Overheard at a Subway sandwich shop just outside Capital Hill, March 17:
Kerry: “I tell ya’, this Zapatero endorsement is going to hurt us if we’re not careful. I mean, it’s one thing to champion pet socialist causes — that’s the luxury of being fabulously wealthy. But to come right out and call yourself a socialist like this guy does? I’m not sure that’ll play with the swing voters. Then there’s this whole terrorist capitulation thing…”
Kerry Campaign Strategist: “Okay, two things. First, you’re gonna want to lay off the paella and flan for awhile –“
Kerry: “I think I can manage that, sure –“
Kerry Campaign Strategist: “– And second, it wouldn’t hurt you to take America’s side on a couple of key international issues — at least in public. If you can find an opening, of course.”
Kerry: “Fine. But now you’re tinkering with the heart of my campaign, buddy.”
