It was 1992 when Dateline NBC aired its “investigation” of General Motors pickup trucks. It was asserted that poor design of the fuel tank resulted in explosions when the trucks where impacted in accidents. Indeed, Dateline NBC aired dramatic footage of a pickup exploding into a fireball when t-boned.
NBC had rigged the whole thing, including remotely igniting the fuel tank.
It appears that NBC is again, manufacturing “evidence” in an attempt to ignite another kind of explosion
In an NBC segment featuring George Zimmerman’s 911 call on the night of the Trayvon Martin shooting, Zimmerman is heard saying: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”
The full version, though, unfolds like this:
Zimmerman: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.”
911 operator: “Okay. And this guy, is he white black or Hispanic?”
Zimmerman: “He looks black.”
NBC’s libel just throws fuel on a fire: Al Sharpton is calling for riots, though he euphemistically says “escalation”. A Georgia High school erupts in ugly violence in the name of Trayvon. Twitter refuses to delete the Kill Zimmerman account.
Not like NBC is alone in its making the news rather than reporting it. ABC ran grainy video of Zimmerman at the police station and declared “We don’t see blood or bruises!” Ooooo… smoking gun!
Please disregard that Zimmerman was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Sistertoldjah points out that when MSNBC’s Chris Matthews decided to run the tape on Hardball, yammering how the tape is “showing no damage to this man who claimed to have been brutally beaten,” Matthews is disappointed to find out that a closeup screencap does, indeed, show injury to the back of Zimmerman’s head.
These attempts by “News” media go beyond the usual (and inexcusable) oxymoronic advocacy journalism and into direct participation of making the news.
No one was killed over the GM truck hoax. Will apologies and shuffling of personnel be enough when dead bodies appear over the “No Justice No Peace” riots ignited by media malfeasance?

I read things like this and it is bone-crushingly dissapointing. As a reporter, the violation of the rule, “You don’t make the news, you report it” is deeply dis-spiriting.
They are looking for outcomes. An utter and surpassing travesty of what I have personally worked very hard towards in my career.

As hard as they can, I don’t think they will be able to make Trayvon Martin into the new Emmett Till. Not in the eyes of anyone who read the police reports and the original news stories, who have George Zimmerman for a neighbor … and are congnizant of the true stats on interracial violence.
Which still leaves a fair number of people who will believe that Trayvon is the Emmett Till for the 2010s against any evidence to the contrary. Sigh. This is going to be a long, long summer.
So, any guesses what next week’s manufactured crisis will be? Something happening in Arizona, New Mexico or California involving illegal immigrants from Mexico will be my bet. Something that will get La Raza all hot and bothered and out screaming and yelling under protest signs and paper mache figures.
The whole idea that Trayvon Martin’s homicide was even remotely like the murder of Emmitt Till is a slap in the face to the Civil Rights Movement and to all who have and do condemn racism.

I am certain that was the reason for that three or four year old picture of him being the initial image plastered all over when the story first broke. The meme and the parallel are being pushed, consciously or unconsciously. There is a reason that the images and reports of him as a 17-year old gangsta-wanna-be are resisted as they are revealed, as well as the uncomfortable information that he was something less than a stainless, spotless honor student and trainee saint.
