“College Apologizes for Serving Mexican Food During Sci-Fi Event” [Darleen Click]

Not The Onion:

Stevenson College is apologizing to its students for serving Mexican food during “Intergalactic” night.

In a letter sent out to students, the college apologized for having “a Mexican food buffet,” while also featuring spaceships and aliens. The college received complaints saying the combination was racist because of the association between Mexicans and illegal immigrants.

“We would never want to make a connection between individuals of Latino heritage or undocumented students and “aliens” and I am so sorry that our College Night appeared to do exactly that,” wrote Carolyn Golz who had taken this picture of the activities before the complaints: […]

After receiving complaints, Dr. Golz said that the event “demonstrated a cultural insensitivity on the part of the program planners and, though it was an unintentional mistake, I recognize that this incident caused harm within our community and negatively impacted students.”

As a result, Dr. Golz “will require cultural competence training for Programs staff, in addition to implementing mechanisms for future program planning that will ensure college programs are culturally sensitive and inclusive.”

In the letter, Dr. Golz then assures students that she is “an ally for students of color and, in particular, undocumented students.” Further, she is “committed to ensuring that student life staff receive the training necessary to make sure that this type of incident does not happen again at Stevenson.”

“I am working closing with Donnae Smith, Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion for Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) to continue to increase the cultural intelligence (CQ) of our staff,” she continues.

Dr. Golz then encourages students to report “hate” to http://reporthate.ucsc.edu/ to cut down on insensitive events like Intergalactic night.

She concludes her letter, writing, “I care about the individuals in our community and I want everyone to feel respected, included, and affirmed.

Ok, UC Santa Cruz has a reputation, even in California, as a slacker, stoner campus but still …

I want to know who it was that “complained”, because obviously they weren’t beaten enough as a child.

Dr. Golz and fellow travelers have got to go.

Sounds like sending your kid to UCSC is on par with sending your kid to a publik screwal.

Everyone except that, never to be damned enough, staff that is. Sounds like a very hostile workplace environment and one which is only going to get worse.

The “staff’ should try to get jobs on the $2.5 billion Hillary excursion tour to the White House. The tips and wages are the same but the re-education sessions are much lighter.

Okay, what food would *they* serve at an intergalactic-theme party?

  4. McGehee says:

If I were the people who staged that, I’d call the apology a small price to pay for yanking the nose of the continuously outraged.

Would I be correct in guessing that (non-Mexican) alien food would have been the appropriate
    fare ???

I am not so sure UCSC is any wackier than any other school these days. You here unbelievable stories even from Nebraska schools.

Recall that Victor David Hansen and I are both UCSC alum. Maybe the brain washing is better now.

Stevenson College was fairly “white” when I went there. The Latinos were mostly at Oakes, College V, and Kresge.

In the future, all restaurant are Taco Bell.

And the strange thing?: That no one seems to have figured out that culture is a hoax.

    But give ’em time.

  9. Stevenson College is an enclave of Soft Tyranny…run by the soft-headed.

–That’s becoming a popular trend these days in The [Former] United States Of America.

I believe a change to the menu is needed.

    1) Bread – Wheat, Gluten Free, or Unleavened. Spreads none, the cultural meanings of various spreads will certainly cause commotion. The rendered pork fat I love on a piece of toast would certainly offend the Ferengi and 10 out of 10 Muslim Romulans. So no SPREADS.

    2) Water – hot, tepid, or cold. Lemon or Lime slices available.

Charge, a mere $45 dollars per day, per attendee included with ticket price.

I think the buffet problems may be solved.

Sorry, Demolition Man has also undergone sensitivity training – all Taco Bell logos and references have been dubbed and CG’d to now read Pizza Hut. No joke.

  17. bgbear says:

I think that is just certain foreign version for markets that do not have Taco Bells but do have Pizza Huts.
