“How Hatred Became a Liberal Value”:
remember when left-liberals insisted on civility. I remember when they condemned the tactics of intimidation championed by the New Left. I remember when progressives insisted on impartiality on the part of judges, civil servants, policemen, and those who purported to be reporting the news (as opposed to espousing opinion). There were always exceptions to the rule. Dan Rather was playing tricks as early as 1963. But, when caught and exposed, these exceptions took it on the chin. Today they rarely even apologize.
I remember when liberals sported on their automobiles bumper stickers reading, “Hatred is not a Family Value.” Then, back in 2003, in The New Republic, Jonathan Chait wrote an essay explaining why it was legitimate to hate George W. Bush, and the dam burst. Civility is no longer a liberal ideal. And now – as yesterday’s armed attack on the Family Research Council in Washington, the five-hour delay in President Obama’s condemnation of the act as he calculated whether it was in his interest to comment or not, and the mainstream media’s initial reluctance to report on the event, much less highlight the activist LGBT connections of the shooter suggest – left liberals are willing to wink at violence. It may be regrettable, they think, but, like stealing elections, it is all in a good cause – and before figuring out how to respond to an outbreak of violence on the part of their allies, they pause to calculate the political consequences. You will not hear liberals arguing for a crackdown on the use of force by animal-rights activists, environmental activists, union thugs, and the Occupy movement. Instead, you will find in them a desperate hankering to pin on the Tea Party responsibility for conduct the Tea-Partiers abhor and a willingness to engage in race-baiting and talk of class warfare on a stunning scale.
The truth is that it is a short distance from the hatred preached by Jonathan Chait to assassination, and five and six years ago there was a great deal of open, public fantasizing along these lines by left liberals.
Inflammatory stuff. Provocational, even. In fact, were Mr Rahe to be gunned down as a result of writing such racist lies — and that’s what these lies are, racist, because we all know that talk of incivility and anger is really just code for “I see militant blacks crouching in the shrubbery” — left-liberals, while they can’t of course condone such violence, can nevertheless certainly understand it: after all, they can intellectualize violent events and tease out all sort of root causes and homecoming chickens aching for roost — and in that regard, sympathize with the motivation, if not the action. Because, you see, they care and they feel and they can relate.
That, and it’s okay to be intolerant of intolerance. In fact it’s encouraged. And as a caring, feeling, relating progressive, what can be more righteously cleansing than your abject, visceral hatred of horrific haters who hate? Because their racist, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, and anthropocentric hatred leaves them deserving of your righteous and goodly hatred of hate — without which you would be tacitly condoning their evil, and find yourself labeled a hater, as well.
And you’d hate for that to happen, no?

Especially when they are exclusively empowered to identify intolerance. Judge, jury and executioner, thy name is left-fascist.
It’s really conservatives and classical liberals at fault, you know. If it wasn’t for them, Republicans could be relied upon to lose like they’re supposed to.
Besides, if it wasn’t for their shared hatreds to goad them on, the Mos Eisley Cantina freak show of incompatible interests that is the modern left would degenerate into, well, a Mos Eisley Cantina freak show.
Okay.
I was listening to the car radio this morning and the drive-time host had a guest on who was talking about Dinesh D’Souza’s new movie. Guest happened to be a black person, host is white, caller black. D’Souza? Brown.
Proceed to listener calls:
Caller: Y’all white people don’t know what it’s like to live in teh ‘hood. Anybody can be makin’ up shit about Obama and throwin’ it out there. They always throwin’ it out there! (Proceeds to extoll the virtues of the Wonce which mainly have to do with Obama being black and the caller being a black who voted for him because he’s black.)
Host: (Makes mild suggestion that the caller is out of his mind)
Crosstalk.
Guest: I have lived in the ‘hood, my man. I…
Caller @#$%%!!! White man (D’Souza, presumabley) make a movie about Obama and y’all buyin’ it. @#$%!!
Guest: D’Souza isn’t white. (Repeats several times as caller raves on.)
Caller: (Out there references to Bush and Nixon)
Host: The hell? Nixon? Whatchu talkin’ about?
Caller: @#$$%^^!! &^*%$*(!!! *click*

Well, McGehee with cogent reasoning like that, who can disagree?

I got in a bit of trouble with my lesbian friends, and now my lovely bride is expressing a bit of — how shall I say? — frustration with my verbal filter (or lack thereof). I don’t understand what I did wrong. All I did was remind our friends, in the context of this recent shooting, that these conservative groups’ opinion on gay marriage was exactly the same as the President’s until He changed His mind a couple of months ago. (Okay, so I might also have asked whether they’d have the same blasé attitude if this guy shot up the White House last year when Jugears McDowngrade still had the doubleplus ungoodthink.)
Mostly I’m in trouble for refusing to back down or apologize. “Why is it okay to condone assault and arson on conservative groups and businesses, but telling the Jesuits that they don’t have to pay for birth control is a declaration of War On Women(tm)? I’m tired of biting my tongue every time you violent haters pretend that my side has a problem with violence and ignorance!”
I’m starting to think that I shouldn’t go to happy hours with my wife and her friends any more, but the truth is that I’m dying to watch them fall to pieces between now and the election. I may start holding my tongue a bit just so I don’t lose the opportunity.
Squid, many years ago I got in a full-on screaming match with a friend of my ex-husband who was an Irish National and a big supporter of the IRA. She was completely cool with blowing up those who disagreed with the IRA and all for executing them if they dared do the same. It was just inhuman to put these IRA guys in prison for their good deeds. Why, the lads were starving themselves to death in the name of Ireland.
I called her a fucking terrorist and terrorist supporter. She told me to get the fuck out of her house. Which I did and that was the end of that.
Going there.
Yeah, there.
I called her a fucking terrorist and terrorist supporter.
I thought standing up to the lesbians took chutzpah, but I got nothing on you, darlin’!
