vietnam harbors and the bombing of Hanoi.
18 May 1973 — Several police cars parked at the 103rd Precinct of the NYPD were bombed by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest the shooting death of Clifford Clover, a ten year old boy who had been shot by a police officer.
27 September 1973 — The Latin American headquarters building of the International Telephone and Telegraph Company in New York City is bombed by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest the role that the company had played in the overthrow of President Allende in Chile.
7 March 1974 — The office of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in the US Federal Building in San Francisco was bombed by the Women’s Brigade of the SDS to protest discrimination practiced by the department.
14 March 1974 — A dinner in honor of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller was “stinkbombed” by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest drug abuse programs of the Governor and the Governor’s handling of the Attica prison riots.
31 May 1974 — The Los Angeles office of California Attorney General Evelle Younger located in the Old State Building was bomber by the Students for a Democratic Society in retaliation for the killing of six members of the Symbionese Liberation Army by police.
13 June 1974 — The International Headquarters of the Gulf Oil Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was bombed by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest the company’s involvement in Angola and accusing the company of assisting the Portuguese government to keep Angola as a colonial possession.
10 September 1974 — The offices of the Anaconda American brass Company in Oakland California were bombed by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest the company’s actions in Chile.
17 October 1974 — A meeting of the Boston Massachusetts School Committee is “stinkbombed” by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest busing.
28 January 1975 — The Students for a Democratic Society claims responsibility for an explosion in a bathroom at the U.S. Department of State in Washington.
28 January 1975 — Students for a Democratic Society attempted to bomb the Agency for International Development and the US Defense Department offices in Oakland, California, however, the device failed to detonate.
16 June 1975 — The Banco de Ponce in new York City is bombed by Students for a Democratic Society to show solidarity with striking workers in Puerto Rico.
5 September 1975 — The national headquarters of the Kennecott Copper Company in Salt Lake City, Utah was bombed by the Students for a Democratic Society to protest the company’s role in the overthrow of President Allende of Chile.

Of course the biggest thing wrong is that they managed to get too many of their bombs to the intended targets rather than blowing their fool selves up more regularly.

  172. ProggressiveHero says:

Well you people all just admitted how old you were thus validating my earlier point. That if you compare the general age of a welcome home the troops rally to an anti-war rally you will see all the fossils at the we “love” our fascist troops rally. All the younger crowd is at the anti-war rally. Thus proving you people are a dying breed, good riddance to nationalistic, one nation under a christian god, we invade everyone not like us, I love my country no matter what, bullshit.

  173. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

Ok. No more bagging on “Hero.”

He’s obviously retarded or has some kind of closed head injury (and has to wear that Obama bike helemet anytime he leaves his parents basement).

It’s just not nice to make fun of “special” people.

  174. Dan Collins says:

Yes, PH, you created yourself. You deserve what you have. You owe nobody.

    Fuck off.

  175. Good Lt. says:

    >>If we have to pay more so people do not drive huge ass SUV’s then I am all for it.

I’m not. I don’t drive an SUV, retard. ANd neither to the majority of drivers in the US. Nowhere near it. You do realize this, right? The people own cars OTHER than SUVs? How many miles does Algore and the Eco-Brigade of morons burn each year? More than me. More than you. More than many, many, many of us combined. Start with the real violators if an environmental-driven witch hunt is you motive.

The world is not a Captain Planet cartoon, you know. Your Democrat policies are hurting the poor, middle class, and the economy.

    >>Oil is destroying the enviornment.

So is Algore’s house – and that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all of the lear-jet leftists, limo-driving, gas-guzzling, energy-hogging Hollywood morons who claim to be “green,” but use enough power, consume enough, and produce enough waste for 100 average Americans.

  179. RTO Trainer says:

“Carter was ahead of his time, if we had enacted his energy policy all those years ago we would not be where we are today with 4 dollar a gallon gas.”

  186. cranky-d says:

Most of us don’t go to those sites to read their drivel either, except maybe for a laugh. So why would you expect us to put up with it being spewed here without saying anything? Feel free to continue with the pathetic comments, but don’t expect that people won’t respond to it.

  187. ProggressiveHero says:

Well jesus christ we are now back to the parody meme again… I guess things come full circle. By the way GoodLt if I learned all my lessons from braindead hippies then you learned all your nationalistic chrypto fascist beliefs in god camp.

  188. cranky-d says:

Okay, if you’re not a parody, what do you want? Why bother commenting? I really wonder what the motivation is.

  189. ProggressiveHero says:

I have ghosted here and on websites such as LGF, Redstate, Newsbusters, GatewayPundit, and a few others I would not care to mention. They all made me vomit, especially the comments sections which were vile. I just wonder how people like you still think the way you do when the world has changed alot since 1940 where you could still oppress blacks and women and anyone of another religion. Your time has passed you by. I just wonder why you bitterly cling to it still. It was never the good ol days to anyone other than white christian males with fantasies of being a modern day version of Al Bundy.

  191. cranky-d says:

No, you don’t want to understand. You want to stand aside, mock, and generally feel good about holding the political position you hold, and you make a pretense of “trying to understand” when you really have no intention of even trying. That is obvious from your comment at 192. Everything in that comment that you attribute to the writers and commenters here is a strawman. You are a parody, and a very complete one at that, whether you know it or not.

So, either Bravo! for being so good at faking it, or sorry your brain has been filled with lies and half-truths.

  205. “Let’s fight the good fight in Afganistan,” Obama

hmmmm, this gets me thinking…. perhaps O! is more okay with the current situation in Iraq than we think. he hasn’t visited Iraq since 2006 and I haven’t been able to find where he’s ever visited Afghanistan. sooooo, maybe he just doesn’t visit places that don’t need his HOPEYCHANGEYNESS!!! they have enough light already thankyouverymuch.

I would invite him to visit my Brigade, anytime, anyplace. Of course, the “place” is Iraq – right now. That might be a bit of a problem for said ‘hero’. Heh, indeed, as another might have written.

I suggest you “up” the level of your discourse. As it is, you are spouting lefty talking points without really making any form of argument. In addition, your world-view appears to be stuck in a form of socialism which is repugnant because it infringes on our rights and is an utter failure wherever it is tried.

  231. Carin- says:

In addition, you should ask for your money regarding those college gov classes. They didn’t teach. They indoctrinated. Perhaps we could assemble a reading list for you?

To be honest I want to understand you people. Your thoughts are honestly really foreign to me.

I still vote parody, but in any case if you really want to understand another group of people then you should drop some of your more base notions about them. Every time you describe something that is conservative or right wing you do so in specifically negative terms. I think it’s likely that, were you not playing, that you will never be anything other than dependent on that sort of thinking because it allows you to avoid actually having to think about the world as it is, and allows you to safely associate yourself as one of the good guys without ever having to actually do anything.

What you call thinking is likely nothing more than an exercise in mental self preservation. You could shed this, and actually grow up intellectually, but it would require that you get over yourself.

If you’re serious about this comment, then this is the critical moment for the rest of your political life. If you say “ah, these bozos disagree with my college professors so they must be a bunch of yahoos” and go back to the talking points they fed you, then you’ll be a lefty. If you decide to work through things yourself and seek more information, you’ll probably become a centrist or even (gasp) a conservative.

I was a complete lefty after college. My personal process began a few years later with the OJ verdict. I drifted rightward until 9/11. After that, I did a LOT of research on Islam, which led me to do a lot more research on American history and American politics both right and left. I discovered that I was fed a load of CRAP in college when it came to things political. Yes, Vietnam WAS a good thing in the long view of ending the cold war. Yes, we DID win every single battle in that war. Yes, it WAS the liberals at home that lost that war when it looked like we would finally win. Look at interviews with former VC and NVA, as well as the soviets and Cambodians. Google is your friend.

I am now NOT a republican, but I AM a conservative-leaning independent. Both parties suck…the Dems more so lately. The more left-leaning an entity is, the more likely it is utopian and self-delusional. Kos, TalkLeft, Counterpunch, the comments section of the WaPo, they’re all left-leaning to one degree or another.

If Liberals would get back to what liberalism was before Vietnam, I’d probably lean back toward them. But they’ve redefined liberalism beyond recognition since then.

  252. Cowboy says:

right now I am batting .023

You go right ahead with your lefty talking points…

but leave my Reds out of this discussion!!!

We haven’t heard from Vercingetorix in awhile, and he was quite the jokester if you will recall. Just sayin’.

I believe I’ve had to spend time with some of these sorts in the past. They were sniffing at someone for drinking the wrong kind of wine out of the wrong kind of glass. I fear for their safety.

  256. ProggHero says:

What about Noam Chomsky? I know it is left of center but the guy is an intellectual.

  257. Slartibartfast says:

Hey, how about that Ward Churchill guy? Wasn’t he an authentic intellectual?

  258. ProggHero says:

No even I draw the line at comparing the people killed in the WTC to Goebbels.

  259. Slartibartfast says:

    Eichmann, actually.

    Speaking of SDS, though…

  260. JD says:

BMoe – Verc is great, but no way could he keep that going without puking.

  261. Slartibartfast says:

…but this brings up the question of where you do draw the line, ProggHero. Not Eichmanns, but some slightly lesser variety of Nazi?

  262. ProggHero says:

Yeah I have felt like vomiting a couple times in the last day or two.

  263. grouch says:

Noam is left leaning? Who knew?
This guy is having you all on.

  264. Slartibartfast says:

Sorry I skipped cliche day in my Gov 101 class.

He’s a pseudo-intellectual — a facile speaker who cherry-picks his data and regurgitates the usual suspects to come to a pre-conceived conclusion. He suffers from the not-uncommon delusion that life was somehow intended to be fair and wheezes incessently on the matter.

  267. SGT Ted says:

SGT Ted, are you still in?

Yes I am. 25 years and still loving it.

By cliche day, do you mean the first and second semesters?

  270. CArin -BONC says:

Noam Chomsky is also a big fat hypocrite. Spouts his socialist garbage, but when it comes to his money and his family- it’s hands off. That’s the problem with socialist (and most environmentalists) – they want to tell YOU how to live, but don’t look behind the curtain.

  271. Ric Locke says:

A specific answer: Noam Chomsky came to prominence as a result of his work in linguistics. He produced a very significant, then-plausible theory about how language works at a deep level, and defended it strongly and cleverly. As a result he became one of the leading lights of that subject, and since his theory resounds deeply with Leftist ideas of mutable language his theory was incorporated wholesale into Leftist academic thought. That gave him an opening to recount his social and economic theories, which the Left also celebrated. It is a classic case of trying to extend expertise in one domain into an unrelated one, like an expert in the life cycle of nematodes expounding on cosmology and depending on his lab coat to lend authority to his opinions.

Trouble is, there has been a lot of work done in the computer science community since then on natural language recognition and translation. If you’ve tried to call a major company lately you have encountered one result — phone robots that “understand” simple phrases and use them to direct your call appropriately — and of course there’s babelfish and other computerized translators. Chomsky’s linguistic theories mesh perfectly with computer programming, so the initial efforts of Artificial Intelligence researchers were based almost entirely upon them.

None of the programs based on Chomsky’s theories works worth a damn, and none of the successful AI programs proceed from Chomskyian assumptions. The few bits of Chomskyism that do work turn out to be cribbed from other theorists, almost entirely without attribution. It’s as if you had a major, Einstein-level theory in physics that looked great and held together within itself, but when you tried to build a bridge based on that theory it fell down immediately, and the bits that survived turned out to come from some miserable grad student whose name doesn’t appear anywhere.

And if you look closely, you will discover that Chomsky himself offers no particularly spirited defense of his own bullshit — he has “moved on”, so to speak, and nowadays is exclusively a pseudoMarxist Leftist guru.

    Regards,
    Ric

Ric, do you have a link for that? Not that I’m questioning you, just interested in reading more.
