Screw the UN [Dan Collins]

Ed Morrissey whales on them hammer and tongs this morning–just like a cetaceous smithy–and God knows they deserve it. From Fox News:

The United Nations agency that administers a school in Gaza where dozens of civilians were killed by Israeli mortar fire last week has admitted to employing terrorists to work at its Palestinian schools in the past, has no system in place to keep members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad off its payroll, and provides textbooks to children that contain hate speech and other incendiary information.

A growing chorus of critics has taken aim at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in recent years, although momentum on Capitol Hill has been slow. But last week’s incident, which Israel maintains was prompted by Hamas operatives firing mortars at Israelis from a location near the school, has prompted some lawmakers to scrutinize the U.N. agency.

Related, but slightly O/T:
But, but … Carol Browner (our new “energy czar”) has great hopes for the UN. The UN is to rule our New World Socialism:

Strengthening the United Nations is an important step in the creation of this new, democratic world society. Where there is a consensus among the major nations, significant peace-making and peace-keeping initiatives are possible. The UN specialised agencies, like the WHO, and UN organs like UNDP and UNICEF, have demonstrated that the governments and citizens of various nations can work effectively together in pursuit of common international goals

Yea … let’s strengthen the UN. What a great idea!

2. Jeffersonian says:

I’m really starting to wonder who actually won WWII and the Cold War.

3. Bob Reed says:

The UN plays the global version of the identity politics, PC phoniness, multi-cultural game that the Democrats do here at home. They publicly wail and hand-wring about the Israeli’s actions in Gaza, especially when their school is struck; all the while knowingly facilitating known terrorists and their institutionalizing of anti-semitism and anti-westernism…

But should you point out the simple fact that Hamas started this latest round or some of their despicable tactics, then you become the HATER!

It’s the same old story…Just like no member of any sainted minority victim group could possibly be racist, so too no Palestinian can be an anti-semite terrorist…

It’s just their culture, man!

4. Rob Crawford says:

I’m really starting to wonder who actually won WWII and the Cold War.

Apparently the Russian aristocracy, because the Commies wouldn’t have so many czars hanging around.

5. parsnip says:

Wow, Special Ed and Fox News together?

Tall about wingnut fabulous.

As if anything could excuse an army that knowingly fired on two schools full of children.

Talk abut sociopaths.

6. Rob Crawford says:

Yea … let’s strengthen the UN. What a great idea!

When you’re part of the over-class that takes part in the UN skimming, that profits from the corruption and enjoys the perks that go with being part of an extra-legal organization not answerable to anyone, I’m sure it does sound like a great idea.

7. Mr. Pink says:

Isn’t this the organization that was involved in funnelling billions of dollars to Saddam during the Oil for Food debacle that he would use to build palaces while his people starved? Yeah that UN.

8. Sdferr says:

I’m not keen on much of the UN and its agencies in general but I do think that they are not all “created equal” so to speak, but that some are more worth having and better behaved than others. At least I think reasonable arguments can be found for the preservation of some of them.

UNRWA, on the other hand, is the very worst of the lot and ought to be abolished. It has been the worst for decades but gets little attention when there isn’t a war going on.

9. geoffb says:

The UN, for over sixty years, working, toiling away, at receptions and parties the world over, to spread misery and suffering, in fair and equal measure, to all the proles. They need our support in this most worthy endeavor.

10. happyfeet says:

The UN doesn’t have any class. They’re really sort of just a trashy organization. It would be nice I think if they just sort of went away.

11. happyfeet says:

The UN is a lot like the UAW I think. You don’t want your family involved.

12. Andrew the Noisy says:

I’m really starting to wonder who actually won WWII and the Cold War.

We did. The question is, who are we? If you gaze into the abyss…

13. Mikey NTH says:

The tactics of Hamas are to attack, provoke a reaction, fight a bit, get the international community to get the Israelis to lay off, and then declare victory. This has worked in the past.

However, what if the Israelis just ignore the international community? What would actually happen?

(1) The Arab nations and those muslims overseas may protest, scream, march, and burn Renaults, but they aren’t actually going to do anything to help Hamas – certainly nothing like actually declare war or take a hit for them.
(2) The European nations aren’t going to hate Israel any more than they already do if Israel ignores them, and listening to them hasn’t made them like Israel any more in the past; and they certainly aren’t going to actually do anything to help Hamas.
(3) The Israeli left and peace movement is sitting this one out.

In other words, no one is going to do anything if Israel continues to pound away on Hamas. No one cares enough to do anything more than cry some crocodile tears and scream about the Jews – which they will do anyway. So Israel may as well beat on Hamas like it owes them money.

No one else was willing to die for Abyssinia – no one else will be willing to die for Gaza or Hamas.

14. DoDoGuRu says:

Is it really “whales” on them? Like an orca?

I’d always thought it was “wails” on them, like screaming.

15. parsnip says:

what if the Israelis just ignore the international community

Then all the welfare Israel receives from American and European taxpayers will get cut off?

The U.S. is going to withhold $1 billion because the continued growth of illegal Israeli immigrants sneaking into the West Bank.

It’s a start.

16. Ric Locke says:

The other day somebody, Reynolds I think, linked to a typically brain-dead NYT editorial in which the writer asked, “Are the Israelis trying to educate Hamas, or eliminate it?” He then maundered on for the usual couple of thousand words without either answering his own question or providing readers with any insight that might lead to an answer.

Clearly it never occurred to him that an answer might exist. Like monkyboy and much of the Left, the writer assumes that the whole thing is futile. “A, but B is an acceptable consolation prize” never entered his mind.

Regards,
Ric

17. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

The UN consistently perpetrates the kind of open, bald-faced evil only seen in cheesy Bond villains. UNRWA? The nation state members of their “Human Rights Commission?” Cracked Magazine couldn’t make that shit up.

I don’t despise the UNs existence so much as their grubby, diplomatically immune “Dr. Evils” concocting one after another, rubber stamped atrocities from a building on American soil.

You want to rape little girls in the Congo? You want to fondle Hamas under the table? Kill Jews? Make money off the slaughter in Sudan? Oil for Food?

Fine. Obama (and Bush too for that matter) aren’t going to do a damn thing about it. We’ll even give you our citizens tax dollars.

But, get the fuck out of New York.

Go be evil somewhere else.

I hear France is nice.

League of Democracies anyone?

18. parsnip says:

A booby prize, ric?

Kinda like all the Sunni terrorists groups the U.S. military has on its payroll in Iraq.

Including, ironically, Hamas in Iraq.

Wonder if any of that money makes its way back to Gaza?

19. happyfeet says:

My company didn’t buy the UN holiday cards this year that they’d bought every year.

That’s all I got.

20. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

“Then all the welfare Israel receives from American and European taxpayers will get cut off?”

Israel has a thriving free market economy you igit.

The “American & European (& Israeli) welfare” goes to Hamas & Fatah.

Try and keep up.

America represents roughly 30% of the foreign aid to Palestine. Israel makes up almost 40%. All Arab nations combined (including the Saudis) make up a whopping… 7%.

Real big cause for the caliphate eh, snippy?

If Hamas laid down their arms today, there would be peace tomorrow. If Israel laid down it’s arms today, they would be slaughtered to the last woman and child tomorrow.

21. parsnip says:

Israel has a thriving free market economy you igit.

Don’t be silly, Lamont, Israel is more Socialistic than Norway.

And more corrupt than Zimbabwe.

And now that it has banned Arab political parties from running in the upcoming election, it isn’t even a democracy anymore.

Time for the U.S. to cut off the welfare to Israel.

We have our own problems.

22. Sam Hall says:

Do Not Feed The Energy Creature, Lamont.

23. Slartibartfast says:

All Arab nations combined (including the Saudis) make up a whopping… 7%

It’s hard to rouse the rabble when they’re well-fed.

24. daleyrocks says:

Another day at the salt mines for snippy.

How much is Soros paying these days?

25. Andrew the Noisy says:

Israel has a thriving free market economy you igit.

Precisely. The “aid” snip refers to is for one thing and one thing only…to arm the Israelis. A significant amount of that cash ends up back in the hands of U.S. and European defense manufacturers…although they do make their own small arms.

The money distributed via UNWRA, on the other hand, mostly ends up buying Kalashnikovs and dead Jews.

So I say we stop giving cash to the Israelis juuuuust as soon as the Lower Manhattan circus stops handing it to the Palestinians.

26. N. O'Brain says:

“And more corrupt than Zimbabwe.”

Ain’t it cute how anti-semites pull shit out of their asses to smear Jews with?

What’s next, alpo, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion?

27. Mikey NTH says:

I expect the screaming from the UN, the marchers in European capitals, and in university faculty lounges world wide to increase in volume if Israel doesn’t folow the rules of this kabuki show as it always has. And I look forward to the desperation on the faces of the diplomats, youths of undetermined origin, and professors as they realize their screaming is as impotent as the League of Nations.

They can scream all they want, but none of them are actually going to do anything else to help Hamas and the Palestinians.

28. parsnip says:

Haha, No Brain,

Any citizen of Israel will tell you their government is hopelessly corrupt.

Please do continue to devalue the word “anti-semitism,” though.

People like you and Darleen have rendered it as meaningless as the term “fiscal conservative.”

29. Techie says:

Ignore the troll.

Let it screech its hate into the void.

30. N. O'Brain says:

“Comment by parsnip on 1/15 @ 11:35 am #

Still can’t spell, I see.

“Any citizen of Israel will tell you”

Is that like “some experts say..”?

“their government is hopelessly corrupt.”

Sure, snippy, just keep pulling shit out of your ass.

“Please do continue to devalue the word “anti-semitism,” though.”

No devaluation at all, alpo. I look into your ugly gnome-like face and see the shriveled soul of raving, rabid anti-semite. The brown shirt and the teeny little mustache drawn with your own feces is kind of a dead giveaway, too.

31. parsnip says:

Shriveled soul, No Brain?

How about you poor, rabid right wing extremists whose dogma forces you to defend the deliberate killing of children.

I’ve watched in amazement as the “conservative” movement has slowly slid into the amoral mess it is today.

It’s easy to see the steps, the things your leaders forced you to defend:

George Bush’s cowardice
Illegal wars
Rush Limbaugh’s drug addiction
Massive budget deficits
torture
John McCain’s adultery
etc., etc. etc.

And now you have become so twisted you’re rabidly defending the open slaughter of children.

For what?
ill

33. ginsocal says:

parsnip, you retarded shitstain, you really need to stop getting all your “information” from al-Reuters. Repeating their propaganda only makes you look increasingly stupid-a feat I didn’t think was possible.

34. Sam Hall says:

Goodbye to yet another thread…..

35. kelly says:

I’m slowly coming to the opinion that parsnip is parody.

Can anyone cling so desperately to discredited talking points and be that obtuse without specific intent? I mean, really. Rush’s drug addiction? Really? And he’s one of our “leaders?”

Well played.

36. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

Me no feed troll no mo’.

(I realize you can’t fix stupid, but can I still point and laugh?)

37. Andrew the Noisy says:

Then let’s do get back on track.

Who’d Obama tap to be his U.N. Ambassador?
What’s Hilary’s “plan” for “embracing” “diplomacy”?
Who do we have to kill to get someone in the Democratic Propaganda Department MSM to ask Obama or Clinton anything about the U.N. employing terrorists?

38. Nan says:

Does it strike anybody else as absolutely silly that number three on Parsnip’s list is Rush Limbaugh’s addiction to pain killers? Seriously???

39. Carin says:

Andrew, your topics are almost as depressing as snippy’s rants.

Here’s a question: What’s everyone going to do on the 20th? Watch? Party? Drink?

40. Carin says:

Does it strike anybody else as absolutely silly: that number three on Parsnip’s list is Rush Limbaugh’s addiction to pain killers? Seriously???

FTFY

41. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

“Watch? Party? Drink?”

Yes.

Andrew, all the vast multitude of UN “Ambassadors” (seven-headed, horned, whore-beasts of the apocalypse) really need is one night in a prison cell with John Bolton’s mustache.

Well, that and more cowbell.

42. Andrew the Noisy says:

My school is putting aside class time to watch the Transfiguration of O! on Tuesday, so I’ll be drinking early, methinks.

The only plus side is going to be reading the yearly MLK Op-Eds and watching the elasticity expand as they stretch to talk about how even Though we’re Inaugurating a Black President Tommorrow, There’s Still So Much To Be Done.

After that, it’s go time. Barack Earl Delano Jefferson Kennedy’s reign will be long remembered, I have no doubt.

43. Andrew the Noisy says:

John Bolton’s Moustache swings, baby.

44. Rob Crawford says:

Actually, Nan, what strikes me is that alphie’s list only makes sense within the left’s fantasy world. Bush’s “cowardice”? The guy flew a freaking jet! He was training to take on Soviet bombers flying out of Cuba! If that’s cowardice then the word truly has no meaning!

I’m unaware of anyone who “defended” Limbaugh’s addiction. Perhaps defended his rights, defended his humanity (as in, the reality that he, like anyone, is imperfect), but not the actual addiction.

And, yeah, that’s a rather trivial item for a list that purports to show how “corrupt” an entire intellectual/philosophical movement has become.

I guess, if anything, alphie’s the prime example of what happens when you abandon intellectual honesty. He’s gleefully redefined words and made fictional claims, all so that the world he sees around him conforms to the little bubble of his self-proclaimed purity.

45. Cave Bear says:

I almost would agree with ginsocal, that tuberhead is working for his “Thor Memorial Brain-dead Moron Parody” award. But somehow, I don’t think so. I think this dickweed actually believes this crap.

Let’s see now…

George Bush’s cowardice

“Cowardice”? In what respect? I know this; anyone who could fly a F-102, and live to tell about it, has balls that have not been counted yet, certainly more than alpo has.

Illegal wars

Another leftwingnut wet dream. The war was perfectly legal, as it was signed off on by Congress AND the UN. Not only that, we WON the fucking war. The country is being turned back over to the Iraqis right now.

Rush Limbaugh’s drug addiction

What this has to do with anything, I can’t imagine. Limbaugh did not keep this a secret, nor was he by any stretch alone in having this problem.

Massive budget deficits

Read the Constitution, dickweed. Congress is the body that does the spending, not the President. And let’s not forget that your Commiecrat pals have been running the show in Congress for the past two years. Deal with it, Ass-boy.

torture

Still another leftie lie. Nobody was tortured, and I don’t give a damn what that stupid cunt said the other day. Making some muzzie terrorist pig-sucker wear panties on his head is not torture, nor was anything else listed such. Torture is severe beatings, electric shock to the genitals, broken bones, things of this nature, NONE of which was EVER done to the muzzies. Again, deal with it, bitch.

John McCain’s adultery

Huh? What adultery? Boy, you have been spiking your Kool-Aid again.

etc., etc. etc.

Blah, blah, blah (insert other assorted wingnut lies here).

Better luck next time, alphie.

“And now you have become so twisted you’re rabidly defending the open slaughter of children.”

Pray we never meet, monkeyspunk. You’ve got an ass beating coming for this one.

46. Rob Crawford says:

Here’s a question: What’s everyone going to do on the 20th? Watch? Party? Drink?

Go to work, put in a day at the office, head home and pass the evening, possibly talk to the Librarian, then head to sleep.

No different than any other Tuesday, and there’s no reason it should be.

47. Rob Crawford says:

Making some muzzie terrorist pig-sucker wear panties on his head is not torture

Depends on who wore them last, doesn’t it?

48. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

Things to do list: January, 20th

Hoard bottled water

Slap a liberal
Stock ammo
Slap a liberal
Dump my 401k & portfolio into a nice income annuity
And finally…slap a liberal

All to the tune of REM’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” looped on my IPOD.

49. Mossberg500 says:

Then all the welfare Israel receives from American and European taxpayers will get cut off?

Welfare? Okay, I’ve heard enough without responding.

parsnip, you bray on insinuating that the Israelis are some sort of parasitic drain on American taxpayers. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I worked for a private contractor, who supplied systems(I won’t elaborate which ones) for DOD satellites. Israel provided scientists, engineers and materials at no cost to our company, or the defense contractor. Our company was just one of thousands associated with the DOD. These satellites keep all of us safe, whether you approve or not.
Your understanding of the American/Israeli relationship is far too simplistic for your opinion to be credible, so give it a rest. The fact that our government can’t divulge how Israel earns the “aid” we give her, will soon be evident when PeBO continues our current policy.

50. Ric Locke says:

On January 20th I will go home and go to bed.

The Obama soundtrack ( to be released on the 20th) has :

The CD features a dozen stars including Stevie Wonder, who contributed a totally new track called “All About the Love Again.” The single, destined to be Wonder’s biggest hit in more than a decade, is a sizzling fresh slice of R&B, very updated and ready to embraced in remixes, etc.

The other artists on the album include Maroon 5 with their own new track, “Pure Imagination (2009),” plus will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, India.Arie, Melissa Etheridge, Usher, James Taylor, Jennifer Hudson, Death Cab for Cutie, Ozomatli, Robin Thicke, The Tony Rich Project, Wilco, Bebe Winans, rapper Common, Lionel Richie, and Melissa Etheridge.

“And now you have become so twisted you’re rabidly defending the open slaughter of children.”

No, you intestinal polyp, there is a difference between the deliberate targeting of woman and children, which is what the islamonazi barbarians do, and the accidental deaths caused by a civilized nation defending itself.

You are a morally stunted retard, alpo, and if you keep straining to produce antisemitic moral eqivelence like that, you’re gonna shit yourself.

Oh, oh, this is good.

68. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

“Still more dangerous than anything we’ve got in the air now, but not NEARLY as dangerous as it had been.”

Just out of curiosity, wha’d they do to make them safer? I remember being a little kid, and seeing those things “on a stick” at Sheppard Air Force Base. I thought they were just a stop gap between the F-86* and the F-4. I guess I can’t imagine anyone BUT ANG having to fly those things.

*I know the F-86 wasn’t an interceptor, but we hadn’t made that whole bomber/interceptor leap yet.

69. Slartibartfast says:

Here:

the lifetime Class A accident rate for the F-102 was 13.69 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours, and the rate was especially high during the early years of the plane’s service.

This poor safety record may have been due in part to a deadly flaw in the aircraft’s design that caused an engine stall and loss of control under a certain combination of angle of attack and airspeed frequently encountered during takeoff. According to a former F-102 pilot we’ve interviewed, this problem caused the plane to roll inverted and resulted in several fatal crashes. Numerous accidents were also encountered during landing because of the plane’s steep angle of attack and high airspeed that reduced the pilot’s visibility and reaction time. These factors have traditionally been two of the primary disadvantages of delta wing aircraft and explain why the pure delta wing design was later abandoned. Today’s delta wing aircraft are typically equipped with leading edge extensions or canards and fly-by-wire control systems that improve safety and performance. Luckily, F-102 operators overcame these deficiencies thanks to good pilot training and control lockouts that prevented the plane from reaching extreme conditions, and the F-102 went on to become one of the safer fighters of its day.

Regardless, the F-102 was still far more dangerous to fly than today’s combat aircraft. Compared to the F-102’s lifetime accident rate of 13.69, today’s planes generally average around 4 mishaps per 100,000 hours. For example, compare the F-16 at 4.14, the F-15 at 2.47, the F-117 at 4.07, the S-3 at 2.6, and the F-18 at 4.9. Even the Marine Corps’ AV-8B, regarded as the most dangerous aircraft in US service today, has a lifetime accident rate of only 11.44 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours. The F-102 claimed the lives of many pilots, including a number stationed at Ellington during Bush’s tenure. Of the 875 F-102A production models that entered service, 259 were lost in accidents that killed 70 Air Force and ANG pilots.

There’s more detailed information elsewhere, but life is short.

…which, upon reflection, means this whole comment was pretty useless. Sorry.

Those are some good fajitas though.

71. Ric Locke says:

Lamont: shorter to Slart’s comments —

Nothing was ever really done to the F-102 except development of procedures, and the control lockouts mentioned in the article. That wasn’t the philosophy in those days, especially at Lockheed. What Lockheed did instead was to develop the F-106, which is pretty much a lookalike at first glance but contains aerodynamic and engine-control improvements based on experience with the F-102 and is a much better airplane.

That was about the time the Air Force finally figured out that Johnson&Co. were going to keep screwing around making pretty stuff, and were anyway distracted by all the Top Secret work the Pentagon was handing them. It was also crystal clear that Convair (GD) was never going to make anything that wasn’t a big, heavy bomber in its bones, whatever its ostensible purpose. The Navy had figured the latter out long ago, and had the folks in St. Louis building the F-4, which was big, ugly, and overweight for what the AF wanted, but would do the job, and there was nothing else remotely close to the pipeline that would. The AF bought a bunch of them.

Funny bit, from my point of view: Every Phantom II ever made had the tailhook and reinforced landing gear needed for carrier operations. This made for a fairly continuous exchange of snark between Navy and AF aviators during Viet Nam.

Regards,
Ric

Sweet Fancy Moses!

So I guess the first thing the instructors taught were the friggin “ejection procedures.”

I get it though. I didn’t know you could retro-fit fly-by-wire in a jet that old.

PW: Learn something new everyday…and master those tough to spell curse words.

Is there anything this blog can’t do?

73. Cave Bear says:

It’s interesting to note that Convair’s B-58 had pretty much the same problem with high angles of attack and compressor stalls as the F-102. However, the Air Force stills loves it’s delta wings and their loads of lift. Both the F-15 and F/A-22 have “deltoid” wing planforms (even though both still have separate tail surfaces) and can carry respectable loads as a result.

In any case, you still had to be sharp to fly the ‘102. Even with the control lockouts and procedural changes made, it was still a very unforgiving airplane. That Bush was able to successfully fly it without mishap says a lot about his flying skills. And NOBODY who is “dumb” gets to fly a supersonic fighter, I don’t give a good goddam who your daddy is.

74. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

“What Lockheed did instead was to develop the F-106″…

Lemme guess…that was one of Kelly Johnson’s babies?

75. Mikey NTH says:

Well, they really didn’t retro fly-by-wire into those old birds. The Delta Dagger was one of the first production supersonic aircraft ever and was quickly replaced as more was learned about supersonic flight. But to get into one of those things and bring it back with you and it in one piece took not only some big brass ones, it also took some brains. There weren’t the computer controls so the pilot was taking in all of the info from the instrument panel, his vision, and the feel of the aircraft and then making some decisions that if done wrong would leave him a burning smear of grease on a hillside.

definitely not a task for the easily flustered and the slow thinker.

No. Both planes were designed and built by Consolidated Vultee (Convair), later General Dynamics. Lockheed did end up buying GD’s fighter division, but long after the ‘102 and ‘106 had come and gone.

The ones you’ve got to convince are the Israelis.

And it begins to look as if you’ve been once too often to that well, and are dumfounded when you come up dry.

The rule for the last sixty years has been: If the Jews survive, they’re guilty of war crimes. They have appealed to reason, and been rebuffed. They have appealed to Law, every jot and tittle of which is on their side, and been insulted. Only if they die can they be “good guys”.

It is possible, just possible, that they’d prefer to be alive to face the Court of World Opinion <spit> than dead. If that’s the case — and it’s looking more and more like it is — you may have many more opportunities to exercise your spittle-spewing outrage glands. Enjoy.

179. Patrick Carroll says:

I caught the BBC on the way home. A person from UNRWA was being interviewed about recent events in Gaza and, in particular, about Hamas firing from UN offices.

It was the usual: the vicious Jews are waging a genocidal war on all Palestinians, etc., etc. To hear the guy talk, you’d swear the UN had complete control of its buildings, that Palestinians are peace-loving types only interested in kite-flying and making daisy chains, and that the whole loving spoonful was being assaulted for no reason by bloodthirsty savages intent on dousing babies with Willy Pete.

Jeeeeezus! It was infuriating!

Of course, since the Beeb and the rest of the legacy media has turned Israel into a pariah nation that can never do any good, they’ve liberated the Israelis to do whatever they will. Ironic, that.

GONG!!!

189. Here you go JHo, read what the majority of Jewish Americans (who aren’t crazy right wing extremists) are saying

where do you get that they’re a majority?

J Street represents Americans, primarily but not exclusively Jewish, who support Israel and its desire for security as the Jewish homeland, as well as the right of the Palestinians to a sovereign state of their own – two states living side-by-side in peace and security. We believe ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is in the best interests of Israel, the United States, the Palestinians, and the region as a whole.

190. Civilis says:

The irony is, of course, that thanks to the unceasing efforts of idiots like Parsnip, more civilians will end up dead. Because Israel gets assigned the blame by the “international community” for the deaths of Palestinians used as human shields, Hamas has an incentive to use human shields. Because Hamas has an incentive to use human shields, they’ll keep doing so. Hamas has a goal of causing Israeli casualties, both military and civilian, and has an incentive to endanger Palestinian civilians, so they’ll keep fighting as long as they can.

Furthermore, since Parsnip and the “idiotnational community” castigate Israel for its attacks despite Israeli restraint, Israel has no real reason to show restraint. Would international reaction be any different if Israel was really trying to cause massive Palestinian casualties?

I don’t know whether to be happy or sad that one day one of these Islamic fundamentalist terrorist groups is going to take a step too far against a country that doesn’t give a shit about inflicting civilian casualties, such as Russia or China. Happy because it’ll be the last time that terrorist group does anything, sad because we’ll be able to see on the news what real civilian casualties are like. Heck, take a look at Chechnya after the Russians got through with it…

237. Civilis says:
”Anywho, how in blue-hell does this get “Twilight Zoned” into Israel (wanna-be peaceful democracy) bad, Hamas (blood-thirsty, Islamic death cult) good?”
It’s partially due to the fact that Hamas is weaker than Israel, at least in terms of conventional military force. That makes Hamas automatically the underdog in international opinion. That coupled with the PR power on the Palestinian side from Islamists flush with spending money and corresponding geopolitical influence and from Western fellow travelers.

It’s easy for those of us in the West to say “stop causing civilian casualties” and harder to actually do something about it. It’s especially tempting for us to want everyone to just stop shooting now, and thinking that that will bring peace. But we have to think about the long term, and what’s going to happen down the road, especially in this case where one side doesn’t want peace. We know what would cause Israel to stop attacking in Gaza: a sincere effort from the Palestinians to rein in the extremists shooting at Israel. We don’t know what would cause Hamas to stop shooting at Israel permanently, aside from the destruction of Israel. It’s obvious that whatever it takes to stop Hamas is going to involve heavy doses of “stick”, because in the past, Hamas has taken the “carrots” and then continued fighting.

Partially, it’s going to require recognition from the International Community and the Palestinians that Hamas is responsible for deaths from its use of human shields. Until that recognition, the only downside to Hamas from fighting comes from the deaths of its troops. As such, anyone that blames Israel primarily or exclusively for the deaths of Palestinians intentionally endangered by Hamas only encourages Hamas to endanger more civilians. If you’re a Hamas fighter, why wouldn’t you use a human shield? For Hamas, dead Hamas + dead Palestinian civilian is better than dead Hamas. As long as that equation is true, Hamas will continue to cause the deaths of innocent civilians. It’s also going to require holding Hamas responsible for breaching cease-fire agreements.

238. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

“Why did American Jews overwhelmingly support Obama and (yet again)the Democratic party?”

Jewish Guilt. They get it from their Mothers.

And they’ll roll with it right up until people start yelling, “Jews go back to the oven.”

Ya know, like those fucking demonstrators in Florida a week ago.

After that they have a tendency to kill the people that have launched 6,000 rockets at them over 2 years of “peace” and “truce.”

Oh, Looky! Hamas is hiding in a UN School. Behind children…that learn from the age of 4 to be ruthless Jew murderers because the cute, “Martyr Mascot Bee” tells them so.

Oh, silly me! They say they want death and martyrdom! They just want to kill Jews and the Jews are killing them back! That is the problem! If only those nasty Jews would get with the program and just die so that no one has to take those claims desiring death and martyrdom seriously!

If anyone truly cared about the Palestinians as actual real live people, the Palestinians would have been given cash compensation for lost property in 1948 and then resettled. Many people who lost property in the time 1939-1945 were compensated and resettled.

The Germans aren’t returning to East Prussia, the Finns aren’t returning to western Karelia. They were resettled.

I suppose no one really cares about the Palestinians except as poster children.

One thing the UN has well illustrated is that there is a fundamental problem in the definition of “nation state”. The entities that are recognized as such have vast differences.

Treating them as similar gives rise to problems that would not exist, except for the expectation, that because they have been defined as the same thing, that then they are the same thing and should be treated as the same, when it is obvious that they are not.

against a backdrop of Kassam rockets, “if someone was sending rockets into
my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I’m going to do everything
in my power to stop that, and I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.”

why do you keep attributing things to Obama that aren’t supported by his words and actions?

Who do you really think Obama’s going to cater to while in office…the 80% of Jewish Americans who vote (and donate to) Democratic candidates every.single.election, or the 20% of Jewish Americans who are crazy right wing extremists that vote Republican?

maggie – belief and facts have little to do with being a troll. I mean, if a troll actually did something that involved facts, then that commenter wouldn’t be a troll. Correct?

It is an existential thing; like when Alphie proposed the balloon missile fence or the container ship army. Both were attempts to engage reality and were so quickly laughed down – lord, were those funny! Good times, good times. Anyway, any attempt to engage actual facts, and place them amongst reality – political, military, social, whatever – is like a silver bullet to a werewolf.

Think a bit about the consequences of an action. Most adults can. A troll can’t. For example – a Hamas guy shoots at an Israeli soldier, the soldier shoots back. Then what? To a troll there is no what flowing on. Whereas a normal adult would say that the Israeli soldier reports in, heavier forces are brought to bear, the Hamas fighter is killed, etc. A troll can’t see the cascading chain of evens, and that from that may come an initiative to do more in that geographic area. Hence the fetish od proportionalism “What, the one guy shot, the other guy shot back – what’s all this shelling for?”

270. “once he’s elected to the Senate he’ll quit pandering…”

I don’t think those were attempts to engage reality. See his attempts to cite the Geneva Conventions. He’s got a caricature of what he thinks the Geneva Conventions are, a caricature of what he thinks military tactics are, a caricature of what a Republican is. He’s fighting his caricatures, not reality.

He could start with citing where Israel is violating the Geneva Conventions, by listing the applicable activity and convention. He could, but he won’t because we shot him down the last time he tried it. We’ve read the conventions, the real conventions, and we’ve cited them and we’ve cited historical precedents and he ignores that because they don’t fit his caricatures.

If me and my buddies park in a school and start blastin off mortar rounds, the school is fair game for .50 cal rounds and grenades thru windows.

You’d think Mr. Balloon Fence could spend a couple of seconds thinking about the logic of his assertions. If I recall right, some models of the Merkava have a fighting compartment for infantry at the rear. Replace that with a couple of stretcher racks, paint a red cross on the front and sides, designate it an ambulance and the IDF would be unstoppable! They could shoot up Gaza, and anyone that shot back would be a War Criminal! (No, that doesn’t really work in any logic but Parsnips…)

but no, the original question was (paraphrasing here)…. Why would Obama not agree with the roughly 80% of Jews that voted for him and go with Parsnip’s pet J Street people when he has voted for funding for Israel again and again and even said that he understands what they are doing in Gaza.

321. or are you arguing that a majority of that majority that voted for Obama doesn’t mind if Israel doesn’t defend itself?

322. happyfeet says:

Old Jews are Obama’s second most solid demographic. He’s not winning the younger ones by the same percentage, if he is at all (which, maybe not).

So let’s set aside Jeff’s diagnosis for a minute — not that it’s wrong, and not for the whole minute — and ask a couple obvious questions:

Knowing that it’s so — and they did — that old Jews didn’t need the young ones to give them the stern lefty setting-to that the Obamanites demanded that they give them, what was the real message for the young ones?

And at whom was all that superfluous “Go browbeat your racist Granny ____feld for the cause” business really directed?

And what was that message, for the such-a-Granny-less, really?

The answers are ugly.*
