Dems 2008: To Live and Die by Identity Politics [Karl]

The Politico reports on Identity-Politics-A-Palooza:

A series of comments from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband, and her supporters are spurring a racial backlash and adding a divisive edge to the presidential primary as the candidates head south to heavily African-American South Carolina.

The comments, which ranged from the New York senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement — an aide later said she misspoke — to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obama’s image in the media as a “fairy tale” — generated outrage on black radio, black blogs and cable television. And now they’ve drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.

The story mentions Harlem-based Clinton consultant Bill Lynch, Illinois State Senate President Emil Jones, and Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.   Unmentioned, but potentially more serious, is this report from the NYT:

Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the highest-ranking African-American in Congress, said he was rethinking his neutral stance in his state’s presidential primary out of disappointment at comments by Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton that he saw as diminishing the historic role of civil rights activists.

Bill Clinton called into Al Sharpton’s radio show — America’s designated spot for racial pandering — to do damage control on the “fairy tale” remark.  He may even have a point, though it is tough to muster sympathy as those who stoked the fires of political correctness and identity politics get singed by the blowback.

Moreover, even if the Clintons can soothe hurt feelings over all of the comments catalogued here yesterday, they will keep sticking their feet in it.  In Vegas yesterday, Hillary called Obama a “part-time state senator,” while one of her advisors told a reporter:

“If you have a social need, you’re with Hillary. If you want Obama to be your imaginary hip black friend and you’re young and you have no social needs, then he’s cool.”

I suspect this advisor was in charge of the effort to make Hillary more likable.

Wow. That quote says a LOT. It’s what slips out when the lefty “I’m-too-pure-to-be-racist” is under stress.

  2. Techie says:

Heh, I would laugh endless if those who live by the race card, die by the race card.

  3. B Moe says:

A little off topic, but this from the Guardian link:

…after Obama’s win in Iowa, America was debating race, congratulating itself – prematurely it now seems – on at last transcending the fatal flaw that has blighted the republic from the days of slavery to segregation.

It never ceases to amaze me the blinders toward racial issues the European elite have in regards to their own house. And how many Americans seem completely ignorant of that when they gooble this horseshit up like candy.

  4. Techie says:

Yeah, Guardian, who was the last non-white Monarch or Prime Minister?

  5. Obama campaign finally plays the race card, implies racism is behind Hillary’s criticism of The Golden Boy

We knew it would happen eventually (emphasis added):

  6. Ric Locke says:

If you don’t vote for the black guy, you’re a racist.

If you don’t vote for the woman, you’re a — what? Genderist? “Sexist” is too specific…

The obvious solution presents itself: Cynthia McKinney for President.

    How fun.

    Ric

Sister, your fabricated headline stinks. It proves the Guardian is right about politics like yours, again.

    Yer PRICKLY, PRICKLY, BMoe.

Haleluja, haleluja, for unto us a racist is born. And I don’t mean the Clintons, Barry O, nor you either, JAA.

  11. Ric Locke says:

Simon, you should post more, and perhaps in a longer form. I’m having trouble figuring you out; care to explain? For sure you aren’t one of the standard-issue Kos Kidz. It’d be easier if you learned a little trivial HTML markup so we could see more easily what you’re quoting and what your comments are.

The trouble here is that we’re dealing with symbols. If Obama wins, it’s a symbol of the waning of racist influence on American politics. If Hillary wins, it’s a symbol that the Glass Ceiling has finally been breached. If Edwards wins, it’s a symbol of the triumph of hairdressers… the problem is, it isn’t symbols we’re working toward, it’s the Presidency of the United States of America. Presidents have to do things, and a lot of the things Presidents have to do are hard. If it doesn’t look that way from where you sit, it’s either genuine ignorance on your part or the Swan Principle, serene above the surface, paddling like mad underneath.

None of the Democrats shows any faintest glimmer of capability, of ability to do the job. None of them has enough experience to show qualification to run a McDonalds, let alone the biggest single enterprise on the planet, and none of them shows any trace of awareness that there might be a need for, perhaps, on-the-job training. They’re huge personalities with nothing behind the facade.

Our guys at least have something to them. Ron Paul maybe be a fruitcake, but he’s solid fruitcake all the way through, with lots of delicious nuts. They may be crazy, they may even be (from your point of view) evil, but at least they’re solid, not millimeter-thin projection screens for the qualities you imagine might be nice for them to have.

    Regards,
    Ric

Don’t do that to me, McGehee. Keeping up with Girl Genius, Schlock Mercenary, The Whiteboard, and Something Positive is all my dialup can support.

Yeah, it’s sort of like the eventual fate of Robespierre.

It never ceases to amaze me the blinders toward racial issues the European elite have in regards to their own house.

Ah, but they have more sophisticated reasons for murdering each other, such as religion, nationality, and language.

  15. PCachu says:

Hah. Ric, if that’s your limit, my daily comics trawl would kill you. Or at least become as unto a full-time jorb.

  16. The Lost Dog says:

    “regards” yourself, Ric.

“The obvious solution presents itself: Cynthia McKinney for President.”

Oh. I don’t know. I’m not quite sure how a Barak(?), Hillary, or Chris Dodd (gag) presidency would be much different than a Ms. McKinney queenship.

I think the only difference betwwen these people and redneck Cynthia would be the use of language and patience. Except for the fact that Ms. McKinney has a little trouble with subtlety and the English language, she is, at bottom, really just like any of the Democratic candidates.

“Drop your pants and stick your butt in the air, you American capitalist pigs! Vote for ME, and I will wipe your butt from the day you are born ’til the day you die. You deserve it!”

The only difference between McKinney and the mainstream Democratic candidates is that Cynthia has not yet learned to shut her pie hole about what she really wants.

Cyn Mac’s obvious answer to her situation is to hire about 300 “daughters” to go on the “stump” (I am SO sorry. It was BEGGING me…) for Cynthia. And, serioiusly. Is she not just being honest about what the Democratic party really wants?

What’s the difference? We have The Swimmer. We have Alcee (Impeached) Hastings. We have John (fuck the first amendment) McCain. We have Harry (BDS)Reid. And….we have Hillary!

Who among these people is not on McK’s side? But unlike goofy Cynthia, they are smart enough to keep their yaps shut about their true agenda.

Give it another ten years and these Marxists will be mainstream. “Middle of the road”. They are close enough now to scare me to death.

McCain? The relentless slayer of the first amendment? RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT? What kind of idiots has this country raised? I’m pretty stupid, but not stupid enough to fall for “collectivism”, or to think thst the words: “Congress shall make no law…” don’t mean exactly what they say.

Don’t you just love the “living” Constitution?

As my A-X-W’s cup holder says: “Fuck me. Fuck you. Fuck everybody”.

    Perfect.

A Dem president? What more could a new millenium thinker ask for (besides a bunch of twats handing out “free money”?)

Gimme. Gimme. Gimme. The guiding principle of the new America. How intuitive is that, hmmmmm?

Oh. And by the way. I was great tonight…

  17. The Lost Dog says:

I am a “jerkist”. If someone is a jerk, I tend to look at them as a jerk.

Why is it that if a jerk is black, and I call this person on being a jerk, I am automatically a racist? Could it really be that there are no black jerks?

I think this “race’ crap was just a practice session for the jihadist movement. I mean, we all know that there are no Splodeydopes who are jerks. Right?

    That’s what I thought, too.

  18. Blacks Turning on Clintons?

Several prominent black leaders are assailing Bill and Hillary Clinton for their use of racially insensitive language in their campaign against Barack Obama, Ben Smith reports for The Politico.
A series of comments from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he…

  19. BJTexs says:

Wel if one lives by Identity Politics…

Personally I saw nothing wrong with Hillary’s answer, which completely echoes Ric’s point: Presidents have to do, brutha! MLK raised the racial standard for America by his tactics and his ability to preach the moral high ground. His accomplishments were only newspaper and TV fodder until a white, southern president ramrodded Civil Rights legislation over the twitching bodies of white southern Democratic crackers.

Her answer does not diminish MLK’s accomplishments in any way. It merely casts a spotlight on Obama’s easy campaign rhetoric compared to the dirty work of actually doing. Of course, the fact that Mr. & Mrs. “black like us” have to swallow the backwash is both amusing and highly entertaining.

  20. Theresa, MSgt (ret), USAF says:

As I’ve stated before, its all about race. If obamessiah doesn’t get the nomination, expect al race baiter sharpton to have his minions marching in the streets and claiming he only lost because he is “black”. And by the way, al race baiter sharpton has already gotten his photo op with obamessiah who had his arm around al. I’m sure jesse rainbow jackson will be gettin him some soon too. Once those two get involved you have got to take a step back and seriously consider what is going on. If obamessiah embraces them, does he not also embrace their politics of racism?

  21. Big Joe says:

It become real politik. While Obama’s strategy of posing as a clean politician or change agent has been working alebait his past of accepting funds from lobbyists in the past before he enters the presidential nomination race. I wonder how he get away and carried the crowd with inspirational speech, which unfortunately lacks real substance and more in symbols. Just one word, no wonder US of A only deserves another clown after Dubya.

  22. daleyrocks says:

I don’t think Jetstream Jesse has figured out who to shakedown yet or how to maximize his bucks by shaking down multiple candidates at once. Otherwise, we would have seen him out in front of a microphone in his usual place.

  23. Ali says:

Oh please, have you checked ‘Mr. Unity’s’ church out? That’s racist.

I can see Al Q telling Obama… Shariah Law or we kill all the Kenyans… what would he do?

What if muslims in the ME (the ones who love conspiracy theories), think he’s apostate? How would that help his foreign policy?

  24. Lynn M. Vejhurai says:

The Obama camp must be feeling insecure, because I consider the racial issue as the “nuke” of his bid for presidency. Mr. Obama’s supporters should support this contest to the last hour to test his readiness for presidency, and leave racial issues, which, considering racial history has been pulled out of its hiding place every time any black wants to gain the spotlight. Its a sort of a magic wand — a last resort to catch attention. To Mr. Obama’s suppporter, I say, let the games continue in order to test his strength in the combat without the killing yet.
