Ground Zero Imam to citizens of New York: "Sure, I know you don't want the mosque built on the site of jet wreckage. But we're going forward anyway, because that's the only way toward healing."

Well, maybe I’m paraphrasing a bit.

But for what it’s worth, I think I’ve caught the spirit of the thing.

  1. Drumwaster says:

If it is just a “community center”, then how is it a “freedom of religion” issue? And how about building a few churches and synagogues in Muslim countries first, rather than adding another mosque to the 100+ already in the NYC metro area (including the one just a few blocks away), never mind all across the country?

Ah, never mind, I must just be an Islamophobe, and I denounce myself pre-emptively.

  2. B Moe says:

I think we should all join in with that preacher in FL and burn 3000 Korans on 9/11 to help with the healing.

I mean, there is nothing in the Constitution says we can’t.

  3. Mikey NTH says:

    Translation: “Bite me, infidel dog.”

  4. B Moe says:

“Our name, Cordoba, was inspired by the city in Spain where Muslims, Christians and Jews co-existed in the Middle Ages during a period of great cultural enrichment created by Muslims.”

    Can’t you feel the love?

  5. Spiny Norman says:

Building his mega-mosque on that site really is a deliberate provocation, and Imam Rauf is milking the controversy for all it’s worth. He’s in the same class as Al Sharpton…

  6. Spiny Norman says:

“Our name, Cordoba, was inspired by the city in Spain where Muslims, Christians and Jews co-existed in the Middle Ages during a period of great cultural enrichment created by Muslims.”

After the conquering Muslims destroyed all the Christian churches and commandeered the St. Vincent cathedral and converted it to a mosque. Yeah, they “coexisted” alright – in much the same way as blacks and whites “coexisted” in the Jim Crow South.

  7. Ernst Schreiber says:

B Moe gets it. The only difference between the FL jagoff and the NY jagoff is that the FL jagoff hasn’t learned how to couch his actions in the comforting disemblances of liberalspeak.

It’s the 9/11 memorial bonfire intended to promote mutual understanding.

  8. Ella says:

In fairness to the Florida guy, I don’t think he cares about mutual understanding. He just wants to shout “F*** you!” at Muslims.

That’s only a byproduct of what the Muslims are doing. They really want to conquer and make their enemies grovel, and Orwell-like they coat it in platitudes (I suspect they appreciate the irony).

  9. sdferr says:

“He just wants to shout “F*** you!” at Muslims.”

Oh. I thought he was going for “I am an imbecile!”

  10. Spiny Norman says:

Like Imam Rauf, Rev. Terry Jones is a concrete example of “just because the Constitution says you can, doesn’t mean you should.” They’re both jackasses, the only difference is that the Imam has major political backing…

  11. sdferr says:

There is another difference Spiny and one which doesn’t exactly work to the Rev.’s benefit.

  12. Ernst Schreiber says:

I respectfully disagree Ella. The good reverend with his screaming congregation and the islamists screaming back at them understand each other perfectly.

  13. irongrampa says:

Fuck this idiot mosque, fuck the idiots proposing it, and fuck the idiots supporting it.

And screw the idea we have to show “tolerance” to our Muslim brethren on the matter. The fact there hasn’t been country-wide persecution and harassment of Muslims post 9-11 says all that needs be spoken about tolerance.

I hit my bullshit limit on the entire sorry mess.

  14. 11B40 says:

    Greetings:

Welcome to Muslimthink. The arc of justice is long but it bends toward Mecca, no ???

  15. Carin says:

the arc of justice is long but it bends toward Mecca, no ???

    bah ahhh hhaaaaa haaaa …

  16. Joe says:

I am not a big fan of book burnings, but maybe that Florida pastor is on to something. Let’s sit around the campfire and let the healing begin.

  17. Joe says:

The arc of the cock is long, but it bends towards a cock slap.

  18. Silver Whistle says:

I am very sensitive to the feelings of the families of victims of 9/11, as are my fellow leaders of many faiths. We will accordingly seek the support of those families, and the support of our vibrant neighborhood, as we consider the ultimate plans for the community center.

And those very families and neighborhoods said, very clearly, "You are bang out of order, sunshine. Away and do not darken our door again".

  19. mojo says:

Build away. Then hire guards. Lots and lots of guards.

  20. Pablo says:

Because it is being opposed on the basis of the community’s religion. Just like an anti-semite could oppose a JCC.

You don’t know much about the whole “Freedom” thing, do you?

  21. george smiley says:

No, Reinhardt Dozy’s book, is on line, or Richard Fletcher

  22. Silver Whistle says:

Maybe this “moneyman” critter will make a us list of approved items we’re allowed to oppose, Pablo. Perhaps there’s one on the White House website.

  23. Spiny Norman says:

Perhaps you really aren’t a sockpuppet troll and are new here, moneymen, but the majority opinion here is not that the mosque shouldn’t be built – frankly, I don’t give a fuck if he does or doesn’t – it’s where he wants to build it. That is what makes it offensive to a great many people, even some Muslims.

If it were, say… 10 blocks further away, 99.9% of the controversy would never have happened. The potential/probable Saudi funding and influence might still raise concerns, but that’s about it.

  24. Bru says:

Yeah, maybe I’m being a little harsh, but I think it shows a lack of sensitivity to begin an op-ed expressing one’s desire to build an Islamic community center in lower Manhattan by talking about my recent airplane travels: “As my flight approached America last weekend, my mind circled back to the furor that has broken out over plans to build Cordoba House, a community center in Lower Manhattan.”

  25. Spiny Norman says:

    Bru,

It appears that Imam Rauf is as tin-eared as the President. Yeah, that was bad.

  26. Pablo says:

I don’t really see much difference between people who oppose the cordoba center and that mosque in TN, not on the things that matter, at least.

Ah, why didn’t you just say that you’re not the least bit perceptive?

  27. Burning books is all a matter of context. Burn the “correct” book and people will pay to watch and cheer.

  28. sdferr says:

Burning books is always stupid. I can’t imagine a context that would make it anything else.

  29. Notice how Imam Rauf calls it “Cordoba House”. Were the news reports wrong, that the thing had been renamed “Park51”?

  30. Mikey NTH says:

    #30 Pablo:

I thought the Left was supposed to be nuanced.

  31. Oh, sdferr…you are so mercifully free of the ravages of hypocrisy…

Kidding aside, I agree: book burning is barbarous. But if that pastor were to, oh, burn copies of Atlas Shrugged because he believes it has hindered President Lightworker’s agenda, then he’d get a more respectful mention from some quarters.

  32. sdferr says:

“. . . then he’d get a more respectful mention from some quarters.”

Yes he would, and this would stand as evidence of the stupidity of those quarters.

  33. Joe says:

Book burning is barbarous. But TSI is right, if the books being burned are not on the left’s reading list, they tend to dial down the outrage to 0.0.

But hey, free speech is free speech. Maybe Iman Rauf can go down to Florida and try to build some bridges with Pastor Terry Jones.

  34. bh says:

I’d support book burning if it was my book.

Then I’d go on TV and taunt them that many still remained in local book stores in perfectly good condition.

  35. sdferr says:

Let them try to burn my book How to Dismantle a Bureaucracy bh.

  36. bh says:

Have to figure out a way to get some royalties out of it, sdferr. This whole book burning thing is a bit silly otherwise.

  37. sdferr says:

My royalties are built right into the acceptance of the book’s message bh. The farther the message carries the day, the more of my own money I’ll get to keep.

  38. Joe says:

Has Glenn Reynolds figured out how to get a commission from Amazon for every Koran burned? Because that could be potentially profitable!

  39. Silver Whistle says:

Why on earth would you burn Korans when they make such brilliant loft insulation?

  40. bh says:

    Fascinating link, SW. Thanks.

  41. Abe Froman says:

The things that amuse meya would cause narcolepsy in a sea monkey.

  42. Joe says:

Somehow I doubt this advice will be followed.

  43. Silver Whistle says:

    Typical German, bh. No nuance.

  44. bh says:

I’d never even heard of this, SW.

  45. Silver Whistle says:

Don’t spread it around, bh. Hush hush. Might be racist, or something.

  46. geoffb says:

Has it been reported what language the Korans he will burn are printed in?

  47. ThomasD says:

If that pastor has a lick of sense he’ll get all those cameras gathered around, and as a ‘warm-up’ to the burning he’ll begin to recite English translation of select Koranic verses. Some of the good stuff – wife beating, lying to your opponents, death to the infidel, etc.

Then he says something to effect that Islam is already a flaming lie and sure doesn’t need his help so he’s hereby ending the event.

  48. newrouter says:

moe was the james lee of his day

  49. newrouter says:

the pastor should freeze the wholey koran in liquid nitrogen and smash it

  50. JD says:

I wonder how many names meya plans on getting banned under?

  51. newrouter says:

jd this islam religion is it a good thing?

  52. JD says:

I don’t really have a problem with the religion, newrouter. I have several Iranian Muslim relatives, and near as I can tell, they don’t have any plans on blowing anything up, in fact, all they seem intent on doing is getting more degrees and making more money. Quelle horror.

  53. JD says:

I think burning Koran’s is silly, but it is no less silly than extremists making death threats over cartoons.

  54. newrouter says:

i too don’t thinking burning the koran is a good thing because of the carbon footprint and the pastor doesn’t have gov’t permit. that’s why freezing and smashing it aligns it with @50.
after smashing the text will only be more confused.

  56. Carin says:

Burning books is always stupid. I can’t imagine a context that would make it anything else.

I dunno. A huge bonfire/burning of Al Gore’s book would have a certain amusing irony.

  57. happyfeet says:

there’s a whole lotta excess twilight books what are just taking up space really

  58. Matt says:

Burning pictures of Mohammad might be a better compromise, since alot of people’s objections to this stunt seems to be bookburning.

  59. newrouter says:

since he doesn’t have the open burning permit maybe draw moe day and draw curly too!
