Dems 2008: The Clintons poison their own garden [Karl]

The mockery of — and anger toward — Bill Clinton’s role as hatchet man for the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton spreads further among the liberal-left, now including (but by no means limited to) Clinton’s former Secretary of Labor-turned-blogger Robert Reich and lefty journalist William Greider.

Although I have hypothesized that a psychological line may get crossed that permanently erodes — to some degree — the Clintonian style of politics (particularly targeted by Reich), there is the counter-argument that the liberal-left will rally back to the Clintons if these tactics win Hillary the Democratic nomination for president.  Yet I still wonder – after declaring something a laughing-stock, won’t this growing band on the Left fear making a laughing-stock of themselves?

Anyone who can simultaneously believe that affirmative action policies do not discriminate racially and that ‘color-blind’ policies do will be able to rationalize a return to that sty.

  2. Comment by cranky-d on 1/24 @ 11:03 pm #

There is really nothing that they cannot deny or rationalize away.

Why is Bill Clinton doing this? Isn’t this what Sid Blumenthal is for?

The worst aspect about Bill Clinton’s role in this is that he is running for president. It is no exaggeration to say that he is virtually campaigning for the presidency again. [...]

No one has the moral authority to call the Clintons on their primary offense.

Bill Clinton is campaigning for the presidency again.

I said no one has the “moral authority” because his is a moral offense, and not a technical, legal offense. The 22nd Amendment merely prohibits being “elected to the office office of the President more than twice.” This means that Bill Clinton can legally campaign for the presidency; he just can’t be elected to it. The authors of the Amendment never envisioned that blatantly Peronist tactics would come to their enlightened democracy so soon. (And just wait for the new improved Peronist Homeland Security!)

And from the email I just got from the Obama camp:

In the past week or two, another candidate’s spouse has been getting an awful lot of attention.

We knew getting into this race that Barack would be competing with Senator Clinton and President Clinton at the same time.

We expected that Bill Clinton would tout his record from the nineties and talk about Hillary’s role in his past success. That’s a fair approach and a challenge we are prepared to face.

What we didn’t expect, at least not from our fellow Democrats, are the win-at-all-costs tactics we’ve seen recently. We didn’t expect misleading accusations that willfully distort Barack’s record.

Barack Obama isn’t relying on a former President of the United States to campaign for him.

This is going to get a lot nastier.

maybe you don’t understand that the “Clinton Haters” are RIGHT WING OPERATIVES paying good money for placement in prime liberal real estate.
In Daily Kos, you won’t see regulars posting in these Hit Diaries.
Not to blow a hole in your theory or anything.

george, Robert Reich might be a bit surprised by that.

  7. Comment by Ben Wright on 1/25 @ 12:40 am #

Robert Reich is a RIGHT WING OPERATIVE?

    Well, that’s interesting.

“Clinton Haters” are RIGHT WING OPERATIVES paying good money for placement in prime liberal real estate.

and that would be liberals selling out to the Reichwing Operatives, eh?

    Oh you magnificent bastard, Rove!

Reading Tarquin is eating holes in my brain.

that’s why after reading the first comment I pretty much ignore the rest, or very lightly skim. it’s like trying not to look directly into the sun.

Oh, Bubba should have seen that coming.

The RIGHT WING now encompasses William Grieder, Jon Stewart and Ted Kennedy.

    Vastest. Conspiracy. Evah.

Frankly, hatred is ugly. And, I never could understand why people were so impressed with Bill Clinton. After seeing him stating the facts from his point of view with the aggressive press, I believe that he is really a truthfully spirited person. I am more impressed than ever. I feel that he has both a right and obligation to help his wife and his country.

“After seeing him stating the facts from his point of view”

He does some of that. Other times he flat out makes shit up and lies through his teeth while daring people not to believe him. That’s the sort of annoying crap that the media lets him get away with, Santa.

Clinton was sent to America by God. He is America’s stupid meter. The meter read 43% in ‘92. Perot was sent to America by God. Some sort of punishment, I would guess.

“truthfully spirited”… almost as good as stating facts from a point of view.

If they cannot rule, then no one shall rule.
Hmmm. Does anyone know when the bunker scene comes up?

  22. Comment by Enoch_Root on 1/25 @ 9:38 am #

dunno – was speaking to a friend who is all about Obama yesterday… and while he lamented the Clinton attacks, he could not… would not say a bad word about the Clintons other than “it’s just politics”… losely translated to “everyone does it”. But then he quickly added that he did not agree that the Ghetto Slum Lord comment was race-baiting and that Obama will just rise above it all.

seriously problematic the liberal mind and all.

Once the Dems settle on a candidate all this will disappear down the party’s memory hole. There may remain some residual sense among some of the electorate that the chosen candidate is less than perfect, but most people will forget why they have that impression. The MSM will rally behind ANY Dem against ANY Repub, once it’s down to that choice.

Every time I see Reich sitting (ostensibly on several phone books to get to counter height for the cameras) for a TV interview, I keep wondering if he is the same dude who played one of the recurring bad guys on the old Wild, Wild West shows with Robert Conrad.

  25. Comment by McGehee on 1/25 @ 11:43 am #

Of course, when you distill truth to its spirit, you get truthiness.

    RIGHT WING OPERATIVES

Oh, the horror. The vast right winger conspiracy is kicking into gear already.

I believe that he is really a truthfully spirited person.

You can believe that the moon is made of cheese, and that midget aliens dressed like clowns routinely kidnap humans, but that does not make it so.

Kelly – Reich was the body double for Tattoo on Fantasy Island.

  27. Comment by cranky-d on 1/25 @ 12:52 pm #

I thought truthiness might be the leavings after the distillation of truth. The boiloff, as it were.

  28. Comment by McGehee on 1/25 @ 2:22 pm #

I like my truthiness at least 100 proof.

  29. Comment by kelly on 1/25 @ 3:24 pm #

Exactly, guys. Consider truthiness to be not unlike Grappa.
