Dems 2008: Clinton resumes push to seat FL & MI delegates [Karl]

In this morning’s speculation, I suggested that Sen. Hillary Clinton might make trouble for the Democratic convention in a number of ways, including this:

She could champion the causes of Florida and Michigan and seek reform of the rules for timing contests and the sanctions imposed upon those who break them.

A few hours later, Jake Tapper of ABCNews reports that Clinton has already started:

This morning brings the news that the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, has launched a new website where they are announcing how they are officially preparing to make the case that the rules of the Democratic nomination process should be changed.

Tapper calls this “clear evidence (not that there was any mystery about it) that the Clinton campaign is trying to change the rules in the middle of the game.”  That characterization ignores the double-standard applied by the DNC in stripping Michigan and Florida of all of its delegates, while doing nothing about Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina for violating the same rule.  But I digress.

Matthew Yglesias has a different objection:

See, for example, this sort of bulls–t isn’t the kind of thing they need to be wasting their time on. Persuade some people to vote for you!

This is a much better point, which is why I previously considered the issue in the context of ther convention.  The main response to Yglesias is that the Clinton campaign needs every delegate it can possibly get and thus should pursue the Michigan/Florida issue and persuade more people to vote for her.  However, a likely reply would be that the Clinton campaign currently seems incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time, which is hard to dispute.

    She will not lose gracefully.

Oh, this could get very ugly.

This is a start towards what I pray for every night. Thank you, Allah.

  4. Yeah Ace says the stake is in her heart, I don’t buy it. She can still cause horrible problems and fight in the convention. I don’t see her winning, but I see her not going out peaceably. She might even make herself so obnoxious Obama won’t consider her for a SCOTUS nomination.

Hey PWs, I posted this same question a month back on HubDub.com – pretty interesting trending over the past month re opinions on this topic.

    Yes! Yes!!
I think this is great news. Open warfare and accusations of “selected, not elected” at the Dem convention. Could not make me happier. This evil bitch is like Freddy Krueger, she just won’t die!

  7. Hmmm…, so is it just Obama’s delegates that are up for grabs in a what’s mine is mine and what’s your’s is negotiable sort of way, or does this sword cut both ways?

  8. JD says:

Aren’t the Edwards, Dodd, Biden, Kucinich, and LaRouche delegates still for sale ?

  9. McGehee says:

Yeah Ace says the stake is in her heart, I don’t buy it.

A stake through her heart? What heart?

  10. Nathan says:

Is there a chance in hell that this happens? I mean, Edwards and Obama weren’t even on the ballot in those states…If Clinton steals the nomination with dirty tricks like this, I sure hope it translates into a lot of McCain votes.

  11. I think at most she can force a revote, which would cripple the DNC (great job, your attempt to force these states primaries to stay back where they were meaningless only made these states mean more than ever) and give Obama a zillion more votes.

  12. JFH says:

Y’all forget the party you’re dealing with… once Obama is in the hot seat and starts losing to McCain badly in the polls (which WILL happen), the DNC will change the rules to get a candidate that has the possibility of winning into the race (see NJ and MN for examples)

  13. happyfeet says:

JFH has a point. Obama just ain’t all that. He’s like sort of a great spokesperson for the Big Brother program. Or like he could probably get lots of people to recycle or wear their seatbelts and stuff like that cause he’s just a big hopeychangey public service announcement is all. Pretty soon people will remember that it’s during the PSAs what is the best time to go get something out of the fridge or let the dog out.

Persuade people to vote for you, eh ?

I would just point out that getting the Florida and Michigan rules changed is just Clinton trying to get the votes from the people that ALREADY voted for her, to count.

Who else did they have an opportunity to vote for, o wise one? Face it, losing gracefully is not a characteristic of the Dems, refer back to algore, Kerry, etal. The fact that Hill/Bill is attempting to get delegates seated in states that did not comport with their own party’s rules is standard operating procedure for these folks. I encourage her efforts. In fact, I would help fund those efforts.

  16. JD says:

So, I would just point out that you, and your ilk, are lying crap weasels. But since your efforts should be encouraged, I will not point that out.
