"Free Speech" and the Academy

Evidently Columbia University, champion of free speech and the free exchange of ideas (idea 1. Genocide is bad; idea 2. In theory, yes. Unless Jews are involved), is taking certain precautions to make sure that their ostentatious commitment to “free speech” and the “free exchange of ideas” remains untroubled by the kind of annoying dissent that can turn such a signature moment of academic “tolerance” into a potential hate crime. To that end, the entire performance is being tightly controlled by doctrinaire relativists, a growing cadre of oxymoronic leftist thought police to whom free speech is only free once it is protected from the kinds of responses that might presume forcefully to challenge it. Which is why Mahmoud’s speech is closed to the public, no protest signs are permitted, and students will ask questions from index cards, with no give and take allowed.

One man’s free exchange of ideas is another man’s ambush, the argument goes — and too much freedom might lead to the kinds of nasty confrontations that would give lie to academy’s carefully cultivated veneer of dispassionate “dialoguing.”

And when all is said and done, that’s what this is all about: not only does inviting Ahmandidntfindajob serve as a PR coup and a thumb to the eye of warmongering Buscho and its simplistic “axis of Evil”-type thinking — but it shows how “civilized” can be the “free exchange of ideas” once international diplomacy is handed over to those intellectual elites who understand nuance and have been properly schooled in multiculturalist dogma.

That in order to portray this image, Columbia University is compelled to lock out non-students, screen questions, and prevent protest messages, seems an irony lost on these self-righteous “thinkers”. Either that, or they are tacitly admitting that controlling dissent is the cost of a “free exchange of ideas” and a fidelity to “free speech” — at least as it is currently understood by those who have managed to define “tolerance” as intolerance, and to cast dissenting opinions as “attacks.”

Up is down. Black is white. Rick Springfield hasn’t the slightest interest in Jesse’s girl — who rumor has it is a rather pedestrian lay.

Direct quote from the Islamic-nutjob at Columbia today:

“The freest women in the world are women in Iran”.

“Freest” – meaning free to cover their faces in public, free to be murdered by their spouses or family in “honor killings”, free to wear burkas anytime they’re in public, free to sit in the back of the mosques, free to be hung or beheaded for being lesbian, free to live a life dominated by a patriarchy…..

    Whatever.

    erg .. speach=speech .. just impeach!

Cleo, if you’re there: Do you remember this exchange from a previous thread?

Let Ahmed speak. He will be seen for what he is.
No, cleo, he won’t. He is a malignant narcissist: charming, smooth, controlled, and manipulative. He will whisper all kinds of sweet nothings into the ears of his audiences.

I quote from his CBS interview:

“I think Mr. Bush, if he wants his party to win the next election, there are cheaper ways to go about this. I can very well give him a few ideas so that the people vote for him. He should respect the American people. They should not bug the telephone conversations of their citizens,” the president said. “They should not kill the sons and daughters of the American nation. They should not squander the taxpayers’ money and give them to weapons companies. And also help the people, the victims of Katrina. People will vote for them if they do these things. What I’m saying, I am being very sincere here. I’m a Muslim. I cannot tell a lie.”

How would you characterize such an utterance, cleo? As a Revelation Of His True Character or as a collection of cynical talking points that he gleaned from the American press to show his support for the Left’s anti-war movement?

Do you really think that such a man as Ahmadinejad would ever do anything but tell manipulative lies to a crowd of unwitting admirers who, even knowing that he’d kill them on sight, love him because he hates Bush too?
Maybe you missed this from that thread, late as it was:

Why I Have A Little Crush on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

I know I’m a Jewish lesbian and he’d probably have me killed. But still, the guy speaks some blunt truths about the Bush Administration that make me swoon…

If you miss this red flag, cleo, I’m afraid there’s no hope for you. None at all.

dicentra – Well said, but the silence will be deafening, or in the alternative, semen will change the subject and point out that the Jews in Iran are treated better than anywhere else on the planet, including Israel.

“I know I’m a Jewish lesbian and he’d probably have me killed. But still, the guy speaks some blunt truths about the Bush Administration that make me swoon…”

Anyone else here want to admit in public that America’s enemies make them swoon? Line up our blunt-speaking Mahmoud with Osama, Mugabe, Castro, Chavez, and the midget Korean porn addict and go on the road with “SWOONAPALOOZA.”

Reality check lefties: The previous list of swoon initiators among the Jewish lesbian crowd will speak “blunt truths” about any future president not named George Bush as well. Because the U.S. will still unfairly be a superpower. And their respective pieces of the earth’s crust will still be pieces of the earth’s crust.

The Giants are the Jets. The Yankees are the Mets. The Knicks are the Nets.

(My all New York antonyms in honor of the collective swoon now occurring at Columbia.)

Drama queen cum student…nope, can’t think of any that are girls. And does anyone, even Semanticleo, really think Admanajjijihad gives a rat’s ass about the people of New Orleans?

  16. happyfeet says:

I’m really crushed that he didn’t mention Jena. That’s just so wrong.

  17. proudvastrightwingconspirator says:

Of course Ahmadinejad gives a rat’s ass about the people of New Orleans, at least the ones that bow to Mecca five times a day and utter “Allah is the only God and Mohammed is his prophet”.
The rest, well they can just go ahead and drown, the infidels. Spares them being decapitated later.

Where exactly are those limits specified? Not that I don’t believe it, because I do, I’d just like, for future use, some documentation to back it up. Thanks in advance.

    Free speech?

The LA Times has this to say about a guy who uses the names of dead service men and women to make a buck http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-tshirt24sep24,0,3537043.story?coll=la-home-center

Military people in action have emailed this guy and asked that if they die to please not use their names… he has refused.
The guy invented the Bush Lied bumpersticker and he puts the slogan on a t shirt that also has all the names of those who have died.
He makes a buck off of it.
He frames it as free speech and free enterprise with a righteous cause, but his argument (like all of these appeals) falls apart.
After all, Blackwater profits from protecting peace building diplomats and aid workers from murderers and extortionists.
Halliburton, provided food, water and power to thousands the list goes on.

Columbia’s latest is just another salvo of self justification of an overdetermined set of values from the left

  20. Septentrio says:

Thanks Jeff, but I’m still missing something. I’m seeing that it’s closed to the public and the “no give and take” (ample time and all that jazz), but where are the other two restrictions specifically laid out?

I’m not trying to be a thorn here, I just want to use this in an inevitable classroom discussion with an ideologically opposed professor (a member of that “growing cadre” you mentioned in your original post) who will press me for evidence.

  21. Jeff G. says:

Well, I got it from Allah, but I’ve emailed him and asked him for more cites. Will post his response here later when I’m done working out, provided he’s gotten back to me by then.

I recognize sarcasm when I see it….most of the time.

I just thought this would be a good time to ask if any of you guys ever saw the video of Jim Gilchrist being bumrushed off the stage by lefty students at CU. Video of American citizen Gilchrist and American enemy Ahmagitajob ought to be posted side by side on somebody’s blog. So that free speech advocates might have the opportunity to compare and contrast…….and mudwrestle in their own hypocracy.
