“Drag queens banned from Pride event ‘because they may offend transgender people'” [Darleen Click]

Log this as another fine example of Poe’s Law in action

Drag queens have been banned from performing at a Pride event in case they offend transgender people.

Organisers of Free Pride Glasgow, which bills itself as an ‘anti-commercialist’ alternative to the Scottish city’s main Pride event, have announced the controversial ban.

Despite the fact that drag queens have been closely associated with Pride celebrations for most of their history, they will not be allowed to appear at the event next month in case they cause offence.

A statement from the organisers said: “After much discussion, the trans and non binary caucus decided not to have drag acts perform at the event.

“This does not mean that people of any gender can’t wear what they want to the event, we simply won’t be having any self-described drag acts perform at our Free Pride Event on August 22.” […]

“The decision was taken by transgender individuals who were uncomfortable with having drag performances at the event. It was felt that it would make some of those who were transgender or questioning their gender uncomfortable.”

I love an excuse to make popcorn.

Don’t you love the ‘be careful what you wish for’ scenario. If offense is the excuse for everything, everything is offensive to someone. The perfect world exists when only one person is in it.

So, no showgirls at pride events. Awesome.

By the way, what the eff do “transgender” people have to do with gay people? Gays, and most drag queens I have known (and I have known quite a few), generally do not have body dysmorphic disorders. The drag queens just like to dress up. Very few go for permanent alterations.

They should have stopped at LGB and let the rest of the alphabet people find their own way.

Cranky, by bringing in the rest of the ‘alphabet’ they were able to boost their numbers from 2% to almost 3%.

this is a very good question

trannies are very sui generis i think

    they’re like komodo dragons

  5. Holy moly. And I thought Baptists were easily offended.

Old joke time: A Baptist was rescued after being stranded on the proverbial desert island for several months. (I believe that a three hour tour was involved.) His rescuers noticed that he had built three huts during his stay, and asked about them.

“Well, that one is my house. That one over there is my church.”

What about the third one, the rescuers asked.

“Well, that is the church I used to attend.”

It gets better. they changed their minds, and decided to allow trans drag queens to perform, and only ban cis drag queens instead.

One has to wonder how exactly they check to ensure that a given drag queen is truly trans and not a cis identifying as a trans, or just a faux trans.

Can we go back to the days when the only question about a tranny was whether it needed a clutch?

  9. bgbear says:

I asked awhile back why weren’t drag queens seen as offensive like black face. The response I got was something about art. I am sure Jolson thought he was an artist as well.

Why the “T” ? Because being tolerant of openly gay was not enough of a wedge issue anymore. They had to add transgender to create new “bigots”.

thank goodness the supreme court clarified everything.

Not sure that would work, I am reasonably certain Bruce Jenner’s doc would say he is a trans, and Bruce says he is a trans, but he still has his twig and berries and claims to like women which is awfully cis of him regardless of what he looks like.

Does anybody happen to know the etymology of the “drag” in drag queen?

A good question. A quick perusal of a few sites has it as coming from the acronym Dressed As A Girl, but that seems a bit strained. Another explanation was that it came from the theatre of the late 1800s and men portraying women for comedic effect dressed in exaggerated women’s garb that dragged on the ground as was the fashion in the day for women, whereas men wore an onion tied to the belt.

The latter is the origin of the expression, “Taking a leek”.

And here I thought it had something to do with the earliest drag performers dressing up in big floofy French Whore outfits and then seeing who could run a 1/4 mile in the quickest time…

All my cars have had manual transmission. That’s me celebrating my masculine side.

  17. bgbear says:

I was a clutch person until the daily commute 1 hr each way convinced me I deserved a little luxury with my next car purchase.

That raises the question of whether trannies have clutch purses.

    Shift that stick!

  20. dicentra says:

Commutes with a stick are a problem only in stop-n-go traffic.

My commutes are always against rush-hour traffic and at off hours, so win-win!

  21. From Wikipedia:
The etymology of the term “drag queen” is disputed. The term drag queen occurred in Polari, a subset of English slang that was popular in some gay communities in the early part of the 20th century. Its first recorded use to refer to actors dressed in women’s clothing is from 1870.[1]

A folk etymology is that drag is an acronym of “Dressed Resembling A Girl” in description of male theatrical transvestism.

Queen may refer to the trait of affected royalty found in the personalities of many who do drag (whether this is their normal personality or a character created for the stage). It is also related to the Old English word “quean” or cwene, which originally simply meant “woman”, then was later used as a label both for promiscuous women and gay men (see Oxford English Dictionary definition number 3 for “queen”).

Drag as a term referring to women’s clothing worn by men has less clear origins. According to one theory, it was used in reference to transvestites at least as early as the 18th century, owing to the tendency of their skirts to drag on the ground.[citation needed] Another possibility is that it derives from the Romani word for skirt, which appears in a number of Romani dialects of Northern Europe with forms like daraka and jendraka.[2]

Do drag racers have sticks and clutches?

The automotive parallels continue: I once read that an alternative label for a butch-type lesbian was “diesel drag.”
