Ah, serr8d. The Carpenters and Bread were the go-to albums for all the girls in my 8th grade class. I swear, if I never again hear the dulcet tones of David Gates singing “If a picture paints a thousand words . . . ,” I will die a happy hombre.
Completely OT, and sorry for the memories thread disruption, Darleen. Isn’t it about time for the PTB to blame the miserable economy on this year’s polar vortex?
Now there’s an album for my birthday wishlist, and I think Annie Lennox is just great: feminine but not delicate, strong without being screechy, and a helluva singer without self-indulgent melisma.
As a huge David Gray fan, I absolutely adore his duet with Lennox on “Full Steam,” for his excellent 2009 album, Draw The Line:

It’s a great song for dark times like this: “Forlorn, adrift on seas of beige / In this our Golden Age…”
And just before Lincoln’s birthday passes us by in a few minutes, and in case you missed it from a few weeks ago: Leo Tolstoy’s love letter to Lincoln
