As both a California native and someone whose great great grandfather was one of several family members who fought on the Union side during the Civil War, I really don’t have much of a dog in the fight over the Confederate Battle Flag.
I don’t doubt the sincerity of either side – that for most Southerners it is symbol of regional heritage and pride, and for many it is a symbol of pro-slavery and separatism. Indeed, in South Carolina the flag was revived during the Civil Rights era as part of Democrat resistance (often violent) to integration and civil rights for blacks..
I approach the issue as I do abortion — it may be legal, but because it is such flashpoint of conflicting and irreconcilable views, let the state bow out. No sponsorship or taxpayer dollars to the issue.
That is where it should end. A kind of Hyde Amendment for the Confederate Battle Flag. And to be decided by the people in those states. Not the screeching of Social Justice Brownshirts
The fascist-style book burning now in process is disgusting and alarming. Amazon and Ebay are removing all merchandise with the flag while leaving up all manner of Communist and Nazi images. Warner Bros is stripping all licensing for models and toys of the General Lee car from Dukes of Hazzard. A preening, sanctimonious New Yorker wants the film Gone With the Wind banished from the public and even Apple is removing all Civil War GAMES from its apps.
What cowardice. Let me know when Che t-shirts are banned from stores.
Let’s review how the Urge to Purge has worked out in other societies, shall we? Can anyone think of a genuinely righteous instance of a popular/political sentiment sweeping the nation wherein Undesirable Things were purged from the body public and they all lived happily ever after?
Bueller?
Ben Stein?
Anyone?
For the record, when my ancestors (all of my great-great grandparents) dissented from the federal government on the issue of marriage, they were jailed, deprived of the franchise, lied about in the press, had the standing army sent against them, and were the target of the Second Big Plank of the new Republican party, which was to purge all “primitive” practices from the country: slavery and polygamy.
In that case, they were persecuted for what they were doing—engaging in plural marriage (which they did not ask the gubmint to recognize)—whereas this time they’re going to come after us for what we’re not doing—sanctioning SSM.
Because when SCOTUS overturns all laws that require one member of each sex to participate in a marriage, every means—legal and social—will be brought to bear on the conscientious objectors, from loss of tax-exempt status for churches, exclusion from adoption services, withdrawal of accreditation and exclusion from the NCAA from dissenting universities, government contracts refused and canceled…
…because all dissenters will be LEGALLY designated “invidious discriminators” and society will (and has) designated us “haters,” meaning that all injustices committed against us—legal and social—will go unpunished and largely uncondemned.
Those who try to stand up for us will be the new “nigger lovers,” which means it will be open season on them, too.
Just to put the purgers on notice: if my ancestors had to flee to Canada to escape prison, I can hardly refuse to accept whatever sanctions, punishments, exclusions, contempt, scorn, and general persecution that you hope to heap upon me.
Bring it.
It’ll be an effing honor.

When SSM marriage started gaining ground, Mormons were the ones I thought must be laughing or crying.
