I Crave a Boon [Dan Collins]

First, I’m fond of dicentra, so despite my crankiness, leave that alone, please. I guarantee we will work it out. Second, Jeff is trying to discover the proprietor of No More Mister Nice Blog, who wishes him a painful malignancy. Since he’s coming east, let’s see whether we can’t arrange a tete a tete, so they can work things out mano a mano. Any help appreciated.

dicentra is sort of cogent yet arresting sometimes like that cool noise scotch tape makes when you pull a whole bunch off at one time. I read her comments and stuff all the time. I used to click on her orangey more but she doesn’t post there a lot.

  2. dicentra says:

    Dan.

I hate your entrails and all that they contain.

Does that count as a peace offering.

Second, once you’ve traced someone’s account to the owner of the IP address, there’s not much you can do about finding the individual who is attached to it. You’d have to ask Random House who was using that IP address at that particular time of day, with the source address of Protein Wisdom.

Of course, they’ve got a whole block of Class B addys (65,535), but that doesn’t mean they don’t NAT. Which throws a wrench into the whole works.

And I’m pretty sure Random House wouldn’t tell about their traffic patterns without a subpoena.

She said, flaunting her IP fu

    Since he’s coming east, let’s see whether we can’t arrange a tete a tete…

I can’t help up east, you ever want to rattle some cages down southeast I got your back.

  5. Ouroboros says:

Geeeez.. You dont go tune someone up after you announce to the whole on your blog that your going to their town to hunt them down… You Opsec is blown from the git-go.. Man, if this guy so much as slips on a banana peel cops ‘ll decend on you like stink on shit. Dont they teach you youngsters anything in ADL-Mossad-Krav Maga-Operative School anymore?

  6. Ouroboros says:

::sigh:: someday I’ll learn to proof-read…

  7. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

The person who’s been using that IP address lately is a woman, I’m about 75% sure.

I don’t want to say much more than that. However, there’s a fair chance that Dan might run into her at an alumni dinner.

Perhaps that person might want to apologize before this goes any further.

  8. Jeff G. says:

    SBP–

    Say more, please.

    Ouroboros —

Let the cops descend on me. Unless I did it, I’ll have an alibi. And if I did do it, I won’t want one. Wishing death on a guy with a wife and young son? That deserves to be addressed.

Besides, I don’t want to kill anyone. I’m a part-time sociologist. I just want to see if these people have the balls to offer the same kind of wishes to me in person.

  9. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Jeff, I’m not really comfortable saying more right now. That IP address has been used by several people at Random House. The most recent person I found may not be the person who has it now.

  10. Topsecretk9 says:

Ack, I kinda hate thee — Is the premise for this post deep in the vasty of the last post?

  11. Topsecretk9 says:

I looked in the vasty deep and I get it now.

  12. Ouroboros says:

I was actually just having a bit of fun with the topic.. Didn’t actually think you’re going hunting..

Sociology and psychology… or rather the question of why people do the stupid shit things they do.. fascinates me as well.. but is there really a question in your mind as to whether these rabid hate spewing Internet ‘mouths’ that constantly talk the talk, really walk the walk? I’ll save you airfare… The answer is NO! If they did they’d get no satisfaction by talkin potty in a comment thread and running away to hide.. I’ve rarely even seen any that will stick around to follow-up their vile comment with a second one.. Only some twisted, maladjusted D&D Geek could confuse online acting out with real world toughness…

  13. Topsecretk9 says:

Hey, this is kinda fun…see how many wiki edits the IP has done here

  14. that is fun TSk9. they seem to know a lot about Judy Garland. NTTAWWT.

  15. Topsecretk9 says:

    Maggie

    Heh.

  16. dicentra says:

The most recent person I found may not be the person who has it now.

They might have set it up so there’s a pool of IP addys (NAT), and you get one of the addys when you initiate a connection to the Internet. Either that or they don’t, see, and it’s actually the same person all the time.

Someone who’s passionate about Broadway, looks to be.

  17. Topsecretk9 says:

    and Alan Dershowitz too.

  18. Topsecretk9 says:

Well, I’ve seen a few references to Random House in the wiki edits, FYI.

  19. SarahW says:

Well, all I’ve got so far is he’s between 48 and 49 years old, and a lapsed Catholic.

    Also I have a tootheache.

  20. SarahW says:

Which makes you put e’s in stuff, you know.

So far none of the company brochures has a picture of him. He posted on a memorial guestbook of a Random House person who passed suddenly. Said the memorialized guy had “just saved a book for him” and that SteveM had been about to approach him about another similar job.

  21. SarahW says:

    eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  22. Topsecretk9 says:

the couple “Talk:Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades” wiki entries are kinda interesting, but a lot of references to Randon, Knoff and W.W.Norton and Company.

  23. Jeff G. says:

Thing is, I have a friend (since summer camp, 197x) who is an author at Random House.

I’ll call him tomorrow. And scratch RH off my list of places to publish.

  24. Ouroboros says:

Interesting that this Steve M. has been recently cited by Glenn Greenwald @ salon.com.. Not by his blog name (nomoremisterniceblog) but by name.. hmmm.. Probably just coincidence.

  25. Jeff G. says:

Anyway, it’s amazing what Norbit and a bottle of scotch can do to soften your mood.

Still, I need to beat somebody ass. Just, you know, not tonight.

  26. psycho... says:

    I question this thread’s patriotism.

Uncoupling the citizen’s desire to see his enemies hurt from his willingness to hurt them himself is the very soul of representative democracy. The voting-booth-sized gap between a man’s death wishes and his cowardice is the only place the Republic can live. Without it, there might be no politics at all.

Who’s gonna steal all those Chicago gangbangers’ dogs’ nuts? You? Right. Like you’d stroll into the ‘hood and saw off nut one. But put enough anonymous threats in a ballot box, and pretty soon you got yourself a city dumptruck full of dog balls to gloat over. Can you smell it? That’s the smell of freedom.

This No More Mister Nice Blog character knows what America’s all about. Y’all sound like a buncha anarchists.

  27. Topsecretk9 says:

psycho has a point. Still, once I get my Emma Goldman on, there’s just no closing the tenement doors. Because the rat done fled already.

    Here come the judge!

  31. The Lost Dog says:

    Dan,

Let me know if you have access to my e-mail.

If the “Man” is actually coming East, I would drag my …uummmmm…Rocky Mountain Oysters through a hundred yards of broken glass to kiss the butt of whoever he is coming to see.

I also have some other things I would like to discuss with you, but don’t really want to post for all to see.

But I also am reluctant to put my e-mail up here, for obvious reasons. I would think that you would have access to it (s’okay, Jeff), but if not, let me know.

I am really not as angry as I sound if I stay away from my AXW for a couple of days! Too bad she’s got my son. I am like a bee to a flower when it comes to him….

And I really would feel privileged to meet both you and Jeff, and “will travel” (Vermont ain’t thet far). And, on top of that, it might give me a reason to keep some of the money I make for myself. A very rare occurrence, but one that I feel like the time has come for…

    Thanks, Dan.

  32. The Lost Dog says:

    Jeff,

When your done, get in touch and I will take you to the Cutting Room for $10 shots and a large dose of insufferable New Yorkers.

And, as soon as one of the five people who owe me money pays me, I’ll send you some money towards your airfare. I would love to witness your “meeting”! I have a feeling that whoever this is already has wet pants.

On a different tack, the trouble with working for yourself is that every faux,/i> rich person thinks that you can wait forever to get paid. And it is also amazing how many people around here have two Mercede’s’ in the driveway, a two million dollar house, and have eight pieces of crappy furniture in the whole freakin’ place. And they say “I can only pay you for eight hours” when they want you to work for them…

What a cool place Fairfield County is…

  33. The Lost Dog says:

    HTML skills.

    Still workong on it…

  34. The Lost Dog says:

    “Workong”?

    Even better than my HTML…

But, just maybe I was talking about a giant ape.

  35. Rusty says:

It’ll turn out to be some stunted dweeb or a guy with tatoos who beats up girls, or a woman with tatoos who also only beats up girls. The kind of person who, when confronted, fold like a Trader Joes shopping bag.
Trust me on this. I still have my original nose.

  36. Chris Chittleborough says:

Here’s a basically useful piece of information: that IP was once assigned the internet Domain Name “calvin-o.randomhouse.com”. In practice, very few network administrators keep the “Reverse DNS” data up to date, so that name is probably years out of date.

  37. Chris Chittleborough says:

Ah, fudge! That piece of information is not “basically useful“, but “basically useless“.

  38. B Moe says:

Who’s gonna steal all those Chicago gangbangers’ dogs’ nuts? You? Right. Like you’d stroll into the ‘hood and saw off nut one. I can’t read this without hearing Jim Nabors singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic in the background. I salute you sir.

Now wait just a minute there, mister!

  40. BJTex says:

stevem is claiming at his blog that he had nothing to do with the comment in question.

  41. banned in colorado says:

Dan, you have to admit the Unitarians did good in preventing more bloodshed. Why you continue to protect the hatespewing from the Right I don’t know. Some in your place of work might take umbrage in the illiberal rhetoric that flourishes her.

JeffG is just plain ridiculous in his vengefulness for mild insults (relative to what “liberals” get everyday on Fox and Rush). He needs to Get Over Himself. I believe Steve M was ‘banned’ also like me. So where’s the ban on speech there?

  42. banned in colorado says:

    deal with the Unitarians here

  43. Education Guy says:

Shut up dave. No one gives a crap what you think anymore.

  44. banned in colorado says:

    “here”, aw.

anyway, how’d you feel if Umbrage was taken by those who disagree by attacking you at your place of work? Can’t we keep this in the rhetorical plane of bits and bites? Searching out physically every umbrage is seems to be PW’s forte.

  45. Pablo says:

Writing be not your forte and thinking ain’t also. Do STFU, dave.

  46. Rob Crawford says:

JeffG is just plain ridiculous in his vengefulness for mild insults (relative to what “liberals” get everyday on Fox and Rush).

Actually, no, asshat. You haven’t been paying attention: Jeff only gets concerned when the “insults” turn to threats, particularly against his family.

And, really, the left (in general, and dave in particular) needs to get over its persecution complex/fantasies. I doubt you can really point to any comments on either Rush or Fox that come to the level of threatening, wishing someone would have a painful death, or the like.

  47. JD says:

Who, exactly, is protecting hatespewing from the Right around here, dataless? Be specific. Provide examples.

  48. Dan Collins says:

    dave,
I’m sorry, but I don’t know what hatespewing you’re talking about. Can you be specific? BTW, I admire the courage of that guy, and I think that in relation to this episode I’ve said nothing at all critical of the Unitarian Universalists. I’ve saved most of my complaints for the C of E in general, in large part because of its much closer ties to the Roman Catholic Church, of which I’m a member.

  49. Mikey NTH says:

    “Provide examples.”

Real examples, not ones you just make up.

  50. Ouroboros says:

“Now wait just a minute there, mister!”

    Hahahahaha!

You don’t play Dungeons and Dragons for as long as I have without learning a little something about courage.

  51. Great Banana says:

JeffG is just plain ridiculous in his vengefulness for mild insults (relative to what “liberals” get everyday on Fox and Rush).

Really, please cite me where Fox or Rush wished death on any liberal, or that liberal’s child? Simply b/c you and your friends repeat this ad nauseum to each other does not make it true. If there was one thing I could wish upon you leftists, it would be that you came to realize that simply repeating the same thing to each other over and over does not make it true. Once you got past that and started looking for actual empirical facts, you would come around to conservatism in no time. the hurdle is your inability to distance yourself from your echo chamber beliefs.

At least once in a blue moon, try to deal in facts. If you ever used facts as the starting point for anything you said, you would receive some respect. Because you deal completely in what you “feel” and what you “believe”, devoid of facts, you are simply akin to a 3 year old crying. Why do you continue to do this?

Moreover, I would put up the “hatespewing” from teh right against the “hatespewing” from the left – at sites such as KOS, Firedoglake, DU, etc., any day of the week to see who is much more vile and personal in their attacks. I wish neither side would do it, but the left has this category pretty well sewn up by being more vile by an order of magnitude of about 10.

  52. actor212 says:

Moreover, I would put up the “hatespewing” from teh right against the “hatespewing” from the left – at sites such as KOS, Firedoglake, DU, etc., any day of the week to see who is much more vile and personal in their attacks.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeea, that’s why Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan were getting death threats by people from FDLake and Kos…

    LOL!

U idjit. Grow a set, son, and become a liberal.

  53. Tom Hilton says:

Really, please cite me where Fox or Rush wished death on any liberal, or that liberal’s child?

What country have you been living in? Because where I live, Rush Limbaugh has ‘joked’ about killing all the liberals (except a few, to be kept in camps as specimens); Coulter has ‘joked’ about wishing Timothy McVeigh had bombed the New York Times; Michael Reagan has talked about gunning down truthers; Melanie Morgan has repeatedly ‘joked’ about murdering Bill Keller; and so on.

  54. The Lost Dog says:

    Tom hilton,

And what does that have to do with PW?

Rush and Coulter are obviously joking (unless you are a neanderthal), and I’ve never even heard of that other guy.

There definitely are some right wingers who actually are wingnuts, but I’ve never seen one here at PW. And go spend an hour at Kos, and come back and tell us that it is not overflowing with hate.

I mean, wonder of wonders! I’ve never even seen anyone here who hates gays or blacks!

    OOPS! Yhere goes your meme!

  55. Rusty says:

    #53
Speaking of stunted dweebs….He said “cite”. ya got a quote or ya just talkin out yer ass?

  56. Dan Collins says:

Gee, did Marcotte or McEwen get death threats from anyone who posts here? What’s your point, actor?

  57. happyfeet says:

I came back just to read #26 again. I was gonna message it to a friend in Chicago but it’s 5:01 there so he would be gone I’m pretty sure.

  58. B Moe says:

When did Marcotte and McEwen get death threats?

  59. Dan Collins says:

They got them, B Moe, after the nasty things said about Catholics caught up to her when she started working for Edwards.

  60. B Moe says:

Well that had to be conservatives, yeah. There are hardly any liberal Democrat Catholics.

  61. banned in colorado says:

Dan. Not being an English major, intentionalism is a concept not clear to me. I’ll take it literally. The author’s intent is all important in what he or she writes: Like the author of the firedog’s example of a poster: photo of typical right-wing prop. Sure, there is a little joke there but the ominous nature is present. Like a KKKlan’s cross. I was responding to your seemingly willful avoidance of the liberal killer’s intent. The police have already said his intent was to kill liberals (and gays). Unfortunately it is not a rare conceit, his intent. It’s everywhere, like the behemoth truck that was offended by my sister’s Darwin fish stick-on at the back of her SubiForester. He being the good Christian was inflamed with rage and stalked her relatively tiny suv with his uge truck inches away from her tailgate in rage at her using the ‘fish’ symbol in a irreligoius fashion. At 80 mph that gets a little dangerous. (Jeff has relatively little to worry about by internet flamers.) Happens all the time (in Utah btw.). Maybe another reason I left the place as the 70 percent Republican voting pattern matches the discrimation shown ‘gentiles’ which in Utah could be even jewish ‘gentiles’. Although mostly the discrimination only affects private enterprise (oh, that’s a lot of money..)

The Take Back Vermont” movement had it’s hate filled moments if you’d followed the gay rights controversy here in our state. That year the Republican party won the largest state house advancement of R. members of any state house in the nation due to exploiting the homophobia. That was back in Howard Dean’s last term in office. (year? about 7 to 9 years ago..as example,). The centrist Democrat Dean as governor reluctantly at first endorsed the civil union’s proposal but when confronted by the hate mob wishing violence upon gays, Dean saw the light that Right wing Republicanism was stoking the violent rhetoric and the nativistic “take back Vermont” movement connected to the homophobic movement in outrage at those damned ‘liberals’. On the way to New Hampshire last weekend some of those huge ‘Take Back Vermont’ signs are still up (in violation of state laws against billboards but the authorities aren’t going to push their luck with such hardcore haters…generally old farts smoking themselves into an early grave anyway…from my personal experiences with a few of them hard core ol’ fart wingers..) Just one of many examples of hatespewing from the “Right” out there. ‘course I go back to the days when nuns were killed in El Salvador for their endorsing worker’s rights etc there. And remember the open encouragement of those killers by American wingers at Dartmouth Review.

great banana and dogs.. .Rush isn’t kidding. Read his bio (the last NYTimes mag. report was excellent in reiterating it) about his dad who I believe is a descendent of ol’ Confederates in Missouri. The kind that made Kansas Bloody back in the day. His dad fed him all the old john birch shit from way back. Rush has humor, but his intent is boiler plate fascistic, antiliberalism, fed to him by his big shot lawyer dad (also a behemoth-sized big jerk in a small town). Babbitry. Rush hates to learn anything new so he just followed his dad’s ideology.

Fox News was set up from the beginning to negate all and anything “liberal”. Roger Ailes? heard of him?

“Right makes Might” vs. “Might makes Right”.
