Taking Obama’s fundamental transformation of America and dialing it up to eleven …
WASHINGTON—Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose liberal call to action has propelled his long-shot presidential campaign, is proposing an array of new programs that would amount to the largest peacetime expansion of government in modern American history.
In all, he backs at least $18 trillion in new spending over a decade, according to a tally by The Wall Street Journal, a sum that alarms conservatives and gives even many Democrats pause. Mr. Sanders sees the money as going to essential government services at a time of increasing strain on the middle class.
His agenda includes an estimated $15 trillion for a government-run health-care program that covers every American, plus large sums to rebuild roads and bridges, expand Social Security and make tuition free at public colleges.
To pay for it, Mr. Sanders, a Vermont independent running for the Democratic nomination, has so far detailed tax increases that could bring in as much as $6.5 trillion over 10 years, according to his staff.
A campaign aide said additional tax proposals would be offered to offset the cost of some, and possibly all, of his health program. A Democratic proposal for such a “single-payer” health plan, now in Congress, would be funded in part through a new payroll tax on employers and workers, with the trade-off being that employers would no longer have to pay for or arrange their workers’ insurance. […]
The Sanders program amounts to increasing total federal spending by about one-third—to a projected $68 trillion or so over 10 years.
For many years, government spending has equaled about 20% of gross domestic product annually; his proposals would increase that to about 30% in their first year. As a share of the economy, that would represent a bigger increase in government spending than the New Deal or Great Society and is surpassed in modern history only by the World War II military buildup.
When you realize that an increasing number of voters tend to select candidates on the basis of who can give them more Free Stuff, I suspect Sanders would win in a landslide.
At least the Vikings had the decency to rob & plunder the French and English now and again.
O/T observation from the debate:
Gov Kasich is a whiny girly man!
Thar is all.
Bush looks like he wants his Dad to jump in and stand up to the Donald
Back on topic:
No worries the Bern is gonna do away with those pesky insurance payments
And I bet he’s gonna build us a big enough waiting room to join the Veterans that are already in line.
WTF?
Tapper jusr C-blocked Ted Cruz on Climate change.
Trump seems to have a spell on the moderators.
Trump fucked up on the vaccine question … Dr Carson even refused to be baited into attacking him and gave Trump an “out” and Trump still blew it.
oh good lord
Carson refuted the tie between vaccinations and autism, but agreed vaccinations should be used judiciously which basically validated Trumps concerns.
I think Trumps only bad spot was during the Iraq war debate, he was pretty unfair to W. Is the only time HE made me cring.
They all made me cring at one time or another, except maybe Walker ‘cuz he didn’t say a lot.
There were some bombs that had me cracking up too.
At the end there, when the jet behind them and Reagan led up the the question about what they would like their legacy to be, and the Donald said ‘you’re going to see something very special’ , I nearly died laughing.
What the fuck is with Jeb wanting to put Thatcher on the AMERICAN $10 bill!?
Fucking NWO fuck thinks he can inspire Americans?
Trump refused to back off the “vaccines cause autism”
Carson and Paul were right on the science and reasonable on allowing flexibility on vaccines that don’t involve serious contagious diseases – also the HOW of vaccines, not the “whether or not”.
he was pretty unfair to W
When Trump went to the Blame Boooosh for the current fall of Iraq I wanted to reach through the radio and thump him.
democrat stalking horse
Well, Trump said he is not anti-vaccine, and he was against invading Iraq in 2003. I didn’t hear him say Bush was at fault for the current fall of Iraq.
Personally, Walker is the only one that my opinion of changed, for the better.
‘Cuz of how he didn’t say anything that made me cring…
Christy moved up a few points for me, not sure why, he just seems like he could do the job (ducks). Rubio is good. Maybe they are RINOs but, at least they are not socialists.
Like I have said before, I would put up with a lot as long as the president put country first and leaving states alone would be a plus. You know, all that constitutional stuff Obama ignores.
Of course I think anyone one of the Rs can do a better job than any of the D losers they have lined up.
Team Rove lurves them some unelectable socialist Dems. It makes their job of selling unelectable milquetoast Rs in the primary so much easier.
Er, well, it used to…
Agree, a conservative vote should be anti-Rove as much as anti-D.
