"Who's in charge? Germans pull forces out of NATO as Libyan coalition falls apart"

Wait, you mean too many cooks spoil the broth? Goodness! If only we’d be warned. That too many cooks spoil the broth.

Too many chiefs and not enough Indians could not be reached for comment.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread proffered only a bitterly wry smile.

  2. mongo78 says:

Let’s just get this out of the way:

“Too many chiefs and not enough Indians”

    Racist!

I hear the Italians are throwing pasta.

  4. cranky-d says:

It’s not unilateral if you start with a few other countries and lots of good intentions, but end up having to do most if not all of it yourself. How could our President have seen this coming? It’s completely unprecedented.

  5. Shaitan says:

Seems as though the Germans have no problem getting a Cease and Desist order out to the right address in a timely manner…

  6. LBascom says:

Meanwhile, in our own country, DOJ Memo Confirms Terrorists Have Crossed the Border.

In this court filing, provided exclusively here at Pajamas Media, prosecutors admit that Dhakane, who ran a human smuggling ring based in Brazil for the Somali Al-Shabaab terrorist group, transported “violent jihadists” into the country. He stated that “he believed they would fight against the U.S. if the jihad moved from overseas locations to the U.S. mainland.”

  7. Bob Reed says:

This is no real surprise. The Germans haven’t substantively taken part in any NATO operations overseas; outside of logistical or medical services.

  8. mojo says:

“You want to put the French in charge? Seriously? Not a joke?

Ok, that’s it. Pack up, boys, we’re outta here…”

  9. DarthLevin says:

Yeah. The French and northern Africa have an awesome history. Let’s back that pony with all the QE3 cash that’s coming our way!

  10. Squid says:

I have a dream. A dream where a competent administration sends a competent Secretary of State to deliver a measured address along the lines of:

“The United States support these measures to prevent the tyrant Qadaffi from murdering any more of his people in Libya. We applaud our French and British allies for taking the lead in these efforts, recognizing that our attention is currently focused on other operations. Even so, we are pleased that we can contribute considerable air and naval resources to the allied effort. We are fortunate that our various nations’ forces have developed such good working relationships over the past several decades, as this makes our coordination efforts quite a bit easier. We respect the argument made by some NATO members that these actions in North Africa are outside of NATO’s mission of European defense, though we hope that they will reconsider their involvement in support of the courageous people of Libya and the universal human struggle for freedom. Lastly, we express our disappointment that Vlad Putin is on the side of a maniacal autocrat hell-bent on exterminating his own people. As our French partners might say, quelle suprise.

This would be followed by French and British statements to the effect that the Americans are too modest, that their involvement is critical to success, and that the West is fortunate to have an ally like the United States, who can sustain major operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and still spare resources in North Africa, while at the same time assisting our mutual friends in Japan as they dig out of their terrible natural disaster.

Of course, the idea of competent national governments gives me nightmares for a number of other reasons.

  11. LBascom says:

Not bad squid, but are we sure those “courageous people of Libya” want freedom, and not just a different dictator (or an Ayatollah)?

Who exactly are these rebels, and what do they really want? Are there statements or writings that lay it out, or are we just shooting blindly, hoping it will all work out?

I find it troubling these questions aren’t even being asked, much less answered.

  12. TaiChiWawa says:

    “Who’s in charge?”

I’ve heard Turkey has some concerns about the pecking order.

  13. Shaitan — It would appear the Germans are above the Frey.

  14. The Monster says:

Maybe the optics of Bundeswehr tanks in North Africa finally sank in.

  15. Squid says:

Who exactly are these rebels, and what do they really want?

In my dream world, the CIA laid that out for the Administration earlier.

Again with the caveat that competence=nightmares.

  16. Ernst Schreiber says:

I myself am pretty sanguine about the rebel leadership. If it turns out that the rebels are lead by some sonofabitch we can’t do business with, we just find ourselves a different sonofabitch.

Of course there’s no way in hell we’re ruthless enough to play the Great Game the way it needs to be played, greatly.

just say that they’re wwii reenactors

  18. Silver Whistle says:

just say that they’re wwii reenactors

Then we’re going to need 275,000 of them to surrender.

  19. Silver Whistle says:

I hear the Italians are throwing pasta.

Oh, the Italians are involved, Joe, just not in the way you think. Have a look at the self-propelled howitzer in the picture from the Daily Mail link in the post. I know it’s missing a few crucial bits (you can see the turret and gun in the background) but it’s still very recognisable.

  20. BuddyPC says:

Wait, you mean too many cooks spoil the broth? Goodness! If only we’d be warned. That too many cooks spoil the broth.

Just keep ’em away from the chili pot. None of this Cincinnatisquarehead style skyline crap, thank you.

  21. Ernst Schreiber says:

Three weeks to cobble something together and what? Three days to start falling apart?

The object lesson here is that, in the international community, it is the role of the United States to lead. And when we fail to play our role, bad things are almost sure to follow.

  22. cranky-d says:

I don’t see a problem with Italy selling tanks or mobile guns to Libya. Besides, the engines probably need a tuneup every 50 hours and only Italian mechanics can do it right and it also costs a bundle.

  23. Squid says:

Over the Rhine? I once hung out with Linford for an hour or so before a gig they did in Mpls years ago. Cool guy. Very arty (go fig).

  24. Silver Whistle says:

Don’t worry, cranky, this one is good stuff – the engine is finest German squarehead Motoren-und Turbinen-Union Friedrichshafen gmbh.

  25. SteveG says:

Good to see the Italians are accusing the French of having cut a deal with the rebels for oil contracts… no blood for oil… so the Italian’s are reconsidering the use of their airbases
Silvio Berlusconi couldn’t be reached for comment, buried as he is under a writhing mass of underage hookers

  26. Silver Whistle says:

Blimey, this is embarrassing. Any chance Jeff could donate the next fundraiser to the Royal Navy? We seem to have ejaculatio praecox.

  27. TmjUtah says:

Ya know, I never really understood what “horrifying” meant.

Not over a period of years at least.

The Won Everyone Was Waiting For has reduced the gravity of state sanctioned killing by uniformed armed forces to an activity best administrated by a “political committee” to be named by the remaining members of the international debating society that shamed him into doing SOMETHING …

This isn’t amateur hour. This is our country in free fall.

  28. Crimso says:

Speaking of the French and multinational efforts, I believe it was Napoleon who said he would rather fight allies than be one. And Napoleon wasn’t exactly a dumbass.

  29. Crimso says:

    Nor was he French.

  30. Stephanie says:

I love John Bolton reason 316:

Hannity asks about Obama’s 2007 comments that the constitution does not allow for president’s launching unilateral attacks without a clear and immediate danger to the US itself…

“The constitution does not bar incompetence, which is what we have here.” – Bolton on Hannity tonight.

    LULZ

  31. Squid says:

Don’t know if everyone’s seen this Garfinkle piece, but it’s a doozy. One of the best summaries of the Libyan situation that I’ve yet seen, and as a bonus, it invokes the “down the rabbit hole” trope with a much deeper understanding than most:

I do not invoke Lewis Carroll lightly. I do so in this case for a special reason: words we thought we all understood have now become encrusted with bizarre new meanings, or no meanings at all, as if our vocabulary has been hexed by Humpty Dumpty himself.

    Sound familiar?

  32. Matt says:

Wasn’t the big beef about Iraq and Afghanistan that “there wasn’t a plan”? There’s a plan in Libya?

  33. Pellegri says:

    There’s a plan in Libya?

Stand around looking like idiots; blame failure on other people.
