“How much was your vote worth? Obama often outbid McCain”

Interesting stuff for those who find this kinda stuff, well, interesting. From Top of the Ticket:

Bet you didn’t know how much your vote cost to get.

Here’s the kind of stuff real politics fans revel in: Which candidate spent the most TV advertising money per vote recI’ll see you and raise you $2, presidential candidates Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain spent much differently to gain each vote, often Obama outbid McCaineived?

And where was that?

It may not surprise you that the winner spent the most to buy votes. Barack Obama spent $14.85 per vote received in Nevada.

The John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket spent $13.95 there.

Obama spent $7.23 per vote in Missouri, but still lost to McCain, who shelled out “only” $5.19. Obama spent $12.15 to win each vote in Virginia while the Republican spent $4.35.

How about Florida? McCain = $2.11. Obama = $8.86. New Mexico: Obama = $7.23. McCain = $9.25. Montana: Obama = $6.09. McCain = $0.

Ohio: Obama = $7.90. McCain = $5.80. Pennsylvania: Obama = $9.08. McCain = $8.51.

For some other states, the National Journal compiled the TV ad costs per vote here.

There is, of course, no necessary correlation between money spent and electoral outcome.

But it doesn’t hurt to spend more, particularly when the money is going toward efforts to get out the vote and, more importantly, the peddling of a particular framing of your campaign’s ideas by way of focus-group-tested pitches.

Bet McCain wishes his “signature legislation” weren’t so onerous. And of course, one is also left wondering where Russ Feingold was when the Obama campaign made a mockery of the entire effort to “reform” campaign finance — right down to oversees money and the deliberate decision to turn off online validation mechanisms.

  1. Dan Collins says:

Shit. I would have settled for a twelve-pack.

  2. happyfeet says:

I hate reading things what talk about McCain. He got more than enough talk already and he’s old and stupid and craven and irrelevant and an altogether worthless human being I think. Arizona needs to retire his tired pitiful ass I think. I will definitely support anyone who brings a primary challenge against McCain because McCain is disturbing and erratic and gay gay gay I think and bad for not just the Republican party but for politics generally.

  3. JHoward says:

The election was lost over the cost of Sarah Palin’s wardrobe. Well, in part. Sheesh.

  4. happyfeet says:

Meghan needs to have a talk with her dad and say dad you are old and stupid and you smell funny and you are embarrassing us. What part of loser do you not understand, daddy? You disgust people you try to appeal to. Ask mom you don’t believe me.

  5. cfbleachers says:

Will we be taxed on this?

Is there any slush money left over to buy my opinions after the election?

  6. happyfeet says:

I don’t know about buying your opinions but you can pick up a newspaper for cheap cheap cheap.

  7. happyfeet says:

oh. There was a link. The NYT is valued at $950M or so today is what it was.

  8. Lamontyoubigdummy says:

So not only am I a whore, I’m a cheap one?

    Big shock there.

I just petetioned Obama for half Dan’s twelve-pack.

    Spread the wealth dude.

  9. Sdferr says:

Or “How much would you charge to see a chance to put an end to American political, economic, industrial and military dominance in the world?”

For the children? Oh, that’s a freebee.

  10. geoffb says:

In Michigan we went for less than a sawbuck each. Cheap ho’s here.

At Satan’s restaurant that very thing is on the menu.

    It’s called the “Armageddon Special.”

It comes with a salad, a side of Four Horsemen, and an Anti-Christ baked potato (sour cream extra).

I’d suggest a nice cabernet sauvignon.

I dunno how much it costs.

    Bet it’s expensive though.

  12. Squid says:

What’s sad is that my vote may have got me a one-time revenue of $3.37, but it’s already turning into an ongoing expenditure of $25/month and climbing.

Say what you will about Obama, but the man knows how to get a good return on investment.

Did you at least get a free t-shirt, or one of those new Obama coins?

I got a new 16% annuity and a combat shotgun (but not at the same place, and I had to pay for them myself).

“Say what you will about Obama, but the man knows how to get a good return on investment.”

    So did Tony Soprano.

  14. SDN says:

Obviously not a good enough return!

Maybe thor can help a brother out.

    O!

  15. Chris says:

Oversees? Overseas? Both kind of fit, actually. I like.

  16. Bilwick1 says:

Obama outbid McCain in another and more crucial sense. Making the prediction attributed to Benjamin Franklin* come true, he simply promised more goodies to the sheeple. “Me-too” Republicans just can’t compete with Democrats when it comes to bribing the electorate. The Dems just have far more experience and a greater power-lust.

*Something like, “Republics last until the day when the electorate realizes they can vote themselves money from the Treasury.”

  17. Bob Reed says:

So much for the sordid influence of campaign contributions, eh?

I guess that buying their votes is what O! meant when he talked about voting in one’s economic self-interest

  18. Jim in KC says:

I’m holding out for at least $50 next time!

  19. meya says:

And all that work y’all put in volunteering for mccain. Who’s gonna calculate that, you poor forgotten ones.

  20. and what about those people that didn’t know they were volunteering for Obama?

  21. Obama got around 400k votes more than Bush got in 2004. When you compare how much Bush spent with how much Obama spent, Obama paid $927 for each one of those 400k additional votes. Of course this doesn’t mean anything at all, it’s just funny when you look at it that way.

  22. snuffles says:

Obama got 5,000,000+ more votes than Bush got in 2004, peter.

  23. donald says:

    Link please Snuffles. Link.

  24. EW says:

It’s really sad that it’s a possibly a matter of throwing money at people rather than principles that got the leftist illuminati elected this cycle.

  25. JD says:

So Baracky outspent McCain approximately $11,400,000 to $425K here in Indiana. Shocka that he won.

  26. JD says:

sniffles is still waiting on those votes to appear.

  27. […] THAT SCARY DONATIONS-THING? VOTE-BUYING! “How much was your vote worth? Obama often outbid McCain” …. […]
