"Dems: Immigration reform would help reduce deficit"

Because a VAT tax just isn’t as fun to implement if you can’t find an additional 12 or so million people to pony up and pay it.

Plus, bonus: 12 million new (potentially Democrat) voters, instantly spawned in the name of “fiscal responsibility”! What’s not to like? From the Hill:

Democrats want immigration reform on the table as the White House fiscal commission examines ways to reduce deficits, saying there is a “credible connection” between the issue and the country’s fiscal situation.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President Andy Stern and Rep. Xavier Becerra (Calif.), both Democrats on the bipartisan fiscal commission, said reforms giving the 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States a chance to stay in the U.S. legally could boost the economy and thereby help pay down the debt.

In a letter sent Monday to the commission’s co-chairmen, Stern listed “comprehensive immigration reform” as one of six issues he wants the commission to address, along with entitlements, retirement security, the budget process, defense spending and the tax code.

“Our current set of circumstances has 12 million people working in this country and not maximizing their contributions to the economy,” Stern told The Hill.

Becerra, a member of the House Democratic leadership and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said there’s a “credible connection” between immigration and the country’s economic situation. Millions work in an “underground economy” in which they neither pay taxes nor contribute to entitlement programs such as Social Security, he said.

“If you’re thinking in terms of this fiscal commission and our efforts to try to get this budget realigned, it makes sense to consider something that could add tens of billions or hundreds of billions to the economy,” Becerra said in an interview.

Getting rid of the underground economy by enforcing federal illegal immigration law? Not on the table.

A “credible connection” between illegal immigration, the underground economy, and entitlements to law breakers that overtax resources and drive up costs? Not found.

Color me shocked.

Too bad for the silly godbothering racist failbot haters on the right that they didn’t get behind the amnesty push before this ideologically neutral report came out. Because then, not only would they have shown themselves to be in favor of dignity and against xenophobic hatred and scapegoating, but they wouldn’t today look like bitter clinging obstructionits willing to damage the long-term economic future of this country if it means not nationalizing a whole new group of newly tax-burdened low-wage workers.

As it stands, though, they are committed to opposition to amnesty — and so are committed to hoping America fails.

Where’s the dignity in that?

  1. Carin says:

It’s because the godbother’s hate deficit reduction.

And, it’s racist to talk about the “credible connection” between illegals undocumented workers and financial strain on 1) our health care system, 2) our criminal justice system, and 3) our school systems.

Yes, the only solution is to tax ’em with the VAT.

  2. J. "Trashman" Peden says:

Close the border, morons. Then we’ll talk. Well, at least that’s what I interpret Jimmy Swaggart and Jimmy Bakker to be saying to me – oh, and Charles Krauthammer.

  3. Carin says:

And Peggy Noonan. She said it too.

  4. happyfeet says:

Do they really really want to talk about a pro-growth approach to deficit reduction?

I don’t think they really really do.

  5. JD says:

Stern listed “comprehensive immigration reform” as one of six issues he wants the commission to address, along with entitlements, retirement security, the budget process, defense spending and the tax code.

Notice what issues he does not want to discuss?

  6. happyfeet says:

The commission has to look at oil drillings next I guess, and trade policy.

  7. Carin says:

    RACIST:

ut allowing millions of immigrants access to government services could strain state budgets and grow the national federal debt, said David Frum, who served as a speechwriter for former President George W. Bush. Frum noted a 1997 National Academy of Sciences study that estimated immigrants gave only a small boost to the economy — up to $10 billion annually – but also led to higher public costs because of the services they receive.

“Today’s illegal immigrants, in many cases, do pay Social Security taxes; they would not pay income taxes because they earn too little money and they would become eligible for a huge range of federal programs — Medicaid, food stamps … the massive health subsidies in the Obama health plan,” Frum said.

But, would they pay union dues?

  8. Carin says:

I know we’ve talked about this before, but I don’t think it can be trumpeted enough:

The commission isn’t scheduled to issue its final recommendations until December.

As in, of course, the month following November.

    Fucktards.

  9. Carin says:

    Last one:

“I just don’t want it delayed anymore,” said Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), who was arrested during an immigration protest last weekend outside the White House. “I think the commission should work forward. [There’s] not a problem with including it. It’s a win-win situation, both for immigrants and our economy.”

Fucktarded tool. Average income of an “illegal” is what? 59% of them live at or near the poverty level.

  10. dicentra says:

    obstructionits

    I know that’s a typo, but I like it. “Obstructio-nits,” as in “nit-wits.”

    Works for me.

  11. sdferr says:

“If you’re thinking in terms of this fiscal commission and our efforts to try to get this budget realigned, it makes sense to consider something that could add tens of billions or hundreds of billions to the economy,…”

If you are thinking in terms of efforts to try [HA!] to get this budget realigned, it makes sense to consider something that could subtract hundreds of billions from the budget to start with. Gee. Cut spending! What a novel idea!

    OT:

House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-Wisc.), a liberal lion first elected at the height of the Vietnam War in 1969, is set to announce Wednesday he will not seek re-election in November, according to a senior Democratic official.

    Woohoo!

  13. sdferr says:

The House couldn’t lose a more loserly loser bh. Cheers resound.

  14. bh says:

If they keep retiring from these seats, they’re going to have to defend across the board. They simply won’t have the money.

    Huzzah!

  15. J. "Trashman" Peden says:

And Peggy Noonan. She said it too.

But I done Julian Sanchez’d epistemically closed her out of conservatism a long time ago, Carin. Therefore, she is wrong!

  16. sdferr says:

According to DailyCaller, attributing to Politico:

According to Carol E. Lee and Kasie Hunt of the Politico, the White House is stepping up pressure on five key Republicans to flip and join Senate Democrats:

These are the White House’s amnesty targets among Senate Republicans. Can’t seem to get a link to go through so jes wander over and scroll down.

    — Dick Lugar of Indiana – “Friendship with Obama doesn’t extend to backing reform;”

-Judd Gregg of New Hampshire – “Wants to strengthen border security first;”

-Lisa Murkowski of Alaska as “Reform prospects not ‘favorable;’”

-Scott Brown of Massachusetts with “wants a focus on jobs instead;” and

-George LeMiuex of Florida as “Open to talking, wants to see Obama out front.”

  17. bh says:

Towards the topic, I simply don’t understand how people could be this politically foolish. VAT polls terribly. So… tie it to amnesty… which polls terribly.

I think they should consider bringing up the stimulative effect of flag burning.*

*Yes, I know, broken windows fallacy.

  18. bh says:

I predict they get no one, sdferr. And they have their own defections galore.

  19. sdferr says:

“…how people could be this politically foolish…”

I suspect this is one of those deals of the consequence of believing their own line of hooey bh, isn’t it?

Progg politico: “I’m brilliant! We’re brilliant!”

Press flack: “They’re brilliant! He’s brilliant!”

Progg politico: “See? He says we’re brilliant! And me, he says I’m brilliant!”

  20. happyfeet says:

Lisa Murkowski has to feel like Palin is just right there, on her Murkowski ass, just waiting.

  21. bh says:

The Dem motto for 2010 seems to be, “Safe seats are for pussies.”

  22. bh says:

    Epistemic closure!

  23. sdferr says:

And that motto follows on their 2009 motto “Whatever doesn’t kill me will make me stronger.”

  24. TaiChiWawa says:

I don’t know much about this immigration thing but I sure hope Lindsey Lohan has a brief conversation with the ghost of Linda Lovelace soon.*

  25. gsr says:

Yeah, just like Obamacare is going to help the deficit. Ha, ha, ha, ha……

I can see November from my house…..

  26. bh says:

    Obey press conference right now.

  27. Pablo says:

Wow. David Obey is retiring. Adios, jackass!

  28. bh says:

He’s saying one of his proudest moment was opposing the fiscally irresponsible Reagan budgets!

  29. bh says:

He follows this by saying he’s proud of the stimulus!

  30. bh says:

His only apology is that the stimulus wasn’t bigger!

  31. bh says:

Ripping on Bush tax cuts for the rich and the Iraq war and Wall Street fat cats.

That’s not fresh thinking, he says.

Says he doesn’t want a slick actor to take his seat. (Dig on Duffy (R), Real World alum and Ashland DA)

Back to ripping on tax cuts for the rich.

  32. bh says:

Health care reform, historic. Said he didn’t want to leave Congress until it passed. Shout out to Pelosi.

  33. bh says:

Extremely partisan all and all. Like a campaign speech.

(Local news keeps mentioning that his late retirement announcement really screwed the Dems. They’ve cut away from him now.)

  34. sdferr says:

Can we long for a day when a newsmedia may speak openly of a loathsome man as loathsome? Yes we can.

  35. LTC John says:

I can only say that I shan’t shed any tears, as a Soldier, to see Rep. Obey leave Congress. He was not our friend.

  36. bh says:

I doubt anyone could begrudge you that, LTC John.

  37. Pablo says:

More of a friend of Code Pink, isn’t he?

  38. bh says:

Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal’s office.

“They said we could wear it on any other day,” Daniel Galli said, “but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it’s supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today.”

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts “incendiary” that would lead to fights on campus.

That’s right. Just lie back and think of Mexico.

  42. bh says:

That is just bizarre, Pablo. Perhaps the offended students might be encouraged to make sense of why they’d feel offended over an American Flag on Cinco de Mayo.

I’m trying to imagine getting upset by seeing Mexican flags if I was in Mexico on the 4th of July.* I can’t. Really.

*Yes, I know, Cinco de Mayo isn’t Sept 16th.

  43. bh says:

I subtly capitalized the American flag and not the Mexican flag above.

Nativist! Or, just another of my gazillion typos.

  44. JD says:

Feliz cinco de quatro, racists !!!

  45. bh says:

Happy five of four to you as well, JD.

  46. JD says:

Did you catch Barcky pandering to Los Suns yesterday?

I just read Karl Rove’s column about President Civility. He failed to note that the dirty little socialist calls people that disagree with his infinite wisdom teabaggers.

  47. B Moe says:

I am going to make up some Quatro de Mustard tee shirts to sell next May 4.

Put pictures of four different jars on the front.

  48. JD says:

McGehee would like a cuarto de mayonnaise t-shirt.

  49. Bob Reed says:

I agree guys. I can’t imagine why there would be any problem. I mean, I presume the folks there celebrating Cinco de Mayo are Mexican-Americans, right? So what’s the problem?

Here on Long Island, every little community has their own Irish Day celebrations at various times during the year; a custom that surely allows for Guinness-flowing street festivals for all to travel and partake in from the local areas. Like all good festivals, there are usually parades. And while they are wearing Irish Regalia, there are always American flags prominently dispayed, in the slightly higher, and/or leading, position of respect as dicatated by custom and protocol.

Oh, and while there are mucho drunk guys, there doesn’t ever seem to be much civil disturbances occuring either.

This is what’s at the root of the identity politics disfuntion that plagues modern America, each tribe is so busy celebrating their heritage that they forget the guiding ideal; “E Pluribus Unum”…

Assimilation, putas!, it’s what’s for breakfast!

  50. JD says:

That should translate as “mayonnaise room” but I am not really all that good with my espanol.

  51. JD says:

Cinco de Mayo is not a day for patriotism.

  52. McGehee says:

WHO FILLED MY SINK WITH MAYONNAISE!!???

Great comments! I received a link from a friend about a company that is publishing a book called My American Perspective – Arizona’s Immigration Law – SB1070. They are looking for people to send in their opinions about this topic. They will be printing the book soon and want supporting and detracting opinions on the subject. Neat site, I submitted my opinion yesterday, check them out at, http://www.myamericanperspective.com
